Abstract:We introduce the concepts of rotation numbers and rotation vectors for billiard maps. Our approach is based on the birkhoff ergodic theorem. We anticipate that it will be useful, in particular, for the purpose of establishing the non-ergodicity of billiard in certain domains.

Abstract:Orbital invariants of integrable billiards on two-dimensional book tables are studied at constant energy values. These invariants are calculated from rotation functions defined on one-parameter families of Liouville 2-tori. For two-dimensional billiard books, a complete analogue of Liouville's theorem is proved, action–angle variables are introduced, and rotation functions are defined. A general formula for the rotation functions of such systems is obtained. For a number of examples, the monotonicity of these functions is studied, and edge orbital invariants (rotation vectors) are calculated. It turned out that not all billiards have monotonic rotation functions, as was originally assumed by A. Fomenko's hypothesis. However, for some series of billiards, this hypothesis is true.

Abstract:Translation and rotation numbers have played an interesting and important role in the qualitative description of various dynamical systems. In this exposition we are especially interested in applications which lead to proofs of periodic motions in various kinds of dynamics on the annulus. The applications include billiards and geodesic flows. Going beyond this simple qualitative invariant in the study of the dynamics of area preserving annulus maps, G.D. Birkhoff was led to the concept of “regions of instability” for twist maps. We discuss the closely related notion of instability sets for a generic area preserving surface diffeomorphism and develop their properties.

Bouncing Outer Billiards

Abstract:We introduce a new class of billiard-like system, ``bouncing outer billiards" which are 3-dimensional cousins of outer billiards of Neumann and Moser. We prove that bouncing outer billiard on a smooth convex body has at least four 1-parameter families of fixed points. We also fully describe dynamics of bouncing outer billiard on a line segment. Finally we carry out numerical experiments suggesting very complicated (non-ergodic) behavior for several shapes including the square and an ellipse.

Abstract:Ivrii's Conjecture states that in every billiard in Euclidean space the set of periodic orbits has measure zero. It implies that for every $k\geq2$ there are no k-reflective billiards, i.e., billiards having an open set of k-periodic orbits. This conjecture is open in Euclidean spaces, with just few partial results. It is known that in the two-dimensional sphere there exist 3-reflective billiards (Yu.M.Baryshnikov). All the 3-reflective spherical billiards were classified in a paper by V.Blumen, K.Kim, J.Nance, V.Zharnitsky: the boundary of each of them lies in three orthogonal big circles. In the present paper we study the analogue of Ivrii's Conjecture for projective billiards introduced by S.Tabachnikov. In two dimensions there exists a 3-reflective projective billiard, the so-called right-spherical billiard, which is the projection of a spherical 3-reflective billiard. We show that the only 3-reflective planar projective billiard with piecewise smooth boundary is the above-mentioned right-spherical billiard. In higher dimensions, we prove the non-existence of 3-reflective projective billiards with piecewise smooth boundary, and also the non-existence of projective billiards with piecewise smooth boundary having a subset of triangular orbits of non-zero measure in the phase space.
Boltzmann's Billiard Systems: Computation of the Billiard Mapping and Some Numerical Results

Abstract:L. Boltzmann proposed a billiard model with a planar central force problem reflected against a line not passing through the center. He asserted that such a system is ergodic, which thus illustrates his ergodic hypothesis. However, it has been recently shown that when the underlying central force problem is the Kepler problem then the system is actually integrable by Gallavotti-Jauslin. This raises the question of whether Boltzmann's assertion holds true for some central force problems that he considered. In this paper, we present some geometrical and numerical analysis on the dynamics of several of these systems. As indicated by the numerics, many of these systems show chaotic dynamics and a system seems to be ergodic.

Periodic orbits for square and rectangular billiards

Abstract:Mathematical billiards is much like the real game: a point mass, representing the ball, rolls in a straight line on a (perfectly friction-less) table, striking the sides according to the law of reflection. A billiard trajectory is then completely characterised by the number of elastic collisions. The rules of mathematical billiards may be simple, but the possible behaviours of billiard trajectories are endless. In fact, several fundamental theory questions in mathematics can be recast as billiards problems. A billiard trajectory is called a periodic orbit if the number of distinct collisions in the trajectory is finite. We classify all possible periodic orbits on square and rectangular tables. We show that periodic orbits on such billiard tables cannot have an odd number of distinct collisions. We also present a connection between the number of different classes of periodic orbits and Euler's totient function, which for any integer $N$ counts how many integers smaller than $N$ share no common divisor with $N$ other than $1$. We explore how to construct periodic orbits with a prescribed (even) number of distinct collisions, and investigate properties of inadmissible (singular) trajectories, which are trajectories that eventually terminate at a vertex (a table corner).

Abstract:We define a new class of plane billiards - the `pensive billiard' - in which the billiard ball travels along the boundary for some distance depending on the incidence angle before reflecting, while preserving the billiard rule of equality of the angles of incidence and reflection. This generalizes so called `puck billiards' proposed by M.Bialy, as well as a `vortex billiard', i.e. the motion of a point vortex dipole in 2D hydrodynamics on domains with boundary. We prove the variational origin and invariance of a symplectic structure for pensive billiards, as well as study their properties including conditions for a twist map, the existence of periodic orbits, etc. We also demonstrate the appearance of both the golden and silver ratios in the corresponding hydrodynamical vortex setting. Finally, we introduce and describe basic properties of pensive outer billiards.

Abstract:This work presents a framework for billiards in convex domains on two dimensional Riemannian manifolds. These domains are contained in connected, simply connected open subsets which are totally normal. In this context, some properties that have long been known for billiards on the plane are established. We prove the twist property of the billiard maps and establish some conditions for the existence and non-existence of rotational invariant curves. Although we prove that Lazutkin's and Hubacher's theorems are valid for general surfaces, we also find that Mather's theorem does not apply to surfaces of non-negative curvature.

A new perspective of arithmetic billiards

Abstract:We study the problem of arithmetic billiards from a new perspective. We first raise a similar problem about reflecting lights inside grids, and give two solutions to this problem. Next, we consider a similar problem in plane grids and give its solution. Moreover, we extend this two problems to $p$-dimensional space, where $p\geq2$. In this process, we introduce two mappings about finite discrete sets, and get two finite abelian groups. In addition, we give the definition of circular sequences and consider some combinatorial properties of circular sequences.

Existence and Nonexistence of Invariant Curves of Coin Billiards

Abstract:In this paper we consider the coin billiards introduced by M. Bialy. It is a family of maps of the annulus $\mathbb A = \mathbb T \times (0,\pi)$ given by the composition of the classical billiard map on a convex planar table $\Gamma$ with the geodesic flow on the lateral surface of a cylinder (coin) of given height having as bases two copies of $\Gamma$. We prove the following three main theorems: in two different scenarios (when the height of the coin is small, or when the coin is near-circular) there is a family of KAM curves close to, but not accumulating on, the boundary $\partial \mathbb A$; for any non-circular coin, if the height of the coin is sufficiently large, there is a neighbourhood of $\partial \mathbb A$ through which there passes no invariant essential curve; for many noncircular coins, there are Birkhoff zones of instability. These results provide partial answers to questions of Bialy. Finally, we describe the results of some numerical experiments on the elliptical coin billiard.

Abstract:We study the geometry of billiard orbits on rectangular billiards. A truncated billiard orbit induces a partition of the rectangle into polygons. We prove that thirteen is a sharp upper bound for the number of different areas of these polygons.

Abstract:The famous conjecture of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://V.Ya.Ivrii" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> (1978) says that {\it in every billiard with infinitely-smooth boundary in a Euclidean space the set of periodic orbits has measure zero}. In the present paper we study the complex version of Ivrii's conjecture for odd-periodic orbits in planar billiards, with reflections from complex analytic curves. We prove positive answer in the following cases: 1) triangular orbits; 2) odd-periodic orbits in the case, when the mirrors are algebraic curves avoiding two special points at infinity, the so-called isotropic points. We provide immediate applications to the real piecewise-algebraic Ivrii's conjecture and to its analogue in the invisibility theory.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new dynamical system which we call Angular billiard. It acts on the exterior points of a convex curve in Euclidean plane. In a neighborhood of the boundary curve this system turns out to be dual to the Birkhoff billiard. Using this system we get new results on algebraic Birkhoff conjecture on integrable billiards.

Abstract:Given a random map (T_1, T_2, T_3, T_4, p_1, p_2, p_3, p_4), we define a random billiard map on a surface of constant curvature (Euclidean plane, hyperbolic plane, or the sphere). The Liouville measure is invariant for this billiard map. Finally, we show some dynamical properties such as ergodicity in the case of random circular billiards.

Abstract:The billiard table is modeled as an $n$-dimensional box $[0,a_1]\times [0,a_2]\times \ldots \times [0,a_n] \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, with each side having real-valued lengths $a_i$ that are pairwise commensurable. A ball is launched from the origin in direction $d=(1,1,\ldots,1)$. The ball is reflected if it hits the boundary of the billiard table. It comes to a halt when reaching a corner. We show that the number of intersections of the billiard curve at any given point on the table is either $0$ or a power of $2$. To prove this, we use algebraic and number theoretic tools to establish a bijection between the number of intersections of the billiard curve and the number of satisfying assignments of a specific constraint satisfaction problem.

Abstract:We consider a billiard problem for compact domains bounded by confocal conics on a hyperboloid of one sheet in the Minkowski space. We show that there are two types of confocal families in such setting. Using an algebro-geometric integration technique, we prove that the billiard within generalized ellipses of each type is integrable in the sense of Liouville. Further, we prove a generalization of the Poncelet theorem and derive Cayley-type conditions for periodic trajectories and explore geometric consequences.
