Abstract:The art of making structural, polymeric, and metallic glasses is rapidly developing with many applications. A limitation is that under increasing external strain all amorphous solids (like their crystalline counterparts) have a finite yield stress which cannot be exceeded without effecting a plastic response which typically leads to mechanical failure. Understanding this is crucial for assessing the risk of failure of glassy materials under mechanical loads. Here we show that the statistics of the energy barriers ΔE that need to be surmounted changes from a probability distribution function that goes smoothly to zero as ΔE=0 to a pdf which is finite at ΔE=0 . This fundamental change implies a dramatic transition in the mechanical stability properties with respect to external strain. We derive exact results for the scaling exponents that characterize the magnitudes of average energy and stress drops in plastic events as a function of system size.

Structural relaxation and delayed yielding in cyclically sheared Cu-Zr metallic glasses

Abstract:The yielding transition, structural relaxation, and mechanical properties of metallic glasses subjected to repeated loading are examined using molecular dynamics simulations. We consider a poorly-annealed Cu-Zr amorphous alloy periodically deformed in a wide range of strain amplitudes at room temperature. It is found that low-amplitude cyclic loading leads to a logarithmic decay of the potential energy, and lower energy states are attained when the strain amplitude approaches a critical point from below. Moreover, the potential energy after several thousand loading cycles is a linear function of the peak value of the stress overshoot during startup continuous shear deformation of the annealed sample. We show that the process of structural relaxation involves collective, irreversible rearrangements of groups of atoms whose spatial extent is most pronounced at the initial stage of loading and higher strain amplitudes. At the critical amplitude, the glass becomes mechanically annealed for a number of transient cycles and then yields via formation of a shear band. The yielding transition is clearly marked by abrupt changes in the potential energy, storage modulus, and fraction of atoms with large nonaffine displacements.

Abstract:We study numerically the yielding transition of a two dimensional model glass subjected to athermal quasi-static cyclic shear deformation, with the aim of investigating the effect on the yielding behaviour of the degree of annealing, which in turn depends on the preparation protocol. We find two distinct regimes of annealing separated by a threshold energy. Poorly annealed glasses progressively evolve towards the threshold energy as the strain amplitude is increased towards the yielding value. Well annealed glasses with initial energies below the threshold energy exhibit stable behaviour, with negligible change in energy with increasing strain amplitude, till they yield. Discontinuities in energy and stress at yielding increase with the degree of annealing, consistently with recent results found in three dimensions. We observe significant structural change with strain amplitude that closely mirrors the changes in energy and stresses. We investigate groups of particles that are involved in plastic rearrangements. We analyse the distributions of avalanche sizes, of clusters of connected rearranging particles, and related quantities, employing finite size scaling analysis. We verify previously investigated relations between exponents characterising these distributions, and a newly proposed relation between exponents describing avalanche and cluster size distributions.

Abstract:Amorphous solids display a ductile to brittle transition as the kinetic stability of the quiescent glass is increased, which leads to a material failure controlled by the sudden emergence of a macroscopic shear band in quasi-static protocols. We numerically study how finite deformation rates influence ductile and brittle yielding behaviors using model glasses in two and three spatial dimensions. We find that a finite shear rate systematically enhances the stress overshoot of poorly-annealed systems, without necessarily producing shear bands. For well-annealed systems, the non-equilibrium discontinuous yielding transition is smeared out by finite shear rates and it is accompanied by the emergence of multiple shear bands that have been also reported in metallic glass experiments. We show that the typical size of the bands and the distance between them increases algebraically with the inverse shear rate. We provide a dynamic scaling argument for the corresponding lengthscale, based on the competition between the deformation rate and the propagation time of the shear bands.

Abstract:The transition between necking-mediated tensile failure of glasses, at elevated temperatures and/or low strain rates, and shear-banding-mediated tensile failure, at low temperatures and/or high strain rates, is investigated using tensile experiments on metallic glasses and atomistic simulations. We experimentally and simulationally show that this transition occurs through a sequence of macroscopic failure patterns, parametrized by the ultimate tensile strength. Quantitatively analyzing the spatiotemporal dynamics preceding failure, using large scale atomistic simulations corroborated by experimental fractography, reveals how the collective evolution and mutual interaction of shear-driven plasticity and dilation-driven void formation (cavitation) control the various macroscopic failure modes. In particular, we find that, at global failure, the size of the largest cavity in the loading direction exhibits a nonmonotonic dependence on the temperature at a fixed strain rate, which is rationalized in terms of the interplay between shear- and dilation-driven plasticity. We also find that the size of the largest cavity scales with the cross-sectional area of the undeformed sample. Our results shed light on tensile failure of glasses and highlight the need to develop elastoplastic constitutive models of glasses incorporating both shear- and dilation-driven irreversible processes. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.7.L032601 ©2023 American Physical Society

Connecting microscopic and mesoscopic mechanics in model structural glasses

Abstract:We present a novel formalism to characterize elastic heterogeneities in amorphous solids. In particular, we derive high-order strain-energy expansions for pairwise energies under athermal quasistatic dynamics. We then use the presented formalism to study the statistical properties of pairwise expansion coefficients and their link with the statistics of soft, quasilocalized modes, for a wide range of formation histories in both two- and three-dimensional systems. We further exploit the presented framework to access local yield stress maps by performing a non-linear stress–strain expansion within a cavity embedded in a frozen matrix. We show that our “bond micromechanics” compare well with the original “frozen matrix” method, with the caveat of overestimating large stress activations. We additionally show how local yield rules can be used as an input for a scalar elasto-plastic model (EPM) to predict the stress response of materials ranging from ductile to brittle. Finally, we highlight some of the limits of simple mesoscale models in capturing the aging dynamics of post-yielding systems. Intriguingly, we observe subdiffusive and diffusive shear band growths for particle-based simulations and EPMs, respectively.

A delayed yielding transition in mechanically annealed binary glasses at finite temperature

Abstract:<p>The influence of strain amplitude, glass stability and thermal fluctuations on shear band formation and yielding transition is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The model binary mixture is first gradually cooled below the glass transition temperature and then periodically deformed to access a broad range of potential energy states. We find that the critical strain amplitude becomes larger for highly annealed glasses within about one thousand shear cycles. Moreover, upon continued loading at a fixed strain amplitude, the yielding transition is delayed in glasses mechanically annealed to lower energy states. It is also demonstrated that nucleation of a small cluster of atoms with large nonaffine displacements precedes a sharp energy change associated with the yielding transition. These results are important for thermal and mechanical processing of amorphous alloys with tunable mechanical and physical properties.</p>

Abstract:Yielding behavior in amorphous solids has been investigated in computer simulations employing uniform and cyclic shear deformation. Recent results characterise yielding as a discontinuous transition, with the degree of annealing of glasses being a significant parameter. Under uniform shear, discontinuous changes in stresses at yielding occur in the high annealing regime, separated from the poor annealing regime in which yielding is gradual. In cyclic shear simulations, relatively poorly annealed glasses become progressively better annealed as the yielding point is approached, with a relatively modest but clear discontinuous change at yielding. To understand better the role of annealing on yielding characteristics, we perform athermal quasistaic cyclic shear simulations of glasses prepared with a wide range of annealing in two qualitatively different systems -- a model of silica (a network glass), and an atomic binary mixture glass. Two strikingly different regimes of behavior emerge: Energies of poorly annealed samples evolve towards a unique threshold energy as the strain amplitude increases, before yielding takes place. Well annealed samples, in contrast, show no significant energy change with strain amplitude till they yield, accompanied by discontinuous energy changes that increase with the degree of annealing. Significantly, the threshold energy for both systems correspond to dynamical crossover temperatures associated with changes in the character of the energy landscape sampled by glass forming liquids. Uniform shear simulations support the recently discussed scenario of a random critical point separating ductile and brittle yielding, which our results now associate with dynamical crossover temperatures in the corresponding liquids.

Thermally activated dynamics of annealed glasses near the yielding transition under cyclic shear

Abstract:While experiments and simulations have provided a rich picture of the dynamic heterogeneity in glasses at constant temperature or under steady shear, the dynamics of glasses under oscillatory shear remain comparatively less explored. Recent work has shown that oscillatory shear protocols can embed a ``memory'' into a glass's structure, whereby the material will exhibit dynamics that are encoded by the oscillatory shear protocol applied. However, most of the computational work studying the memory effect has been performed in the zero temperature limit, and the effects of thermalization are poorly characterized. In this work, we use nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to study the dynamics of a model two-dimensional glass former at low, non-zero temperatures under oscillatory shear. While we show that the systems' dynamics are independent of sample preparation for either small or larger strain amplitudes, the dynamics become distinct near the yield point when the deformation is applied at finite temperature. We then characterize the dynamic heterogeneity using two metrics, one derived from the vibrational modes and one that exploits machine learning to identify regions prone to rearrangement. This analysis provides evidence that the dynamics below and above yield emerge from distinct structural origins that may be important for developing improved constitutive models that can predict memory in disordered solids.

Brittle to ductile transitions in glasses: Roles of soft defects and loading geometry

Abstract:Understanding the fracture toughness of glasses is of prime importance for science and technology. We study it here using extensive atomistic simulations in which the interaction potential, glass transition cooling rate and loading geometry are systematically varied, mimicking a broad range of experimentally accessible properties. Glasses' nonequilibrium mechanical disorder is quantified through $A_{\rm g}$, the dimensionless prefactor of the universal spectrum of nonphononic excitations, which measures the abundance of soft glassy defects that affect plastic deformability. We show that while a brittle-to-ductile transition might be induced by reducing the cooling rate, leading to a reduction in $A_{\rm g}$, iso-$\!A_{\rm g}$ glasses are either brittle or ductile depending on the degree of Poisson contraction under unconstrained uniaxial tension. Eliminating Poisson contraction using constrained tension reveals that iso-$\!A_{\rm g}$ glasses feature similar toughness, and that varying $A_{\rm g}$ under these conditions results in significant toughness variation. Our results highlight the roles played by both soft defects and loading geometry (which affects the activation of defects) in the toughness of glasses.

Abstract:We measure the local yield stress, at the scale of small atomic regions, in a deeply quenched two-dimensional glass model undergoing shear banding in response to athermal quasistatic (AQS) deformation. We find that the occurrence of essentially a single plastic event suffices to bring the local yield stress distribution to a well-defined value for all strain orientations, thus essentially erasing the memory of the initial structure. It follows that in a well-relaxed sample, plastic events cause the abrupt (nucleation-like) emergence of a local softness contrast and thus precipitate the formation of a band, which, in its early stages, is measurably softer than the steady-state flow. Moreover, this postevent yield stress ensemble presents a mean value comparable to that of the inherent states of a supercooled liquid around the mode-coupling temperature $T_{\rm MCT}$. This, we argue, explains that the transition between brittle and ductile yielding in amorphous materials occurs around a comparable parent temperature. Our data also permit to capture quantitatively the contributions of pressure and density changes and demonstrate unambiguously that they are negligible compared with the changes of softness caused by structural rejuvenation.

Abstract:Large-scale molecular-dynamics simulations are performed to study the steady-state yielding dynamics of a well-established simple glass. In contrast to the supercooled state, where the shear stress, σ, tends to zero at vanishing shear rate, γ̇, a stress plateau forms in the glass which extends over about two decades in shear rate. This strongly suggests the existence of a finite dynamic yield stress in the glass, σ+(T)≡σ(T;γ̇→0)>0. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of σ+ suggests a yield stress discontinuity at a critical temperature of Tc=0.4 in agreement with recent mode coupling theory predictions. The corresponding qualitative change of the flow curves enables us to bracket the critical temperature Tc of the theory from above and from below. We scrutinize and support this observation by testing explicitly for the assumptions (affine flow, absence of flow-induced ordering) inherent in the theory. Furthermore, while qualitative similarity is found between the viscosity and the final relaxation time of stress fluctuations, significant quantitative differences are observed in the nonlinear regime.

Abstract:We revealed a notable internal thermal effect on the yielding of metallic glasses with the aid of a newly developed microscopic model focusing on the interaction of incipient localized shear events. It is shown that at the high strain rate, localized heating in metallic glasses instead of localized structure change plays the dominant role in shear softening. Using the modified cooperative shear model with the ingredient of the thermal effect, we captured the sudden decrease of the strength of metallic glasses after a critical strain rate, which was found in experiments. Abstract:We numerically elucidate the microscopic mechanisms controlling the relaxation dynamics of a three-dimensional lattice glass model that has static properties compatible with the approach to a random first-order transition. At low temperatures, the relaxation is triggered by a small population of particles with low-energy barriers forming mobile clusters. These emerging quasiparticles act as facilitating defects responsible for the spatially heterogeneous dynamics of the system, whose characteristic length scales remain strongly coupled to thermodynamic fluctuations. Abstract:Glasses acquire their solid-like properties by cooling from the supercooled liquid via a continuous transition known as the glass transition. Recent research on soft glasses indicates that besides temperature, another route to liquify glasses is by application of stress that forces relaxation and flow. Here we provide experimental evidence that the stress-induced onset of flow of glasses occurs via a sharp first order-like transition. Using simultaneous x-ray scattering during the oscillatory rheology of a colloidal glass, we identify a sharp symmetry change from anisotropic solid to isotropic liquid structure at the transition from the linear to the nonlinear regime. Concomitantly, intensity fluctuations sharply acquire liquid distributions. These observations identify the yielding of glasses to increasing stress as sharp affine-to-nonaffine transition, providing a new conceptual paradigm of the yielding of this technologically important class of materials, and offering new perspectives on the glass transition.

Abstract:A new approach to the dynamics of the universe based on work by O Murchadha, Foster, Anderson and the author is presented. The only kinematics presupposed is the spatial geometry needed to define configuration spaces in purely relational terms. A new formulation of the relativity principle based on Poincare's analysis of the problem of absolute and relative motion (Mach's principle) is given. The enire dynamics is based on shape and nothing else. It leads to much stronger predictions than standard Newtonian theory. For the dynamics of Riemannian 3-geometries on which matter fields also evolve, implementation of the new relativity principle establishes unexpected links between special relativity, general relativity and the gauge principle. They all emerge together as a self-consistent complex from a unified and completely relational approach to dynamics. A connection between time and scale invariance is established. In particular, the representation of general relativity as evolution of the shape of space leads to unique definition of simultaneity. This opens up the prospect of a solution of the problem of time in quantum gravity on the basis of a fundamental dynamical principle.

Abstract:The physics of disordered media, from metallic glasses to colloidal suspensions, granular matter and biological tissues, offers difficult challenges because it often occurs far from equilibrium, in materials lacking symmetries and evolving through complex energy landscapes. Here, we review recent theoretical efforts to provide microscopic insights into the mechanical properties of amorphous media using approaches from statistical mechanics as unifying frameworks. We cover both the initial regime corresponding to small deformations, and the yielding transition marking a change between elastic response and plastic flow. We discuss the specific features arising for systems evolving near a jamming transition, and extend our discussion to recent studies of the rheology of dense biological and active materials.
