Abstract:This study is attempted to improve the hydrogen sensing performance of SnO 2 based sensors by simultaneously employing two strategies of morphology control and noble metal loading. Therefore, SnO 2 ultrathin nanosheets with thickness not exceeding 3.5 nm were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method and then different content of Pd nanoparticles were uniformly loaded onto SnO 2 surface by in situ reduction with ascorbic acid. The gas sensing properties demonstrated that the introduction of Pd not only altered the selectivity of the SnO 2 sensor from ethanol to hydrogen, but also significantly improved the gas sensitivity and reduced the working temperature. And the optimal 1.0%Pd/SnO 2 sensor owned the highest sensitivity (75), fastest response-recovery property (21 s/13 s) to 20 ppm of hydrogen at 220 °C, and the actual detection limit is as low as 0.1 ppm. Furthermore, 1.0%Pd/SnO 2 sensor exhibited excellent repeatability, reproducibility and acceptable anti-interference of humidity. The DFT studies suggest that the physisorption of the hydrogen molecules on the surface of SnO 2 , but chemisorption on the surface of Pd/SnO 2 . The improved H 2 sensing performance of Pd/SnO 2 sensor attributes its ultrathin thickness of SnO 2 and catalytic dissociation of Pd to O 2 and H 2 .

Abstract:Pd-SnO2 composite nanoceramics have been prepared from SnO2 and Pd nanoparticles through traditional pressing and sintering. Their responses to CO at room temperature are found to depend greatly on the content of Pd. For those samples with 1.0 and 5.0 mol% Pd, their resistance increases dramatically upon being exposed to CO in air; while for samples of 0.2 mol% Pd, their resistance decreases greatly upon being exposed to CO in air, and extraordinary room-temperature CO sensing capabilities, including high sensitivities around 15, short response time of 20 s and recovery time of 60 s for 100 ppm CO in air, a high selectivity against H-2, have been observed for them. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses showed that Pd2+ was formed in samples of 1 mol% Pd, while both Pd2+ and Pd4+ were formed in samples of 0.2 mol% Pd. It is proposed that for Pd-SnO2 composite nanoceramics, Pd2+ is responsible for CO-induced increase while Pd4+ is responsible for CO-induced decrease in resistance.
Enhanced gas-sensing performance of SnO2/Nb2O5 hybrid nanowires

Abstract:Semiconductor tin oxide (SnO2) is acknowledged to be one of the semiconductor oxides with most potential for utilization as nitrogen dioxide (NO2)-sensor materials. However, the challenge to improve the gas sensitivity still remains, and this limits the full realization of the SnO2 sensor potential. In this paper, enhanced gas sensitivity obtained by the formation of a SnO2/niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) hybrid structure is reported. As the NO2 concentration is lower to 3 ppm, the measured resistance in the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor is still 2.5 times larger than that in a pristine SnO2-based sensor. With an increase in the NO2 concentration, the response time of the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor decreases sharply whereas the pristine SnO2-based sensor response time increases. The enhanced performance is attributed to the presence of more oxygen vacancies and a higher specific surface area in the hybrid structure induced by the introduction of Nb2O5. These results provide some general guidelines for the selection of compositions to enhance the sensor performance.
Sensitive H2 Gas Sensors Based on SnO2 Nanowires

Abstract:Sensitive H-2 gas sensors are highly desirable for the prediction and early-warning of H-2 leakage. Low-dimensional nanostructures of metal oxide semiconductor emerge as promising materials candidates, but it remains a challenge to preserve the nanostructures in the real sensors. In this work, we demonstrated highly sensitive H-2 gas sensors based on porous network of SnO2 nanowires that exhibited ultrasmall diameter similar to 2 nm. Colloidal SnO2 nanowires synthesized via a solvothermal process were drop-coated onto the commercial alumina substrates, followed by in-situ annealing treatment at 350 degrees C to remove the surface ligands. The sensors exhibited sensitive response with linear dependence on the H-2 gas concentration ranging from 2 ppm to 100 ppm when operated at 250 degrees C. Typically, the sensor had a response of 13 toward 40 ppm of H-2, with the response and recovery time being 15 s and 31 s, respectively. To further improve the sensor performance, Palladium doped SnO2 nanowires were thoroughly investigated. It's shown that, the operating temperature of the sensor decreased from 250 degrees C to 150 degrees C after Pd doping, and the response and recovery time decreased to 6 s/3 s. The superb sensitivity was attributed to the enhanced gas reception, electron transport as well as utility factor owing to the network nanostructure of ultrathin SnO2 nanowires and catalytic activity of Pd, according to theoretical calculation and adsorption kinetics studies. Combined with the excellent solution processability, the colloidal SnO2 nanowires are potentially attractive for next-generation gas sensors with lower power consumption and integration with silicon-based substrates.

Abstract:Highly accurate and sensitive hydrogen detection particularly at (sub)ppb level is crucial for large-scale use of green hydrogen energy. However, state-of-the-art hydrogen sensors usually have a ppm-level limit of detection (LOD). In this work, SnO 2 nanofibers were decorated with Pd single atoms using a scalable two-step annealing method, which remarkably boosted the H 2 sensing properties. The Pd-SnO 2 nanofiber sensor exhibited a response of 224 to 1000 ppm H 2 at the optimum operation temperature of 300°C, which was 107 times higher than that of SnO 2 , achieving an LOD as low as 0.6 ppb. Moreover, a fast response time of 8.4 s, excellent selectivity, and humidity tolerance were observed. The superior H 2 sensing performance of Pd-SnO 2 nanofiber was ascribed to excellent catalysis of Pd single atoms and formation of heterojunction.

Abstract:The present investigation dealt with the fabrication of H2 gas sensor based on Pd doped SnO2. Porous SnO2 nanostructured film were fabricated by spray pyrolysis route using tin chloride pentahydrate (SnCl4.5H2O) solution as starting material, and PdCl2 as a dopant. Resistance measurements at different temperatures and concentration of H2 have been carried out with the samples. Microstructure and palladium dopant have been found to be critical factors determining the gas sensing properties of Pd/SnO2 specimens. The comparative gas sensitivity tests showed the excellent H2 sensing properties of the sensor in air was suggested to arise mainly from the improvement of gas absorption and catalytic effect of nano Pd dopant.
Morphology and size effect of Pd nanocrystals on formaldehyde and hydrogen sensing performance of SnO2 based gas sensor

Abstract:In order to investigate the morphology and size effect of Pd nanocrystals on gas sensing performance of SnO2, Pd nanocrystals with different sizes (3, 20, 50 nm) and morphologies were synthesized and a series of Pd-SnO2 composites were prepared by decorating Pd nanoparticles (PdNP, ~3 nm), Pd nanocube (PdNC1, ~20 nm), Pd nanocube (PdNC2, ~50 nm), Pd rhombic dodecahedron (PdRD, ~50 nm), Pd octahedron (PdOC, ~50 nm) on the surface of SnO2 nanosheets. The test results showed that all Pd-SnO2 sensors exhibited dual selectivity to H2 at 200 °C and HCHO at 260 °C. In all Pd-SnO2 composites with different sizes of Pd, 2%PdNP-SnO2 sensor exhibited the best sensing performance. In all Pd-SnO2 composites with different shapes of Pd but similar size, PdNC1-SnO2 and PdOC-SnO2 sensors exhibited better sensing performance to HCHO and H2, respectively. Pd-SnO2 composites showed Pd shape and size-dependent sensing performance, and the size effect is more significant than morphology effect. Size effect is ascribed to the smaller size with more active sites and PdO species, and shape effect is attributed to the different adsorption energies of different facets to HCHO, which is proved by DFT calculation. In addition, the improved performance of SnO2 can be ascribed to two aspects: one is the suitable catalytic activity of Pd to HCHO and H2 oxidation; the other is that the transformation of Pd⇋PdO in air and HCHO or H2 leads to a large resistance change of SnO2.

Abstract:Monometallic-catalyst modification is a popular means for boosting sensing performances of gas sensors based on semiconductor metal oxides, but it is restricted to the single-type of catalytic activity, hardly insuring high-level regulation of sensor performances. Herein, through combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in-situ testing technologies, we presented the modulation of both electronic structure and reaction kinetic process of the sensing surfaces by introducing bimetal alloy catalysts. When used AuPd alloys to modify SnO2 surfaces, it appeared obviously discriminative sensing behaviors, possessing high response signal (Rair/Rgas = 36.6) and ultra-high selectivity to 10 ppm dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) gas at 135 °C, which is considerably different from pure SnO2, monometallic Au or Pd doped SnO2. DFT calculations confirmed the occurrence of the charge transfer that was from AuPd alloys to SnO2 and the reinforce of surface adsorption strength for DMDS, which may be a major reason for a high gas response to DMDS. In-situ diffuse scattering Fourier transform infrared spectra and quasi in-situ XPS test demonstrated that the surface reaction site for DMDS molecules was mainly located on surfaces of AuPd alloys, and the “sulfur spillover” that generated from alloys surfaces to SnO2 played a crucial role during DMDS-sensing process, which was further validated by kinetic reaction-pathway calculations. This work will enrich basic research of catalytic electronics in sensor field.

Abstract:This study focuses on growth of two‐dimensional SnS film via pulsed laser deposition and tuning gas sensing properties via metal nanoparticles (Pd, Ag, and Au) decoration. A significant enhancement is observed in NO2 sensing of Ag‐decorated SnS. While Pd‐decorated SnS exhibits selectivity toward H2, In‐situ Kelvin probe force microscopy is used to aid the comprehension of sensing mechanism. This study employs novel growth methodologies and surface sensitization with metal nanoparticles to enhance and manipulate gas sensing behavior of two‐dimensional (2D)SnS film. Growth of SnS films is optimized by varying substrate temperature and laser pulses during pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Thereafter, palladium (Pd), gold (Au), and silver (Ag) nanoparticles are decorated on as‐grown film using gas‐phase synthesis techniques. X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and Field‐emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) elucidate the growth evolution of SnS and the effect of nanoparticle decoration. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses the chemical state and composition. Pristine SnS, Ag, and Au decorated SnS films are sensitive and selective toward NO2 at room temperature (RT). Ag nanoparticle increases the response of pristine SnS from 48 to 138% toward 2 ppm NO2, which indicates electronic and chemical sensitization effect of Ag. Pd decoration on SnS tunes its selectivity toward H2 gas with a response of 55% toward 70 ppm H2 and limit of detection (LOD) < 1 ppm. In situ Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) maps the work function changes, revealing catalytic effect of Ag toward NO2 in Ag‐decorated SnS and direct charge transfer between Pd and SnS during H2 exposure in Pd‐decorated SnS.

Abstract:Pure and Pd-loaded SnO2 cubic nanocages with hierarchically nanoparticle-assembled and porous shells have been successfully fabricated through a straightforward multi-step route. The synthetic step dependent structure evolution and the formation mechanism have been discussed. Furthermore, the toluene-sensing performances of these Pd-loaded SnO2 nanocages are elaborated and compared with those of pure SnO2. The toluene sensing results demonstrate that Pd-loaded SnO2 nanocages with the optimal loading amount of 1.0 mol% show a low detection limit (0.1 ppm) with response of 41.4-20 ppm toluene at the working temperature of 230 degrees C with the fast response time of 0.4 s, and improved selectivity. The improvement of toluene sensing properties is not only attributed to the effective utility of hollow and porous architecture, but also due to the dramatic sensitization of the loaded Pd nanoparticles. Abstract:Porous SnO2 nanostructured film gas sensor was fabricated by spray pyrolysis route using tin chloride pentahydrate (SnCl4·5H2O) and PdCl2 dopant as starting material. The phase, morphology and porous microstructure of the samples were characterized by XRD, FE-SEM and BET, respectively. Hydrogen sensitivity test reveals that the nanostructured gas sensor processes rapid response in 10-4 concentration of H2 at temperature below 150°C, and the phenomenon can be attributed to pore structure and the improvement of gas absorption and catalytic effect of Pd dopant.
Pt‐Pd Nanoalloys Functionalized Mesoporous SnO2 Spheres: Tailored Synthesis, Sensing Mechanism, and Device Integration

Abstract:Platinum‐palladium nanoalloys functionalized mesoporous SnO2 microspheres (Pt‐Pd/SnO2) with high surface area and large mesopore size are elaborately designed. The strong covalent bonding interaction and fast electron transmission between the Pt‐Pd nanoalloys and SnO2 support, endow Pt‐Pd/SnO2 with satisfied methanesensing properties, providing advanced insights on the construction of high‐performance metal oxide gas sensors. Methane (CH4), as the vital energy resource and industrial chemicals, is highly flammable and explosive for concentrations above the explosive limit, triggering potential risks to personal and production safety. Therefore, exploiting smart gas sensors for real‐time monitoring of CH4 becomes extremely important. Herein, the Pt‐Pd nanoalloy functionalized mesoporous SnO2 microspheres (Pt‐Pd/SnO2) were synthesized, which show uniform diameter (≈500 nm), high surface area (40.9–56.5 m2 g−1), and large mesopore size (8.8–15.8 nm). The highly dispersed Pt‐Pd nanoalloys are confined in the mesopores of SnO2, causing the generation ofoxygen defects and increasing the carrier concentration of sensitive materials. The representative Pt1‐Pd4/SnO2 exhibits superior CH4 sensing performance with ultrahigh response (Ra/Rg = 21.33 to 3000 ppm), fast response/recovery speed (4/9 s), as well as outstanding stability. Spectroscopic analyses imply that such an excellent CH4 sensing process involves the fast conversion of CH4 into formic acid and CO intermediates, and finally into CO2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the attractive covalent bonding interaction and rapid electron transfer between the Pt‐Pd nanoalloys and SnO2 support, dramatically promote the orbital hybridization of Pd4 sites and adsorbed CH4 molecules, enhancing the catalytic activation of CH4 over the sensing layer.

Pd-Loaded Sno2 Ultrathin Nanorod-Assembled Hollow Microspheres with the Significant Improvement for Toluene Detection

Abstract:Pd-loaded SnO2 hollow microspheres have been successfully prepared via a facile one-pot hydrothermal route and subsequent Pd-loaded treatment without involving any templates, surfactants, or capping agents. The morphological and structural characterization confirms that Pd-loaded SnO2 hollow micro spheres are hierarchically constructed of numerous well-aligned rodlike SnO2 subunits with ultrathin diameter of about 5-10 nm and monodisperse Pd particles with several nanometers in size. The time dependent investigation demonstrates that the formation of hierarchical SnO2 hollow spheres is driven by Ostwald-ripening mechanism. Furthermore, gas sensors based on pure and Pd-loaded SnO2 have been fabricated. The Pd-loaded SnO2 hollow microspheres exhibit relatively lower operating temperature, higher response and selectivity to toluene in comparison with that of pure SnO2. Besides structural merits of ultrathin nanorod-assembled hollow and porous structure, the promotion of sensing performances can also be attributed to the contribution of catalytic Pd particles. Boosting the High Gas Sensing Performance via Laser Embedding Schottky Heterointerfaces at Particle Boundaries in SnO 2 Nanofibers

Abstract:Metal oxide semiconductor-based gas sensors often require noble metals for modification to enhance the carrier mobility of the material. However, current noble metal modifications are almost always performed at the material surface, making it difficult to apply them to the particle boundaries (PBs) of the material, which can greatly reduce the utilization of noble metals. We herein synthesized Pt nanocrystals (NCs) with average size of 1 nm by the technology of pulsed laser irradiation, followed by in situ embedded at the PBs of SnO 2 nanofibers to address the unwanted carrier loss at PBs for substantially improved gas sensing. The Pt NCs/SnO 2 exhibited 2.23-fold enhancement of response values, and 2.86-fold improvement on selectivity for NO 2 at 50 o C, comparing to these samples without PBs engineering. Further analysis showed that the enhancement of the gas-sensitive performance is mainly due to the electronic and chemical sensitization of Pt NCs at the SnO 2 PBs and the high utilization of Pt NCs leading to a significant increase in the carrier mobility of the material. We thus believe present work provides an efficient alternative for developing high performance gas sensing based on materials with intrinsic particle boundaries.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) gas, with its high calorimetric combustion energy and cleanness, is a green source of energy and an alternative to fossil fuels. However, it has a small kinetic diameter, with high diffusivity and a highly explosive nature. Hence, the reliable detection of H2 gas is essential in various fields such as fuel cells. Herein, we decorated ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with Pd noble metal NPs, using UV irradiation to enhance their H2 gas-sensing performance. The synthesized materials were fully characterized in terms of their phases, morphologies, and chemical composition. Then, the sensing layer was deposited on the electrode-patterned glass substrate to make a transparent sensor. The fabricated transparent gas sensor was able to detect H2 gas at various temperatures and humidity levels. At 250 °C, the sensor exhibited the highest response to H2 gas. As a novelty of the present study, we successfully detected H2 gas in mixtures of H2/benzene and H2/toluene gases. The enhanced H2 gas response was related to the catalytic effect of Pd, the formation of heterojunctions between Pd and ZnO, the partial reduction of ZnO to Zn in the presence of H2 gas, and the formation of PdHx. With a high performance in a high response, good selectivity, and repeatability, we believe that the sensor developed in this study can be a good candidate for practical applications where the detection of H2 is necessary.

The Sensitizing Effect of Enhanced NO2 Gas Sensing at Near-Room Temperature Using Pd-Decorated VO2 Nanowires

Abstract:Modification of nanostructures using metal nanoparticles is an efficient strategy for enhancing the performance of gas sensing. In this paper, a VO 2 @Pd nanowires gas sensor was synthesized using a combination of hydrothermal and annealing methods. The content of Pd in the as-prepared products was successfully controlled by adjusting the reaction parameters. The morphology and formation mechanism of VO 2 nanostructures were systematically evaluated. The response value of VO 2 @Pd nanowires is 31.94 towards 5 ppm of NO 2 , which is about 38.75% higher than that of pristine VO 2 at a relatively low temperature of 50°C. Furthermore, the sensor exhibits good selectivity, excellent response/recovery time, and superior stability towards NO 2 . The significant enhancement of NO 2 sensing performance could be attributed to the electronic and chemical sensitization. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation suggests that both the adsorption energy and electron transfer between the VO 2 @Pd substrate and NO 2 molecules are optimized synergistically, leading to the improved sensitivity of the gas sensor. Importantly, the strong orbital hybridization between the NO 2 molecule and Pd atom is observed according to density of states (DOS), which is beneficial in selectively improving the NO 2 sensing performance of the VO 2 @Pd gas sensor.
