Abstract:<p>The amount of plastics released into the environment has been increasing dramatically. As the physical and chemical degradation of plastics results in the production of millimeter- and micrometer-sized plastic particles, their presence has been recognized as an environmental threat. Considerable efforts have been made to identify and quantify microplastics in ecosystems. Millimeter-sized plastic particles can be monitored visually, but confirmation of the type of plastic requires spectroscopic tools such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. These technologies have long been considered robust methods for the identification of diverse plastic materials, but are not suitable for the quantification of concentrations in the environment using conventional analytical tools. The accuracy of plastic identification also decreases as the size of the particles approaches the scale of a few micrometers. Here, up-to-date technical developments in the identification and quantification of microplastics using pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Pyro-GC/MS) are reviewed along with their advantages, disadvantages, and accompanying technical challenges.</p>

Abstract:Human exposure to microplastics contained in food has become a significant concern owing to the increasing accumulation of microplastics in the environment. In this paper, we summarize the presence of microplastics in food and the analytical methods used for isolation and identification of microplastics. Although a large number of studies on seafood such as fish and shellfish exist, estimating the overall human exposure to microplastics via food consumption is difficult owing to the lack of studies on other food items. Analytical methods still need to be optimized for appropriate recovery of microplastics in various food matrices, rendering a quantitative comparison of different studies challenging. In addition, microplastics could be added or removed from ingredients during processing or cooking. Thus, research on processed food is crucial to estimate the contribution of food to overall human microplastic consumption and to mitigate this exposure in the future.

Abstract:Plastic waste has become a major global issue, with over 390.7 million tons of plastic produced in 2021. Because of its durability, low recycling rates, poor waste management, and maritime use, a considerable portion of plastic waste ends up in aquatic environments. Photo-oxidation and other mechanisms degrade plastics into microplastics (MPs), which are particles smaller than 5 mm. MPs can spread through the aerial, terrestrial, and aquatic areas, and running waterways serve as conduits for MP transport across various ecosystems. MPs have been found at various levels of the food web, and animals can ingest, inhale, or absorb them through their skin. MPs pose a significant health risk to flora and fauna, including marine creatures and humans, due to their small size, diverse colors, high abundance, and ability to adsorb antibiotic-resistant pathogens, causing cytotoxicity, acute reactions, undesirable immunological responses, neurotoxicity, and DNA alteration. MPs have a negative economic impact on industries such as agriculture, fishing, tourism, etc. Detecting and quantifying the presence of MPs is therefore critical. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the various techniques and equipment used to detect and characterize MPs in aqueous environments. Identifying and educating the public about the primary sources of plastic pollution can help reduce the number of MPs in the environment.

Abstract:<p>At present plastic residues has become grave threat to the environment. Microplastics are plastic residues with a size <5 mm, due to their small size it is very difficult to remove them from water bodies, sediments and air with available techniques. Nanoplastics are different in size range as nanoplastics are smaller than 1 μm in size. This review is an attempt to gather an insight towards microplastic and its associated point of concerns. The review will highlight some of the methods appropriate for microplastics sampling and techniques for its identification in environmental samples. Some of the sampling methods include sieving, filtration, visual sorting, digestion, density separation. While, identification techniques in practice are SEM-EDS, FTIR, NIR, Raman, NMR spectroscopy, etc. Still there is a need and scope for development of more economical and portable techniques in this direction.</p>

Abstract:The persistence and prevalence of microplastics in the environment have raised concerns among scientists, the general public, and environmental regulatory agencies, and a large number of studies on microplastics in sediments have been published. We reviewed those studies and focused on understanding the spatial and temporal variations, biological effects, and analytic methods of microplastics in sediments. Microplastics are widely distributed in marine and freshwater sediments. The distribution of microplastics is mainly influenced by anthropogenic input and environmental processes that determine the transportation, transformation and accumulation. The appearance of microplastics in sedimentary records has been proposed as a stratigraphic marker for the onset of the Anthropocene Epoch. Our current understanding of biological effects of microplastics is based mainly on field research and laboratory-scale experiments using unrealistic concentration and limited forms of microplastics. Future studies should consider environmentally relevant concentration, the diverse composition and form of microplastics presenting in the natural environment. Density separation method for separation of microplastics in sediments is the most commonly used, and component identification by optical analysis (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectra, Raman spectra etc.) are important analytic methods. Yet the separation method remains to be standardized across laboratories. Other separation methods include electrostatics separation, organic solvent extraction and magnet separation. We recommend the combination of density separation, electrostatic separation and organic solvent separation to improve the separation efficiency of microplastics and to standardize the analytic process for sediment microplastics in future studies.

Abstract:Microplastics, the microscopic plastics, are fragments of any type of plastic that are being produced today as plastic waste originating from anthropogenic activities. Such microplastics are discharged into the environment, and they enter back into the human body through different means. The microplastics spread in the environment due to environmental factors and the inherent properties of microplastics, such as density, hydrophobicity, and recalcitrance, and then eventually enter the water environment. In this study, to better understand the behavior of microplastics in the water environment, an extensive literature review was conducted on the occurrence of microplastics in aquatic environments categorized by seawater, wastewater, and freshwater. We summarized the abundance and distribution of microplastics in the water environment and studied the environmental factors affecting them in detail. In addition, focusing on the sampling and pretreatment processes that can limit the analysis results of microplastics, we discussed in depth the sampling methods, density separation, and organic matter digestion methods for each water environment. Finally, the potential hazards posed by the behavior of aging microplastics, such as adsorption of pollutants or ingestion by aquatic organisms, due to exposure to the environment were also investigated.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have gained much attention in recent years because of their ubiquitous presence, which is the widely acknowledged threat to the environment. MPs can be <5 mm size, while NPs are <100 nm, and both can be detected in various forms and shapes in the environment to alleviate their harmful effects on aquatic species, soil organisms, birds, and humans. In efforts to address these issues, the present review discusses about sampling methods for water, sediments, and biota along with their merits and demerits. Various identification techniques such as FTIR, Raman, ToF-SIMS, MALDI TOF MS, and ICP-MS are critically discussed. The detrimental effects caused by MPs and NPs are discussed critically along with the efficient and cost-effective treatment processes including membrane technologies in order to remove plastics particles from various sources to mitigate their environmental pollution and risk assessment.
Review on invasion of microplastic in our ecosystem and implications

Abstract:Today the world is going through the "Plastic Age." Nowadays, it is difficult to find a commonly used convenient item that is nonplastic. Plastic production and consumption, thus, increased exponentially and plastic emerged as one of the major concerns for waste management. Recent studies confirmed a faster rate of plastic degradation than previously believed under various conditions (e.g. saltwater, UV, soil interaction) that microplastic has become a new type of health-hazardous pollution source. Much research has been conducted since the discovery of the "Pacific Garbage Patch," and the scope has expanded from marine to soil, groundwater, air, and food chain. This article underwent a substantial amount of literature review to verify the degree of microplastic pollution progression in major pillars of the environment (aqueous, terrestrial, airborne, bio-organism, and human). Multiple kinds of literature indicated a high possibility of vigorous interaction among the pillars that microplastic is not stationary at the point of contamination but travels across the nation (transboundary) and medium (transmedium). Thus, only the waste reduction policy (i.e. production and consumption reduction) would be effective through a single national or local effort, while pollution and contamination management require more of a collective, if not global, approach. For these characteristics, this article proposes two most urgently required actions to combat microplastic pollution: (a) global acknowledgement of microplastic as transboundary and transmedium pollution source that require international collective action and (b) standardization of microplastic related research including basic definition and experimental specification to secure global comparativeness among data analysis. Without resolving these two issues, it could be very difficult to obtain an accurate global status mapping of microplastic pollution to design effective and efficient global microplastic pollution management policies.

Abstract:Plastics are in high demand for various uses worldwide because of their low cost, versatility, lightweight, low density, flexibility, high strength, and durability. An increase in single-use plastics and ineffective solid waste disposal and recycling strategies have resulted in a global microplastic (MP) pollution epidemic, with negative implications for the ecosystem and public health safety. Analytical methods, including thermogravimetry and chromatography, have been developed to detect MPs. Nevertheless, molecular spectroscopy methods such as Near Infrared (NIR), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Raman, and fluorescence spectroscopy for MP analysis have gained attention in recent years due to their rapidity, low cost, accuracy, and portability of spectrometers. This review article provides in-depth coverage of the survey of current literature on the challenges, toxicity, sample pretreatment, and spectroscopic (Fluorescence, Raman, FTIR) and real-time (satellite imagery, unmanned aerial vehicles, and aquatic drone technology) microplastic detection methods. Machine learning, micro-hyperspectral imaging, and chemometrics approach to microplastic detections are discussed. The challenges, future directions, and prospects for decreasing global MP pollution and their analysis are discussed.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution is a global problem in recent decades due to their ubiquity in the oceans, sediment, soil, or wastewater. The bioavailability and adsorbability for toxic chemicals of MPs have detrimental effects upon living organisms. This work attempts to provide a critical overview on modern instrumentation and promising techniques for identifying and visualizing micro- or nanoplastics. Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies combined with microscopies, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), hyperspectral imaging (HSI), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were widely used in the identification and visualization of microplastics in organisms and environments. The advantages and limitations of each identification and characterization method were indicated for MP analysis basing on spatial imaging in micro-/nanoscales. In addition, some novel methods may possibly be applied to micro-/nanoplastics identification, such as atomic force microscope (AFM), which may be used to identify and characterize the surface morphology, chemical composition, thermal and mechanical properties of MPs at the nanoscale. However, there is a need to improve and develop new methods to reduce the identification time and effort for sub- or nanomicron plastics and obtain more useful physical and chemical information in environmental MPs.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. The massive production and extensive distribution of microplastics, stemming from postconsumer plastics, have become problematic for the environment and human health. Various studies have reported the hazardous potential and toxicity of microplastics in living organisms, including animals and humans. As a precautionary measure to protect them from microplastic exposure, significant efforts have been made to analyze the distribution of microplastics in the environment. However, each research group individually examined the microplastic distribution in a specific location. Consequently, there is a lack of information regarding the presence of microplastics in wider district units, such as cities and across the nation. In this study, an overview of various case studies in South Korea is provided by discussing the presence and concentration of microplastics in South Korea and examining the reports and research articles on the analysis of microplastic distributions in different locations in South Korea. The current sampling and analysis methods used for microplastic distribution studies were also summarized, along with their technical challenges. The possible sources of primary and secondary microplastics were also discussed to determine the original plastic types of microplastics derived from industries and households.

Abstract:The adverse effects of microplastics (MP) found in food on the health have recently been recognized as a new source of human health risks. In order to evaluate and minimize them, it is necessary to evaluate the exposure using sensitive and specific methods. The aim of the research was the substantiation of methodological approaches to the identification and quantification of microplastics in food based on the analysis of literature data. Material and methods. Literature selection was carried out using the PubMed international reference database for the period from 2014 to 2023 using keywords corresponding to the context of the research theme. A total of 159 sources were selected, of which 94 original and review papers were included in the review according to the criteria of their relevance to the problem under consideration, scientific reliability and completeness. Results. At present, various approaches have been developed that make it possible to isolate MPs from complex bioorganic matrices (such as, for example, seafood), classify them by chemical composition, and quantify their content through the mass or number of particles. Among the most developed physic-chemical methods for the analysis of MPs are Fourier transform IR spectrometry and Raman microspectrometry, pyrolysis gas chromatography - mass spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis, as well as approaches based on liquid chromatography, microfluorimetry, analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopy and others. Unsolved problems in the field of MP research in food include the high laboriousness and low performance of the identification technologies used, the lack of reference and standard samples of MP, the complexity of the equipment used, which makes it difficult to use it for routine hygienic control. The issue of the influence of MP aging degree on the results of its qualitative and quantitative determination has not been sufficiently studied. Some hopes in the field of development of rapid analysis of MTs are pinned on the use of aptamers. Conclusion. Existing analytical methods make it possible to determine the content of MPs in environmental objects, but further improvement and validation of these methods is required in relation to the assessment of the content of MPs in various types of food.

Abstract:Over the decades, interaction of microplastics with other pollutants in a dynamic environmental set up was observed to increase their toxic effects. This scenario is worse in aquatic environments due to the entry of huge loads of microplastic components into the waterbodies through direct plastic dumping and those delivered from effluents originating from various treatment plants. Although extensive research was done to understand the issue associated with microplastic contamination of various aquatic environments, a huge research gap still exists in areas like their ecotoxicology, fate, distribution, and detection methods in aquatic environments. Moreover, the combined deleterious effect of microplastics in association with other environmental pollutants is not widely studied and requires more research focus. The major scope of this review is to present a comprehensive outlook on the recent studies carried out to understand the types, origin, distribution, transport, fate, and toxicity of microplastics in aquatic environments, both fresh water and marine. The review summarizes the ecotoxicological effects of microplastic contaminants in aquatic environment like the oxidative damage, neurotoxicity and decreased reproductive potential. An in-depth discussion regarding the ability of the microplastics in combination with other pollutants to serve as potentially hazardous agents in aquatic environment is also elaborated in the review. Further a on various microplastic detection methods, challenges associated with microplastic detection and management is carefully reviewed and compiled in this work. The need for proper awareness programs to general public highlighting the toxicity of microplastics and strict regulations regarding their continuous assessment and management in waterbodies are essential factors in controlling their adverse effect on aquatic environment.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a major concern worldwide due to their ecotoxicological effects on the environment and public health. The low density of MPs allows for their accumulation in the atmosphere, facilitating their global transportation and direct exposure to the human body by inhalation or ingestion, resulting in adverse health consequences. Therefore, it is critically essential to develop efficient and environmentally-friendly approaches for MP removal. To this end, this review aims to collate advances and new knowledge that emerged in recent years for MPs and their potentially damaging impacts on the ecosystem and human health. Some recent techniques and strategies for overcoming MP effects are also discussed. Furthermore, challenges and future perspectives to mitigate this planetary pollution are addressed. This assessment is intended for an audience that includes scientists in academia, plastic manufacturing firms interested in promoting the manufacture of bio-based plastics, and consumers who have the ability to choose alternative plastic options.

Abstract:Plastic pollution in various forms has emerged as the most severe environmental threat. Small plastic chunks, such as microplastics and nanoplastics derived from primary and secondary sources, are a major concern worldwide due to their adverse effects on the environment and public health. Several years have been spent developing robust spectroscopic techniques that should be considered top-notch; however, researchers are still trying to find efficient and straightforward methods for the analysis of microplastics but have yet to develop a viable solution. Because of the small size of these degraded plastics, they have been found in various species, from human brains to blood and digestive systems. Several pollution-controlling methods have been tested in recent years, and these methods are prominent and need to be developed. Bacterial degradation, sunlight-driven photocatalyst, fuels, and biodegradable plastics could be game-changers in future research on plastic pollution control. However, recent fledgling steps in controlling methods appear insufficient due to widespread contamination. As a result, proper regulation of environmental microplastics is a significant challenge, and the most equitable way to manage plastic pollution. Therefore, this paper discusses the current state of microplastics, some novel and well-known identification techniques, strategies for overcoming microplastic effects, and needed solutions to mitigate this planetary pollution. This review article, we believe, will fill a void in the field of plastic identification and pollution mitigation research.

Abstract:Plastics are widely utilized in industry, agriculture and our daily life due to their low cost and high corrosion resistance, leading to substantial plastic waste in the environment. Under environmental stressors, plastics degrade into micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) with various size, shape, morphology and composition. However, detailed studies on the methods for collecting, treating, and detecting MNPs remain limited. Herein, the review firstly summarizes the sampling procedures of MNPs from environmental and biological compartments. Additionally, methods for the extraction and separation of MNPs are summarized and discussed, followed by a comprehensive overview of the detection methods used for MNPs identification and quantification. Finally, the establishment of standardized and unified methods for the separation, extraction, and identification of MNPs is prospected, providing guidance for systematic and advanced development of pollution survey and risk assessment of MNPs.

Abstract:The widespread presence of micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) in the environment threatens ecosystem integrity, and thus, it is necessary to determine and assess the occurrence, characteristics, and transport of MNPs between ecological components. However, most analytical approaches are cost- and time-inefficient in providing quantitative information with sufficient detail, and interpreting results can be difficult. Alternative analyses integrating novel measurements by imaging or proximal sensing with signal processing and machine learning may supplement these approaches. In this review, we examined published research on methods used for the automated data interpretation of MNPs found in the environment or those artificially prepared by fragmenting bulk plastics. We critically reviewed the primary areas of the integrated analytical process, which include sampling, data acquisition, processing, and modeling, applied in identifying, classifying, and quantifying MNPs in soil, sediment, water, and biological samples. We also provide a comprehensive discussion regarding model uncertainties related to estimating MNPs in the environment. In the future, the development of routinely applicable and efficient methods is expected to significantly contribute to the successful establishment of automated MNP monitoring systems.
