Abstract:The present work illustrates the structural setting in the Hamadat core complex, which located in the Midyan terrane. It is essential to understand deformational processes and products at different scales, which depend on the calculation of finite strain. To assess the tectonic development and structures in the Hamadat core complex, we use field investigation, finite strain analysis and microstructural examination. The Hamadat core complex employed the Rf/φ and Fry techniques for feldspar and mafic grains with 24 collected samples for gneisses, metavolcano-sedimentary rocks from both the Zaam and Baydah groups, deformed granodiorite for Jar-Salajah intrusion and Qazzaz granite. According to finite-strain data, the various rock units have moderate to high degree of deformation, and the axial ratios for XZ section vary from 1.80 to 4.50 for the Rf/φ technique and from 2.10 to 7.40 for the Fry technique. It concluded that the shortening axes display the subvertical related to the subhorizontal foliation. The strain data have the same main-phase foliation and similar deformation behavior. Finite strain acquired through high pressure metamorphism in this instance suggested that the contacts of nappe developed through the buildup of ductile strains. Also, during thrusting and intrusions throughout the deformation process, a building of brittle to ductile deformation was mostly caused by pure shearing in the study area.

Abstract:The Atalla Shear Zone (ASZ) is one of the crucial megashears which are geometrically and kinematically akin to the Najd-Shear Corridor in the central Eastern Desert of Egypt. The Landsat-8 and ASTER-based mapping techniques integrated with extensive petrographic and structural-field investigations enhanced the geological and structural maps of the study area. The Neoproterozoic basement complex in the study area discriminated into ditinctive rock suites: Meatiq Group, ophiolitic melange, arc assemblage, syn- to late-tectonic granitoids, Dokhan Volcanics, Hammamat Sediments, post-Hammamat Felsites and post-tectonic granitoids. The true color composites (TCC) (4 3 2 for Landsat-8; 3 2 1 for ASTER), false color composites (FCC) (1 6 4, 1 6 7 and 7 5 1 for Landsat-8; 5 4 3 and 9 6 4 for ASTER), principal component analysis (PCA) (1 2 3, 3 2 1 and 6 4 2 for Landsat-8; 1 2 3 and 5 4 2 for ASTER), minimum noise fraction (MNF) (1 2 3 and 3 5 1 for Landsat-8; 1 2 4 and 3 2 1 for ASTER) and band ratios (BR) (6/2, 6/7, 6/5*4/3 and 7/6, 7/5, 5/3 for Landsat-8; 2/6, 7/5, 7/6 and 4/7, 3/4, 2/1 for ASTER besides the new created ratio 2/6, 7/5, 7/6) are the best combinations that demonstrate efficiency in discrimination of lithologic contacts and structural elements, using the spectral signature of different rock units. Moreover, the BR b7/b5, b5/b7 and b6/b4 of grey scale for Landsat-8 are used as a tool for mineral detection along with the spectral indices created to detect muscovite (b7/b6), ferrous silicates b5/b4 (biotite, chlorite and amphiboles) and ferrous iron b5/b3 (mafic minerals). The automatic lineament extraction utilizing the SRTM data advocated the role of NE- to NNE-trending lineaments in the tectonic framework of the study area. The structural fabric of the study area is evaluated in three main structural domains: Meatiq (MD), Atalla Shear Zone (ASZD) and Wadi Hammamat (WHD). The pronounced structural implication is the transposition of NE-oriented fabric in MD into NW-oriented penetrative shear-related fabric, fully in the ASZD and partly in WHD. The combination of transcurrent shearing with ENE-directed shortening along the ASZ that was resulted in noteworthy transpressive structures resemble in many respects those observed in the Ajjaj Shear Belt in Western Arabia. Among these structures are shear zone-related folds, imbricated thrust sheets, antiformal stacks and thrust duplexes. The deformation history of the investigated area proposed four phases of deformation (D1–D4). It depicts a long lasted deformational event covering the main accretion-collision phases concurrent with the E-W assembly of Gondwana, and the subsequent post-collision Najd-related transpressional phase which resulted in several major left-lateral transcurrent shear zones along with the exhumation of gneissic core complexes in the Arabian-Nubian Shield.

Abstract:In the central north of Saudi Arabia, outcrop samples from the Cretaceous bauxite profile deposits in the Az Zabirah area were subjected to a comprehensive evaluation aimed at investigating their petrographical and geochemical characteristics using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with Energy dispersive (EDS) analysis, and X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF) analysis. These bauxite deposits in the Az Zabirah area comprises of three main zones: the South zone, the Central zone, and the North zone. Petrologically, the bauxite samples predominantly consist of oolitic to pisolitic grains that are bound together by a matrix comprising bauxitic materials, iron oxides, calcite, and/or kaolinite. Mineralogical investigations indicate that the primary mineral composition of the bauxite includes gibbsite, boehmite, diaspore (kaolinite), hematite, quartz, and calcite. XRF showed that the dominant chemical components of the bauxite samples are Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , and Fe 2 O 3 . When considering the collective data from the rare earth elements (REEs) analysis (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) and chemical weathering indices such as the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA), Chemical Index of Weathering (CIW), and Weathering Index of Parker (WIP), it becomes evident that the Az Zabirah South Zone bauxite laterite profile at Al Ba'itha mine was formed under the influence of significant and persistent weathering conditions. The findings and methods used in this study are considered beneficial and valuable as they support mineral exploration in arid and semi-arid environments.

Abstract:Saudi Neom City is being constructed as an urban mega-project in the northwestern part of the Arabian plate at the southeastern part of the NNE-oriented sinistral Dead Sea continental transform fault that links the NNW-oriented Red Sea Rift to the Zagros collision through the NE-oriented sinistral East Anatolian Fault. The present study aims to detect and analyze the different structural elements in the western Neom city. It also attempts to provide valuable data to help decision-makers for better achievement of such vital projects. From field investigation, the study area mainly comprises Neogene sedimentary sequence and exhibits a complex structural architecture represented by extensional- and wrench-style deformations. Different fault orientations (NNW–SSE striking extensional faults, WNW–ESE and ENE–WSW striking oblique-slip faults, and NNE–SSW and NNW–SSE striking strike-slip faults) dissect the western Neom area. Individual NNW-oriented Red Sea Rift-related extensional faults and fault blocks are antithetically tilted to the northeast. The sinistral movement onset along the Dead Sea Transform Fault postdates the Lower Miocene Burqan Formation deposition. Furthermore, the sinistral strike-slip regime of the western Neom area involves extensional structures, including normal faults, contractional structures (folds and reverse faults), and structures representing horizontal shear on near-vertical planes. NNW-oriented negative flower structures and forced folding occur along a synthetic NNW-oriented sinistral strike-slip fault set. Contractional structures are expressed by sets of NE-oriented left-handed en echelon-arranged folds in the Middle Miocene deposits. A proposed strain ellipse reveals these structures are associated with the NNE-oriented sinistral Dead Sea Transform Fault. The complexity of the structural architecture of the western Neom area can be attributed to its geologic setting under the influence of the Red Sea extensional rifting followed by the tectonic activity along the Dead Sea transform faulting. It is recommended that the structural attributes investigated, especially the geographic distribution of brittle structures (faults and fractures), be considered during the construction of Neom City.

Abstract:The ophiolitic mélange and granitic intrusions along the Qift ‒ Quseir transect in the Central Eastern Desert (CED) of Egypt are parts of the Egyptian Nubian Shield (ENS), which is the northern segment of the East African Orogeny (EAO). The Arabian-Nubian Shield (ANS) is the longest Neoproterozoic belt on Earth, and it was formed during the East and West Gondwanaland collisions within the framework of the EAO. The ANS basement rocks were developed during three distinct phases of magmatic activity: the island arc and syn-collisional phases, identifying a compressional tectonic regime, and a post-collisional phase that identifies changing the tectonic regime into an extensional type. The geochronological assessment of these magmatic activities is essential for understanding the regional geology and tectonic development of the ANS. In our study, we dated different rock units along the Qift ‒ Quseir transect and revealed ages ranging from the Late Tonian (820 ± 8 Ma) to the Late Ediacaran (563 ± 4 Ma). These ages were associated with three different magmatic pulses: (1) a seafloor spreading and island arc phase (ophiolite and related rocks), represented by sample QQ05, which was dated from 820 ± 8 Ma; (2) a syn-collisional phase, represented by samples QQ08 and QQ10, dated from 733 ± 10 Ma and 729 ± 10 Ma, respectively; and (3) a post-collisional phase, represented by all the other samples, dated from the Ediacaran at 603 ± 9 Ma to 563 ± 5 Ma. These results showed that the post-collisional phase was dominant, especially in terms of the alkali-feldspar granites, relative to ophiolitic rocks, and the syn-collisional granites in the CED. Initiation of the Dokhan Volcanic eruptions at 639 ± 2 Ma gave us the date of the compressional-to-extensional tectonic transition setting, and the post-collisional tensional regime was activated at 603 ± 9 Ma. Additionally, we identified evidence of local magmatic sources by dating 11 grains of Paleo- to Meso-Proterozoic xenocrysts with ages ranging from 1876 ± 18 to 1070 ± 13 Ma (i.e., components of the pre-Arabian-Nubian Shield).

Abstract:Zircon from Shuanghe UHP eclogite, Southern Dabieshan was analysed for observation and determination of cathodoluminscence image, Raman spectrometer, SIMS U-Pb and oxygen isotopes. Most zircon grains show core-mantle-ring structure with different U, Th and Pb concentrations, Th/U ratios, 206Pb/238U ages and δ18O values. The rings show characteristics of metamorphic zircon structure and chemical compositions. Whereas the cores show transition from magmatic to metamorphic zircon. Most of the 17 measured SIMS ages are discordant, and the discordia line obtained from 14 positive discordant data points yield their lower and upper intercept ages of 2489 ± 25Ma and 248 ± 16Ma, respectively. The upper intercept age represents the protolith formation and lower intercept represents the time of re-crystallization of magmatic zircon and metamorphic zircon overgrowth during prograde to peak UHP metamorphism. The genesis of metamorphic zircon of Dabieshan is quite complicated. It could be new zircon growth of either forming an independent grain or as a ring of protoloth zircon, and also a product of re-crystallization of magmatic zircon under solid state and/or fluid existence. Different degree of re-crystallization is a major physico-chemical phenomenon happened for protolith zircon of Shuanghe eclogite during the whole UHP stage. It caused reduce of U, Th, Pb content and Th/U ratio, and removing of magmatic oscillatory zoning.
Metamorphism of Ladakh Island Arc terrain in the Himalayan region: implications from sulfide geochemistry and petrography

Abstract:The Juji Nala massive sulfide deposit, hosted in the Chota Pani meta-volcanic rocks of the Kohistan-Ladakh Arc, northern Pakistan, has experienced textural and compositional changes due to metamorphism. This study integrates detailed petrographic and mineral chemical investigations to understand the formation of the original deposit and its subsequent modification due to metamorphism and deformation. The study reveals three distinct types of pyrites: a fine-grained disseminated type (Py1), an anhedral type with cataclastic texture and abundant inclusions of other minerals (Py2a), and an anhedral to euhedral type with scarce micro-inclusions (Py2b). The chalcopyrite is fine to medium-grained and forms intergrowth textures with pyrrhotite, Py2a, and Py2b. Marcasite-pyrite aggregates have replaced pyrrhotite and pyrite, whereas chalcopyrite has remained unaffected. Py1 shows a high Co/Ni ratio (> 1) and low Ni content (avg = 76 ppm), suggesting its crystallization from felsic magma-derived ore-forming fluids at temperatures between 366 and 397 °C. The Juji Nala ores have undergone at least four distinct phases of metamorphism, including the cataclastic Py2a formed under greenschist metamorphism, contact metamorphism (upper greenschist to lower amphibolite facies) due to igneous intrusion, thermal annealing, and late-stage cataclasis and retrograde metamorphism during exhumation. In contrast to pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite display ductility, and this explains why the pre-metamorphic features of these two minerals were obliterated during metamorphism. This study provides insights into the formation and modification of the Juji Nala deposit, highlighting the importance of considering metamorphic changes in mineral deposits.

Abstract:The magmatic complex along the Marsa Alam-Idfu transect, Central-Eastern Desert of Egypt, represents the northern segment of the Arabian–Nubian Shield (ANS), which developed within the framework of the East African Orogen. The basement rocks of the Arabian-Nubian Shield have been developed through three distinct phases of magmatic activity: the island-arc, the syn-orogenic, and the post-orogenic phases. Transitioning of the magmatic phases from the syn-orogenic to the post-orogenic, identifies changing the tectonic regime from a compressional to an extensional setting. The scarcity of comprehensive regional geochronological data that rely on precise isochron methods, such as the zircon U-Pb technique, could limit the comprehensive understanding of this region's geological and tectonic history. That would raise a number of uncertainties ranging from the timing of the different magmatic activities and timing of changes in the tectonic regime to the existence of the pre-Pan-African crust in the CED. Our study provides new insights into the aforementioned uncertainties through zircon U-Pb dating of different rock units along the Marsa Alam-Idfu transect, CED, Egypt. The resulting ages ranged from 729 ± 3 Ma to 570 ± 2 Ma, constraining the temporal evolution of the ANS in the studied region into (1) the island-arc phase, represented by a metamorphic sample with an age of 729 ± 3 Ma. (2) the syn-orogenic phase, represented by calc-alkaline and alkaline granitic samples with ages ranging from 699 ± 4 Ma to 646 ± 2 Ma. These two phases indicate initiation of the compressional subduction regime in the CED since 729 ± 3 Ma and being dominated till 646 ± 2 Ma. (3) the post-orogenic phase, represented by metavolcanics, volcanic rocks, and alkaline plutonic samples with ages ranging from 623 ± 3 Ma to 570 ± 2 Ma. This phase suggests dominance of the compressional-to-extensional tectonic transition setting from 623 ± 3 Ma to 600 ± 1 Ma along with the Dokhan volcanism and activation of post-collision tensional regime activated at 582 ± 3 Ma. Our findings discourage the proposed dominance of the island-arc and syn-orogenic phases in the CED and the classical restriction of older magmatic activity to calc-alkaline granitic rocks and younger magmatic activity to alkaline granitic rocks. Additionally, we identified evidence of local magmatic sources by dating five grains with Mesoproterozoic (pre-Arabian–Nubian Shield) xenocrysts with ages ranging from 1549 ± 4 to 1095 ± 25 Ma.

U-Pb Zircon dating and Geochemistry of the rocks at Wadhrai body, Nagar Parkar Igneous Complex, Sindh, Pakistan

Abstract:U-Pb zircon data for the rocks from Wadhrai body belonging to the Nagar Parkar igneous complex was acquired and processed for age dating using 207U-235Pb and 206U-238Pb isotopes. Isotopic investigations of two samples (Adamelite and Pink Granite) for U-Pb were performed using LA-ICP-MS (ArF Excimer laser ablation system with Agilent 7700x) available at CAS Key Laboratory of Crust-Mantle Materials and Environments, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei. The processed results with 95% confidence level revealed the age of 767±12 for Adamelite and 803±7.8 Ma for Pink Granite. A total of nine samples were processed for Major, Trace, and REE elements, the results suggest the within plate granite origin for the granitic rocks, plagioclase fractionation took place as is suggested by elemental behavior in the form of Eu negative anomaly. The REE element behavior in basic magma composition rocks suggest the assimilation of crust materials during their formation. These results suggest the bimodal origin for the rocks exposed in the area, and suggest Nagar Parkar igneous exposures as the extensions of Malani Igneous Suite of Rajasthan craton.

Abstract:Lately, Saudi Arabia has been developing its mineral exploration. However, comprehensive studies of the collected data are not accessible. Thus, the purpose of this research is to identify and map the hydrothermal alteration zones and structural lineaments that regulate the mineral occurrences in the Nuqrah region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia using remote sensing and aeromagnetic data. To achieve the desired goal of the study, ASTER remote sensing data were employed, and they were processed in several ways, including principal component analysis, band ratio, and false color composites to reveal the zones of alteration and structure lineaments. In addition, aeromagnetic data was employed to map the lineaments controlling the mineralization. These datasets were integrated using GIS tools to generate a new mineralization potential map of the Nuqrah area, which was classified into three classes: low, moderate, and high probability mineralization. The results showed thirteen intriguing anomalies (high potential mineralization) dispersed over the research area to be prospected. Additionally, techniques such as residual, regional, first vertical derivative, and tilt derivative were utilized to detect the potential mineral-related geologic structures. The results were validated by plotting known mineralization sites on our maps. Six significant faulting trends have been found, according to the lineament map and rose diagrams from remote sensing: NE–SW, WNW–ESE, N–S, ENE–WSW, NNE–SSW, NW–SE, and E–W. The research region is most affected by the NW–SE, ENE–WSW, E–W, and N–S trends, which are organized in decreasing order of magnitude, according to the rose diagram of the aeromagnetic maps. The applied approach can be employed to map potential mineral deposits in Saudi Arabia and similar zones around the globe.

Structural and metamorphic evolution of the southern Sanandaj-Sirjan zone, southern Iran

Abstract:The southern Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone (SSZ) forms the core of the Zagros orogen and consists of a stack of four major tectonic units, all of which were thrust southwestward over the Neyriz ophiolites. Precambrian and early Paleozoic rocks were affected by high-grade metamorphism, whilst the late Paleozoic (Carboniferous and Permian) and Mesozoic rocks are of low grade to unmetamorphosed. Geothermobarometric results indicate that the investigated area experienced peak temperature–pressure conditions of ~ 650 °C and 8–9 kbar, before being partly overprinted by greenschist facies conditions. We identified two main deformational phases (D2, D3) and some relics of an older one (D1) in the southern SSZ. D1 is inferred based on local evidence of tight D2 folds that fold a pre-existing schistosity (S1), associated with prograde- and peak metamorphism. D2 shows large-scale, tight-to isoclinal F2 folds and a penetrative S2 foliation, forming the dominant foliation in our study area. The P–T path is clockwise and associated with a geothermal gradient of ~ 20 °C/km, suggesting a collision-related geodynamic setting, preceding D2, and possibly linked to an early stage of D1. D3 is characterized by open folds (F3) and thrusts developed after greenschist facies metamorphism. Based on the metamorphic grade and stratigraphic age of folded units, D2 is inferred to be Eo-Cimmerian, and D3 post-Cretaceous, coeval to the Zagros orogeny. Concerning the oldest phase (D1), for which only circumstantial structural evidence exists, we discuss whether its age is pre-Cimmerian, possibly Variscan, or Eo-Cimmerian as suggested in previous literature. This study uses metamorphic assemblages and structures of the southern SSZ, to retrace its geodynamic evolution, which started with burial associated with high-temperature metamorphism, followed by Eo-Cimmerian shortening, and finally terminated with additional shortening related to the Zagros collisional event.

Abstract:The tectonic evolution of the Arabian-Nubian Shield began with formation of intra-oceanic arcs followed by collisions between these in Tonian-Cryogenian time and culminated in Ediacaran continental collision to form Gondwana. We provide new insights into the middle stage of this tectonic evolution by focusing on two Neoproterozoic dike swarms of different age in northern Arabia. The 695–700 Ma Za'am dikes were emplaced about the time of collision between the Midyan and Hijaz terranes whereas the 635 Ma Bayda dikes were emplaced ∼ 60 million years after collision. These record a shift from relatively unfractionated 695 Ma arc-type magmas in the south to fractionated 635 Ma within-plate alkaline magmas in the north. Our results document mantle source and crustal evolution beneath the Midyan terrane during and after terrane accretion, revealing a tectono-magmatic transition from SSZ-type magmas accompanying arc collision to post-terrane accretion within-plate magmatism through Cryogenian time. In addition, our results confirm the potential of dike studies for reconstructing the tectono-magmatic-metallogenic evolution of orogens.

Abstract:New 1:50,000-scale geological mapping in the Zanskar Himalaya of NW India, covering 2,400 km2, is integrated with structural and petrographic analysis to document the evolution and key tectonometamorphic relationships within the Himalayan metamorphic core. The integrated dataset constrains the regional three-dimensional geology and relationships between lithostratigraphy, folds, faults, deformation fabrics, metamorphic isograds, and growth of porphyroblasts within the context of five main deformation phases. Following the initial collision of India and Asia, NW−SE-oriented deformation is recorded by D1 (greenschist-facies) fabrics and D2 (greenschist- to amphibolite-facies) fabrics. D2 represents the main tectonometamorphic deformation phase associated with crustal thickening and produced the dominant regional penetrative fabric through crenulation and transposition of D1 fabrics. Thrust-sense D2 fabrics were reactivated during D3 as the Greater Himalayan Sequence was exhumed along the normal-sense Zanskar Shear Zone, which is part of the South Tibetan Detachment System. D3 fabrics, associated with movement on the Zanskar Shear Zone, were temporally continuous with crenulation and mesoscale folding, recording progressive kilometer-scale backfolding and backthrusting toward the NE between the Greater Himalayan Sequence−Tethyan Himalayan Sequence and the adjacent Indus Suture Zone. Finally, D4 and D5 are recorded as kilometer-scale open folding of older planar and linear structures. The orientation of mineral isograd surfaces ranges from subparallel to oblique with respect to D2 planar structural elements. The growth of pelitic and metabasic peak metamorphic phases from greenschist to upper-amphibolite facies is synchronous with or postdates D2 fabrics. D3 fabrics wrap thermal peak porphyroblasts and realign linear mineral phases. Tectonic thinning adjacent to D3 normal faults is documented by reduced structural spacing of isograds and alignment of isograd surfaces parallel to the faults. D4 and D5 structures modify the trace of all regional metamorphic isograds. Collectively, these observations imply that the thermal peak of metamorphism was reached after the main phase of deformation (D2), and predated movement on the Zanskar Shear Zone (D3). The results document numerous classical elements of collisional orogenesis, including implied clockwise P-T paths, polyphase deformation, and a complete Barrovian metamorphic isograd sequence supplemented by complementary metabasic isograds. The Zanskar Himalaya, unlike other areas of the Himalayan metamorphic core, records metamorphic conditions primarily attained following substantial crustal thickening rather than during subsequent decompression and exhumation. The reduced expression and/or discontinuous nature of exhuming fault systems, which produces variable levels of crustal exposure, may account for this lateral heterogeneity across the mountain belt. Deciphering the complex kinematics of continental tectonics requires the integration of observations and data over large length scales and a range of structural levels.

Abstract:Al Taif area is located in the central western portion of the Arabian Shield, Saudi Arabia. The area was a part of a geosyncline, in which sediments were deposited, followed by granitic and dioritic intrusions. During the Hijaz orogeny (650–800 Ma), the area was subjected to a progressive regional metamorphism to lower amphibolite facies which produced chlorite schists and micaceous quartzofeldspathic schists. This metamorphism also affected the igneous rocks to produce gneissic granite and metadiorite. The metamorphism was followed by the intrusion of other granitic plutons (490–600 Ma). This work aimed to discriminate the lithologic rock units and structural framework of the study area in order to map the geology of Al Taif area. The study area was not subjected previously to detailed geological mapping using the modern image processing techniques. However, it was subjected only to reconnaissance geological mapping. The study area was geologically remapped in this work through image processing techniques of Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM)+ digital data and field verifications. The fusion between multispectral ETM+ data and panchromatic ETM+ band 8 produced a color composite fused image for the study area of scale 1:50,000. The fused image was delineated the main regional folds, faults, and fractures of the study area. It was also defined and recognized the chlorite schist and the intruded monzogranitic rocks. The processed Landsat ratio image and supervised classification map discriminated the most lithologic units of the study area. The results of this work produced detailed and accurate geological map of scale 1:50,000 for the investigated area.

Abstract:Zarijia metamorphic core complex in the northern part of Bayankala Mountain has the typical double-layer structure.The dome anticline of the Zarijia metamorphic core complex consists of tectonic schist,tectonic gneiss and phyllite and the middle of the core is Yanshanian monzonitic granite.The cover layer consists of the low metamorphic sand-slate.There are stripping faults between the core part and the cover layer,showing that there exists Mesoproterozoic basement below the Bayankala sedimentary basin,and providing a new genetic type for the Dachang gold mine.
Lithospheric structural dynamics and geothermal modeling of the Western Arabian Shield

Abstract:Understanding the dynamics of suturing and cratonisation and their implications are vital in estimating the link between the lithospheric mantle architecture and geothermal resources. We propose new interpretations of the Western Arabian Shield's geodynamic styles and geothermal anomalies. In this work, features of the crust and mantle were interpreted from geophysical modeling to unravel the structural dynamics between the Arabian Shield and the Red Sea rift, as well as the influence of these mechanisms on the uplift of the Cenozoic basalts. Estimates of the lower crust thermal properties were also achieved. Spectral properties of the potential field were used to define the Curie isotherm, heat fluxes, geothermal gradients, radiogenic heat production, Moho configuration, and lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary. Results show new structural styles, micro-sutures, and significant thermal anomalies. The defined geothermal patterns were inferred to be due to localized initiation of tectonic and asthenospheric disequilibrium during the rifting episodes within the Red Sea. Also, magma mixing is initiated by the northward migration of magma from the Afar plume towards the Western Arabian Shield which drives local mantle melts beneath the western Arabia, thereby providing the pressure field required for magma ascent. The ascendant magma flow provides the heating source of geothermal reservoirs within the Western Arabian Shield. However, there are indications that during the episodes of rifting within the Red Sea and/or ancient Pan-African activities, the mixing process may have been altered resulting in crustal thinning and creating pathways of ascendant magma flow along the MMN volcanic line. Integrating geophysical and geothermal models indicated new zones of suturing and extensional tectonics between the amalgamated terranes. The geodynamic interpretation shows a new redistribution of terranes and continuous compressional and transtentional movements within the Arabian Shield.

Abstract:The presence of the Yingba (Yinggete Bagemaode) metamorphic core complex (MCC) is confirmed near the Sino-Mongolian border in China. We report its structural evolution and the rheological features of ductile shear zones within this complex. Three deformations (Ds, Dm, and Db) since the Late Jurassic are identified. Ds is characterized by ductile structures that resulted from early NW-oriented, low-angle, extensional ductile shearing. Dm is associated with partial melting and magmatic diapirism, which accelerated the formation of the dome-like geometry of the Yingba MCC. Synchronously with or slightly subsequently to Ds and Dm, the Yingba MCC was subjected to brittle, extensional faulting (Db), which was accompanied by the exhumation of the lower crust and the formation of supracrustal basins. The ductile shearing (Ds) developed under greenschist-to amphibolite-facies metamorphic conditions (400 -650 degrees C), as indicated by microstructures in quartz and feldspar, quartz [c] axis fabrics, and two-feldspar geothermometry. The mean kinematic vorticity estimates of 48-62% show a pure shear-preferred flow during Ds. The Yingba MCC provides an excellent sample that recorded an intermediate to high temperature shearing, which also implies the widely extensional regime in northeastern Asia at that time. Abstract:This research article presents a comprehensive work on sedimentological study of the Yamama Formation in the Saudi Arabia, aiming to enhance understanding of its depositional environments, diagenetic evolution, and reservoir properties of the formation. Integrated field and petrographic studies are used to interpret microfacies, depositional environment and diagenetic history of the Yamama Formation near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Field investigations show that the formation is thin- to thick-bedded, massive to nodular limestone with small patches of shale and marl. Petrographic studies show four distinct microfacies, i.e., mudstone MF-I, wackestone MF-II, packstone MF-III, grainstone MF-IV. The microfacies and their associations represent homoclinal ramp depositional setting designated on the basis of the relative percentage of allochems and orthochems. The diagenetic history, which includes eogenetic, mesogenetic, and telogenetic stages, is discussed as follows: The eogenetic stage includes burrowing, micrtization, neomorphism, and drusy mosaic cementation; the mesogenetic stage includes compaction (mechanical and chemical) and dissolution. The telogenetic stage is evident from calcite-filled fracture veins crosscutting the rock unit. The reservoir properties are directly dependent on both depositional and diagenetic processes. The reservoir quality of the formation has been significantly reduced by the precipitation of different types of cements during the diagenetic processes, as observed in the detailed paragentic sequence; however, during the late stage, fracturing has enhanced the reservoir quality significantly during the late stage.
