Abstract:Femtosecond dual-comb lasers have revolutionized linear Fourier-domain spectroscopy by offering a rapid motion-free, precise, and accurate measurement mode with easy registration of the combs beat note in the radio frequency domain. Extensions of this technique already found application for nonlinear time-resolved spectroscopy within the energy limit available from sources operating at the full oscillator repetition rate. Here, we present a technique based on time filtering of femtosecond frequency combs by pulse gating in a laser amplifier. This gives the required boost to the pulse energy and provides the flexibility to engineer pairs of arbitrarily delayed wavelength-tunable pulses for pump–probe techniques. Using a dual-channel millijoule amplifier, we demonstrate programmable generation of both extremely short, fs, and extremely long (>ns) interpulse delays. A predetermined arbitrarily chosen interpulse delay can be directly realized in each successive amplifier shot, eliminating the massive waiting time required to alter the delay setting by means of an optomechanical line or an asynchronous scan of 2 free-running oscillators. We confirm the versatility of this delay generation method by measuring χ (2) cross-correlation and χ (3) multicomponent population recovery kinetics.

Abstract:The dispersion scan (d-scan) technique is extended to measurement of the timedependent polarization state of ultrashort laser pulses. In the simplest implementation for linearly polarized ultrashort pulses, the d-scan technique records the second harmonic generation (SHG) spectrum as a function of a known spectral phase manipulation. By applying this method to two orthogonally polarized projections of an arbitrary polarized electric field and by measuring the spectrum at an intermediate angle, we can reconstruct the evolution over time of the polarization state. We demonstrate the method by measuring a polarization gate generated from 6 fs pulses with a combination of waveplates. The measurements are compared to simulations, showing an excellent agreement.

Abstract:Ultra-short laser pulses with femtosecond to attosecond pulse duration are the shortest systematic events humans can create. Characterization (amplitude and phase) of these pulses is a key ingredient in ultrafast science, e.g., exploring chemical reactions and electronic phase transitions. Here, we propose and demonstrate, numerically and experimentally, the first deep neural network technique to reconstruct ultra-short optical pulses. We anticipate that this approach will extend the range of ultrashort laser pulses that can be characterized, e.g., enabling to diagnose very weak attosecond pulses.

Abstract:During High-harmonic generation (HHG) process, information of field interacting with the medium is imprinted in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation. Here, we present a method using HHG to diagnose the electric field of an optical pulse under a collinear geometry. When mixing a weak signal pulse with a strong driving pulse collinearly, the far field divergence of the XUV HHG is sensitive to the relative delay between the two pulses, which can be used as an ultrafast subcycle gate to reconstruct the electric field of the signal pulse. This collinear configuration is efficient, easy to operate and avoids artificial high order frequency components in reconstruction as compared to non-collinear scheme.

Abstract:As an important nonlinear optical imaging method, multiphoton excitation has demonstrated its wide application in biomedical imaging. Although shorter pulse can induce a higher nonlinear effect, most applications are still restricted in 100 fs region due to the existence of high-order dispersion. Through the compensation of high-order dispersion with multiphoton intrapulse interference, we successfully introduce 10 fs pulse into multiphoton biomedical imaging. We find that a deeper penetration and a correct excitation of multiple dyes can be obtained with this method.

Abstract:We numerically study the relativistic ponderomotive scattering of an ultrafast electron beam with a focused high-intensity laser pulse using a three-dimensional test-particle code. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution and the energy spectrum of the scattered electron beam are investigated. The method using the ponderomotive scattering effect to measure the pulse duration of an ultrashort electron beam is discussed in detail. Taking into account the group velocity mismatch, the interaction geometry, and electron energy spectrum modified by the ponderomotive forces, the pulse duration of ultrashort electron beams can be retrieved by the ponderomotive scattering cross-correlation method.

Abstract:In most applications of ultrashort pulse lasers, temporal compressors are used to achieve a desired pulse duration in a target or sample, and precise temporal characterization is important. The dispersion-scan (d-scan) pulse characterization technique usually involves using glass wedges to impart variable, well-defined amounts of dispersion to the pulses, while measuring the spectrum of a nonlinear signal produced by those pulses. This works very well for broadband few-cycle pulses, but longer, narrower bandwidth pulses are much more difficult to measure this way. Here we demonstrate the concept of self-calibrating d-scan, which extends the applicability of the d-scan technique to pulses of arbitrary duration, enabling their complete measurement without prior knowledge of the introduced dispersion. In particular, we show that the pulse compressors already employed in chirped pulse amplification (CPA) systems can be used to simultaneously compress and measure the temporal profile of the output pulses on-target in a simple way, without the need of additional diagnostics or calibrations, while at the same time calibrating the often-unknown differential dispersion of the compressor itself. We demonstrate the technique through simulations and experiments under known conditions. Finally, we apply it to the measurement and compression of 27.5 fs pulses from a CPA laser.

Single-scan acquisition of multiple multidimensional spectra

Abstract:Multidimensional coherent spectroscopy is a powerful tool for understanding the ultrafast dynamics of complex quantum systems. To fully characterize the nonlinear optical response of a system, multiple pulse sequences must be recorded and quantitatively compared. We present a new single-scan method that enables rapid and parallel acquisition of all unique pulse sequences corresponding to first- and third-order degenerate wave-mixing processes. Signals are recorded with shot-noise limited detection, enabling acquisition times of ~2 minutes with ~100 zs phase stability and ~8 orders of dynamic range, in a collinear geometry, on a single-pixel detector. We demonstrate this method using quantum well excitons, and quantitative analysis reveals new insights into the bosonic nature of excitons. This scheme may enable rapid and scalable analysis of unique chemical signatures, metrology of optical susceptibilities, nonperturbative coherent control, and the implementation of quantum information protocols using multidimensional spectroscopy.

Abstract:A novel method for simultaneous 3-D imaging using chirped ultrashort light pulses is proposed. Simultaneous imaging without scanning is possible by means of the conversion between the time and the color axes mediated by the chirped pulse. The theoretical limitation of the spatial resolution is discussed. We proved the efficacy of this method by measuring an area composing three flat steps made of three gauge blocks of different lengths with an accuracy of better than 0.3 mm. This technique is applicable for imaging of the shape of moving objects, or surface testing or inspection.

Abstract:The precise temporal characterization of laser pulses is crucial for ultrashort applications in biology, chemistry, and physics. Especially in femto- and attosecond science, diverse laser pulse sources in different spectral regimes from the visible to the short-wavelength infrared as well as pulse durations ranging from picoseconds to few femtoseconds are employed. In this article, we present a versatile temporal-characterization apparatus that can access these different temporal and spectral regions in a dispersion-free manner and without phase-matching constraints. The design combines transient-grating and surface third-harmonic-generation frequency-resolved optical gating in one device with optimized alignment capabilities based on a noncollinear geometry.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method to characterize the temporal structure of arbitrary optical laser pulses with low pulse energies. This approach is based on strong field photoelectron holography with the glory rescattering effect as the underlying mechanism in the near-forward direction. Utilizing the subfemtosecond glory rescattering process as a fast temporal gate to sample the unknown light pulse, the time-dependent vectorial electric field can be retrieved from the streaking photoelectron momentum spectra. Our method avoids the challenging task of generation or manipulation of attosecond pulses and signifies important progress in arbitrary optical waveform characterization.

Abstract:We propose a novel single-shot pulse-contrast measurement approach based on high-order quasi-phase-matching (QPM) cross correlation. It supports perfect contrast measurement with features of no artifacts, high resolution, and large temporal window. The prototype experiment based on the noncollinear third QPM with a beam crossing angle of 90 deg, using femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses with a contrast of ~10(7), demonstrates an artifacts-free measurement with a temporal window of ~70 ps and a resolution of ~900 fs.
A deconvolution based signal reconstruction capable of piled-up pulse separation

Abstract:This study provides a computationally effective deconvolution algorithm capable to reconstruct piled-up events in scintillating detector systems with high count rate where fully digitized waveforms are available. A fixed-point iteration algorithm is suggested and used to find properties of the signals which are later used during the signal preprocessing stage. The impulse response function is successfully extracted even from heavily piled-up event waveforms using an iterative approach. A methodology for pulse time and amplitude reconstruction is based on a deconvolution algorithm, which is described in details and some results are presented. The presented algorithms are meant to be general and might be successfully applied to other fields with minor to no modifications.

Abstract:Tailoring pulses with intertwined spatial and temporal degrees of freedom is a promising research area that offers applications in nonlinear optics, precision machining, and imaging to mention a few. The key requirement for harnessing such spatiotemporal light structures in their entirety is to accurately discern their physical properties. Here, we demonstrate that ptychography can be applied to reveal the modal, frequency, and temporal attributes of such ultrafast spatiotemporal optical pulses. To demonstrate the potential of our scheme, we examine optical fields with intricate spatial and spectrotemporal correlations. Further, since the exact structure of the pulses is determined utilizing purely linear interactions, our approach can serve to probe and correct a great variety of spatiotemporal designs.

Abstract:Imaging systems measuring intensity in the far field succumb to Rayleigh's curse, a resolution limitation dictated by the finite aperture of the optical system. Many proof-of-principle and some two-dimensional imaging experiments have shown that, by using spatial mode demultiplexing (SPADE), the field information collected is maximal, and thus, the resolution increases beyond the Rayleigh criterion. Hitherto, the SPADE approaches are based on resolving the lateral splitting of a Gaussian wavefunction. Here, we consider the case in which the light field originates from a bi-photon source, i.e. spontaneous parametric down-conversion, and a horizontal separation is introduced in one of the two photons. We show that a separation induced in the signal photon arm can be super-resolved using coincidence measurements after projecting both photons on Hermite-Gauss modes. Remarkably the Fisher information associated with the measurement is enhanced compared to the ordinary SPADE techniques by $\sqrt{K}$, where $K$ is the Schmidt number of the two-photon state that quantifies the amount of spatial entanglement between the two photons.

Abstract:The attosecond streaking technique is normally utilized to characterize the attosecond pulses in extreme ultraviolet spectrum, while the pulse simulation and reconstruction schemes turn out to be unreliable for extremely short sub-100as pulses. Based on systematical analysis and subtle investigation, we developed a dynamic streaking model for ultrashort photoelectron pulses and demonstrated concretely how the temporal phase of attosecond pulses would influence the streaked spectrogram. Upon that, a novel numeric scheme is established to retrieve the pulse-lengths and chirps. Different with the traditional FROG-CRAB algorithm utilizing the central energy approximation, our approach concerns the actual time-energy distribution of an electron wave-packet within sub-100as time-scale, capable for retrieving the temporal profiles of the ultrashort pulse more accurately.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the properties of coherent femtosecond single electron wave packets photoemitted from nanotips in view of their application in ultrafast electron diffraction and non-destructive imaging with low-energy electrons. For two different geometries, we analyze the temporal and spatial broadening during propagation from the needle emitter to an anode, identifying the experimental parameters and challenges for realizing femtosecond time resolution. The simple tip-anode geometry is most versatile and allows for electron pulses of several ten of femtosecond duration using a very compact experimental design, however, providing very limited control over the electron beam collimation. A more sophisticated geometry comprising a suppressor-extractor electrostatic unit and a lens, similar to typical field emission electron microscope optics, is also investigated, allowing full control over the beam parameters. Using such a design, we find ∼230 fs pulses feasible in a focused electron beam. The main limitation to achieve sub-hundred femtosecond time resolution is the typical size of such a device, and we suggest the implementation of more compact electron optics for optimal performance.

Abstract:Ultrafast electron and X-ray imaging and spectroscopy are the basis for an ongoing revolution in the understanding of dynamical atomic-scale processes in matter. The underlying technology relies heavily on laser science for the generation and characterization of ever shorter pulses. Recent findings suggest that ultrafast electron microscopy with attosecond-structured wavefunctions may be feasible. However, such future technologies call for means to both prepare and fully analyse the corresponding free-electron quantum states. Here, we introduce a framework for the preparation, coherent manipulation and characterization of free-electron quantum states, experimentally demonstrating attosecond electron pulse trains. Phase-locked optical fields coherently control the electron wavefunction along the beam direction. We establish a new variant of quantum state tomography—‘SQUIRRELS’—for free-electron ensembles. The ability to tailor and quantitatively map electron quantum states will promote the nanoscale study of electron–matter entanglement and new forms of ultrafast electron microscopy down to the attosecond regime.
