Abstract:Sea ice algae play an important role in the Arctic Ocean ecosystem, driving primary production in the spring and sequestering carbon to the deep ocean. Up to 45% of Arctic Ocean primary production occurs in ice‐covered areas; photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) is fundamental to driving this production. Sea ice, and particularly snow, strongly scatter and reflect light, reducing the amount of PAR transmitted to the ice‐ocean interface. The effect that varying thicknesses of sea ice (0.2–3.5 m) and snow (0.01–1 m) have on the value of PAR transmittance at the ice‐ocean interface are considered for a Winter, Spring, and Summer scenario. When characteristic Arctic Ocean conditions (2 m sea ice and ∼0.2 m snowpack) are modeled, there is roughly a two‐fold difference in PAR transmittance at the ice‐ocean interface between the Winter (0.003) and Spring (0.007) scenarios and an order of magnitude difference with the Summer scenario (0.04). The modeled values correlate within one standard deviation of measured values and show good agreement with extended pan‐Arctic Ocean field campaign measurements. The results also indicate that simple exponential decay methods may lead to inaccurate results, and radiative‐transfer modeling is required to accurately predict PAR transmittance at the ice‐ocean interface. Therefore, this study offers a novel mathematical technique to predict the value of PAR transmittance at the ice‐ocean interface. Coupled with year‐round near‐real‐time sea ice and snow thickness remote sensing data, this technique may improve understanding of primary production and carbon budgets in the changing Arctic Ocean.

Abstract:During the fourth Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition cruise in summer 2010, a time-series observation was carried out to examine the response of nutrients and phytoplankton community in the ice-water interface to the ice melting ice in the central Arctic Ocean. Phosphate and silicate in the ice-water interface were rich relative to dissolved inorganic nitrogen （DIN）, based on the Redfield ratio （16N:1P:16Si）, suggesting that DIN was the potential limiting nutrient. DIN concentrations in the sea ice were about 3-4 times that in the surface seawater, indicating that melting ice delivered DIN to the surface water. Pigment analysis showed that fucoxanthin and chlorophyll a contribute to carotenoids and chlorophylls in particles. The mean concentrations of chlorophyll c,diatoxanthin, diadinoxanthin and fucoxanthin from 15 August to 18 August were 6 μgm-3, 22 μgm-3, 73 μgm-3 and 922 μg·m-3, respectively, suggesting that diatoms dominated in the phytoplankton community composition.Furthermore, a notable enhancement in fucoxanthin and chlorophyll a during a large-scale ice melting was likely attributed to senescent diatoms released from the bottom sea-ice as well as phytoplankton diatoms growth in the water column due to the input of nutrients （i.e., DIN） and reducing light limitation from melting ice. Temporal distribution patterns of prasinoxanthin and lutein differed from fucoxanthin, indicating that the response of green algae and diatoms to ice melting were different.

Abstract:Seasonal meltwater input creates a thin freshen layer in surface seawater under ice, which largely shifts the algae assemblages. Our recent observation of photosynthetic pigments in the high Arctic showed that ice bottom and 5 m of seawater under ice contained relatively high concentration of fucoxanthin, while chlorophyll b and lutein were the major diagnostic pigments in ice-water interface and 0 m of seawater under ice. Additionally, a notable change of dominant phytoplankton occurred in the top 5 m of seawater under ice, from chlorophytes-dominated at surface to diatoms-dominated at 5 m depth, which might attribute to the sharp salinity gradient (salinity from 12.5 to 28.1) in the surface seawater under ice. Our results imply that phytoplankton community in surface layer under ice would become more chlorophytes in the future warming Arctic Ocean.
Light Absorption in Arctic Sea Ice: Chlorophyll and Black Carbon

Abstract:Arctic sea ice extent has declined continuously for the past decade, owing partially to light absorption by black carbon (BC) and other impurities deposited on snow and the underlying pack. We present simulations for the contemporary period showing that the optical depth contributed by Arctic ice algal chlorophyll may be comparable during Boreal Spring to the corresponding values attributable to BC. The largest chlorophyll attenuation is obtained in the bottom layer, which supports pigment concentrations of about 300 to 1000 mg/m3 in the Bering Sea and Sea of Okhotsk. However, chlorophyll concentrations for the ice interior in regions north of 75° N and across the Canadian Archipelago are less than 0.1 micro g/m3. Freeboard and infiltration communities lead to intermediate levels of light removal. Since BC works its way downward from the atmospheric interface, there will be regions where it appropriates photosynthetic capability. Where ice thicknesses permit significant penetration through the pack column the ice algae may be crucial absorbers. We propose a continuous increase in relative chlorophyll activity and attenuation in the future, as biological activity becomes stronger in thin ice toward the center of the Arctic basin. A shift in relative importance of the two absorber types could occur as total BC mixing ratios are reduced because of environmental advocacy.

Review of Sea Ice Albedo Parameterizations

Abstract:Associated with global warming,the Arctic sea ice has been undergoing rapid changes for the three decades,including the decline of sea ice extent and thinning of sea ice thickness.As a result,the snow/sea ice-albedo positive feedback mechanism is becoming more and more important.Currently,a diversity of sea ice albedo parameterizations are used in climate system models and standalone sea ice models,ranging from simple to complex.In this paper,we reviewed previous studies on the evaluations of the snow/ice albedo parameterizations,and discussed some problems of the satellite-derived surface albedo for the ice covered ocean.We put forward some ongoing issues related to further developments of the albedo parameterizations as climate warms,including melt ponds and leads.Also,we discussed the potential impacts of the lack of observational data on the development of the albedo parameterization.
Relative Impact of Sea Ice and Temperature Changes on Arctic Marine Production

Abstract:We use a modern Earth system model to approximate the relative importance of ice versus temperature on Arctic marine ecosystem dynamics. We show that while the model adequately simulates ice volume, water temperature, air‐sea CO2 flux, and annual primary production in the Arctic, itunderestimates upper water column nitrate across the region. This nitrate bias is likely responsible for the apparent underestimation of ice algae production. Despite this shortcoming, the model appears to be a useful tool for exploring the impacts of environmental change on phytoplankton production and carbon dynamics over the Arctic Ocean. Our experiments indicate that under a warmer climate scenario, the percentage of ocean warming that could be apportioned to a reduction in ice area ranged from 11% to 100%, while decreasing ice area could account for 22–100% of the increase in annual ocean primary production. The change to CO2 air‐sea flux in response to ice and temperature changes averaged an Arctic‐wide 5.5 Tg C yr−1 (3.5%) increase, into the ocean. This increased carbon sink may be short‐lived, as ice cover continues to decrease and the ocean warms. The change in carbon fixation from phytoplankton in response to increased temperatures and reduced ice was generally more than a magnitude larger than the changes to CO2 flux, highlighting the importance of fully considering changes to the marine ecosystem when assessing Arctic carbon cycle dynamics. Our work demonstrates the importance of ice dynamics in controlling ocean warming and production and thus the need for well‐behaved ice and BGC models within Earth system models if we hope to accurately predict Arctic changes.
Albedo Enhancement of Marine Clouds to Counteract Global Warming: Impacts on the Hydrological Cycle

Abstract:Recent studies have shown that changes in solar radiation affect the hydrological cycle more strongly than equivalent CO2 changes for the same change in global mean surface temperature. Thus, solar radiation management "geoengineering" proposals to completely offset global mean temperature increases by reducing the amount of absorbed sunlight might be expected to slow the global water cycle and reduce runoff over land. However, proposed countering of global warming by increasing the albedo of marine clouds would reduce surface solar radiation only over the oceans. Here, for an idealized scenario, we analyze the response of temperature and the hydrological cycle to increased reflection by clouds over the ocean using an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to a mixed layer ocean model. When cloud droplets are reduced in size over all oceans uniformly to offset the temperature increase from a doubling of atmospheric CO2, the global-mean precipitation and evaporation decreases by about 1.3% but runoff over land increases by 7.5% primarily due to increases over tropical land. In the model, more reflective marine clouds cool the atmospheric column over ocean. The result is a sinking motion over oceans and upward motion over land. We attribute the increased runoff over land to this increased upward motion over land when marine clouds are made more reflective. Our results suggest that, in contrast to other proposals to increase planetary albedo, offsetting mean global warming by reducing marine cloud droplet size does not necessarily lead to a drying, on average, of the continents. However, we note that the changes in precipitation, evaporation and P-E are dominated by small but significant areas, and given the highly idealized nature of this study, a more thorough and broader assessment would be required for proposals of altering marine cloud properties on a large scale.
Response of Antarctic sea-ice algae to an experimental decrease in pH: a preliminary analysis from chlorophyll fluorescence imaging of melting ice

Abstract:Microorganisms confined to annual sea ice in the Southern Ocean are exposed to highly variable oxygen and carbonate chemistry dynamics because of the seasonal increase in biomass and limited exchange with the underlying water column. For sea-ice algae, physiological stress is likely to be exacerbated when the ice melts; however, variation in carbonate speciation has rarely been monitored during this important state-transition. Using pulse amplitude modulated fluorometry (Imaging-PAM, Walz), we documented in situ changes in the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) of sea-ice algae melting out into seawater with initial pH values ranging from 7.66 to 6.39. Although the process of ice-melt elevated seawater pH by 0.2–0.55 units, we observed a decrease in Fv/Fm between 0.02 and 0.06 for each unit drop in pH during real-time fluorescence imaging. These results are considered preliminary but provide context for including carbonate chemistry monitoring in the design of future sea ice state-transition experiments. Imaging-PAM is a reliable technology for determining Fv/Fm, but is of limited use for obtaining additional photosynthetic parameters when imaging melting ice.

Effects of phytoplankton species composition on absorption spectra and modeled hyperspectral reflectance

Abstract:Understanding the spectral characteristics of remotely-sensed reflectance by different phytoplankton species can assist in the development of algorithms to identify various algal groups using satellite ocean color remote sensing. One of the main challenges is to separate the effect of species composition on the reflectance spectrum from other factors such as pigment concentration and particle size structure. Measuring the absorption spectra of nine different cultured algae, and estimating the reflectance of the different species, provides a useful approach to study the effects of species composition on the bio-optical properties. The results show that the absorption spectra of different species exhibit different spectral characteristics and that species composition can significantly change the absorption characteristics at four main peaks (438, 536, 600 and 650nm). A ‘distance angle index’ was used to compare different phytoplankton species. Results indicate that this index can be used to identify species from the absorption spectra, using a database of standard absorption spectra of known species as reference. By taking into account the role of species composition in the phytoplankton absorption model, the performance of the model can be improved by up to 5%. A reflectance-species model is developed to estimate the remotely-sensed reflectance from the absorption spectra, and the reflectance of different phytoplankton species at the same chlorophyll-a concentration is compared, to understand effects of species composition on the reflectance spectra. Different phytoplankton species can cause up to 33% difference in the modeled reflectance at short wavelengths under the condition of the same chlorophyll-a concentration, and variations in the reflectance spectrum correspond to the colors of the algae. The standard deviation of the reflectance among different species shows that the variations from 400 to 450nm are sensitive to species composition at low chlorophyll-a concentrations, whereas variations in the 510 to 550nm range are more sensitive under high chlorophyll-a concentrations. For this reason, the green bands may be more suitable for estimating species composition from hyperspectral satellite data during bloom conditions, whereas the blue bands may be more helpful in detection of species under low chlorophyll-a concentrations. In this theoretical approach, variations in reflectance at the same chlorophyll-a concentration can be used to identify phytoplankton species. Another approach to identify phytoplankton species from remotely-sensed hyperspectral reflectance measurements would be to derive the absorption spectra of phytoplankton from the reflectance measurements, and compare these with a standard database of absorption spectra.
Effects of sea ice melt water input on phytoplankton biomass and community structure in the eastern Amundsen Sea

Abstract:Sea ice melt water and circumpolar deep water (CDW) intrusion have important impacts on the ecosystem of the Amundsen Sea. In this study, samples of nutrients and phytoplankton pigments from nine stations in the eastern Amundsen Sea were collected during the austral summer. Based on in-situ hydrological observations, sea ice density data from satellite remote sensing, and chemical taxonomy calculations, the relationships between environmental factors and phytoplankton biomass and community structure were studied. The results showed that with increasing latitude, the contribution of sea ice melt water (MW％) and the stability of the water body increased, and the depth of the mixed layer (MLD) decreased. The integrated concentration of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) ranged from 21.4 mg·m?2 to 148.4 mg·m?2 (the average value was 35.7±53.4 mg·m?2). Diatoms (diatoms-A [Fragilariopsis spp., Chaetoceros spp., and Proboscia spp.] and diatoms-B [Pseudonitzschia spp.]) and Phaeocystis antarctica were the two most widely distributed phytoplankton groups and contributed 32％±16％ and 28％±11％, respectively, of the total biomass. The contributions of Dinoflagellates, Chlorophytes, Cryptophytes, the high-iron group of P. antarctica, and Diatom group A were approximately 17％±8％, 15％±13％, 9％±6％, 5％±9％, and 3％±7％, respectively. The area with the highest phytoplankton biomass was located near the ice-edge region, with a short time lag (Tlag) between sampling and complete sea ice melt and a high MW％, while the area with the second-highest Chl-a concentration was located in the area affected by the upwelling of CDW, with thorough water mixing. Vertically, in the area with a short Tlag and a shallow MLD, the phytoplankton biomass and proportion of diatoms decreased rapidly with increasing water depth. In contrast, in the region with a long Tlag and limited CDW upwelling, the phytoplankton community was dominated by a relatively constant and high proportion of micro phytoplankton, and the phytoplankton biomass was low and relatively stable vertically. Generally, the phytoplankton community structure and biomass in the study area showed high spatial variation and were sensitive to environmental changes.
Photobiology of sea ice algae during initial spring growth in Kangerlussuaq, West Greenland: insights from imaging variable chlorophyll fluorescence of ice cores

Abstract:We undertook a series of measurements of photophysiological parameters of sea ice algae over 12 days of early spring growth in a West Greenland Fjord, by variable chlorophyll fluorescence imaging. Imaging of the ice-water interface showed the development of ice algae in 0.3-0.4 mm wide brine channels between laminar ice crystals in the lower 4-6 mm of the ice, with a several-fold spatial variation in inferred biomass on cm scales. The maximum quantum yield of photosynthesis, F(v) /F(m), was initially low (~0.1), though this increased rapidly to ~0.5 by day 6. Day 6 also saw the onset of biomass increase, the cessation of ice growth and the time at which brine had reached <50 psu and >-2 °C. We interpret this as indicating that the establishment of stable brine channels at close to ambient salinity was required to trigger photosynthetically active populations. Maximum relative electron transport rate (rETR(max)), saturation irradiance (E(k)) and photosynthetic efficiency (α) had also stabilised by day 6 at 5-6 relative units, ~30 μmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹ and 0.4-0.5 μmol photons m⁻²s⁻¹, respectively. E(k) was consistent with under-ice irradiance, which peaked at a similar value, confirming that daytime irradiance was adequate to facilitate photosynthetic activity throughout the study period. Photosynthetic parameters showed no substantial differences with depth within the ice, nor variation between cores or brine channels suggesting that during this early phase of ice algal growth cells were unaffected by gradients of environmental conditions within the ice. Variable chlorophyll fluorescence imaging offers a tool to determine how this situation may change over time and as brine channels and algal populations evolve.
A significant change in sea ice diffuse attenuation coefficient with temperature and its implications for the Arctic Ocean

Abstract:Sea ice transparency is essential to the ecology of the ice‐covered sea. Research suggests that the diffuse attenuation coefficient of downwelling irradiance (Kd ) varies with ice temperature (Tice ); however, the characteristics of its response are not well understood yet, particularly from a quantitative perspective. In an attempt to fill this gap, three independent laboratory experiments were performed between 2016 and 2022 to investigate the variations of Kd with changing Tice . Validation experiments were further performed in Liaodong Bay in 2018 and 2022. To explore the dominant factors controlling this phenomenon, corresponding changes in scattering properties were estimated through a two‐stream radiative transfer model. To examine its implications for local ice algal primary production and radiation transport, Kd of Arctic sea ice was parameterized as a function of Tice . Our results from the laboratory and field experiments showed that Kd decreases (increases) with ice warming (cooling), and a 1°C change in Tice results in a 0.29 m−1 average change in Kd . The response of Kd to Tice between −9°C and −2°C is more notable than that observed between −24°C and −9°C. This is associated with the different variations in the scattering properties of sea ice. It reveals a significant effect on ice algal primary production under severe light‐limited conditions but a weaker effect on radiation transport. Knowledge of this Kd ‐temperature dependence would further improve our understanding of the optical properties of sea ice and the parameterization of ice transparency in large‐scale climate models.

Mapping the in situ microspatial distribution of ice algal biomass through hyperspectral imaging of sea-ice cores

Abstract:Ice-associated microalgae make a significant seasonal contribution to primary production and biogeochemical cycling in polar regions. However, the distribution of algal cells is driven by strong physicochemical gradients which lead to a degree of microspatial variability in the microbial biomass that is significant, but difficult to quantify. We address this methodological gap by employing a field-deployable hyperspectral scanning and photogrammetric approach to study sea-ice cores. The optical set-up facilitated unsupervised mapping of the vertical and horizontal distribution of phototrophic biomass in sea-ice cores at mm-scale resolution (using chlorophyll a [Chl a] as proxy), and enabled the development of novel spectral indices to be tested against extracted Chl a (R2 ≤ 0.84). The modelled bio-optical relationships were applied to hyperspectral imagery captured both in situ (using an under-ice sliding platform) and ex situ (on the extracted cores) to quantitatively map Chl a in mg m-2 at high-resolution (≤ 2.4 mm). The optical quantification of Chl a on a per-pixel basis represents a step-change in characterising microspatial variation in the distribution of ice-associated algae. This study highlights the need to increase the resolution at which we monitor under-ice biophysical systems, and the emerging capability of hyperspectral imaging technologies to deliver on this research goal.
Biomolecular Composition of Sea Ice Microalgae and Its Influence on Marine Biogeochemical Cycling and Carbon Transfer through Polar Marine Food Webs

Abstract:Microalgae growing on the underside of sea ice are key primary producers in polar marine environments. Their nutritional status, determined by their macromolecular composition, contributes to the region’s biochemistry and the unique temporal and spatial characteristics of their growth makes them essential for sustaining polar marine food webs. Here, we review the plasticity and taxonomic diversity of sea ice microalgae macromolecular composition, with a focus on how different environmental conditions influence macromolecular production and partitioning within cells and communities. The advantages and disadvantages of methodologies for assessing macromolecular composition are presented, including techniques that provide high throughput, whole macromolecular profile and/or species-specific resolution, which are particularly recommended for future studies. The directions of environmentally driven macromolecular changes are discussed, alongside anticipated consequences on nutrients supplied to the polar marine ecosystem. Given that polar regions are facing accelerated rates of environmental change, it is argued that a climate change signature will become evident in the biochemical composition of sea ice microalgal communities, highlighting the need for further research to understand the synergistic effects of multiple environmental stressors. The importance of sea ice microalgae as primary producers in polar marine ecosystems means that ongoing research into climate-change driven macromolecular phenotyping is critical to understanding the implications for the regions biochemical cycling and carbon transfer.

Abstract:Significance Processes that darken the surface of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) enhance energy absorption and accelerate melt, with consequences for global sea-level rise. Here, we demonstrate how summer blooms of “glacier algae” darken the ice surface, significantly impacting the physical integrity of the environment. We identify and quantify the energy regulation mechanisms employed by glacier algae to balance their requirements for photosynthesis and growth with the extreme light and temperature regime of the GrIS, demonstrating how these mechanisms are optimized to darken and melt the ice surface. Our findings are critical for the incorporation of biological feedbacks into predictive models of GrIS surface runoff and provide unique insight into how photoautotrophic life excels within icy environments.
Strategies for the Simulation of Sea Ice Organic Chemistry: Arctic Tests and Development

Abstract:A numerical mechanism connecting ice algal ecodynamics with the buildup of organic macromolecules is tested within modeled pan-Arctic brine channels. The simulations take place offline in a reduced representation of sea ice geochemistry. Physical driver quantities derive from the global sea ice code CICE, including snow cover, thickness and internal temperature. The framework is averaged over ten boreal biogeographic zones. Computed nutrient-light-salt limited algal growth supports grazing, mortality and carbon flow. Vertical transport is diffusive but responds to pore structure. Simulated bottom layer chlorophyll maxima are reasonable, though delayed by about a month relative to observations due to uncertainties in snow variability. Upper level biota arise intermittently during flooding events. Macromolecular concentrations are tracked as proxy proteins, polysaccharides, lipids and refractory humics. The fresh biopolymers undergo succession and removal by bacteria. Baseline organics enter solely through cell disruption, thus the internal carbon content is initially biased low. By including exudation, agreement with dissolved organic or individual biopolymer data is achieved given strong release coupled to light intensity. Detrital carbon then reaches hundreds of micromolar, sufficient to support structural changes to the ice matrix.

Effects of Ice-Microstructure-Based Inherent Optical Properties Parameterization in the CICE Model

Abstract:The constant inherent optical properties (IOPs) for sea ice currently applied in sea ice models do not realistically represent the dividing of shortwave radiative fluxes in sea ice and the ocean below it. Here we implement a parameterization of variable IOPs based on ice microstructures in the Los Alamos sea ice model, version 6.0 (CICE6) and investigate its effects on the simulation of the dividing of shortwave radiation and sea ice in the Arctic. Our sensitivity experiments indicate that variable IOP parameterization results in strong seasonal variation for the IOP parameters, typically reaching the seasonal maximum in the boreal summer. With such large differences, variable IOP parameterization leads to increased absorbed solar radiation at the surface and in the interior of Arctic sea ice relative to constant IOPs, up to ~3 W/m2, but decreased solar radiation penetrating into the ocean, up to ~5–6 W/m2. The changes in the dividing of shortwave fluxes in sea ice and the ocean below it induced by the variable IOPs have significant influence on Arctic sea ice thickness by modulating surface and bottom melting and frazil ice formation (increasing surface melting by ~16% and reducing bottom melting by ~11% in summer).

Abstract:High‐latitude oceans experience strong seasonality where low light limits photosynthetic activity most of the year. This limitation is pronounced for algae within and underlying sea ice, and these algae are uniquely acclimated to low light levels. During spring melt, however, light intensity and daylength increase drastically, triggering blooms of ice algae that play important roles in carbon cycling and ecosystem productivity. How the algae acclimate to this dynamic and heterogeneous environment is poorly understood. Here, we measured 14C‐carbon fixation rates, photophysiology, and ribulose 1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (Rubisco) content of sea‐ice algae in coastal waters near the western Antarctic Peninsula during spring, ranging from a low‐light‐acclimated, bottom community to a light‐saturated bloom. Carbon fixation rates by sea‐ice algae were similar to other Antarctic sea‐ice measurements (2–49 mg C m−2 d−1), and there was little phytoplankton biomass in the underlying water at the time of sampling. Net‐to‐gross ratios of carbon fixation were generally high and showed no relationship with ice type. We found algal photophysiology and Rubisco concentrations varied in relation to the different types of ice, altering the balance between the photochemical and biochemical processes that constrain carbon fixation rates. For algae inhabiting the bottom layers of sea ice, rates of carbon fixation were largely constrained by light availability whereas in surface seawater, interior and rotten/brash ice, carbon fixation rates could be calculated with reasonable accuracy from measurements of Rubisco concentrations. This work provides additional insight and means to evaluate carbon fixation rates as sea ice continues to change in future.

Abstract:Ice algae thriving within sea ice play a crucial role in transferring energy to higher trophic levels and influencing biogeochemical processes in polar oceans; however, the distribution of organic matter within the ice interior is not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the vertical distribution of organic matter, including chlorophyll a (Chl-a), particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC and PON), carbohydrates (CHO), proteins (PRT), lipids (LIP), and food material (FM), within the sea ice. Samples were collected from the bottom, middle, and top sections of the sea ice column near Cambridge Bay during the spring of 2018. Based on the δ 13 C signature, biochemical composition, and POC contribution of biopolymeric carbon (BPC), the organic substances within the sea ice were predominantly attributed to marine autotrophs. While the highest concentrations of each parameter were observed at the sea ice bottom, notable concentrations were also found in the upper sections. The average sea ice column-integrated Chl- a concentration was 5.05 ± 2.26 mg m −2 , with the bottom ice section contributing 59% (S.D. = ± 10%) to the total integration. The column-integrated concentrations of FM, BPC, POC, and PON were 2.05 ± 0.39, 1.10 ± 0.20, 1.47 ± 0.25, and 0.09 ± 0.03 g m −2 , respectively. Contributions of the bottom ice section to these column-integrated concentrations varied for each parameter, with values of 20 ± 6, 21 ± 7, 19 ± 5, and 28 ± 7%, respectively. While the bottom ice section exhibited a substantial Chl- a contribution in line with previous studies, significantly higher contributions of the other parameters were observed in the upper sea ice sections. This suggests that the particulate matter within the interior of the sea ice could potentially serve as an additional food source for higher trophic grazers or act as a seeding material for a phytoplankton bloom during the ice melting season. Our findings highlight the importance of comprehensive field measurements encompassing the entire sea ice section to better understand the distribution of organic carbon pools within the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean.

Abstract:We present the analysis of global sympagic primary production (PP) from 300 years of pre-industrial and historical simulations of the E3SMv1.1-BGC model. The model includes a novel, eight-element sea ice biogeochemical component, MPAS-Seaice zbgc, which is resolved in three spatial dimensions and uses a vertical transport scheme based on internal brine dynamics. Modeled ice algal chlorophyll-a concentrations and column-integrated values are broadly consistent with observations, though chl-a profile fractions indicate that upper ice communities of the Southern Ocean are underestimated. Simulations of polar integrated sea ice PP support the lower bound in published estimates for both polar regions with mean Arctic values of 7.5 and 15.5 TgC/a in the Southern Ocean. However, comparisons of the polar climate state with observations, using a maximal bound for ice algal growth rates, suggest that the Arctic lower bound is a significant underestimation driven by biases in ocean surface nitrate, and that correction of these biases supports as much as 60.7 TgC/a of net Arctic PP. Simulated Southern Ocean sympagic PP is predominantly light-limited, and regional patterns, particularly in the coastal high production band, are found to be negatively correlated with snow thickness.
