Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a Cayley graph, or a Cayley sum graph, or a twisted Cayley graph, or a twisted Cayley sum graph, or a vertex-transitive graph. Denote the degree of $\Gamma$ by $d$, its edge Cheeger constant by $\mathfrak{h}_\Gamma$, and its vertex Cheeger constant by $h_\Gamma$. Assume that $\Gamma$ is undirected, non-bipartite. We prove that the edge bipartiteness constant of $\Gamma$ is $\Omega({\mathfrak{h}_\Gamma}/{d})$, the vertex bipartiteness constant of $\Gamma$ is $\Omega(h_\Gamma)$, and the smallest eigenvalue of the normalized adjacency operator of $\Gamma$ is $-1 + \Omega({h_\Gamma^2}/{d^2})$. This answers in the affirmative a question of Moorman, Ralli and Tetali on the lower spectral gap of Cayley sum graphs.

A Constant Measurement Quantum Algorithm for Graph Connectivity

Abstract:We introduce a novel quantum algorithm for determining graph connectedness using a constant number of measurements. The algorithm can be extended to find connected components with a linear number of measurements. It relies on non-unitary abelian gates taken from ZX calculus. Due to the fusion rule, the two-qubit gates correspond to a large single action on the qubits. The algorithm is general and can handle any undirected graph, including those with repeated edges and self-loops. The depth of the algorithm is variable, depending on the graph, and we derive upper and lower bounds. The algorithm exhibits a state decay that can be remedied with ancilla qubits. We provide a numerical simulation of the algorithm.

Abstract:In this article we study the top of the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator on infinite graphs. We introduce the dual Cheeger constant and show that it controls the top of the spectrum from above and below in a similar way as the Cheeger constant controls the bottom of the spectrum. Moreover, we show that the dual Cheeger constant at infinity can be used to characterize that the essential spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator shrinks to one point.

Abstract:The Cheeger constant of an open set of the Euclidean space is defined by minimizing the ratio "perimeter over volume", among all its smooth compactly contained subsets. We consider a natural variant of this problem, where the volume of admissible sets is raised to any positive power. We show that for {\it sublinear} powers, all these generalized Cheeger constants are equivalent to the standard one, by means of a universal two-sided estimate. We also show that this equivalence breaks down for {\it superlinear} powers. In this case, some weird phenomena appear. We finally consider the case of convex planar sets and prove an existence result, under optimal assumptions.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce Cheeger type constants via isocapacitary constants introduced by Maz'ya to estimate first Dirichlet, Neumann and Steklov eigenvalues on a finite subgraph of a graph. Moreover, we estimate the bottom of the spectrum of the Laplace operator and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for an infinite subgraph. Estimates for higher-order Steklov eigenvalues on a finite or infinite subgraph are also proved.

Abstract: Graph theory is important in information theory. We introduce a quantization process on graphs and apply the quantized graphs in quantum information. The quon language provides a mathematical theory to study such quantized graphs in a general framework. We give a new method to construct graphical quantum error correcting codes on quantized graphs and characterize all optimal ones. We establish a further connection to geometric group theory and construct quantum low-density parity-check stabilizer codes on the Cayley graphs of groups. Their logical qubits can be encoded by the ground states of newly constructed exactly solvable models with translation-invariant local Hamiltonians. Moreover, the Hamiltonian is gapped in the large limit when the underlying group is infinite.

Abstract:For discrete weighted graphs there is sufficient literature about the Cheeger cut and the Cheeger problem, but for metric graphs there are few results about these problems. Our aim is to study the Cheeger cut and the Cheeger problem in metric graphs. For that, we use the concept of total variation and perimeter in metric graphs introduced in Mazón (Math Eng 5(1):1–38, 2023. https://doi.org/10.3934/mine.2023009), which takes into account the jumps at the vertices of the functions of bounded variation. Moreover, we study the eigenvalue problem for the minus 1-Laplacian operator in metric graphs, whereby we give a method to solve the optimal Cheeger cut problem.

Spectral Determinants of Almost Equilateral Quantum Graphs

Abstract:Kirchoff's matrix tree theorem of 1847 connects the number of spanning trees of a graph to the spectral determinant of the discrete Laplacian [6]. Recently an analogue was obtained for quantum graphs relating the number of spanning trees to the spectral determinant of a Laplacian acting on functions on a metric graph with standard (Neumann-like) vertex conditions [11]. This result holds for quantum graphs where the edge lengths are close together. A quantum graph where the edge lengths are all equal is called equilateral. Here we consider equilateral graphs where we perturb the length of a single edge (almost equilateral graphs). We analyze the spectral determinant of almost equilateral complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, and circulant graphs. This provides a measure of how fast the spectral determinant changes with respect to changes in an edge length. We apply these results to estimate the width of a window of edge lengths where the connection between the number of spanning trees and the spectral determinant can be observed. The results suggest the connection holds for a much wider window of edge lengths than is required in [11].

Abstract:As a non-trivial extension of the celebrated Cheeger inequality, the higher-order Cheeger inequalities for graphs due to Lee, Oveis Gharan and Trevisan provide for each $k$ an upper bound for the $k$-way Cheeger constant in forms of $C(k)\sqrt{\lambda_k(G)}$, where $\lambda_k(G)$ is the $k$-th eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian and $C(k)$ is a constant depending only on $k$. In this article, we prove some new bounds for multi-way Cheeger constants. By shifting the index of the eigenvalue via cyclomatic number, we establish upper bound estimates with an absolute constant instead of $C(k)$. This, in particular, gives a more direct proof of Miclo's higher order Cheeger inequalities on trees. We also show a new lower bound of the multi-way Cheeger constants in terms of the spectral radius of the graph. The proofs involve the concept of discrete nodal domains and a probability argument showing generic properties of eigenfunctions.

On the Quantum Chromatic Numbers of Small Graphs

Abstract:We make two contributions pertaining to the study of the quantum chromatic numbers of small graphs. Firstly, in an elegant paper, Mančinska and Roberson [\textit{Baltic Journal on Modern Computing}, 4(4), 846-859, 2016] gave an example of a graph $G_{14}$ on 14 vertices with quantum chromatic number 4 and classical chromatic number 5, and conjectured that this is the smallest graph exhibiting a separation between the two parameters. We describe a computer-assisted proof of this conjecture, thereby resolving a longstanding open problem in quantum graph theory. Our second contribution pertains to the study of the rank-$r$ quantum chromatic numbers. While it can now be shown that for every $r$, $\chi_q$ and $\chi^{(r)}_q$ are distinct, few small examples of separations between these parameters are known. We give the smallest known example of such a separation in the form of a graph $G_{21}$ on 21 vertices with $\chi_q(G_{21}) = \chi^{(2)}_q(G_{21}) = 4$ and $ \xi(G_{21}) = \chi^{(1)}_q(G_{21}) = \chi(G_{21}) = 5$. The previous record was held by a graph $G_{msg}$ on 57 vertices that was first considered in the aforementioned paper of Mančinska and Roberson and which satisfies $\chi_q(G_{msg}) = 3$ and $\chi^{(1)}_q(G_{msg}) = 4$. In addition, $G_{21}$ provides the first provable separation between the parameters $\chi^{(1)}_q$ and $\chi^{(2)}_q$. We believe that our techniques for constructing $G_{21}$ and lower bounding its orthogonal rank could be of independent interest.

Abstract:In the broad range of studies related to quantum graphs, quantum graph spectra appear as a topic of special interest. They are important in the context of diffusion type problems posed on metric graphs. Theoretical findings suggest that quantum graph eigenvalues can be found as the solutions of a nonlinear eigenvalue problem, and in the special case of equilateral graphs, even as the solutions of a linear eigenvalue problem on the underlying combinatorial graph. The latter, remarkable relation to combinatorial graph spectra will be exploited to derive a solver for the general, non-equilateral case. Eigenvalue estimates from equilateral approximations will be applied as initial guesses in a Newton-trace iteration to solve the nonlinear eigenvalue problem.

The Cheeger Inequality and Coboundary Expansion: Beyond Constant Coefficients

Abstract:The Cheeger constant of a graph, or equivalently its coboundary expansion, quantifies the expansion of the graph. This notion assumes an implicit choice of a coefficient group, namely, $\mathbb{F}_2$. In this paper, we study Cheeger-type inequalities for graphs endowed with a generalized coefficient group, called a sheaf; this is motivated by applications to locally testable codes. We prove that a graph is a good spectral expander if and only if it has good coboundary expansion relative to any (resp. some) constant sheaf, equivalently, relative to any `ordinary' coefficient group. We moreover show that sheaves that are close to being constant in a well-defined sense are also good coboundary expanders, provided that their underlying graph is an expander, thus giving the first example of good coboundary expansion in non-cosntant sheaves. By contrast, for general sheaves on graphs, it is impossible to relate the expansion of the graph and the coboundary expansion of the sheaf. In addition, we show that the normalized second eigenvalue of the (weighted) graph underlying a $q$-thick $d$-dimensional spherical building is $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{q}-3d})$ if $q>9d^2$, and plug this into our results about coboundary expansion of sheaves to get explicit bounds on the coboundary expansion in terms of $q$ and $d$. It approaches a constant as $q$ grows. Along the way, we prove a new version of the Expander Mixing Lemma applying to $r$-partite weighted graphs.

Abstract:We construct a new graph on 120 vertices whose quantum and classical independence numbers are different. At the same time, we construct an infinite family of graphs whose quantum chromatic numbers are smaller than the classical chromatic numbers. Furthermore, we discover the relation to Kochen-Specker sets that characterizes quantum cocliques that are strictly bigger than classical ones. Finally, we prove that for graphs with independence number is two, quantum and classical independence numbers coincide.

Abstract:Motivated by a recent application of quantum graphs to model the anomalous Hall effect we discuss quantum graphs the vertices of which exhibit a preferred orientation. We describe an example of such a vertex coupling and analyze the corresponding band spectra of lattices with square and hexagonal elementary cells showing that they depend heavily on the network topology, in particular, on the degrees of the vertices involved.

Abstract:Quantum graphs were introduced to model free electrons in organic molecules using a self-adjoint Hamiltonian on a network of intervals. A second graph quantization describes wave propagation on a graph by specifying scattering matrices at the vertices. A question that is frequently raised is the extent to which these models are the same or complementary. In particular, are all energy independent unitary vertex scattering matrices associated with a self-adjoint Hamiltonian? Here we review results related to this issue. In addition, we observe that a self-adjoint Dirac operator with four component spinors produces a secular equation for the graph spectrum that matches the secular equation associated with wave propagation on the graph when the Dirac operator describes particles with zero mass and the vertex conditions do not allow spin rotation at the vertices.

Entanglement, quantum correlators and connectivity in graph states

Abstract:In this work, we present a comprehensive exploration of the entanglement and graph connectivity properties of graph states. We quantify the entanglement in pseudo graph states using the entanglement distance, a recently introduced measure of entanglement. Additionally, we propose a novel approach to probe the underlying graph connectivity of genuine graph states, using quantum correlators of Pauli matrices. Our findings also reveal interesting implications for measurement processes, demonstrating the equivalence of certain projective measurements. Finally, we emphasize the simplicity of data analysis within this framework. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the entanglement and connectivity properties of graph states, offering valuable insights for quantum information processing and quantum computing applications. In this work, we do not resort to the celebrated stabilizer formalism, which is the framework typically preferred for the study of this type of state; on the contrary, our approach is solely based on the concepts of expectation values, quantum correlations and projective measurement, which have the advantage of being very intuitive and fundamental tools of quantum theory.

A Cheeger Inequality for Small Set Expansion

Abstract:The discrete Cheeger inequality, due to Alon and Milman (J. Comb. Theory Series B 1985), is an indispensable tool for converting the combinatorial condition of graph expansion to an algebraic condition on the eigenvalues of the graph adjacency matrix. We prove a generalization of Cheeger's inequality, giving an algebraic condition equivalent to small set expansion. This algebraic condition is the p-to-q hypercontractivity of the top eigenspace for the graph adjacency matrix. Our result generalizes a theorem of Barak et al (STOC 2012) to the low small set expansion regime, and has a dramatically simpler proof; this answers a question of Barak (2014).
