Abstract:This study proposes a simple but effective finite element method to simulate complex 3D crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete. Cohesive interface elements, characterized by softening traction-separation constitutive laws, are embedded into initial meshes to model potential cracks. The method is implemented in connection with Abaqus. Various concrete structures under static and dynamic loadings were modeled with excellent results compared with experiments.

Abstract:The research methods of Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) are introduced and the parameters of cohesive zone model in ABAQUS software are calibrated based on the cohesive constitutive model determined by the fracture energy. Besides adopting exponential cohesive zone model, this paper applies a bilinear one to simulate the crack propagation of a simply supported single-edge notched concrete beams SE(B) (Mode I) and make comparisons with experimental result. Finally, the results represent effectiveness of the effective modulus and the special advantage in term of failure of fracture based on the cohesive zone model, which is of directly guiding significance for achieving a deep going understanding of crack propagation.

Abstract:Many phenomena of deformation and failure of brittle or quasi-brittle solids are closely related to interaction and propagation of stochastically distributed microcracks. In this paper, a numerical method is presented for calculating the effective elastic moduli and the tensile strength and for simulating the failure process of brittle specimens associated with microcracking damage. By introducing two criteria for microcrack growth and coalescence in terms of Griffith's energy release rate, the above numerical method is used here to simulate the coalescence process of microcracks that results in a fatal crack and the final rupture of a specimen.

Abstract:A numerical method is developed to simulate complex two-dimensional crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials considering random heterogeneous fracture properties. Potential cracks are represented by pre-inserted cohesive elements with tension and shear softening constitutive laws modelled by spatially-varying Weibull random fields. Monte Carlo simulations of a concrete specimen under uni-axial tension were carried out with extensive investigation of the effects of important numerical algorithms and material properties on numerical efficiency and stability, crack propagation processes and load-carrying capacities. It was found that the homogeneous model led to incorrect crack patterns and load–displacement curves with strong mesh-dependence, whereas the heterogeneous model predicted realistic, complicated fracture processes and load-carrying capacity of little mesh-dependence. Increasing the variance of the tensile strength random fields with increased heterogeneity led to reduction in the mean peak load and increase in the standard deviation. The developed method provides a simple but effective tool for assessment of structural reliability and calculation of characteristic material strength for structural design.
Finite Element Modelling of Complex 3D Static and Dynamic Crack Propagation by Embedding Cohesive Elements in Abaqus

Abstract:This study proposes an algorithm of embedding cohesive elements in Abaqus and develops the computer code to model 3D complex crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials in a relatively easy and efficient manner. The cohesive elements with softening traction-separation relations and damage initiation and evolution laws are embedded between solid elements in regions of interest in the initial mesh to model potential cracks. The initial mesh can consist of tetrahedrons, wedges, bricks or a mixture of these elements. Neither remeshing nor objective crack propagation criteria are needed. Four examples of concrete specimens, including a wedge-splitting test, a notched beam under torsion, a pull-out test of an anchored cylinder and a notched beam under impact, were modelled and analysed. The simulated crack propagation processes and load-displacement curves agreed well with test results or other numerical simulations for all the examples using initial meshes with reasonable densities. Making use of Abaqus’s rich pre/postprocessing functionalities and powerful standard/explicit solvers, the developed method offers a practical tool for engineering analysts to model complex 3D fracture problems.

Abstract:Fracture is a very common failure mode of the composite materials, which seriously affects the reliability and service-life of composite materials. Therefore, the study of the fracture behavior of the composite materials is of great significance and necessity, which demands an accurate and efficient numerical tool in general cases because of the complexity of the arising boundary-value or initial-boundary value problems. In this paper, a phase field model is adopted and applied for the numerical simulation of the crack nucleation and propagation in brittle linear elastic two-phase perforated/particulate composites under a quasi-static tensile loading. The phase field model can well describe the initiation, propagation and coalescence of the cracks without assuming the existence and the geometry of the initial cracks in advance. Its numerical implementation is realized within the framework of the finite element method (FEM). The accuracy and the efficiency of the present phase field model are verified by the available reference results in literature. In the numerical examples, we first study and discuss the influences of the hole/particle size on the crack propagation trajectory and the force–displacement curve. Then, the effects of the hole/particle shape on the crack initiation and propagation are investigated. Furthermore, numerical examples are presented and discussed to show the influences of the hole/particle location on the crack initiation and propagation characteristics. It will be demonstrated that the present phase field model is an efficient tool for the numerical simulation of the crack initiation and propagation problems in brittle two-phase composite materials, and the corresponding results may play an important role in predicting and preventing possible hazardous crack initiation and propagation in engineering applications.

Abstract:This paper summarises our recent efforts on finite element modelling of complex 2D and 3D fracture in quasi-brittle materials considering random heterogeneous fracture properties, using a simple yet effective method developed in associated with Abaqus. In this method, potential cracks are represented by pre-inserted cohesive elements with traction-separation softening constitutive laws modelled by spatially-varying Weibull random fields. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations of small-sized concrete specimens under uni-axial tension were carried out. It is found that the developed method is able to predict realistic 2D and 3D crack propagation processes and excellent load-displacement curves with little mesh-dependence. It provides a potentially powerful tool to assess reliability of existing structures against external loadings.

Abstract:Fully automatic finite element (FE) modelling of the fracture process in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete and rocks and ductile materials such as metals and alloys, is of great significance in assessing structural integrity and presents tremendous challenges to the engineering community. One challenge lies in the adoption of an objective and effective crack propagation criterion. This paper proposes a crack propagation criterion based on the principle of energy conservation and the cohesive zone model (CZM). The virtual crack extension technique is used to calculate the differential terms in the criterion. A fully-automatic discrete crack modelling methodology, integrating the developed criterion, the CZM to model the crack, a simple remeshing procedure to accommodate crack propagation, the J2 flow theory implemented within the incremental plasticity framework to model the ductile materials, and a local arc-length solver to the nonlinear equation system, is developed and implemented in an in-house program. Three examples, i.e., a plain concrete beam with a single shear crack, a reinforced concrete (RC) beam with multiple cracks and a compact-tension steel specimen, are simulated. Good agreement between numerical predictions and experimental data is found, which demonstrates the applicability of the criterion to both quasi-brittle and ductile materials.

Abstract:This paper presents an integrated numerical algorithm based on the nonlinear augmented finite element method (N-AFEM) to accurately simulate the arbitrary evolving strong discontinuities (cracks/slip lines) and failure behaviors in geotechnical structures. A novel nonlinear elemental augmentation and condensation scheme was first proposed within the N-AFEM framework, which allows the consideration of nonlinear coupled intra-element cracks without the need of additional nodes or nodal DoFs. Then a modified exponential cohesive zone model (CZM) that considers the coupling effects between tension/compression and shear at the fracture surface was proposed to describe the fracture process of geomaterials. Besides, a nonlinear yielding function based on the Mohr-Coulomb strength theory was introduced into the framework and serves as the fracture initiation criteria for geomaterials. Finally, several benchmark examples were simulated and the predicted results were compared with existing numerical or experimental data to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:In a recent publication (Yang et al., 2009. Monte Carlo simulation of complex cohesive fracture in random heterogeneous quasi-brittle materials. Int. J. Solids Struct. 46 (17) 3222–3234), we developed a finite element method capable of modelling complex two-dimensional (2D) crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials considering random heterogeneous fracture properties. The present study extends the method to model three-dimensional (3D) problems. First, 3D cohesive elements are inserted into the initial mesh of solid elements to model potential crack surfaces by a specially designed, flexible and efficient algorithm and corresponding computer program. The softening constitutive laws of the cohesive elements are modelled by spatially-varying 3D Weibull random fields. Monte Carlo simulations are then carried out to obtain statistical information of structural load-carrying capacity. A concrete cube under uniaxial tension was analysed as an example. It was found that as the 2D heterogeneous model, the 3D model predicted realistic, complicated fracture processes and load-carrying capacity of little mesh-dependence. Increasing heterogeneity in terms of the variance in the tensile strength random fields resulted in lower mean and higher standard deviation of peak loads. Due to constraint effects and larger areas of unsmooth, non-planar fracture surfaces, 3D modelling resulted in higher mean and lower standard deviation of peak loads than 2D modelling.

Abstract:A numerical scheme of micromechanics is presented by combining the effective stress field concept for estimating effective elastic moduli and Kachanov's method for calculating strong interaction of microcracks. Some applications of this method are illustrated, including: (1) calculation of the effective elastic moduli of microcracked solids, (2) determination of the strengths of brittle specimens under uniaxial tension or bending, and (3) simulation of the failure process associated with interaction and propagation of distributed microcracks. The size effects of these mechanical properties induced by stochastic microcrack distributions are examined.

Abstract:A novel meshless numerical method, called general particle dynamics (GPD), is proposed to simulate samples of rock-like brittle heterogeneous material containing four preexisting flaws under uniaxial compressive loads. Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the initiation, growth, and coalescence of cracks using a GPD code. An elasto-brittle damage model based on an extension of the Hoek–Brown strength criterion is applied to reflect crack initiation, growth, and coalescence and the macrofailure of the rock-like material. The preexisting flaws are simulated by empty particles. The particle is killed when its stresses satisfy the Hoek–Brown strength criterion, and the growth path of cracks is captured through the sequence of such damaged particles. A statistical approach is applied to model the heterogeneity of the rock-like material. It is found from the numerical results that samples containing four preexisting flaws may produce five types of cracks at or near the tips of preexisting flaws including wing, coplanar or quasi-coplanar secondary, oblique secondary, out-of-plane tensile, and out-of-plane shear cracks. Four coalescence modes are observed from the numerical results: tensile (T), compression (C), shear (S), and mixed tension/shear (TS). A higher load is required to induce crack coalescence in the shear mode (S) than the tensile (T) or mixed (TS) mode. It is concluded from the numerical results that crack coalescence occurs following the weakest coalescence path among all possible paths between any two flaws. The numerical results are in good agreement with reported experimental observations.

Abstract:This study develops an innovative numerical approach for simulating complex mesoscale fracture in concrete. In this approach, the concrete meso-structures are generated using a random aggre-gate generation and packing algorithm. Each aggregate is modelled by a single scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) based polygon with the boundary discretized only. The damage and fracture in the mortar is simulated by the continuous damage phase-field regularized cohe-sive zone model (PF-CZM), and the aggregate-mortar interfaces are modelled by zero-thickness cohesive interface elements (CIEs) with nonlinear softening separation-traction laws. This new approach thus takes full advantages of different methods, including the semi-analytical accuracy and high flexibility in mesh generation and transition of SBFEM, the mesh and length-scale in-dependence of PF-CZM, and the ease-of-use of CIEs in modelling discrete interfacial fracture. These advantages are demonstrated by successful simulations of a few 2D and 3D benchmark examples in mode-I and mixed-mode fracture.

Abstract:The deformation and failure behaviors of brittle or quasi-brittle solids are closely related to interaction and propagation of stochastically distributed microcracks. The influence of microcrack interaction and evolution on the mechanical properties of materials presents a problem of considerable interest, which has been extensively argued but has not been resolved as yet. In the present paper, a novel numerical method is used to calculate the effective elastic moduli and the tensile strength, and to simulate the failure process of brittle specimens containing numerous microcracks. The influences of some crack distribution parameters reflecting the non-uniform spatial concentration, size and orientation distributions are examined. The effective elastic moduli and the tensile strength of brittle materials exhibit different dependences on microcrack interaction. For example, two microcrack distributions that lead to the identical effective elastic moduli may cause a pronounced difference in the tensile strengths and failure behaviors of materials. By introducing two criteria for microcrack growth and coalescence in terms of Griffith’s energy release rate, the above numerical method is extended to simulate the coalescence process of microcracks that results in a fatal crack and the final rupture of a specimen.

Abstract:The extended finite element method (X-FEM) is a novel numerical methodology with a great potential for using in fracture mechanics and multi-fields coupling problems. The algorithm is discussed and a code is developed in this paper by using this method for simulating fracture in inhomogeneous materials. The maximum circumferential stress criterion and interaction integral are reviewed briefly. Several numerical examples are presented to prove the capability and efficiency of the algorithm. Numerical analyses of fracture in inhomogeneous materials give a legible description of the effect on cracks made by interfaces. Some numerical results are compared with the analytical solutions.

Abstract:The phase field method is a very effective method to simulate arbitrary crack propagation, branching, convergence and complex crack networks. However, most of the current phase-field models mainly focus on tensile fracture problems, which is not suitable for rock-like materials subjected to compression and shear loads. In this paper, we derive the driving force of phase field evolution based on Mohr–Coulomb criterion for rock and other materials with shear frictional characteristics and develop a three-dimensional explicit parallel phase field model. In spatial integration, the standard finite element method is used to discretize the displacement field and the phase field. For the time update, the explicit central difference scheme and the forward difference scheme are used to discretize the displacement field and the phase field respectively. These time integration methods are implemented in parallel, which can tackle the problem of the low computational efficiency of the phase field method to a certain extent. Then, three typical benchmark examples of dynamic crack propagation and branching are given to verify the correctness and efficiency of the explicit phase field model. At last, the failure processes of rock-like materials under quasi-static compression load are studied. The simulation results can well capture the compression-shear failure mode of rock-like materials.

Abstract:<p>A field-enriched finite element method is proposed in this paper to simulate the failure process of rocks. According to the different types of defects, the proposed method can select the appropriate failure criteria for voids and cracks. Field variables are used to characterize the crack location and to realize the influence of cracks on the physical field of the numerical model. The main features and the capability of the field-enriched finite element method to efficiently simulate the failure process of rocks with different defects are illustrated with some numerical examples. The results show that the field-enriched finite element method proposed in this paper can obtain the crack propagation path which is consistent with other numerical methods and experimental observations. Moreover, the numerical method proposed in this paper has the advantages of simple implementation process and higher computational efficiency and accuracy in some cases. Therefore, it is a promising numerical simulation method.</p>
