Abstract:This paper investigates the joint source-channel coding problem of sending a memoryless source over a memoryless broadcast channel. An inner bound and several outer bounds on the admissible distortion region are derived, which, respectively, generalize and unify several existing bounds. As a consequence, we also obtain an inner bound and an outer bound for the degraded broadcast channel case. When specialized to the Gaussian or binary source broadcast, the inner bound and outer bound not only recover the best known inner bound and outer bound in the literature but also generate some new results. Besides, we also extend the inner bound and outer bounds to the Wyner-Ziv source broadcast problem, i.e., source broadcast with side information available at decoders. Some new bounds are obtained when specialized to the Wyner-Ziv Gaussian and Wyner-Ziv binary cases.

Abstract:We establish a new outer bound for the capacity region of product broadcast channels. This outer bound matches Marton's inner bound for a variety of classes of product broadcast channels whose capacity regions were previously unknown. These classes include product of reversely semi-deterministic and product of reversely more-capable channels. A significant consequence of this new outer bound is that it establishes, via an example, that the previously best known outer-bound is strictly suboptimal for the general broadcast channel. Our example is comprised of a product broadcast channel with two semi-deterministic components in reverse orientation.

Abstract:We derive a new outer bound on the capacity region of broadcast traffic in multiple input broadcast packet erasure channels with feedback, and extend this outer bound to packet erasure relay networks with feedback. We show the tightness of the outer bound for various classes of networks. An important engineering implication of this work is that for network coding schemes for parallel broadcast channels, the `xor' packets should be sent over correlated broadcast subchannels.

Abstract:In this paper, we study capacity bounds for discrete memoryless broadcast channels with confidential messages. Two private messages as well as a common message are transmitted; the common message is to be decoded by both receivers, while each private message is only for its intended receiver. In addition, each private message is to be kept secret from the unintended receiver where secrecy is measured by equivocation. We propose both inner and outer bounds to the rate equivocation region for broadcast channels with confidential messages. The proposed inner bound generalizes Csiszár and Körner's rate equivocation region for broadcast channels with a single confidential message, Liu {\em et al}'s achievable rate region for broadcast channels with perfect secrecy, Marton's and Gel'fand and Pinsker's achievable rate region for general broadcast channels. Our proposed outer bounds, together with the inner bound, helps establish the rate equivocation region of several classes of discrete memoryless broadcast channels with confidential messages, including less noisy, deterministic, and semi-deterministic channels. Furthermore, specializing to the general broadcast channel by removing the confidentiality constraint, our proposed outer bounds reduce to new capacity outer bounds for the discrete memory broadcast channel.

Abstract:The celebrated Blahut–Arimoto algorithm computes the capacity of a discrete memoryless point-to-point channel by alternately maximizing the objective function of a maximization problem. This algorithm has been applied to degraded broadcast channels, in which the supporting hyperplanes of the capacity region are again cast as maximization problems. In this work, we consider general broadcast channels and extend this algorithm to compute inner and outer bounds on the capacity regions. Our main contributions are as follows: first, we show that the optimization problems are max–min problems and that the exchange of minimum and maximum holds; second, we design Blahut–Arimoto algorithms for the maximization part and gradient descent algorithms for the minimization part; third, we provide convergence analysis for both parts. Numerical experiments validate the effectiveness of our algorithms.

Capacity Bounds for Broadcast Channels with Bidirectional Conferencing Decoders

Abstract:The two-user broadcast channel (BC) with receivers connected by cooperative links of given capacities, known as conferencing decoders, is considered. A novel outer bound on the capacity region is established. This outer bound is derived using multiple applications of the Csiszár-Körner identity. New achievable rate regions are also presented. A first achievable rate region is derived by applying Marton's coding as the transmission scheme, and quantize-bin-and-forward at one receiver first and then a combination of decode-and-forward and quantize-bin-and-forward at the other receiver as cooperative strategy. A second achievable rate region is given by applying a combination of decode-and-forward and quantize-bin-and-forward at one receiver first and then quantize-bin-and-forward at the other receiver. It is proved that the outer bound coincides with the first achievable rate region for a class of semi-deterministic BCs with degraded message sets. This is the first capacity result for the two-user BC with bidirectional conferencing decoders. A capacity result is also derived for a new class of more capable semi-deterministic BCs with both common and private messages and one-sided conferencing. For the Gaussian BC with conferencing decoders, if the noises at the decoders are fully correlated (i.e., the correlation is either 1 or -1), the new outer bound yields exact capacity region for two cases: i) BC with degraded message sets; ii) BC with one-sided conferencing from the weaker receiver to the stronger receiver. An interesting consequence of these results is that for a Gaussian BC with fully negatively correlated noises and conferencing decoders of fixed cooperation link capacities, it is possible to achieve a positive rate bounded away from zero using only infinitesimal amount of transmit power.

Abstract:Recently, Tian et al. [1] considered joint source-channel coding of transmitting a Gaussian source over K-user Gaussian broadcast channel, and derived an outer bound on the admissible distortion region. In [1], they stated “due to its nonlinear form, it appears difficult to determine whether it is always looser than the trivial outer bound in all distortion regimes with bandwidth compression”. However, in this correspondence we solve this problem and prove that for the bandwidth expansion case (with K ≥ 2), this outer bound is strictly tighter than the trivial outer bound with each user being optimal in the point-to-point setting; while for the bandwidth compression or bandwidth match case, this outer bound actually degenerates to the trivial outer bound. Therefore, our results imply that on one hand, the outer bound given in [1] is nontrivial only for Gaussian broadcast communication (K ≥ 2) with bandwidth expansion; on the other hand, unfortunately, no nontrivial outer bound exists so far for Gaussian broadcast communication (K ≥ 2) with bandwidth compression.
Capacity Results for Non-Ergodic Multi-Modal Broadcast Channels with Controllable Statistics

Abstract:Movable antennas and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces enable a new paradigm in which channel statistics can be controlled and altered. Further, the known trajectory and operation protocol of communication satellites results in networks with predictable statistics. The predictability of future changes results in a non-ergodic model for which the fundamentals are largely unknown. We consider the canonical two-user broadcast erasure channel in which channel statistics vary at a priori known points. We consider a multi-modal setting with two non-transient modes (whose lengths scale linearly with the blocklength) and an arbitrary number of transient modes. We provide a new set of outer-bounds on the capacity region of this problem when the encoder has access to causal ACK/NACK feedback. The outer-bounds reveal the significant role of the non-transient mode with higher erasure probability both on the outer and the inner bounds. We show the outer-bounds are achievable in non-trivial regimes, characterizing the capacity region for a wide range of parameters. We also discuss the regimes where the inner and outer bounds diverge and analyze the gap between the two. A key finding of this work is the significant gain of inter-modal coding over the separate treating of individual modes.

Abstract:From the perspective of secure communication, we study transmitting confidential messages in broadcast channel with action-dependent states. Transmitter aims to convey a common message to both receiver 1 and 2, and a confidential message only to receiver 1. It can take actions to affect the generation of channel states which are causally known to the encoder. The inner and outer bounds on the capacity-equivocation region of such a channel are characterized. The corresponding bounds on the secrecy capacity are also obtained. To achieve the rate-equivocation triples, we construct coding schemes using superposition coding and Wyner's random binning. For the special case where no common message is sent, the inner and outer bounds coincide with each other. A binary example is given to illustrate the results.

Abstract:The compound broadcast channel models the situation where each receiver has a number of possible realizations and its message is to be decoded regardless of the actual realization. Weingarten et al. established the capacity region for the two-user degraded case where the realizations exhibit a degradedness order defined through a fictitious receiver.In this paper, we consider a K-receiver degraded compound broadcast channel where, instead of specifying fictitious receivers, the receivers exhibit a pair-wise degradedness order, i.e., each realization from a weaker receiver is stochastically degraded with respect to each realization from a stronger receiver. There is a restriction on the number of possible realizations for all the receivers to two.We first prove the capacity region for this discrete memoryless class of broadcast channels. The achievability follows readily from superposition coding and successive decoding. To facilitate the proof of the converse, we give an alternative characterization of the achievable rate region. The main contribution in this paper is to bypass the use of the Csiszar-sum lemma in order to prove the converse for an arbitrary number of receivers. We also make use of our converse proof as well as Geng and Nair's technique to prove an extremal entropy inequality. This is then finally used to prove the capacity region of the equivalent class of K receiver aligned Gaussian MIMO degraded compound broadcast channels.

Abstract:We investigate the Gaussian broadcast channel with heterogeneous finite blocklength constraints (HB-GBC), which models different latency requirements for different users. To derive an outer bound on the rate region, we introduce a novel way of applying a Sato-type outer bound in the finite blocklength regime, since Sato’s classical outer bound is not directly applicable. To derive the achievable rate region, we present a way to use shell codes, which are second-order optimal for the single-user case, in the HB-GBC. We apply our technique to a hybrid TDMA/NOMA approach as well as early decoding, which is a technique that performs successive interference cancellation with an incompletely received interference codeword. Our numerical results show that the range of power allocations where early decoding is feasible is significantly enlarged compared to the state-of-the-art, leading to considerably improved rates in the regime where rate fairness between users is the goal. This makes early decoding a promising technique to increase the rates and fairness when strict latency constraints have to be met.

Abstract:Weingarten et al. established the capacity region for the two-user degraded compound broadcast channel where the realizations of each user exhibit a certain degradedness order. The degradedness order is defined through an additional fictitious user whose channel is stochastically degraded with respect to each realization from one set (the stronger receiver) while each realization from the other set (the weaker receiver) is stochastically degraded with respect to him. Rather than specifying a fictitious user, we consider a two-user degraded compound broadcast channel which is pair-wise degraded, i.e., each realization from the weaker receiver is stochastically degraded with respect to each realization from the stronger receiver.In this paper, we first prove the capacity region for a discrete memoryless class of this broadcast channels where the weaker receiver has only two possible realizations while there is an arbitrary number of possible realizations for the stronger receiver. Next, we consider the equivalent class of degraded compound MIMO Gaussian broadcast channels. To show that Gaussian inputs attain the capacity region, we prove a new extremal entropy inequality using a technique recently introduced by Geng and Nair that was used to resolve the capacity region of the two-user MIMO Gaussian broadcast channel with common and private information.

Abstract:The action-dependent states (ADSs) in wiretap channel is revisited. The transmitter aims to convey a confidential message to the receiver and protect it from the wiretapper as possible as he can. Actions are taken by the transmitter to influence the channel state information. For such a channel, Dai et al. first got an outer bound on the capacity-equivocation region which contains all the achievable transmission rates. We find a new outer bound and prove it is better than Dai's in terms of approximating the maximum rate at which the confidential message can be transmitted in perfect secrecy. Furthermore, the new outer bound provides the engineer with a more precise target to achieve higher transmission rates in the capacity-equivocation region.

Abstract:We consider a broadcast channel with three receivers and three-degraded message sets, where the transmitter has a common message intended for all three receivers, a message intended for receivers 2 and 3, and a private message intended for receiver 3. The messages are transmitted over a family of parallel degraded broadcast channels. In the most general case, there are six parallel degraded broadcast channels with different orders of degradedness. We determine the capacity region for two classes of broadcast channels, one with five parallel degraded broadcast channels and the other with three parallel degraded broadcast channels. The main difficulty is in identifying the relevant auxiliary random variables in the proofs of the converse. To accomplish this, we make use of an information theoretic inequality that can be proven using the Csiszár-sum identity.

Abstract:The capacity of a wireless network has been widely studied in the literature, including the capacity for unicast and the capacity for broadcast. In this paper we studied the capacity of a wireless network for broadcast, Previous studies on broadcast capacity either assume that all links in the wireless network has the same channel capacity, or assume that the transmission ranges of a wireless node can be arbitrarily large. In this paper we derive analytical upper bounds and lower bounds on broadcast capacity of a wireless network when all nodes in the network has the same bounded transmission power P and all nodes are placed in a square of side-length a. When the fixed data rate channel is used (each node can send W bits/second to nodes within its transmission range if no interference happened), we prove that the broadcast capacity is Theta(W) under the physical interference model.When the Gaussian channel capacity is used, we show that the total broadcast capacity is only Theta((a root logn/n)(-beta)) when a root logn/n -> infinity. When a root logn/n -> O(1), we show that the broadcast capacity is Theta(1). We also generalize our results to multicast capacity for physical interference model.

Abstract:In this letter, we revisit the non-restricted half-duplex Gaussian amplify-and-forward two-way relay channel (AF-TWRC). The inner and outer bounds of its capacity region are derived by evaluating Shannon's inner and outer bounds for general two-way channels. We prove that, in contrast to the case of Gaussian two-way channel (GTWC) where the two bounds coincide thus establishing its capacity region, the two bounds of AF-TWRC do not coincide unless both terminals are noise-free, due to that the intermediate relay node introduces additional power constraint relating to the correlation of channel inputs from both terminals. This indicates that the capacity region of non-restricted Gaussian AF-TWRC, which was previously believed to be already established in a way similar to that of GTWC, still remains open. We further investigate a special case of non-restricted AF-TWRC where the relay is noise-free, and obtain its capacity region based on the tighter dependence balance bound.
On the Capacity Region of Optical Intensity Broadcast Channels

Abstract:This paper investigates the capacity region of the optical intensity broadcast channels (OI-BCs), where the input is subject to a peak-intensity constraint, an average-intensity constraint, or both. By leveraging the decomposition results of several random variables, i.e., uniform, exponential, and truncated exponential random variables, and adopting a superposition coding (SC) scheme, the inner bound on the capacity region is derived. Then, the outer bound is derived by applying the conditional entropy power inequality (EPI). In the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, the inner bound asymptotically matches the outer bound, thus characterizing the high-SNR asymptotic capacity region. The bounds are also extended to the general K-user BCs without loss of high-SNR asymptotic optimality.

Abstract:Kulkarni and Kiyavash recently introduced a new method to establish upper bounds on the size of deletion-correcting codes. This method is based upon tools from hypergraph theory. The deletion channel is represented by a hypergraph whose edges are the deletion balls (or spheres), so that a deletion-correcting code becomes a matching in this hypergraph. Consequently, a bound on the size of such a code can be obtained from bounds on the matching number of a hypergraph. Classical results in hypergraph theory are then invoked to compute an upper bound on the matching number as a solution to a linear-programming problem. The method by Kulkarni and Kiyavash can be applied not only for the deletion channel but also for other error channels. This paper studies this method in its most general setup. First, it is shown that if the error channel is regular and symmetric then this upper bound coincides with the sphere packing bound and thus is called the generalized sphere packing bound. Even though this bound is explicitly given by a linear programming problem, finding its exact value may still be a challenging task. In order to simplify the complexity of the problem, we present a technique based upon graph automorphisms that in many cases reduces the number of variables and constraints in the problem. We then apply this method on specific examples of error channels. We start with the $Z$ channel and show how to exactly find the generalized sphere packing bound for this setup. Next studied is the non-binary limited magnitude channel both for symmetric and asymmetric errors, where we focus on the single-error case. We follow up on the deletion and grain-error channels and show how to improve upon the existing upper bounds for single deletion/error. Finally, we apply this method for projective spaces and find its generalized sphere packing bound for the single-error case.
