Abstract:Paleo-climate proxy records documenting sea-ice extent are important sources of information to assess the time of emergence and magnitude of on-going changes in the Arctic Ocean and better predict future climate and environmental evolution in that region. In this study, a suite of geochemical tracers including total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N), stable isotope composition of organic carbon and nitrogen (δ 13C, δ 15N), and phytoplankton biomarkers (highly branched isoprenoids (HBIs) and sterols) were measured in a marine sediment core to document the sea-ice variability in the Chukchi Sea since the beginning of the Industrial Era. The downcore profile of the sea-ice proxy HBIs suggests a transition from extensive sea ice in the late 19th century to Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) in AD 1930–1990s and then moderate sea-ice cover since 1990s. Rising of all HBI abundances between AD 1865–1875 indicate a transient retreat of summer ice edge off the shelf followed by a return to near-perennial sea ice till 1920–1930 as revealed by the absence of HBIs and brassicasterol. Sea ice retreat occurred again in AD 1920–1930 and followed by colder decades in 1940s–1960s before a sustained decline since the 1990s. The downcore profile of C/N, δ 13C of organic matter and sterols indicates a gradual increase of terrigenous inputs accelerating during the most recent decades likely due to enhanced fluvial run-off and sediment transport by sediment-laden sea ice. Concomitantly, increasing δ 15N values suggest limited nutrient utilization due to enhanced stratification of the surface ocean caused by increased freshening. The role of the Arctic oscillation (AO), the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) are discussed to explore potential drivers of the observed sea-ice changes.

Abstract:Integrating ice‐sheet models with empirical data pertaining to palaeo‐ice sheets promotes advances in the models used in sea‐level predictions and can improve our understanding of past ice‐sheet behaviour. The large number of empirical constraints on the last British–Irish Ice Sheet make it ideal for model–data comparison experiments. Here, we present an ensemble of 600 model simulations, which are compared with data on former ice‐flow extent, flow geometry and deglaciation timing. Simulations which poorly recreate data were ruled out, allowing us to examine the remaining physically realistic simulations which capture the ice sheets' behavioural tendencies. Our results led to a novel reconstruction of behaviour in the data‐poor region of the North Sea, insights into the ice stream, potential ice‐shelf and readvance dynamics, and the potential locations of peripheral ice caps. We also propose that the asynchronous behaviour of the British–Irish Ice Sheet is a consequence of the geography of the British Isles and the merging and splitting of different bodies of ice through saddle merger and collapse. Furthermore, persistent model–data mismatches highlight the need for model development, especially regarding the physics of ice–ocean interactions. Thus, this work highlights the power of integrating models and data, a long‐held aim of palaeoglaciology.

Submesoscale Variability and Basal Melting in Ice Shelf Cavities of the Amundsen Sea

Abstract:Melting of ice shelves can energize a wide range of ocean currents, from three‐dimensional turbulence to relatively large‐scale boundary currents. Here, we conduct high‐resolution simulations of the western Amundsen Sea to show that submesoscale eddies are prevalent inside ice shelf cavities. The simulations indicate energetic submesoscale eddies at the top and bottom ocean boundary layers, regions with sharp topographic slopes and strong lateral buoyancy gradients. These eddies play a substantial role in the vertical and lateral (along‐isopycnal) heat advection toward the ice shelf base, enhancing the basal melting in all simulated cavities. In turn, the meltwater provides strong buoyancy gradients that energize the submesoscale variability, forming a positive loop that could affect the overall efficiency of heat exchange between the ocean and the ice shelf cavity. Our study implies that submesoscale‐induced enhancement of basal melting may be a ubiquitous process that needs to be parameterized in coarse‐resolution climate models.

Variability Scaling and Consistency in Airborne and Satellite Altimetry Measurements of Arctic Sea Ice

Abstract:Satellite and airborne remote sensing provide complementary capabilities for the observation of the sea ice cover. However, due to the differences in footprint sizes and noise levels of the measurement techniques, as well as sea ice's variability across scales, it is challenging to carry out inter-comparison or consistently study these observations. In this study we focus on the remote sensing of sea ice thickness parameters and carry out the following: (1) the analysis of variability and its statistical scaling for typical parameters and (2) the consistency study between airborne and satellite measurements. By using collocating data between Operation IceBridge and CryoSat-2 (CS-2) in the Arctic, we show that consistency exists between the variability in radar freeboard estimations, although CryoSat-2 has higher noise levels. Specifically, we notice that the noise levels vary among different CryoSat-2 products, and for the European Space Agency (ESA) CryoSat-2 freeboard product the noise levels are at about 14 and 20 cm for first-year ice (FYI) and multi-year ice (MYI), respectively. On the other hand, for Operation IceBridge and NASA's Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), it is shown that the variability in snow (or total) freeboard is quantitatively comparable despite more than a 5-year time difference between the two datasets. Furthermore, by using Operation IceBridge data, we also find widespread negative covariance between ice freeboard and snow depth, which only manifests on small spatial scales (40 m for first-year ice and about 80 to 120 m for multi-year ice). This statistical relationship highlights that the snow cover reduces the overall topography of the ice cover. Besides this, there is prevalent positive covariability between snow depth and snow freeboard across a wide range of spatial scales. The variability and consistency analysis calls for more process-oriented observations and modeling activities to elucidate key processes governing snow–ice interaction and sea ice variability on various spatial scales. The statistical results can also be utilized in improving both radar and laser altimetry as well as the validation of sea ice and snow prognostic models.
Understanding Decadal-Scale Dynamics in the Bering Sea: Investigating Trends and Variability in Sea Ice, Winds, and Waves

Abstract:Despite the societal and economic importance of the Bering Sea, recent rapid changes in surface ocean conditions are not well documented. We address this gap by characterizing the Bering Sea winter ice–wind–wave climate using satellite observations and reanalysis data. Nine of the last 10 years (2014–23) have experienced anomalously low sea ice extent relative to the 1980–2023 mean. Between 2003 and 2023, gale force wind speeds have become more common and satellite altimeter observations show significant wave height (SWH) has increased ≥6 m, and has increased by 1 m between 2003 and 2023, while 20 days yr−1 exhibit SWH > 9 m. Winters between 2018 and 2023 were the six stormiest since 2003, and the sea ice season decreases by 1–4 days yr−1. Should ice loss in the Bering Sea continue to decline, we hypothesize that the frequency of extreme waves over the Bering Sea shelf would increase, severely impacting coastal communities. In September 2022, extratropical cyclone Merbok caused unprecedented SWH (>15 m) over the shelf which were uncharacteristic for the season, and caused widespread coastal inundation and property damage. Such anomalous wave conditions exemplify the emerging threat storms pose in a future where sea ice is absent more frequently in winter, when severe storms are most common. Satellite altimeters have improved the observation of surface ocean conditions in the Bering Sea during the most intense storms, and we demonstrate that a suite of five or more altimeters is required to capture regional events adequately. Significance Statement Although the Bering Sea region has recently endured rapid sea ice loss and the decline of several species important for subsistence and commercial fishing, it has relatively few resources to monitor and mitigate changing climatic conditions. In this article, we show that extreme wind and wave conditions in the Bering Sea have strongly increased in recent years, as sea ice has declined. This points to a need for reliable and continued monitoring, and with only two wave buoys providing year-round observations, an adequate constellation of ocean remote sensing instruments is required to capture extreme ocean–ice–atmosphere events in an isolated and challenging environment.

Sources of heterogeneous variability and trends in Antarctic sea-ice

Abstract:While the Northern Hemisphere sea-ice has uniformly declined over the past several decades, the observed sea-ice in the Southern Hemisphere has exhibited regions of increase and decrease. Here we use a comprehensive set of ocean-sea-ice simulations (1990-2007) to elucidate the drivers of the observed heterogeneous sea-ice trends. We show wind variability is an important determinant of the heterogeneous pattern of the variability and trends in Southern Hemisphere sea-ice. Only in the West Pacific region does Southern Annular Mode wind forcing contribute significantly to the trend in sea-ice duration. El Niño Southern Oscillation wind forcing contribution to the sea-ice duration trend is confined to the Atlantic and Pacific. In the Indian Ocean, weather is a significant driver of the sea-ice duration trend. Only in the East Pacific region is wind forcing alone insufficient to give rise to the observed sea-ice decline and must be augmented by warming to reproduce the observations.
Quantifying the Effect of Ocean Bed Properties on Ice Sheet Geometry over 40,000 Years with a Full-Stokes Model

Abstract:Simulations of ice sheet evolution over glacial cycles require integration of observational constraints using ensemble studies with fast ice sheet models. These include physical parameterisations with uncertainties, for example, relating to grounding-line migration. More complete ice dynamic models are slow and have thus far only be applied for < 1000 years, leaving many model parameters unconstrained. Here we apply a 3D thermomechanically coupled full-Stokes ice sheet model to the Ekström Ice Shelf embayment, East Antarctica, over a full glacial cycle (40 000 years). We test the model response to differing ocean bed properties that provide an envelope of potential ocean substrates seawards of today's grounding line. The end-member scenarios include a hard, high-friction ocean bed and a soft, low-friction ocean bed. We find that predicted ice volumes differ by > 50 % under almost equal forcing. Grounding-line positions differ by up to 49 km, show significant hysteresis, and migrate non-steadily in both scenarios with long quiescent phases disrupted by leaps of rapid migration. The simulations quantify the evolution of two different ice sheet geometries (namely thick and slow vs. thin and fast), triggered by the variable grounding-line migration over the differing ocean beds. Our study extends the timescales of 3D full-Stokes by an order of magnitude compared to previous studies with the help of parallelisation. The extended time frame for full-Stokes models is a first step towards better understanding other processes such as erosion and sediment redistribution in the ice shelf cavity impacting the entire catchment geometry.
Dynamic Antarctic ice sheet during the early to mid-Miocene

Abstract:Geological data indicate that there were major variations in Antarctic ice sheet volume and extent during the early to mid-Miocene. Simulating such large-scale changes is problematic because of a strong hysteresis effect, which results in stability once the ice sheets have reached continental size. A relatively narrow range of atmospheric CO2 concentrations indicated by proxy records exacerbates this problem. Here, we are able to simulate large-scale variability of the early to mid-Miocene Antarctic ice sheet because of three developments in our modeling approach. (i) We use a climate-ice sheet coupling method utilizing a high-resolution atmospheric component to account for ice sheet-climate feedbacks. (ii) The ice sheet model includes recently proposed mechanisms for retreat into deep subglacial basins caused by ice-cliff failure and ice-shelf hydrofracture. (iii) We account for changes in the oxygen isotopic composition of the ice sheet by using isotope-enabled climate and ice sheet models. We compare our modeling results with ice-proximal records emerging from a sedimentological drill core from the Ross Sea (Andrill-2A) that is presented in a companion article. The variability in Antarctic ice volume that we simulate is equivalent to a seawater oxygen isotope signal of 0.52-0.66‰, or a sea level equivalent change of 30-36 m, for a range of atmospheric CO2 between 280 and 500 ppm and a changing astronomical configuration. This result represents a substantial advance in resolving the long-standing model data conflict of Miocene Antarctic ice sheet and sea level variability.
A New Eulerian Iceberg Module for Climate Studies

Abstract:Abstract Icebergs modulate the effective location of freshwater input from ice sheets into the ocean and therefore play an important role for the climate, especially during times of increased ice discharge (e.g., Heinrich events). None of the models participating in the Paleo Modeling Intercomparison Project simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum or the last deglaciation included icebergs. Here, we present a newly developed dynamic/thermodynamic iceberg module that was specifically designed to be incorporated in climate models used for long‐term climate simulations with interactive ice sheets. In contrast to the widely used Lagrangian iceberg models, it is formulated in an Eulerian framework. This simplifies coupling to ocean models and enhances computational efficiency for glacial climates. In a set of sensitivity experiments, where the module was implemented into an Earth System Model, we validate the model for present‐day climate conditions and test its sensitivity to key parameters. Further, we investigate the effect of iceberg hosing on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) as compared to traditional freshwater hosing. Varying the hosing rate slowly in time yields a good approximation of the hysteresis curve of the AMOC. We find that the sensitivity of the AMOC to iceberg hosing is stronger than to freshwater hosing in the same ocean point, but weaker as compared to a latitude belt forcing in the North Atlantic. This emphasizes the 2e necessity to include interactive icebergs in long‐term coupled climate simulations to realistically represent melt patterns and the response of the AMOC to freshwater input from melting ice sheets.

Physical links from atmospheric circulation patterns to Barents-Kara sea ice variability from synoptic to seasonal timescales in the cold season

Abstract:Previous findings show that large-scale atmospheric circulation plays an important role in driving Arctic sea ice variability from synoptic to seasonal timescales. While some circulation patterns responsible for Barents-Kara sea ice changes have been identified in previous works, the most important patterns and the role of their persistence remain unclear. Our study uses Self-Organizing Maps to identify nine high-latitude circulation patterns responsible for day-to-day Barents-Kara sea ice changes. Circulation patterns with a high-pressure centre over the Urals (Scandinavia) and a low-pressure centre over Iceland (Greenland) are found to be the most important for Barents-Kara sea ice loss. Their opposite-phase counterparts are found to be the most important for sea ice growth. The persistence of these circulation patterns helps explain sea ice variability from synoptic to seasonal timescales. We further use sea ice models forced by observed atmospheric fields (including the surface circulation and temperature) to reproduce observed sea ice variability and diagnose the role of atmosphere-driven thermodynamic and dynamic processes. Results show that thermodynamic and dynamic processes similarly contribute to Barents-Kara sea ice concentration changes on synoptic timescales via circulation. On seasonal timescales thermodynamic processes seem to play a stronger role than dynamic processes. Overall our study highlights the importance of large-scale atmospheric circulation, its persistence and varying physical processes in shaping sea ice variability across multiple timescales, which has implications for seasonal sea ice prediction.

Energetics and Transfer of Submesoscale Brine Driven Eddies at a Sea Ice Edge

Abstract:During polar winter, refreezing of exposed ocean areas results in the rejection of brine, i.e., salt-enriched plumes of water, a source of available potential energy that can drive ocean instabilities. As this process is highly localized, and driven by sea ice physics, not gradients in oceanic or atmospheric buoyancy, it is not currently captured in modern climate models. This study aims to understand the energetics and lateral transfer of density at a semi-infinite, instantaneously-opened and continuously re-freezing sea ice edge through a series of high resolution model experiments. We show that kilometer-scale submesoscale eddies grow from baroclinic instabilities via an inverse energy cascade. These eddies meander along the ice edge and propagate laterally. The lateral transfer of buoyancy by eddies is not explained by existing theories. We isolate the fundamental forcing-independent quantities driving lateral mixing, and discuss the implications for the overall strength of submesoscale activity in the Arctic Ocean.

Sources of low-frequency variability in observed Antarctic sea ice

Abstract:Antarctic sea ice has exhibited significant variability over the satellite record, including a period of prolonged and gradual expansion, as well as a period of sudden decline. A number of mechanisms have been proposed to explain this variability, but how each mechanism manifests spatially and temporally remains poorly understood. Here, we use a statistical method called low-frequency component analysis to analyze the spatiotemporal structure of observed Antarctic sea ice concentration variability. The identified patterns reveal distinct modes of low-frequency sea ice variability. The leading mode, which accounts for the large-scale, gradual expansion of sea ice, is associated with the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation and resembles the observed sea surface temperature trend pattern that climate models have trouble reproducing. The second mode is associated with the central Pacific El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Southern Annular Mode and accounts for most of the sea ice variability in the Ross Sea. The third mode is associated with the eastern Pacific ENSO and Amundsen Sea Low and accounts for most of the pan-Antarctic sea ice variability and almost all of the sea ice variability in the Weddell Sea. The third mode is also related to periods of abrupt Antarctic sea ice decline that are associated with a weakening of the circumpolar westerlies, which favors surface warming through a shoaling of the ocean mixed layer and decreased northward Ekman heat transport. Broadly, these results suggest that climate model biases in long-term Antarctic sea ice and large-scale sea surface temperature trends are related to each other and that eastern Pacific ENSO variability is a key ingredient for abrupt Antarctic sea ice changes.

Abstract:In this study, we present unique data collected with a Surface and Under-Ice Trawl (SUIT) during five campaigns between 2012 and 2017, covering the spring to summer and autumn transition in the Arctic Ocean, and the seasons of winter and summer in the Southern Ocean. The SUIT was equipped with a sensor array from which we retrieved: sea-ice thickness, the light field at the underside of sea ice, chlorophyll a concentration in the ice (in-ice chl a), and the salinity, temperature, and chl a concentration of the under-ice water. With an average trawl distance of about 2 km, and a global transect length of more than 117 km in both polar regions, the present work represents the first multi-seasonal habitat characterization based on kilometer-scale profiles. The present data highlight regional and seasonal patterns in sea-ice properties in the Polar Ocean. Light transmittance through Arctic sea ice reached almost 100% in summer, when the ice was thinner and melt ponds spread over the ice surface. However, the daily integrated amount of light under sea ice was maximum in spring. Compared to the Arctic, Antarctic sea-ice was thinner, snow depth was thicker, and sea-ice properties were more uniform between seasons. Light transmittance was low in winter with maximum transmittance of 73%. Despite thicker snow depth, the overall under-ice light was considerably higher during Antarctic summer than during Arctic summer. Spatial autocorrelation analysis shows that Arctic sea ice was characterized by larger floes compared to the Antarctic. In both Polar regions, the patch size of the transmittance followed the spatial variability of sea-ice thickness. In-ice chl a in the Arctic Ocean remained below 0.39 mg chl a m−2, whereas it exceeded 7 mg chl a m−2 during Antarctic winter, when water chl a concentrations remained below 1.5 mg chl a m−2, thus highlighting its potential as an important carbon source for overwintering organisms. The data analyzed in this study can improve large-scale physical and ecosystem models, habitat mapping studies and time series analyzed in the context of climate change effects and marine management.

Impact of Local Atmospheric Intraseasonal Variability on Mean Sea Ice State in the Arctic Ocean

Abstract:The Arctic atmosphere shows significant variability on intraseasonal time scales of 10-90 days. The intraseasonal variability in the Arctic sea ice is clearly related to that in the Arctic atmosphere. It is well known that the Arctic mean sea ice state is governed by the local mean atmospheric state. However, the response of the Arctic mean sea ice state to the local atmospheric intraseasonal variability is unclear. The Arctic atmospheric intraseasonal variability exists in both the thermodynamical and dynamical variables. Based on a sea ice-ocean coupled simulation with a quantitative sea ice budget analysis, this study finds that 1) the intraseasonal atmospheric thermodynamical variability tends to reduce sea ice melting through changing the downward heat flux on the open water area in the marginal sea ice zone, and the intraseasonal atmospheric dynamical variability tends to increase sea ice melting by a combination of modified air-ocean heat fluxes, ice-ocean heat fluxes, and sea ice deformation; 2) the intraseasonal atmospheric dynamical variability increases summertime sea ice concentration in the Beaufort Sea and the Greenland Sea but decreases summertime sea ice concentration along the Eurasian continent in the East Siberia-Laptev-Kara Seas, resulting from the joint effects of the modified air-ocean heat fluxes, ice-ocean heat fluxes, and the sea ice deformation, as well as the mean sea ice advection due to the changes of sea ice drift. The large spread in sea ice in the CMIP models may be partly attributed to the different model performances in representing the observed atmospheric intraseasonal variability. Reliable modeling of atmospheric intraseasonal variability is an essential condition in correctly projecting future sea ice evolution.

Abstract:Mesoscale eddies play an important role in driving the dynamics of the Arctic Ocean. Understanding their behavior is crucial for comprehending the ongoing changes in the region. In this study, by using a novel decade‐long simulation at 1 km resolution with the unstructured‐mesh Finite volumE Sea ice‐Ocean Model, we evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of eddy kinetic energy in the Eurasian Basin. We find that monthly, annual, and interannual variability of EKE near the surface is predominantly influenced by changes in sea ice cover, while the eddy activity at deeper depth, being shielded from the surface by ocean stratification, is more strongly influenced by local baroclinic energy conversion. Moreover, our research demonstrates that eddies in the Eurasian Basin can transport ocean heat from the Atlantic Water layer toward sea ice and cause local basal melting in the order of about 20 cm per month even in wintertime. Our study suggests that eddy activity in the Arctic Ocean will strengthen along with future sea ice decline, and that the impact of ocean heat of the Atlantic Water layer on sea ice retreat may become prominent.

Abstract:Abstract Atmospheric circulation has significant impacts on sea ice drifting patterns and mass balance, as wind drag induces pressure ridges and leads on the sea ice surface. In this study, the spatiotemporal distributions of these dynamic sea ice deformation features in the Ross Sea are examined using ICESat‐2 (IS2) ATL10 freeboard data (2019–2022). The temporal variation of the modal sea ice thickness (SIT), caused by thermodynamic ice growth and sea ice advection, varies from 0.7–1.0 m in April to 1.0–1.6 m in July–September and decreases thereafter in the northwest (NW) and northeast (NE) sectors. This temporal variation of modal SIT agrees with the air temperature (correlation coefficients >0.5). The southwest (SW) sector shows a consistently low modal SIT (<1.0 m) because of the production of new ice in polynyas and continuous northward sea ice drift. Meanwhile, the southeast (SE) sector shows the thickest ice in Octobers 2019 and 2020 because of the advection of thick ice from the Amundsen Sea, which was reduced in 2021 and 2022. In terms of dynamic sea ice deformation, the SE sector shows the largest deformation because of the wind‐driven convergence of sea ice movement. However, such intense deformation in the SE sector diminished in 2021 and 2022 due to the dominance of strong southerly wind associated with the Amundsen Sea Low (ASL). This study emphasizes the potential of IS2 sea ice products to assess the role of atmospheric driving forces on thermodynamic and dynamic sea ice changes.

Abstract:Two large ensemble simulations are adopted to investigate the relative contribution of external forcing and internal variability to Arctic sea ice variability on different timescales since 1960 by correcting the response error of models to external forcing using observational datasets. Our study suggests that previous approaches might overestimate the real impact of internal variability on Arctic sea ice change especially on long time scales. Our results indicate that in both March and September, internal variability plays a dominant role on all time scales over the 20th century, while the anthropogenic signal on sea ice change can be steadily and consistently detected on a time scale of more than 20 year after 2000s. We also reveal that the dominant mode of internal variability in March shows consistency across different time scales. On the contrary, the pattern of internal variability in September is highly nonuniform over the Arctic and varies across different timescales, indicating that sea ice internal variability in September at different time scales is driven by different factors.

Abstract:The past provides evidence of abrupt climate shifts and changes in the frequency of climate and weather extremes. We explore the non‐linear response to orbital forcing and then consider climate millennial variability down to daily weather events. Orbital changes are translated into regional responses in temperature, where the precessional response is related to nonlinearities and seasonal biases in the system. We question regularities found in climate events by analyzing the distribution of inter‐event waiting times. Periodicities of about 900 and 1150 years are found in ice cores besides the prominent 1500‐years cycle. However, the variability remains indistinguishable from a random process, suggesting that centennial‐to‐millennial variability is stochastic in nature. New numerical techniques are developed allowing for a high resolution in the dynamically relevant regions like coasts, major upwelling regions, and high latitudes. Using this model, we find a strong sensitivity of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation depending on where the deglacial meltwater is injected into. Meltwater into the Mississippi and near Labrador hardly affect the large‐scale ocean circulation, whereas subpolar hosing mimicking icebergs yields a quasi shutdown. The same multi‐scale approach is applied to radiocarbon simulations enabling a dynamical interpretation of marine sediment cores. Finally, abrupt climate events also have counterparts in the recent climate records, revealing a close link between climate variability, the statistics of North Atlantic weather patterns, and extreme events.

Ice type matters: impacts of landfast and drift ice on body condition in a high Arctic seabird community

Abstract:Sea ice, a central component of polar ecosystems, is undergoing profound changes due to climate change. In particular, the Arctic is experiencing unprecedented warming at quicker rates than other regions. This alarming trend of sea ice loss has dire consequences, with spill-over effects on the entire ecosystem, from phytoplankton to top predators. The complex and dynamic nature of sea ice gives rise to diverse habitats, each with the potential to affect larger ecosystems in different ways. However, our understanding of the relative importance of different ice types for higher trophic levels remains limited. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a comprehensive study of the effects of drift ice, landfast ice, and total sea ice extent (landfast ice + drift ice) on the body condition of six species of polar-breeding seabirds using long-term monitoring data (2003-2021) from Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. These species fell into two categories: Arctic species (Little Auk Alle alle , Brünnich's Guillemot Uria lomvia , and Glaucous Gull Larus hyperboreus ) and "boreal" (or north temperate) species (Black-legged Kittiwake Rissa tridactyl a, Arctic Skua Stercorarius parasiticus , and Great Skua Stercorarius skua ). We found that the presence and extent of different types of sea ice may have different effects on seabird body condition. Though we did not find any relationship between total sea-ice extent and seabird body condition, drift ice and landfast ice extent did produce significant effects. For Arctic species, these effects were positive. For boreal species, the relationship between body condition and drift and landfast ice was more complex. Our study suggests that the use of a non-specific sea ice variable may mask the effects of sea ice on Arctic wildlife, highlighting the importance of not considering sea ice to be uniform and simple habitat.

Abstract:The basal channel is a detailed morphological feature of the ice shelf caused by uneven basal melting. This kind of specifically morphology is widely distributed in polar ice shelves. It is an important research object of sea-ice interaction and plays a vital role in studying the relationship between the ice sheet/ice shelf and global warming. In this paper, high-resolution remote sensing image and ice penetration data were combined to extract the basal channel of the Pine Island Ice Shelf. The depth variation of Pine Island Ice Shelf in the recent 20 years was analyzed and discussed by using ICESat-1, ICESat-2, and IceBridge data. Combined with relevant marine meteorological elements (sea surface temperature, surface melting days, circumpolar deep water and wind) to analyze the basal channel changes, the redistribution of ocean heat is considered to be the most important factor affecting the evolution and development of the basal channel.
