Abstract:Optical vortices, which are beams with helical wavefronts and spiral phase mismatches, have garnered considerable attention in various fields. In this study, we theoretically proposed and experimentally implemented a simple method for generating first-order optical vortices. To generate first-order vortex beams using the polarization field in the momentum space of photonic crystal slabs, topological half charges are required. We propose a method to divide the polarization vortex in the momentum space by breaking symmetry, which results in Dirac points or circularly polarized points. This approach enables the transformation of topological integer charges into topological half-integer charges, thereby facilitating the generation of first-order vortex beams. This approach extends the application of bound states in continuum and topological photonics.

Abstract:The properties of optical vortex provide new insights into a wide range of optical and physical phenomena, giving rise to numerous applications in multiple disciplines. Notably, as much as the associated technologies have become increasingly flexible, it is still challenging to simultaneously generate multiple longitudinal polarization optical vortices with random topological charges (l) and tunable intensities at arbitrary positions. Herein, a novel approach that, by manipulating phase and amplitude at the back pupil of a high numerical-aperture (NA) objective, realizes arbitrary longitudinal polarization vortices within the tightly focused light field is developed. Building upon the same model, the impacts of polarization on the optical vortex field and its potential of tuning the ratio of the longitudinal polarization component are further investigated.

Abstract:Perfect optical vortex (POV) is a type of vortex beam with an infinite thin ring and a fixed radius independent of its topological charge. Here we propose the concept of generalized perfect optical vortex along arbitrary curves beyond the regular shapes of circle and ellipse. Generalized perfect optical vortices also share the similar properties as POVs, such as defined only along infinite thin curves and owning topological charges independent of scales. Notably, they naturally degenerate to the POVs and elliptic POVs along circles and ellipses, respectively. We also experimentally generated the generalized perfect optical vortices through a digital micromirror device (DMD) and measured the phase distributions by interferometry, exhibiting good agreements with the simulations. Moreover, we derive a proper modified formula to yield the generalized perfect optical vortices with uniform intensity distribution along predesigned curves. The generalized perfect optical vortices might find the potential applications in optical tweezers and communication.

Abstract:An optical vortex (OV) is a beam with spiral wave front and screw phase dislocation. This kind of beams is attracting rising interest in various fields. Here we theoretically proposed and experimentally realized a novel but easy approach to generate optical vortices. We leverage the inherent topological vortex structures of polarization around bound states in the continuum (BIC) in the momentum space of two dimensional periodic structures, e.g. photonic crystal slabs, to induce Pancharatnam-Berry phases to the beams. This new class of OV generators operates in the momentum space, meaning that there is no real-space center of structure. Thus, not only the fabrication but also the practical alignment would be greatly simplified. Any even order of OV, which is actually a quasi-non-diffractive high-order quasi-Bessel beam, at any desired working wavelength could be achieved in principle. The proposed approach expands the application of bound states in the continuum and topological photonics.

Abstract:The generation of a perfect optical vortex (POV) has been an important area of research since the concept was introduced by Ostrovsky <i>et al.</i> [Opt. Lett. <b>38</b>, 534 (2013)]. In this Letter, we provide the details of the experimental demonstration of a POV using perfect Laguerre–Gaussian beams via a phase-only spatial light modulator. The perfect beam properties, including radius, beam width, and ring thickness, are investigated in detail. We verify the vortex nature of the proposed perfect Laguerre–Gaussian beams including their topological charge value and sign. Finally, in addition to the scalar beams, we propose the vector perfect Laguerre–Gaussian beams both theoretically and experimentally and evaluate their perfect characteristics. The derived results clearly illustrate the perfect characteristics of such beams independent of the polarization state. The findings reported here can find significant applications in various fields including optical tweezers, optical imaging, and high capacity optical communications.

Abstract:We investigated the propagation dynamics of the Circular Airy Beams (CAB) with optical vortices (OVs) by numerical calculation. Comparing to the common CAB, the maximum intensity of CAB with vortices can be increased greatly at the focal plane and its focal intensity profile is doughnut-shaped when an on-axis vortex is imposed. The case for an off-axis OV and multiple OVs have been investigated as well. We demonstrate that two opposite OVs will annihilate exactly at the focal plane, with the focal intensity is highly increased. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:This article reviews recent progress leading to the generation of optical vortex beams. After introducing the basics of optical vortex beams and their promising applications, we summarized different approaches for optical vortex generation by discrete components and laser cavities. We place particular emphasis on the recent development of vortex generation by the planar phase plates, which are able to engineer a spiral phase-front via dynamic or geometric phase in nanoscale, and highlight the independent operation of these two different phases which leads to a multifunctional optical vortex beam generation and independent spin-orbit interaction. We also introduced the recent progress on vortex lasing, including vortex beam generation from the output of bulk lasers by modification of conventional laser cavities with phase elements and from integrated on-chip microlasers. Similar approaches are also applied to generate fractional vortex beams carrying fractional topological charge. The advanced technology and approaches on design and nanofabrications enable multiple vortex beams generation from a single device via multiplexing, multicasting, and vortex array, open up opportunities for applications on data processing, information encoding/decoding, communication and parallel data processing, and micromanipulations.

Abstract:Due to the helical phase profile as well as the topological charge-independent doughnut spatial structure, perfect vortex beams have attract attentions in fiber communications and particle manipulations. However, for some advanced applications such as optical cage and optical microfluidic sorting and acceleration, it is more meaningful to generate asymmetric optical vortex fields such as elliptic perfect optical vortex (EPOV) beams. Herein we utilize silicon nitride nanopillars, functioning as half-wave plates, to construct high-efficiency geometric phase metasurfaces for the generation of EPOV beams with the integer and fractional topological charges in the ultraviolet range. By adjusting scaling factor, the shape of beams can be freely changed from circle to ellipse. In addition, multi-channel EPOV beams with arbitrary shape and different topological charges are produced with the help of the superposition principle of phase in Fourier space. We envision that this ultraviolet metasurface-based generator of EPOV beams can be used for manipulation of microscopic particle along an ellipse with acceleration and for the generation OAM-entangled photons.

Abstract:We have proposed an approach for rapid generation of perfect vortex beam without side lobes through a digital micromirror device (DMD). Employing this method, the amplitude and phase of far field can be controlled indirectly by changing the rotation state of each unit on the DMD. The perfect vortex beams of equal rings diameter independent of their topological charges are generated commendably and the side lobes are avoided. Moreover, we have demonstrated rapid switching among the generated orbital angular momentum modes at the speed of 10 kHz, which is much faster than that of the usual method realized by spatial light modulators (SLMs). The proposed method is very beneficial for the optical communication and trapping or manipulating the small particle based on orbital angular momentum modes.

Abstract:A perfect vortex beam (PVB) is a propagating optical field carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) with a radial intensity profile that is independent of topological charge. PVBs can be generated through the Fourier transform of a Bessel-Gaussian beam, which typically requires a well-aligned optical setup consisting of a spiral phase plate, an axion, and a lens. Here, based on a single-layer dielectric metasurface, the broadband generation of PVBs across the entire visible spectrum is demonstrated. The metasurface is composed of TiO2 nanopillars acting as deep-subwavelength half-waveplates, and able to provide the desired geometric phase profile to an incident circularly polarized light for the generation of PVBs. Through rigorous optimization of the nanopillars' structural parameters, the authors experimentally generate vortex beams carrying OAM with different topological charges that exhibit constant radial intensity profiles, verifying their "perfect" characteristics. Furthermore, it is also demonstrated that the ellipticity and diameter of a PVB can be simultaneously controlled by adjusting the structural parameters of the metasurface, which further increases the flexibility in their design. These results open a new route towards creating ultra-compact, flat, multifunctional nanophotonic platforms for efficient generation of structured light beams.

Abstract:A Highly flexible and efficient method of generating stable radially and Azimuthally polarized perfect optical vortex beams and all higher-order cylindrical vector vortex beams are proposed and demonstrated. The method is the most convenient implementation of the superposition of two orthogonally circularly polarized optical vortex beams of arbitrary integer topological charges. By simply controlling the relative amplitude and phase between vertical and horizontal polarization component of an input perfect vortex beam on a phase-sensitive Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) and using a common-path interferometry, all arbitrary order Poincaré beams are prepared. Calibration curve of relative phase vs grey-scale of the phase function on the SLM is drawn to facilitate the determination of required phase-offset using pre-calculated grey-scale colour-map. Generated beams states of polarization are uniformly distributed throughout the beam cross-section. The interference pattern of the two-beam in a projected linear polarization state also gives the cylindrically symmetric petal beams with control over the number and orientation of petals.

Characteristics of an elliptical Airy beam with a circular concentric vortex and its realization

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally study the propagation characteristics of elliptical Airy vortex beams (EAVBs) with a circular concentric vortex. It is found that EAVBs inherit the abruptly autofocusing properties of the circular Airy beams (CABs), but EAVBs will have a better autofocusing performance than circular Airy vortex beams (CAVBs) under certain conditions. It is also found that the initial m-order concentric vortex of EAVBs splits into vertical bar m vertical bar first-order vortices at the autofocusing plane, and the focusing pattern splits into vertical bar m vertical bar + 1 bright spots with the pattern's tilting direction related to the sign of m [m is the topological charge (TC) of the vortex]. Abstract:Perfect optical vortices enable the unprecedented optical multiplexing utilizing orbital angular momentum of light, which, however, suffer from distortion when they propagate in inhomogeneous media. Herein, we report on the experimental demonstration of perfect optical vortice generation through strongly scattering media. The transmission-matrix-based point-spread-function engineering is applied to encode the targeted mask in the Fourier domain before focusing. We experimentally demonstrate the perfect optical vortice generation either through a multimode fiber or a ground glass, where the numerical results agree well with the measured one. Our results might facilitate the manipulation of orbital angular momentum of light through disordered scattering media and shed new light on the optical multiplexing utilizing perfect optical vortices.

Abstract:Recently, the optical vortex (OV) has gained increasing interest since the potential for applications of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by optical vortex beams. However, generation is currently limited single static cricular intensity profile, greatly constraining the breadth of achievable spatiotemporal dynamics. Here, we propose a novel phase distribution to generate a dynamic propagation OV with a customized topological charge (TC ≥ 10) based on Fibonacci series annular subzone by tailoring the local phase gradient along the azimuthal direction. We describe the generation of the Fibonacci series annular subzone vortex phase. The Fibonacci vortex beam (FVB) have customization TC, multi-singularity intensity distributions. Furthermore, such optical fields exhibit the spatial dynamic rotation and self-focusing have yielded fascinating phenomena. The simulation results are agreed with the experimental results, which provides an important basis for the generation of OV with spatial dynamic propagation. These results contribute to the advanced complex light manipulation with spatial dynamic propagation and pave the way to achieve a new laser with the structured light based on modified phase control.

Abstract:A general analytical formula for the propagation of the new kind of power-exponent-phase vortex beam through a paraxial ABCD optical system is derived. With two different calculation methods, the evolution of the intensity distribution and phase contour of such a beam in free space is investigated. Some experiments are carried out to verify the theoretical predictions. Both of the theoretical and experimental results show that the beam's profile can be modulated by the topological charge and the power order. In addition, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) density and the normalized OAM of such a beam are also studied.

Abstract:The recognition in the 1990s that vortex beams (VBs), paraxial light beams with optical vortices, carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), has benefited applications ranging from optical manipulation to high-dimensional classical and quantum information communications. The transverse profiles of common VBs, e.g., Laguerre-Gaussian beam and high-order Bessel beam, are hollow donuts whose radii grow up with OAM inevitably. The inherently unperfect character of the VBs that the radius is always positively correlated with OAM, restricts the application of the VBs in many scenarios like fiber optic data transmission, spatial OAM mode (de)multiplexing communication, and particle manipulation, which call for VBs to have the same scale with distinct OAM or even the small vortex ring for large OAM. Here, we derived a theory based on the most widely used Laguerre-Gaussian beam to generate a brand new type of VB with OAM-independent radii that moves away from the common unperfect constraint, called Laguerre-Gaussian Perfect Vortex Beam (LGPVB). LGPVBs have the self-similar property like common Laguerre-Gaussian beams but can self-heal after suffering disturbance and always remain 'perfection' when propagating. Our Fourier-space design not only allows us to shape the LGPVB's propagating intensity at will, but it also gives LGPVB the fascinating potential to arbitrarily self-accelerate while still perfectly propagating, self-similar, and self-healing. This customizable self-healing LGPVB, whose properties inform our most expectations of VBs, offers a better alternative for application scenarios of common VBs in a wide range of areas.
