Abstract:<p>This study adopted sodium citrate, a cation-binding agent, to disintegrate the complex matrix of waste activated sludge, which aimed to improve hydrogen fermentation efficiency of the sludge. Results showed that the sodium citrate treatment effectively disintegrated the sludge flocs through removing bridging multivalent cations, which led to the solubilization of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and intracellular organics, the higher enzymatic accessibility of particulate organics, and the release of hydrolase. Owing to the better substrate condition and the enhanced hydrolase activity, the hydrogen yield significantly raised from 3.7 to 18.8 mL/g-VSadded at the optimal dosage of 0.3 g sodium citrate/g-SS. The sodium citrate treatment also reduced the lag time and improved the hydrogen generation rate and sludge reduction. High-throughput sequencing results showed that <em>Clostridium</em> and <em>Romboutsia</em> were enriched, which essentially improved the hydrogen yield. This work provides an effective, environmentally friendly and energy-saving method for improving bioenergy recovery from sludge.</p>
