Abstract:Shape morphing is vital to locomotion in microscopic organisms but has been challenging to achieve in sub-millimetre robots. By overcoming obstacles associated with miniaturization, we demonstrate microscopic electronically configurable morphing metasheet robots. These metabots expand locally using a kirigami structure spanning five decades in length, from 10 nm electrochemically actuated hinges to 100 μm splaying panels making up the ~1 mm robot. The panels are organized into unit cells that can expand and contract by 40% within 100 ms. These units are tiled to create metasheets with over 200 hinges and independent electronically actuating regions that enable the robot to switch between multiple target geometries with distinct curvature distributions. By electronically actuating independent regions with prescribed phase delays, we generate locomotory gaits. These results advance a metamaterial paradigm for microscopic, continuum, compliant, programmable robots and pave the way to a broad spectrum of applications, including reconfigurable micromachines, tunable optical metasurfaces and miniaturized biomedical devices.

Abstract:3D structures that incorporate high-performance electronic materials and allow for remote, on-demand 3D shape reconfiguration are of interest for applications that range from ingestible medical devices and microrobotics to tunable optoelectronics. Here, materials and design approaches are introduced for assembly of such systems via controlled mechanical buckling of 2D precursors built on shape-memory polymer (SMP) substrates. The temporary shape fixing and recovery of SMPs, governed by thermomechanical loading, provide deterministic control over the assembly and reconfiguration processes, including a range of mechanical manipulations facilitated by the elastic and highly stretchable properties of the materials. Experimental demonstrations include 3D mesostructures of various geometries and length scales, as well as 3D aquatic platforms that can change trajectories and release small objects on demand. The results create many opportunities for advanced, programmable 3D microsystem technologies.

Abstract:Shape-morphing capabilities are crucial for enabling multifunctionality in both biological and artificial systems. Various strategies for shape morphing have been proposed for applications in metamaterials and robotics. However, few of these approaches have achieved the ability to seamlessly transform into a multitude of volumetric shapes post-fabrication using a relatively simple actuation and control mechanism. Taking inspiration from thick origami and hierarchies in nature, we present a hierarchical construction method based on polyhedrons to create an extensive library of compact origami metastructures. We show that a single hierarchical origami structure can autonomously adapt to over 103 versatile architectural configurations, achieved with the utilization of fewer than 3 actuation degrees of freedom and employing simple transition kinematics. We uncover the fundamental principles governing theses shape transformation through theoretical models. Furthermore, we also demonstrate the wide-ranging potential applications of these transformable hierarchical structures. These include their uses as untethered and autonomous robotic transformers capable of various gait-shifting and multidirectional locomotion, as well as rapidly self-deployable and self-reconfigurable architecture, exemplifying its scalability up to the meter scale. Lastly, we introduce the concept of multitask reconfigurable and deployable space robots and habitats, showcasing the adaptability and versatility of these metastructures.

Abstract:Capabilities for controlled formation of sophisticated 3D micro/nanostructures in advanced materials have foundational implications across a broad range of fields. Recently developed methods use stress release in prestrained elastomeric substrates as a driving force for assembling 3D structures and functional microdevices from 2D precursors. A limitation of this approach is that releasing these structures from their substrate returns them to their original 2D layouts due to the elastic recovery of the constituent materials. Here, a concept in which shape memory polymers serve as a means to achieve freestanding 3D architectures from the same basic approach is introduced, with demonstrated ability to realize lateral dimensions, characteristic feature sizes, and thicknesses as small as ≈500, 10, and 5 µm simultaneously, and the potential to scale to much larger or smaller dimensions. Wireless electronic devices illustrate the capacity to integrate other materials and functional components into these 3D frameworks. Quantitative mechanics modeling and experimental measurements illustrate not only shape fixation but also capabilities that allow for structure recovery and shape programmability, as a form of 4D structural control. These ideas provide opportunities in fields ranging from micro-electromechanical systems and microrobotics, to smart intravascular stents, tissue scaffolds, and many others.

Abstract:Kirigami can induce shape transformations in planar and nonplanar geometry by rational cut design, significantly increasing the kinematics degree of freedom. Here, we exploit kirigami metamaterials and hard-magnetic actuation to design untethered soft robots. The kirigami soft robot, consisting of slit perforated kirigami patterns with embedded hard-magnetic disks in each facet, exhibits modularity, scalability, and programmable locomotion. By varying the magnetization arrays, the kirigami soft robots show diverse static and dynamic behaviors, which are systematically studied by experiments and FEM. We demonstrate multi-module soft robots with programmable locomotion, where directional locomotion is generated by a synergistic effect and circular motion is realized by the asymmetric pattern. Active and passive environmental adaptabilities and multifunctionalities are shown, including passing over gaps, active obstacle avoidance, moving over various substrates, carrying loads, remote circuit switches, and amphibious motions by bistability. This work paves the way to design untethered soft robots with programmable motions and multifunctionalities.

Abstract:Biological organisms such as the octopus can reconfigure their shape and properties to perform diverse tasks. However, soft machines struggle to achieve complex configurations, morph into shape to support loads, and go between multiple states reversibly. Here, we introduce a multifunctional shape-morphing material with reversible and rapid polymorphic reconfigurability. We couple elastomeric kirigami with an unconventional reversible plasticity mechanism in metal alloys to rapidly ( < 0.1 seconds) morph flat sheets into complex, load-bearing shapes, with reversibility and self-healing through phase change. This kirigami composite overcomes trade-offs in deformability and load-bearing capacity and eliminates power requirements to sustain reconfigured shapes. We demonstrate this material through integration with onboard control, motors, and power to create a soft robotic morphing drone, which autonomously transforms from a ground to air vehicle and an underwater morphing machine, which can be reversibly deployed to collect cargo.

Abstract:Shape-morphing structures have the capability to transform from one state to another, making them highly valuable in engineering applications. In this study, it is propose a two-stage shape-morphing framework inspired by kirigami structures to design structures that can deploy from a compacted state to a prescribed state under certain mechanical stimuli -- although the framework may also be extended to accommodate various physical fields, such as magnetic, thermal, and electric fields. The framework establishes a connection between the geometry and mechanics of kirigami structures. The proposed approach combines the finite element analysis (FEA), genetic algorithm (GA), and an analytical energy-based model to obtain kirigami designs with robustness and efficiency.

Abstract:Mechanical metamaterials exhibit unusual properties through the shape and movement of their engineered subunits. This work presents a new investigation of the Poisson’s ratios of a family of cellular metamaterials based on Kirigami design principles. Kirigami is the art of cutting and folding paper to obtain 3D shapes. This technique allows us to create cellular structures with engineered cuts and folds that produce large shape and volume changes and with extremely directional, tuneable mechanical properties. We demonstrate how to produce these structures from flat sheets of composite materials. By a combination of analytical models and numerical simulations we show how these Kirigami cellular metamaterials can change their deformation characteristics. We also demonstrate the potential of using these classes of mechanical metamaterials for shape change applications like morphing structures.

A Highly Multi-Stable Meta-Structure via Anisotropy for Large and Reversible Shape Transformation

Abstract:Shape transformation offers the possibility of realizing devices whose 3D shape can be altered to adapt to different environments. Many applications would profit from reversible and actively controllable shape transformation together with a self-locking capability. Solutions that combine such properties are rare. Here, a novel class of meta-structures that can tackle this challenge is presented thanks to multi-stability. Results demonstrate that the multi-stability of the meta-structure is strictly tied to the use of highly anisotropic materials. The design rules that enable large-shape transformation, programmability, and self-locking are derived, and it is proven that the shapes can be actively controlled and harnessed to realize inchworm-inspired locomotion by strategically actuating the meta-structure. This study provides routes toward novel shape adaptive lightweight structures where a metamaterial-inspired assembly of anisotropic components leads to an unforeseen combination of properties, with potential applications in reconfigurable space structures, building facades, antennas, lenses, and soft robots.

Abstract:Shape morphing and the possibility of having control over mechanical properties via designed deformations have attracted a lot of attention in the materials community and led to a variety of applications with an emphasis on the space industry. However, current materials normally do not allow to have a full control over the deformation pattern and often fail to replicate such behavior at low scales which is essential in flexible electronics. Thus, in this paper, novel 2D and 3D microscopic hierarchical mechanical metamaterials using mutually-competing substructures within the system that are capable of exhibiting a broad range of the highly unusual auxetic behavior are proposed. Using experiments (3D microprinted polymers) supported by computer simulations, it is shown that such ability can be controlled through geometric design parameters. Finally it is demonstrated that the considered structure can form a composite capable of shape morphing allowing it to deform to a predefined shape.

Multi-step self-guided pathways for shape-changing metamaterials

Abstract:Multi-step pathways, constituted of a sequence of reconfigurations, are central to a wide variety of natural and man-made systems. Such pathways autonomously execute in self-guided processes such as protein folding and self-assembly, but require external control in macroscopic mechanical systems, provided by, e.g., actuators in robotics or manual folding in origami. Here we introduce shape-changing mechanical metamaterials, that exhibit self-guided multi-step pathways in response to global uniform compression. Their design combines strongly nonlinear mechanical elements with a multimodal architecture that allows for a sequence of topological reconfigurations, i.e., modifications of the topology caused by the formation of internal self-contacts. We realized such metamaterials by digital manufacturing, and show that the pathway and final configuration can be controlled by rational design of the nonlinear mechanical elements. We furthermore demonstrate that self-contacts suppress pathway errors. Finally, we demonstrate how hierarchical architectures allow to extend the number of distinct reconfiguration steps. Our work establishes general principles for designing mechanical pathways, opening new avenues for self-folding media, pluripotent materials, and pliable devices in, e.g., stretchable electronics and soft robotics.

Abstract:Origami-inspired metamorphous structures can adjust their shapes and mechanical behaviors according to operational requirements. However, they are typically composed of nonrigid origami, where required facet deformation complicates actuation and makes them highly material dependent. In this study, we present a type of origami metamorphous structure composed of modular bistable units, each of which is a rigid origami. The elasticity within the origami creases and switching of mountain and valley crease lines enable it to have bistability. The resultant metamorphous structure has multistability, allowing it to switch among multifarious configurations with programmable profiles. This concept was validated by potential energy analysis and experiments. Using this concept, we developed a robotic limb capable of both lifting and gripping through configuration changes. Furthermore, we used the origami units to construct a metamaterial whose properties could change with the variation of configurations. These examples demonstrate the concept's remarkable versatility and potential for many applications.

Abstract:Abstract Dynamic shape-morphing soft materials systems are ubiquitous in living organisms; they are also of rapidly increasing relevance to emerging technologies in soft machines1–4, flexible electronics5–7, and smart medicines8,9. Soft matter equipped with responsive components can switch between designed shapes or structures, but cannot support the types of dynamic morphing capabilities needed to reproduce natural, continuous processes of interest for many applications10–27. Challenges lie in the development of schemes to reprogram target shapes post fabrication, especially when complexities associated with the operating physics and disturbances from the environment can prohibit the use of deterministic theoretical models to guide inverse design and control strategies3,28–32. Here, we present a mechanical metasurface constructed from a matrix of filamentary metal traces, driven by reprogrammable, distributed Lorentz forces that follow from passage of electrical currents in the presence of a static magnetic field. The resulting system demonstrates complex, dynamic morphing capabilities with response times within 0.1 s. Implementing an in-situ stereo-imaging feedback strategy with a digitally controlled actuation scheme guided by an optimization algorithm, yields surfaces that can self-evolve into a wide range of 3-dimensional (3D) target shapes with high precision, including an ability to morph against extrinsic or intrinsic perturbations. These concepts support a data-driven approach to the design of dynamic, soft matter, with many unique characteristics.

Abstract:<p>Programmable actuation of metastructures with predesigned geometrical configurations has recently drawn significant attention in many applications, such as smart structures, medical devices, soft robotics, prosthetics, and wearable devices. Despite remarkable progress in this field, achieving wireless miniaturized reconfigurable metastructures remains a challenge due to the difficult nature of the fabrication and actuation processes at the micrometer scale. Herein, microscale thermo‐responsive reconfigurable metasurfaces using stimuli‐responsive liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) is fabricated as an artificial muscle for reconfiguring the 2D microscale kirigami structures. Such structures are fabricated via two‐photon polymerization with sub‐micrometer precision. Through rationally designed experiments guided by simulations, the optimal formulation of the LCE artificial muscle is explored and the relationship between shape transformation behaviors and geometrical parameters of the kirigami structures is build. As a proof of concept demonstration, the constructs for temperature‐dependent switching and information encryption is applied. Such reconfigurable kirigami metastructures have significant potential for boosting the fundamental small‐scale metastructure research and the design and fabrication of wireless functional devices, wearables, and soft robots at the microscale as well.</p>

Metamorphs: Bistable Planar Structures

Abstract:Extreme deformation can drastically morph a structure from one structural form into another. Programming such deformation properties into the structure is often challenging and in many cases an impossible task. The morphed forms do not hold and usually relapse to the original form, where the structure is in its lowest energy state. For example, a stick, when bent, resists its bent form and tends to go back to its initial straight form, where it holds the least amount of potential energy. In this project, we present a computational design method which can create fabricable planar structure that can morph into two different bistable forms. Once the user provides the initial desired forms, the method automatically creates support structures (internal springs), such that, the structure can not only morph, but also hold the respective forms under external force application. We achieve this through an iterative nonlinear optimization strategy for shaping the potential energy of the structure in the two forms simultaneously. Our approach guarantees first and second-order stability with respect to the potential energy of the bistable structure.

Abstract:Choreographing the adaptive shapes of patterned surfaces to exhibit designable mechanical interactions with their environment remains an intricate challenge. Here, we introduce a novel category of strain‐engineered dynamic‐shape materials, empowering diverse multi‐dimensional shape modulations that are combined to form fine‐grained adaptive microarchitectures. Using micro‐origami tessellation technology, heterogeneous materials are provided with strategic creases featuring stimuli‐responsive micro‐hinges that morph precisely upon chemical and electrical cues. Freestanding multifaceted foldable packages, auxetic mesosurfaces, and morphable cages are three of the forms demonstrated herein of these complex 4‐dimensional (4D) metamaterials. These systems are integrated in dual proof‐of‐concept bioelectronic demonstrations: a soft foldable supercapacitor enhancing its power density (ca. 108 mW/cm2), and a bio‐adaptive device with dynamic shape that may enable novel smart‐implant technologies. This work demonstrates that intelligent material systems are now ready to support ultra‐flexible 4D microelectronics, which can impart autonomy to devices culminating in the tangible realization of microelectronic morphogenesis.
