Abstract:In the present work, molybdenum-doped WO 3 (Mo-doped WO 3 ) samples were synthesized using a starch-assisted co-precipitation approach by varying the dopant concentration. The structural, chemical, optical, and photocatalytic activities of the synthesized materials have been explored at different dopant concentrations. The structural behavior of the synthesized materials has been investigated using the X-ray diffraction technique which confirmed the monoclinic structure of Mo-doped WO 3 . Lattice parameters, microstrain, and dislocation density calculations were used to analyze the impact of the Mo on the WO 3 lattice. Raman and FTIR spectral analysis further confirmed the structural aspects. The FESEM images reveal the change in morphology of the samples at higher concentrations (10 wt% Mo-WO 3 ). Chemical composition was studied using XPS analysis. The bandgap and Urbach energy of the synthesized materials were determined and discussed using absorption data. With an increase in dopant concentration, it has been found that bandgap energy falls up to 2.59 eV while the Urbach energy rises to 337 meV for 10 wt% Mo-WO 3 . The theoretical calculation of the refractive index of synthesized samples was performed using several models. PL analysis has been used to corroborate the defect energy states in the synthesized samples. Rhodamine-B (RhB) and crystal violet (CV) dyes were used as model pollutants to analyze the photocatalytic activity of synthesized materials. The maximum photocatalytic activity was obtained with 10 wt% Mo-WO 3 which degraded almost 96% of RhB in 105 min and 98% CV in 90 min. Reusability tests were also carried out to examine the stability of samples. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of 10 wt% Mo-WO 3 NPs demonstrates its potential use in the treatment of wastewater.
