Abstract:With the help of the replica method and imaginary-time functional-integrate technique.. the spin glass model with the vibrations of crystal lattices is investigated. In the limit of the replica symmetric, and the imaginary-time static approximation, the magnetic and thermodynamic quantities have been obtained. By the numerical calculations. we found that the magnetization of the system has the typical spin-glass behaviour. A peak is found in the, susceptibility-temperature curve and is shifted to lower temperature with increasing applied field. Due to the lattice contribution, the specific heat increases strongly at high temperature. Due to the magnetic contribution the anomaly in the specific heat-temperature curve forms a lambda-type peak, which agrees with the observation of Rojo et al.

Abstract:Via Monte Carlo studies of the frustrated XY or classical planar model we demonstrate the possibility of a finite (nonzero) temperature spin/gauge glass phase in two dimensions. Examples of both periodic and quasiperiodic two dimensional lattices, where a high temperature paramagnetic phase changes to a spin/gauge glass phase with the lowering of temperature, are presented. The existence of the spin/gauge glass phase is substantiated by our study of the temperature dependence of the Edwards-Anderson order parameter, spin glass susceptibility, linear susceptibility and the specific heat. Finite size scaling analysis of spin glass susceptibility and order parameter yields a nonzero critical temperature and exponents that are in close agreement with those obtained by Bhatt and Young in their random ${\pm J}$ Ising model study on a square lattice. These results suggest that certain periodic and quasiperiodic two-dimensional arrays of superconducting grains in suitably chosen transverse magnetic fields should behave as superconducting glasses at low temperatures.

Abstract:We demonstrate numerically that for Ising spins on square lattices with ferromagnetic second neighbour interactions and random near neighbour interactions, two dimensional Ising spin glass order with a non-zero freezing temperature can occur. We compare some of the physical properties of these spin glasses with those of standard spin glasses in higher dimensions.

Abstract:We consider the spherical mixed $p$-spin models and investigate the structure of the Parisi measure at zero temperature. We prove that for the spherical spin models with $n$ components, the Parisi measure at zero temperature is at most $n$-RSB or $n$-FRSB. We also provide a necessary and sufficient computational criterion for the spherical mixed $p$-spin model to be $k$-RSB or $k$-FRSB, $k \leq n.$

Abstract:We review the main methods used to study spin glasses. In the first part, we focus on methods for fully connected models and systems defined on a tree, such as the replica method, the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer formalism, the cavity method, and the dynamical mean-field theory. In the second part, we deal with the description of low-dimensional systems, mostly in three spatial dimensions, which are mostly studied through numerical simulations. We conclude by mentioning some of the main open problems in the field.

Abstract:This paper studies spin glass to paramagnetic transition in the Spherical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model with ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss interaction with coupling constant $J$ and inverse temperature $\beta$. The disorder of the system is represented by a general Wigner matrix. We confirm a conjecture of \cite{Baik2016} and \cite{Baik2017}, that the critical window of temperatures for this transition is $\beta = 1 + bN^{-1/3} \sqrt{\log N}$ with $b\in\mathbb{R}$. The limiting distribution of the scaled free energy is Gaussian for negative $b$ and a weighted linear combination of independent Gaussian and Tracy-Widom components for positive $b$. In the special case where the Wigner matrix is from the Gaussian Orthogonal or Unitary Ensemble, we describe the triple point transition between spin glass, paramagnetic, and ferromagnetic regimes in a critical window for $(\beta, J)$ around the triple point $(1,1)$: the Tracy-Widom component is replaced by the one parameter family of deformations described by Bloemendal and Virag, \cite{BloVirI}.

Abstract:Within the wide class of disordered materials, spin glasses occupy a special place because of their conceptually simple definition of randomly interacting spins. Their modelling has triggered spectacular developments of out-of-equilibrium statistical physics, as well analytically as numerically, opening the way to a new vision of glasses in general. “Real” spin glasses are disordered magnetic materials which can be very diverse from the chemist’s point of view, but all share a number of common properties, laying down the definition of generic spin glass behavior. This paper aims at giving to nonspecialist readers an idea of what spin glasses are from an experimentalist’s point of view, describing as simply as possible their main features as they can be observed in the laboratory, referring to numerous detailed publications for more substantial discussions and for all theoretical developments, which are hardly sketched here. We strived to provide the readers who are interested in other glassy materials with some clues about the potential of spin glasses for improving their understanding of disordered matter. At least, arousing their curiosity for this fascinating subject will be considered a success.
Spin glass behavior of frustrated 2-D Penrose lattice in the classical planar model

Abstract:Via extensive Monte Carlo studies we show that the frustrated XY Hamiltonian on a 2-D Penrose lattice admits of a spin glass phase at low temperature. Studies of the Edwards-Anderson order parameter, spin glass susceptibility, and local (linear) susceptibility point unequivocally to a paramagnetic to spin glass transition as the temperature is lowered. Specific heat shows a rounded peak at a temperature above the spin glass transition temperature, as is commonly observed in spin glasses. Our results strongly suggest that the critical point exponents are the same as obtained by Bhatt and Young in the ${\pm}J$ Ising model on a square lattice. However, unlike in the latter case, the critical temperature is clearly finite (nonzero). The results imply that a quasiperiodic 2-D array of superconducting grains in a suitably chosen transverse magnetic field should behave as a superconducting glass at low temperature.

Abstract:We introduce some applications of Stein's method in the high temperature analysis of spin glasses. Stein's method allows the direct analysis of the Gibbs measure without having to create a cavity. Another advantage is that it gives limit theorems with total variation error bounds, although the bounds can be suboptimal. A surprising byproduct of our analysis is a relatively transparent explanation of the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer system of equations. Along the way, we develop Stein's method for mixtures of two Gaussian densities.

Abstract:In many mean-field glassy systems, the low-temperature Gibbs measure is dominated by exponentially many metastable states. We analyze the evolution of the metastable states as temperature changes adiabatically in the solvable case of the spherical s+p-spin glass model, extending the work of Barrat, Franz and Parisi J. Phys. A 30, 5593 (1997). We confirm the presence of level crossings, bifurcations, and temperature chaos. For the states that are at equilibrium close to the so-called dynamical temperature T_d, we find, however, that the following state method (and the dynamical solution of the model as well) is intrinsically limited by the vanishing of solutions with non-zero overlap at low temperature.

Abstract:We consider general mixed p -spin mean field spin glass models and provide a method to prove that the spectral gap of the Dirichlet form associated with the Gibbs measure is of order one at sufficiently high temperature. Our proof is based on an iteration scheme relating the spectral gap of the N -spin system to that of suitably conditioned subsystems.

Abstract:Abstract This article reviews the 40+ year old spin-glass field and one of its earliest model interpretations as a spin density wave. Our description is from an experimental phenomenological point of view with emphasis on new spin glass materials and their relation to topical problems and strongly correlated materials in condensed matter physics. We first simply define a spin glass (SG), give its basic ingredients and explain how the spin glasses enter into the statistical mechanics of classical phase transitions. We then consider the four basic experimental properties to solidly characterize canonical spin glass behavior and introduce the early theories and models. Here the spin density wave (SDW) concept is used to explain the difference between a short-range SDW, i.e. a SG and, in contrast, a long-range SDW, i.e. a conventional magnetic phase transition. We continue with the present state of SG, its massive computer simulations and recent proposals of chiral glasses and quantum SG. We then collect and mention the various SG ‘spin-off’s'. A major section uncovers the fashionable unconventional materials that display SG-like freezing and glassy ground states, such as (high temperature) superconductors, heavy fermions, intermetallics and Heuslers, pyrochlor and spinels, oxides and chalogenides and exotics, e.g. quasicrystals. Some conclusions and future directions complete the review.

Abstract:This review presents various aspects of a mean-field spin glass model known as the p-spin spherical spin glass model, which has raised a lot of interest in the study of spin glasses, and also for its possible links with a mean-field theory of structural glasses. This preprint contains no new results and is therefore not intended to be published, but its aim is to present a collection of results and formulas concerning this very rich model. It is in fact the english translation of one of the chapters of my PhD thesis (``Quelques aspects de la dynamique hors d'equilibre des verres de spin'', ``Some aspects of the out of equilibrium dynamics of spin glasses''). Abstract:The p-spin spin-glass model has been studied extensively at mean-field level because of the insights which it provides into the mode-coupling approach to structural glasses and the nature of the glass transition. We demonstrate explicitly that the finite dimensional version of the p-spin model is in the same universality class as an Ising spin glass in a magnetic field. Assuming that the droplet picture of Ising spin glasses is valid we discuss how this universality may provide insights into why structural glasses are either "fragile" or "strong".

Abstract:Spin glasses are a longstanding model for the sluggish dynamics that appear at the glass transition. However, spin glasses differ from structural glasses in a crucial feature: they enjoy a time reversal symmetry. This symmetry can be broken by applying an external magnetic field, but embarrassingly little is known about the critical behavior of a spin glass in a field. In this context, the space dimension is crucial. Simulations are easier to interpret in a large number of dimensions, but one must work below the upper critical dimension (i.e., in d < 6) in order for results to have relevance for experiments. Here we show conclusive evidence for the presence of a phase transition in a four-dimensional spin glass in a field. Two ingredients were crucial for this achievement: massive numerical simulations were carried out on the Janus special-purpose computer, and a new and powerful finite-size scaling method.
The quantum $p$-spin glass model: A user manual for holographers

Abstract:We study a large-$N$ bosonic quantum mechanical sigma-model with a spherical target space subject to disordered interactions, more colloquially known as the $p$-spin spherical model. Replica symmetry is broken at low temperatures and for sufficiently weak quantum fluctuations, which drives the system into a spin glass phase. The first half of this paper is dedicated to a discussion of this model's thermodynamics, with particular emphasis on the marginally stable spin glass. This phase exhibits an emergent conformal symmetry in the strong coupling regime, which dictates its thermodynamic properties. It is associated with an extensive number of nearby states in the free energy landscape. We discuss in detail an elegant approximate solution to the spin glass equations, which interpolates between the conformal regime and an ultraviolet-complete short distance solution. In the second half of this paper we explore the real-time dynamics of the model and uncover quantum chaos as measured by out-of-time-order four-point functions, both numerically and analytically. We find exponential Lyapunov growth, which intricately depends on the model's couplings and becomes strongest in the quantum critical regime. We emphasize that the spin glass phase also exhibits quantum chaos, albeit with parametrically smaller Lyapunov exponent than in the replica symmetric phase. An analytical calculation in the marginal spin glass phase suggests that this Lyapunov exponent vanishes in a particular infinite coupling limit. We comment on the potential meaning of these observations from the perspective of holography.

Quantum Fluctuations of a Nearly Critical Heisenberg Spin Glass

Abstract:We describe the interplay of quantum and thermal fluctuations in the infinite-range Heisenberg spin glass. This model is generalized to SU(N) symmetry, and we describe the phase diagram as a function of the spin S and the temperature T. The model is solved in the large N limit and certain universal critical properties are shown to hold to all orders in 1/N. For large S, the ground state is a spin glass, but quantum effects are crucial in determining the low T thermodynamics: we find a specific heat linear in T and a local spectral density of spin excitations linear in frequency for a spin glass state which is marginally stable to fluctuations in the replicon modes. For small S, the spin-glass order is fragile, and a spin-liquid state dominates the properties over a significant range of temperatures and frequencies. We argue that the latter state may be relevant in understanding the properties of strongly-disordered transition metal and rare earth compounds.

Abstract:Based on the replica method and the imaginary time functional-integral technique, we investigate the infinite-range quantum Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin glass model. It is found that the quantum Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin glass model behaves in a Heisenberg-like manner. The specific heat has the crossover behaviour. The broad Maximum in specific heat is shifted to higher temperature with increasing applied field. These features are in good agreement with the observation of Brodale et al. [J. Magn. Magn. Matter. 31-34 (1983) 1331] The susceptibility of the system has the typical spin glass feature.
On spin distributions for generic p-spin models

Abstract:We provide an alternative formula for spin distributions of generic p-spin glass models. As a main application of this expression, we write spin statistics as solutions of partial differential equations and we show that the generic p-spin models satisfy multiscale Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equations as originally predicted in the work of Mezard-Virasoro.

Abstract:The study of spin-glass dynamics, long considered the paradigmatic complex system, has reached important milestones. The availability of high-quality single crystals has allowed the experimental measurement of spin-glass coherence lengths of almost macroscopic dimensions, while the advent of special-purpose massive computers enables dynamical simulations that approach experimental time and length scales. This review provides an account of the quantitative convergence of these two avenues of research, with precise experimental measurements of the expected scaling laws and numerical reproduction of classic experimental results, such as memory and rejuvenation. The article opens with a brief review of the defining spin-glass properties, randomness and frustration, and their experimental consequences. These apparently simple characteristics are shown to generate rich and complex physics. Models are introduced that enable quantitative descriptions. After a summary of the main numerical results in equilibrium, paying particular attention to the concept of temperature chaos, this review examines off-equilibrium dynamics in the absence of a magnetic field and shows how it can be related to equilibrium structures through the fluctuation-dissipation relations. The nonlinear response at a given temperature is then developed, including experiments and scaling in the vicinity of the transition temperature $T_\mathrm{g}$. The consequences of temperature change -- including temperature chaos, rejuvenation, and memory -- are reviewed. The interpretation of these phenomena requires identifying several length scales relevant to dynamics, which, in turn, generate new insights. Finally, issues for future investigations are introduced, including what is to be nailed down theoretically, why the Ising Edwards-Anderson model is so successful at modeling spin-glass dynamics, and experiments yet to be undertaken.
