Abstract:Abstract: In recent years, flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors have been widely used as the energy storage devices for various smart and wearable electronic devices. However, the design and fabrication of high-performance flexible supercapacitor electrodes is still challenging since most of the active materials used for supercapacitor electrodes lack the ability to form flexible and mechanically stable structures. Recently, cellulose nanomaterials (mainly include cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibrils) have gained extensive interests due to their large specific surface areas, versatile surface chemistry, high mechanical strength, and the ability to form mechanically stable structures (e.g., films, aerogels). These days, the design of flexible supercapacitor electrodes by combining cellulose nanomaterials with different active materials gradually attracted the attention of scholars. The main objective of this review is to give an overview of recent developments in the preparation of cellulose nanomaterials based flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor electrodes. The fabrication approach, structure characterization, and electrochemical performance of the invented cellulose nanomaterials based flexible supercapacitor are elaborated. Also, the current challenges and future outlook for the design and fabrication of cellulose nanomaterials based flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor are proposed.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitor is an important kind of energy storage devices to power the flexible electronics because of its excellent capacitive performance, fast charging/discharging ability and long-term stability. Cellulose gel has become an ideal material as electrode or separator in flexible supercapacitors due to its hydrophilicity, high porosity, large specific surface area, low density and flexibility. This review first describes the structure and property of cellulose gel, and then summarizes its fabrication methods and application in flexible supercapacitors. Finally, some research ideas for the subsequent development of cellulose gel in the field of energy storage devices are outlined.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for high-performance electronic devices in smart textiles, various types of flexible/wearable electronic device (i.e., supercapacitors, batteries, fuel cells, etc.) have emerged regularly. As one of the most promising wearable devices, flexible supercapacitors from a variety of electrode materials have been developed. In particular, carbon materials from lignocellulosic biomass precursor have the characteristics of low cost, natural abundance, high specific surface area, excellent electrochemical stability, etc. Moreover, their chemical structures usually contain a large number of heteroatomic groups, which greatly contribute to the capacitive performance of the corresponding flexible supercapacitors. This review summarizes the working mechanism, configuration of flexible electrodes, conversion of lignocellulosic biomass-derived carbon electrodes, and their corresponding electrochemical properties in flexible/wearable supercapacitors. Technology challenges and future research trends will also be provided.

Abstract:The progress of flexible/wearable electronic devices with multi-functionality has stimulated the rapid development of the matching power supply devices. Flexible supercapacitors with high electrochemical performance and mechanical flexibility are considered as attractive technologies to power flexible electronics and have been studied intensively. Carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotube, graphene, and their composites, possess unprecedented physical/chemical properties and exhibit great potential for use in flexible supercapacitors. In this review, the recent progress of state-of-the-art flexible supercapacitors using advanced carbon nanomaterials is expounded comprehensively and systematically, the topic covered the micro/nano-structure control, macroscopic morphologies design, property optimization and application of carbon nanomaterials. Based on the current advances, the challenges and prospects of carbon nanomaterials applied in flexible supercapacitors are outlined and highlighted. As last, the matching between the characters of carbon nanomaterials, construction of flexible supercapacitors and fabrication technologies are put forward.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors, as one of most promising emerging energy storage devices, are of great interest owing to their high power density with great mechanical compliance, making them very suitable as power back-ups for future stretchable electronics. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, including the quasi-2D graphene and inorganic graphene-like materials (IGMs), have been greatly explored to providing huge potential for the development of flexible supercapacitors with higher electrochemical performance. This review article is devoted to recent progresses in engineering 2D nanomaterials for flexible supercapacitors, which survey the evolution of electrode materials, recent developments in 2D nanomaterials and their hybrid nanostructures with regulated electrical properties, and the new planar configurations of flexible supercapacitors. Furthermore, a brief discussion on future directions, challenges and opportunities in this fascinating area is also provided.

Abstract:The rise of personalized flexible electronics has promoted the rapid development of flexible supercapacitors due to their long service life, fast charging-discharging rates and safe operation. Different from the traditional flexible supercapacitors, the all-in-one integrated flexible supercapacitors are more resistant to deformation and lower interface resistance, which have a broader application prospect in the field of flexible electronics. This review briefly summarizes the preparation methods and electrochemical properties of some typical all-in-one supercapacitors, represented by planar and fibrous structures in recent years. Firstly, the basic understanding of traditional flexible supercapacitors and all-in-one integrated flexible supercapacitors, and the key parameters of the performance of flexible supercapacitors are introduced. Subsequently, the hydrogel matrix all-in-one supercapacitors with different functional characteristics (stretchable, self-healing and compressible) and the nonhydrogel matrix (separator, flexible membrane) all-in-one supercapacitors are discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and future development of flexible supercapacitors are considered.

Abstract:With the development of wearable and flexible electronic devices, there is an increasing demand for new types of flexible energy storage power supplies. The flexible supercapacitor has the advantages of fast charging and discharging, high power density, long cycle life, good flexibility, and bendability. Therefore, it exhibits great potential for use in flexible electronics. In flexible supercapacitors, graphene materials are often used as electrode materials due to the advantages of their high specific surface area, high conductivity, good mechanical properties, etc. In this review, the classification of flexible electrodes and some common flexible substrates are firstly summarized. Secondly, we introduced the advantages and disadvantages of five graphene-based materials used in flexible supercapacitors, including graphene quantum dots (GQDs), graphene fibers (GFbs), graphene films (GFs), graphene hydrogels (GHs), and graphene aerogels (GAs). Then, we summarized the latest developments in the application of five graphene-based materials for flexible electrodes. Finally, the defects and outlooks of GQDs, GFbs, GFs, GHs, and GAs used in flexible electrodes are given.

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid economic development, real-time monitoring of human health has received extensive attention. Wearable health monitoring equipment with good malleability and resistance to distortion makes great progress. The flexible supercapacitors integrated into the textile are characterized by a simple production process, low cost, fast charge,-discharge speed, and long cycle life. Therefore it has superior performance and broad research prospects. This review mainly introduces the recent advances and challenges of flexible supercapacitors, focusing on various flexible substrates' synthesis and performance. It summarizes the most representative flexible electrode materials at this stage. The future development trend and direction of flexible supercapacitors are discussed as well. Finally, the challenges in practical applications are considered.

Abstract:Substantial effort has been devoted to endowing flexible and wearable supercapacitors with desirable functions and solving urgent concerns regarding their practical application, particularly materials selection, air permeability, self-healability, shape memory, integration, and modularization. This gives rise to challenges with regard to both suitable materials and device fabrication. This review highlights the current state-of-the-art of these supercapacitors pertinent to materials, fabrication strategies, and performance. Challenges and solutions are also discussed to further improve their practicality. The aim of this review is to make a timely summary of this emerging field and discuss future opportunities and challenges.
Cellulose nanofiber/MXene (Ti3C2Tx)/liquid metal film as a highly performance and flexible electrode material for supercapacitors

Abstract:In recent times, there has been significant interest in the utilization of cellulose nanofiber (CNF) films as the foundation for supercapacitors due to their three-dimensional structure, flexibility and eco-friendliness. An ultrasonic and vacuum filtration method was used to prepare a hybrid film consisting of MXene (Ti3C2Tx), CNF and liquid metal (LM). The combination of CNF and LM with MXene produces a porous structure with higher electrical conductivity, which facilitates the transportation of ions and electrons within the composition and confers the material with heightened electrochemical properties. The CNF/MXene/LM electrode has a significant area capacitance of 871.3 mF cm-2 at a current density of 5 mA cm-2. The hybrid film demonstrates excellent stability, maintaining a high conductivity of 546.4 S∙cm-1 and retaining 96.9 % capacitance after 2000 cycles at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. By utilizing the thin film as an electrode, a high-performance quasi-solid supercapacitor was fabricated, with a remarkably thin thickness of only 0.319 mm. Supercapacitors show exceptional electrical properties, including a surface-specific capacitance of 188.2 mF cm-2 at a current density of 5 mA cm-2. This study indicates that flexible electrodes made from cellulose nanofiber have extensive potential in the realm of supercapacitors.

Abstract:This review presents a comprehensive summary of recent advances in flexible supercapacitor integrated systems, including their design of structure, materials, fabrication techniques, and applications. Based on the current progress, the existing challenges and future prospects are also outlined and discussed. There is a pressing need for flexible integrated systems owing to the swift progress of flexible electronics. Apart from flexibility, flexible supercapacitor (FSC) integrated systems exhibit certain characteristics like rapid charge–discharge rates, high power density, and excellent cycling stability, which makes them a promising candidate to serve as a vital component in flexible electronics. Abstract:MXenes have attracted considerable research interest in the field of energy storage due to their unique structure and favourable surface functional group properties. Recent efforts are focused extensively on synthesizing MXene composites for fabricating ideal electrode materials for energy storage applications. To fully exploit the characteristic features of MXene nanosheets and to ensure superb mechanical properties, cellulose is frequently used in combination with MXene to design high-potential functional nanocomposites. Cellulose serves as a promising reinforcing filler and flexible substrate due to its excellent mechanical strength. Its one-dimensional filamentous structure minimizes insulating contacts between 2D materials, enhancing both supercapacitive and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the 3D printing of micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) using MXene/cellulose inks yields desired printed interdigitated patterns with higher geometric accuracy, resulting in superior mechanical strength and capacitive performance. In this article, we present a comprehensive and timely review of recent research efforts and their outcomes related to the fabrication of flexible supercapacitors (SCs) based on MXene/cellulose composites. The scope extends to the fabrication of MXene/cellulose MSCs and electrodes that are wearable or free-standing. The initial sections of the article delve into the current synthesis methodologies for MAX phase and MXene, highlighting structural variations resulting from different synthesis procedures. Subsequently, we discuss the synthesis procedures for MXene/cellulose composites, the fabrication of MXene/cellulose based SCs, and their performance. Towards the end, we address existing research gaps and provide insights into future perspectives regarding MXene/cellulose SCs, drawing from the latest research findings. This review underscores the pivotal role played by MXene/cellulose composites in advancing the field of energy storage.

Abstract:Flexible solid‐state supercapacitors (FSSCs) have garnered significant attention due to their advantages, including lightness, adaptability, enhanced safety, and extensive operational potential windows. These features make them highly suitable as energy storage devices for the next generation of portable and flexible electronics. The recent surge in the development and remarkable breakthroughs in novel wearable electronics have further propelled research into FSSCs. Nevertheless, several pressing issues need to be addressed in this field, including synthesizing flexible electrode materials with superior electrochemical energy storage capabilities, enhancing the physicochemical properties of solid gel polymer electrolytes, particularly in extreme environments, and ensuring effective contact between electrodes and gel electrolytes. This paper presents an overview of the latest advancements in FSSCs, focusing on electrode materials and electrolytes. Additionally, it delves into the current challenges and future prospects of FSSCs.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have been considered a means of energy storage in portable electronic devices due to their acceptable specific capacitance and power density, high charge-discharge speed, and great flexibility. In this review, the results of recent studies were categorized from the point of view of the method used in the synthesis of nanocomposites, morphological studies, and electrochemical results. The importance of getting to know more about the synthesis of graphene-based materials used in flexible supercapacitors electrodes becomes apparent when the goal of the research is industrialization and scaling up. In this regard, the more comfortable synthesis and the lower cost of the material used caused the lower price of our final product. As well as, analyses related to the investigation of morphology will be very important from two aspects, the possibility of obtaining a correct view of the structure of the proposed materials and their capability for flexibility. Finally, the specific capacitance, energy density, power density, and cyclic life of a flexible supercapacitor were determined through electrochemical tests such as cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Abstract:Flexible solid-state supercapacitors are wide application in flexible electronics due to low cost, facial fabrication, long cycling life, excellent safety and so on. As-well known, the performance of flexible solid-state supercapacitors strongly depends on structure and properties of its current collector, electrode and electrolyte. However, there are few works t o simultaneously investigate the effect of current collector, electrode and electrolyte on performance of flexible solid-state supercapacitors. Here, the recent advances in flexible solid-state supercapacitors are summarized from design strategies to preparation, structure and properties of current collector, electrode and electrolyte. Especially, progress and challenge about current collector, free-standing electrode and gel electrolyte with anti-freezing, self-healing and self-discharging properties of flexible solid-state supercapacitors are also discussed in detail. Finally, we propose key research directions to design and prepare current collector, electrode and electrolyte for high-performance flexible solid-state supercapacitors.

Abstract:Nanocellulose has become one of the most attractive matrix materials for flexible supercapacitors, owing to the high surface area, good mechanical properties and environmental friendliness. Herein, we developed electrode materials with high capacitance and mechanical flexibility through the in-situ synthesis of polypyrrole (PPy) in TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCN)/sulfonated carbon nanotubes (SCNT) composite hydrogels. The TOCN/SCNT/PPy composite hydrogels were thus obtained via a bifunctional Fe3+ in-situ oxidation, showing high specific capacitance of 5299 mF/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2. Furthermore, the assembled symmetric TOCN-40SCNT-PPy solid-state supercapacitor exhibited outstanding capacitance of 375 mF/cm2 and electrochemical stability with 163.2 % capacitance retention at a current density of 1 mA/cm2 for 2500 cycles. These nanocellulose/carbon nanotube/polypyrrole hydrogels are thus promising in the fields of flexible solid-state supercapacitor with superior electrochemical performance.
