Abstract:A lack of standards and regulations for handling digital evidence is impeding its admissibility in court proceedings. This article addresses the challenges of digital forensics in criminal investigations due to the rise of cybercrime. The literature existing studies on digital forensics, legal frameworks, and cybercrime is reviewed in order to find possible solutions. The results demonstrate the importance of collaboration between the legal and technological sectors in developing standardized norms and processes for digital evidence collection and processing. The findings also highlight the importance of digital forensics in criminal investigations and the need for a robust legal framework to combat cybercrime effectively. This note emphasizes the vital significance of digital forensics in criminal investigations and the need to develop standardized rules and procedures for the management of digital evidence. The recommendations presented in this article may assist policymakers and law enforcement authorities in designing legal framework capable of effectively confronting cybercrime.

Abstract:Digital forensics in smart environments is an emerging field that deals with the investigation and analysis of digital evidence in smart devices and environments. At the same time, recent advancements in digital forensic tools and techniques offer promising solutions to overcome these challenges. In this survey, we examine recent advancements and challenges in digital forensics within smart environments. Specifically, we review the current state-of-the-art techniques and tools for digital forensics in smart environments and discuss their strengths and limitations. We also identify the major challenges that digital forensic investigators face in smart environments and propose potential solutions to overcome these challenges. Abstract:The development of information security issues in many sectors makes the skill of mastering digital forensic highly needed. Digital forensic is recently used not only to support legal proceedings but also to investigate many incidents like digital data manipulation, site hacking, and terrorism. In mastering the skill of digital forensic, investigators should have knowledge about the techniques and tools that will be used. This research is proposed to help investigators in enhancing and developing their skills in revealing the content of digital evidence with the result reviews from each area in the forensic field. The review in this study is based on the focus of the forensic area by giving detailed information about the functions, limitations, and advantages as well as the specific techniques of forensics that leads to the techniques of live forensic or static forensic. This research also discusses the non-technical things that affect the performance of forensic investigation including operational activities, investigated activities, and legal elements. Thus, the result of this research is expected to be beneficial for helping investigators in determining the appropriate tools to investigate the digital evidence. The further research can develop the activities of anti-forensics that can hinder the investigation processes.

Abstract:Digital transformation rapidly changes how we live our lives in the post pandemic world. Unfortunately, digital technology is not limited to law abiding organisations and citizens. Criminal organisations and individuals are quick to identify new opportunities with new technologies, and digital transformation is dramatically changing the character of crimes, terror, and other threats. The fast emergence of new crimes is facilitated by possibilities brought by disruptive technologies such as AI, Internet of Things, drones, and cryptocurrencies that can be disastrous tools in the hands of criminals. Consequently, our society needs far better capacity to prevent and investigate criminal acts to protect organisations and citizens. This brings an urgent need to proactively reform digital forensics to significantly increase our capability to meet the strain on society brought by crimes evolving in the digital transformation era. The future of forensic science is already here, characterized by a mix of opportunities and challenges. It is essential to make it harder to effectively use digital technologies for criminal activities, while leveraging the possibilities of digital technologies by those affected, law enforcement agencies, business and organisations. As digital technologies continue to evolve, we need to stay up to date with the latest developments to effectively investigate and prosecute crimes in the digital age. There is an increased reliance on digital evidence, and the amount of heterogeneous digital evidence in criminal cases keep increasing. The forensic science techniques thus become more sophisticated and play an increasingly important role. However, the scientific area is extremely broad, and beyond the capability of most forensic science labs to keep up with the technology forefront development speed. Besides an urgent need to bring up the subject to the political arena, examples of how we can meet the challenges are discussed such as by extending our cooperation, encourage and facilitate cooperation for training and education to handle the extremely broad and rapid development, working out methods for explaining and visualising evidence for the treatment and legal values of digital evidence in prosecution, and cooperation between product developers and crime investigators for swift innovation of digital forensics tools and methodologies for quickly emerging threats. Abstract:This study aims to address the growing cyber threats and the spread of digital misinformation, particularly intensified by digital transformation during the COVID-19 pandemic. It seeks to explore the evolving role of digital forensics (DF) in ensuring cybersecurity and misinformation control, with implications for societal stability and progress. By utilizing bibliometric and content analysis, we examined the landscape of 3608 DF publications from 2013 to 2023 drawn from the Scopus database. The analysis included bibliometric indicators, open access trends, author collaboration patterns, influential publications, and the geographical distribution of contributions. The decade has seen significant growth in DF research, with open access publications increasing from 25% in 2013 to 34.5% in 2023. Notably, a gender gap exists, with male researchers predominantly leading (82%). International collaborations have surged in areas such as forensic engineering and the Internet of Things (IoT). Three primary thematic clusters were identified: computer forensics, multimedia forensics, and cloud network forensics. Remarkably, DF research contributes to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), followed by SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). By highlighting the strategic integration of DF with SDGs, this study underscores DF's critical role in promoting just and secure societies, sustainable economic growth, and the resilience of industrial and energy infrastructures against cyber threats. DF is advocated for its proactive use in policy-making, urban development, and infrastructure protection to enhance the impact of the SDGs. This holistic approach positions DF not only as a tool for crime investigation but also as a fundamental component in advancing cybersecurity and energy policy, contributing to the broader goals of sustainable development and societal resilience.

Abstract:Given the ever-increasing prevalence of technology in modern life, there is a corresponding increase in the likelihood of digital devices being pertinent to a criminal investigation or civil litigation. As a direct consequence, the number of investigations requiring digital forensic expertise is resulting in huge digital evidence backlogs being encountered by law enforcement agencies throughout the world. It can be anticipated that the number of cases requiring digital forensic analysis will greatly increase in the future. It is also likely that each case will require the analysis of an increasing number of devices including computers, smartphones, tablets, cloud-based services, Internet of Things devices, wearables, etc. The variety of new digital evidence sources pose new and challenging problems for the digital investigator from an identification, acquisition, storage and analysis perspective. This paper explores the current challenges contributing to the backlog in digital forensics from a technical standpoint and outlines a number of future research topics that could greatly contribute to a more efficient digital forensic process.

Abstract:The number of cyber attacks has increased tremendously in the last few years. This resulted into both human and financial losses at the individual and organization levels. Recently, cyber-criminals are leveraging new skills and capabilities by employing anti-forensics activities, techniques and tools to cover their tracks and evade any possible detection. Consequently, cyber-attacks are becoming more efficient and more sophisticated. Therefore, traditional cryptographic and non-cryptographic solutions and access control systems are no longer enough to prevent such cyber attacks, especially in terms of acquiring evidence for attack investigation. Hence, the need for well-defined, sophisticated, and advanced forensics investigation tools are highly required to track down cyber criminals and to reduce the number of cyber crimes. This paper reviews the different forensics and anti-forensics methods, tools, techniques, types, and challenges, while also discussing the rise of the anti-anti-forensics as a new forensics protection mechanism against anti-forensics activities. This would help forensics investigators to better understand the different anti-forensics tools, methods and techniques that cyber criminals employ while launching their attacks. Moreover, the limitations of the current forensics techniques are discussed, especially in terms of issues and challenges. Finally, this paper presents a holistic view from a literature point of view over the forensics domain and also helps other fellow colleagues in their quest to further understand the digital forensics domain.

Abstract:Owing to a number of reasons, the deployment of encryption solutions are beginning to be ubiquitous at both organizational and individual levels. The most emphasized reason is the necessity to ensure confidentiality of privileged information. Unfortunately, it is also popular as cyber-criminals' escape route from the grasp of digital forensic investigations. The direct encryption of data or indirect encryption of storage devices, more often than not, prevents access to such information contained therein. This consequently leaves the forensics investigation team, and subsequently the prosecution, little or no evidence to work with, in sixty percent of such cases. However, it is unthinkable to jeopardize the successes brought by encryption technology to information security, in favour of digital forensics technology. This paper examines what data encryption contributes to information security, and then highlights its contributions to digital forensics of disk drives. The paper also discusses the available ways and tools, in digital forensics, to get around the problems constituted by encryption. A particular attention is paid to the Truecrypt encryption solution to illustrate ideas being discussed. It then compares encryption's contributions in both realms, to justify the need for introduction of new technologies to forensically defeat data encryption as the only solution, whilst maintaining the privacy goal of users.

Abstract:Abstract Background The basis for criminal trials is the judge’s conviction of the evidence presented in a case. His belief is based on the context or evidence he is satisfactory with and understands. However, the law may establish certain evidence for the judge to adhere to. This study aims to identify the extent of the authenticity and strength of digital or electronic evidence in criminal trials, by identifying legislative trends in the various legal systems, and examining what legal jurists have done to determine the extent of the authenticity of the electronic evidence of cybercrimes. Results This study will research the legitimacy of electronic evidence and the conditions for its verification, the extent of the authenticity of electronic evidence found during an investigation, the difficulties of obtaining electronic evidence that can be presented before the courts, and the extent of a presiding judge’s freedom to determine if electronic materials presented in court should be used as evidence. Conclusions Two conditions must be met: first, the electronic evidence must be legally obtained based on written permission from the competent investigation authorities; second, it must be verified as valid by computer science and information technology experts. If those two conditions are not met, the evidence is invalid. The study gives reason to talk about the need for the adoption of international agreements on cooperation in the development and exchange of computer and information technologies, aimed at preserving electronic evidence from destruction and oblige countries to implement and comply with these agreements.

Abstract:The Internet of Things forensics is a specialised field within digital forensics that focuses on the identification of security incidents, as well as the collection and analysis of evidence with the aim of preventing future attacks on IoT networks. IoT forensics differs from other digital forensic fields due to the unique characteristics of IoT devices, such as limited processing power and connectivity. Although numerous studies are available on IoT forensics, the field is rapidly evolving, and comprehensive surveys are needed to keep up with new developments, emerging threats, and evolving best practices. In this respect, this paper aims to review the state of the art in IoT forensics and discuss the challenges in current investigation techniques. A qualitative analysis of related reviews in the field of IoT forensics has been conducted, identifying key issues and assessing primary obstacles. Despite the variety of topics and approaches, common issues emerge. The majority of these issues are related to the collection and pre-processing of evidence because of the counter-analysis techniques and challenges associated with gathering data from devices and the cloud. Our analysis extends beyond technological problems; it further identifies the procedural problems with preparedness, reporting, and presentation as well as ethical issues. In particular, it provides insights into emerging threats and challenges in IoT forensics, increases awareness and understanding of the importance of IoT forensics in preventing cybercrimes, and ensures the security and privacy of IoT devices and networks. Our findings make a substantial contribution to the field of IoT forensics, as they not only involve a critical analysis of the challenges presented in existing works but also identify numerous problems. These insights will greatly assist researchers in identifying appropriate directions for their future research.

Abstract:Evidence destruction and tempering is a time-tested tactic to protect the powerful perpetrators, criminals, and corrupt officials. Countries where law enforcing institutions and judicial system can be comprised, and evidence destroyed or tampered, ordinary citizens feel disengaged with the investigation or prosecution process, and in some instances, intimidated due to the vulnerability to exposure and retribution. Using Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT), such as blockchain, as the underpinning technology, here we propose a conceptual model - 'EvidenceChain', through which citizens can anonymously upload digital evidence, having assurance that the integrity of the evidence will be preserved in an immutable and indestructible manner. Person uploading the evidence can anonymously share it with investigating authorities or openly with public, if coerced by the perpetrators or authorities. Transferring the ownership of evidence from authority to ordinary citizen, and custodianship of evidence from susceptible centralized repository to an immutable and indestructible distributed repository, can cause a paradigm shift of power that not only can minimize spoliation of evidence but human rights abuse too. Here the conceptual model was theoretically tested against some high-profile spoliation of evidence cases from four South Asian developing countries that often rank high in global corruption index and low in human rights index.

Abstract:The significance of the cloud environment is growing in the current digital world. It provides several advantages, such as reduced expenses, the ability to adjust to different needs, adaptability and enhanced cooperation. The field of digital forensic investigations has encountered substantial difficulties in reconciling the requirement for efficient data analysis with the increasing apprehensions regarding privacy in recent times. As investigators analyse digital evidence to unearth crucial information, they must also traverse an intricate network of privacy rules and regulations. Given the increasing prevalence of remote work and the necessity for businesses to be adaptable and quick to react to shifting market circumstances, the cloud infrastructure has become a crucial asset for organisations of various scales. Although the cloud offers benefits such as scalability, flexibility and enhanced collaboration, it presents difficulties in digital forensic investigations regarding data protection, ownership and jurisdictional boundaries. These concerns are becoming increasingly significant as more data is kept in the cloud. In this paper, we present three major challenges that are faced during cloud-based forensics investigation. We analyse the extent to which different data formats increase complexity in forensics investigations in cyberspace. This paper analyses three core challenges facing digital forensics in the cloud environment: legitimacy, complexity and an increase in data volume, looking at the implications these have on data liable for legal issues in court. These challenges contribute to the backlog in digital forensics investigations due to a lack of modularisation of the procedures. To address these concerns, modularisation model is proposed to offer a way to integrate traditional processing functions while ensuring strict adherence to privacy protocols. To overcome these challenges, we propose modularisation as a strategy for improving the future of digital forensic research's operational efficiency, overcoming the identified challenges faced during cloud-based investigations and demonstrating how organisations can mitigate potential risks associated with storing sensitive information in the cloud.

Abstract:Cloud computing technology is rapidly becoming ubiquitous and indispensable. However, its widespread adoption also exposes organizations and individuals to a broad spectrum of potential threats. Despite the multiple advantages the cloud offers, organizations remain cautious about migrating their data and applications to the cloud due to fears of data breaches and security compromises. In light of these concerns, this study has conducted an in-depth examination of a variety of articles to enhance the comprehension of the challenges related to safeguarding and fortifying data within the cloud environment. Furthermore, the research has scrutinized several well-documented data breaches, analyzing the financial consequences they inflicted. Additionally, it scrutinizes the distinctions between conventional digital forensics and the forensic procedures specific to cloud computing. As a result of this investigation, the study has concluded by proposing potential opportunities for further research in this critical domain. By doing so, it contributes to our collective understanding of the complex panorama of cloud data protection and security, while acknowledging the evolving nature of technology and the need for ongoing exploration and innovation in this field. This study also helps in understanding the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of cloud digital forensics, which is found to be quite high at ≈16.53% from 2023 to 2031. Moreover, its market is expected to reach ≈USD 36.9 billion by the year 2031; presently, it is ≈USD 11.21 billion, which shows that there are great opportunities for investment in this area. This study also strategically addresses emerging challenges in cloud digital forensics, providing a comprehensive approach to navigating and overcoming the complexities associated with the evolving landscape of cloud computing.

Abstract:The extensive growth of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has prompted cyber attackers to commence a variety of attacks which need to be identified to maintain the security of industrial data and services. Digital forensics is an extravagant need to detect cyber attacks and to identify cybercriminals. While conducting criminal investigation using digital forensics, there is high probability of leakage of collected digital evidence. Hence, the need for a secure and lightweight cryptosystem arises to protect it from cyber-attacks. In the present paper, authors aim to design a novel forensic framework for digital evidence administration using advanced encryption and preservation mechanisms. Authors focus to encrypt and preserve only digital image evidence but can be deployed on other types of multimedia data like video frames. Three types of Chaos-map algorithms namely 4D hyperchaotic map, 2D Arnold Cat map (ACM) and Henon Map have been utilized to encrypty and decrypt digital image evidence which enable high sensitivity and dependency on initial conditions, quasi-randomness, and ergodicity to digital content. The proposed approaches have been analyzed on different groups of images of different size and validated using various security parameters such as unified average changing intensity (UACI), correlation coefficient, and the number of pixels changing rate (NPCR). Image transformation and compression has been performed after encryption process using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT). The proposed work has been analyzed using histogram and auto-correlation. Experimentations have provided the values of the correlation coefficient of plain images near 1 and the value of adjacent cipher images near zero which show a strong correlation. The evaluated results for UACI are more than 33 % for every considered images. The value for NPCR should be near 100 % and here the calculated results for each image are above 99 %. The complexity of the proposed encryption algorithm is O(n) due to key generation using a cryptographically secure pseudo-random number generator (CSPRNG). The compressed and transformed image evidence have been stored into decentralized blockchain to ensure the integrity and confidentiality. Decentralized blockchain has been used as a reliable and promising solution to preserve digital evidence due to its distinct features like secure peer to peer communication, improved trust and transparency among participants, integrity, confidentiality, immutability, without risk of single point-of-failure. The proposed digital forensic model is able to prevent various threats and security challenges which can contaminate or tamper off digital pieces of evidence and assures improved digital evidence administration and defensibility. In the proposed scheme, the encryption process takes only 2–3 s to perform the encryption of each size of image.

Abstract:The field of computer forensics emerged in response to the substantial increase in computer-related crimes occurring annually. This rise in criminal activity can be attributed to the rapid expansion of the internet, which has provided perpetrators with increased opportunities for illicit actions. When a computer system is compromised and an intrusion is detected, it becomes crucial for a specialized forensics team to investigate the incident with the objective of identifying and tracing the responsible party. The outcome of such forensic efforts often leads to legal action being taken against those accountable for the wrongdoing. The methodology employed in computer forensics continually evolves alongside advancements in crime approaches, particularly as attackers leverage emerging technologies. To ensure the accuracy of forensic investigations, it is imperative that the scientific knowledge underlying the forensic process be complemented by the integration of technological tools. A plethora of hardware and software options are available to facilitate the analysis and interpretation of forensic data, thereby enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of investigations. While the fundamental objectives of computer forensics primarily involve the seamless preservation, identification, extraction, documentation, and analysis of data, the widespread adoption of this discipline is contingent upon the law enforcement community's ability to keep pace with advancements in computing technology. Furthermore, the prevalence of diverse computer devices resulting from the emergence of microcomputer technology also plays a crucial role in shaping the field of computer forensics. This research paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of computer forensics, encompassing advanced methodologies and detailing various technology tools that facilitate the forensic process. Specific areas of focus include the analysis of encrypted drives, disk analysis techniques, analysis toolkits, investigations involving volatile memory, and the examination of captured network packets. By exploring these aspects, this paper aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in the field of computer forensics and support practitioners in their pursuit of effective investigative techniques.
