Abstract:This work focuses on the influences of excitation signals on the radiation characteristics (directivity, bandwidth, and gain) of electronics-based antennas by utilizing the CST Studio Suite software. Today, terahertz (THz) waves have attracted intense attention due to their significant advantages: high penetration, low quantum energy, highfrequency bandwidth, spectral fingerprints, and transients, etc. As a type of THz radiation source and a core element of communication systems, THz antennas have essential application value. However, there are challenges for THz antenna technology, such as low radiation efficiency, high fabrication difficulty, high cost, and complex tests. Previous studies have achieved expected radiation performance for electronics-based THz antennas, mainly by changing the materials and the structure. As passive devices, antennas require excitation signals to operate, which may affect the radiation characteristics. This work takes the THz dipole antenna as the primary example to study the influences, while patch and horn THz antennas are built as auxiliary examples. The research results demonstrate that different excitation signals have significant influences on the antenna's radiation characteristics (bandwidth and gain). This work can thus help to achieve the desired antenna radiation goals to improve the controllability and practicality of antennas, making antennas suitable for various application scenarios and requirements. Abstract:For 6G in 2030 and beyond, key performance metrics long for terabit-per-second, one-tenth of millisecond latency with zero jitter, millimeter-preci-sion sensing and positioning, and seamless connectivity, among others. To meet these demands, the terahertz (0.1–10 THz) band comes into the horizon, with ultra-broad bandwidth and sub-millimeter wavelength, which, however, suffers from distance limitation and power consumption concerns. In this article, four interdisciplinary directions to address the above challenges and unleash the full potential of THz communications are investigated, namely, integrated sensing and communication, ultra-mas-sive MIMO and dynamic hybrid beamforming, intelligent surfaces, and machine/deep learning. Furthermore, open problems as well as integration of these solutions are elaborated. Qualitative and quantitative studies demonstrate the benefits and performance of the proposed solutions.
Terahertz radiation-induced sub-cycle field electron emission across a split-gap dipole antenna

Abstract:We use intense terahertz pulses to excite the resonant mode (0.6 THz) of a micro-fabricated dipole antenna with a vacuum gap. The dipole antenna structure enhances the peak amplitude of the in-gap THz electric field by a factor of ~170. Above an in-gap E-field threshold amplitude of ~10 MVcm-1, THz-induced field electron emission is observed (TIFEE) as indicated by the field-induced electric current across the dipole antenna gap. Field emission occurs within a fraction of the driving THz period. Our analysis of the current (I) and incident electric field (E) is in agreement with a Millikan-Lauritsen analysis where log (I) exhibits a linear dependence on 1/E. Numerical estimates indicate that the electrons are accelerated to a value of approximately one tenth of the speed of light.

Abstract:Metamaterials with subwavelength structural features show unique electromagnetic responses that are unattainable with natural materials. Recently, the research on these artificial materials has been pushed forward to the terahertz (THz) region because of potential applications in biological fingerprinting, security imaging, and high frequency magnetic and electric resonant devices. Furthermore, active control of their properties could further facilitate and open up new applications in terms of modulation and switching. In our work, we will first present our studies of dipole arrays at terahertz frequencies. Then in experimental and theoretical studies of terahertz subwavelength L-shaped structure, we proposed an unusual-mode current resonance responsible for low-frequency characteristic dip in transmission spectra. Comparing spectral properties of our designed simplified structures with that of split-ring resonators, we attribute this unusual mode to the resonance coupling and splitting under the broken symmetry of the structure. Finally, we use optical pump terahertz probe method to investigate the spectral and dynamic behaviour of optical modulation in the split-ring resonators. We have observed the blue-shift and band broadening in the spectral changes of transmission under optical excitation at different delay times. The calculated surface currents using finite difference time domain simulation are presented to characterize these resonances, and the blue-shift can be explained by the changed refractive index and conductivity in the photoexcited semiconductor substrate.

Abstract:A terahertz band (0.1–10 THz) has the characteristics of rich spectrum resources, high transmission speed, strong penetration, and clear directionality. However, the terahertz signal will suffer serious attenuation and absorption during transmission. Therefore, a terahertz antenna with high gain, high efficiency, and wide bandwidth is an indispensable key component of terahertz wireless systems and has become a research hotspot in the field of antennas. In this paper, a high-gain broadband antenna is presented for terahertz applications. The antenna is a three-layer structure, fed by a grounded coplanar waveguide (GCPW), using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) material as the dielectric substrate, and the metal through-hole of the dielectric substrate forms a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) structure. The metal fence structure is introduced to reduce the coupling effect between the radiation patches and increase the radiation bandwidth and gain. The center frequency is 0.6366 THz, the operating bandwidth is 0.61–0.68 THz, the minimum value of the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is 1.00158, and the peak gain is 13.14 dBi. In addition, the performance of the designed antenna with a different isolation structure, the length of the connection line, the height of the substrate, the radius of the through-hole, and the thickness of the patch is also studied.

Terahertz Generation from SI-GaAs Photoconductive Dipole Antenna with Different Electrode Gaps

Abstract:Many factors influence the radiation power of terahertz (THz) emitters including photoconductive substrate material, antenna geometrical structure and excite light power. In this paper we mainly focus on the performance of semi-insulating (SI) GaAs photoconductive antennas with different geometrical sizes. Three kinds of antennas were prepared with the same structure, material and electrode width (100μm), but with different electrodes gaps of 50μm, 100μm and 150μm, respectively. They were excited by a femto-second fiber laser and tested with THz generation capability. It turns out that the three antennas have a same spectrum scope of 0.2-3THz. The small gap antenna can emit higher THz radiation with lower voltage but it was easy to burn down, that's why a large gap is needed to get higher THz power. Triggered by the same laser of several nJ, peak frequency moves to high frequency with decrease of electrode gaps. Radiation field screening is the dominant causation.
Influence of dielectric environment on the resonant characteristics in anisotropic terahertz metamaterials

Abstract:Highly sensitive response of anisotropic terahertz metamaterials to electromagnetic waves has attracted considerable attention due to its potential applications in terahertz modulators and biosensing devices. We designed three microstructure samples with split ring arrays. The terahertz transmission spectra are experimentally measured at different rotation angle. It is found that as the rotation angle increases, the resonance mode has gradually evolved from a single dipole oscillation mode to the double oscillation modes accompanied with LC and dipole oscillations, we further simulated the polarization conversion characteristics of the single splitting rings. It shows that the highest conversion efficiency appears at 45 degrees. But it doesn’t have polarization conversion effect at 0° and 90°. Subsequently, we have utilized ultrashort pulse laser to optically control the electromagnetic response by exciting the photogenerated carriers in the metamaterial samples. The experimental data show that the transmittance change obviously with the pump light. Additionally, when the angle is 90 degrees, it can be observed that the LC resonance annihilates earlier than the resonance of the dipole resonance with the increase of pump power, implying the former is particularly sensitive to the variation of the dielectric environment. To further explore the influence of dielectric environment on the resonance characteristics of the terahertz metamaterials, we have further performed the simulations with the applied surface analyte of different refractive index. The simulated data show that with the increase of the refractive index of the surface analyte, the resonance frequency of the dipole oscillation has a more significant blue shift than the resonance frequency of the LC oscillation. Our obtained results could provide the idea for designing terahertz modulators and sensitive biosensing devices.
Active control properties and coupling effect in the terahertz metamaterials

Abstract:We modulate the electromagnetic response of terahertz metamaterials by exciting photogenerated carriers with ultra-short pulsed laser, and realize the active control of terahertz transmission and resonances in a wide band. The experimental results show that when the terahertz electric vector is perpendicular and parallel to the bar direction with the open gap in the circular split ring resonators, respectively, the transmission of the non-resonant region and resonance absorption are significantly tuned by the irradiated pump pulse. With the increase of the pump power, the resonance absorption peak decreases and the frequency of resonance dip has a remarkable blue-shift. Meanwhile, the transmission of the non-resonant region decreases correspondingly. It is also found that the blue-shift of the resonance is mainly determined by the change of conductivity and dielectric constant in the photoexcited layer of the substrate. Through the numerical simulation, we have further proved the introduction of pump light has a significant modulation effect on the electromagnetic properties of terahertz metamaterials. Additionally, it can be observed that the LC resonance annihilates earlier than the resonance of the dipole resonance with the increase of pump power, implying the former is particularly sensitive to the variation of the active control. In the theoretical analysis, based on the Lorenz oscillator model, we have derived and calculated the resonance response intensity of the coupled oscillators under an external field. The calculated results indicate the coupling coefficient and damping rate have an impact on the spectra evolution, showing that the resonant response peak has a remarkable blue-shift with the increase of coupling coefficient and the resonance response intensity decreases with the increase of damping rate.

Abstract:A survey on the mechanisms of powerful terahertz (THz) radiation from laser plasmas is presented.Firstly, an analytical model is described, showing that a transverse net current formed in a plasma can be converted into THz radiations at the plasma oscillation frequency.This theory is applied to explain THz generation in a gas driven by two-color laser pulses.It is also applied to THz generation in a tenuous plasma driven by a chirped laser pulse, a few-cycle laser pulse, a DC/AC bias electric field.These are well verified by particle-in-cell simulations, demonstrating that THz radiations produced in these approaches are nearly single-cycles and linear polarized.In the chirped laser scheme and the few-cycle laser scheme, THz radiations with the peak field strength of tens of MV/cm and the peak power of gigawatt can be achieved with the incident laser intensity less than 10 17 W/cm 2 .

Abstract:We investigate terahertz transmission properties and electromagnetic resonance modes in the asymmetric triangle structures with the change of asymmetric distance and the direction of electric field. When the THz electric field is perpendicular to the split gap of triangle, the electric field can better excite the THz absorption in the triangle structures. Importantly, electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) characteristics are observed in the triangle structures due to the destructive interference of the different excited modes. The distributions of electric field and surface current density simulated by finite difference time domain indicate that the bright mode is excited by the side of triangle structures and dark mode is excited by the gap-side of triangle. The present study is helpful to understand the electromagnetic resonance in the asymmetric triangular metamaterials.

Abstract:Terahertz radiation falls within the spectrum of hydrogen bonding, molecular rotation, and vibration, as well as van der Waals forces, indicating that many biological macromolecules exhibit a strong absorption and resonance in this frequency band. Research has shown that the terahertz radiation of specific frequencies and energies can mediate changes in cellular morphology and function by exciting nonlinear resonance effects in proteins. However, current studies have mainly focused on the cellular level and lack systematic studies on multiple levels. Moreover, the mechanism and law of interaction between terahertz radiation and neurons are still unclear. Therefore, this paper analyzes the mechanisms by which terahertz radiation modulates the nervous system, and it analyzes and discusses the methods by which terahertz radiation modulates neurons. In addition, this paper reviews the laws of terahertz radiation's influence on neuronal morphology and kinetic properties and discusses them in detail in terms of terahertz radiation frequency, energy, and time. In the future, the safety of the terahertz radiation system should be considered first to construct the safety criterion of terahertz modulation, and the spatial resolution of the terahertz radiation system should be improved. In addition, the systematic improvement of the laws and mechanisms of terahertz modulation of the nervous system on multiple levels is the key to applying terahertz waves to neuroscience. This paper can provide a platform for researchers to understand the mechanism of the terahertz–nervous system interaction, its current status, and future research directions.

Abstract:Most materials in nature do not have electromagnetic response in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. THz metamaterials that were invented recently provide an opportunity for the development and application of THz technology. However, the conventional methods for modulating the THz metamaterials are complicated. In this paper, we present a novel and simple way to adjust the THz metamaterials just by zooming in and out the THz metamaterial's unit. Simulation results show that THz metamaterials are still impedance-matching, even after the ratio change. In addition, the resonance frequency changes inversely with the unit ratio. Absorption bandwidth will be widened when the THz metamaterial's unit is shrunk. According to our approach, any response frequency of THz metamaterials (a value of absorption peak is greater than 98%) can be acquired within specific frequency bands. This modulation simplifies the THz metamaterial design and broadens the applications of metamaterials in detectors.

Abstract:Considering the overmoded structures of high-power Terahertz(THz) sources are often electrically large, it's difficult to compute the radiation of THz antennas on a personal computer due to over long time and prohibitive computation resources. A parallelized finite-difference time domain (FDTD) algorithm based on MPI platform and virtual topology structure, combined with theory of guided waves, is presented for analysis of the radiation of the large THz conical horn excited by mixed-mode souce. Cartesian virtual topology structure is firstly defined by MPI_CART_CREATE() function based on MPI platform. And MPI_CART_SHIFT() function is used to define the position relations of the subdomains. Then FDTD method is used in each subdomain. The absorbing boundary of the whole FDTD domain is uniaxial perfectly matchedlayer (UPML), and that of the waveguide is convolutional PML(CPML). Synchronous communication mode is used in parallelized FDTD between the adjacent subdomains. The coefficient of field components for each mode source can be got based on the given power of each mode. Thus the mixed-mode excitation source can be set by the coefficient and each mode's initial phase. Examples of an electrically large THz horn with 4 or 6 modes mixed excited are given in this paper. Considering the universal characteristic of FDTD method, the method shown in this paper can be used to simulate the radiation of other kinds of THz antennas with mixed-mode exicitation source. And it's useful for the design of those structures.

Abstract:Photoconductive antennas with different structures generate terahertz (THz) waves with different peak frequencies at the same experimental conditions, so does the same antenna at different experimental conditions. It is necessary to investigate the determinants of peak frequencies of THz radiation from photoconductive antenna to obtain the THz wave with required peak frequency. In this paper, the factors of laser spot size, trapping time, carrier lifetime, carrier density, bias field, antenna gap size were analyzed based on our experiment and literatures. The peak frequency moved to higher frequency with the decrease of antenna gap size, carrier lifetimes, trapping time, laser beam diameter, and the peak frequency moved to lower frequency with the decrease of bias field, carrier densities.

Abstract:Antennas, i.e., elements transforming localized or waveguide modes into freely propagating fields and vice versa, are vital components for wireless technologies across the entire spectrum of electromagnetic waves, including microwaves and optics. Although optical antennas are usually fed by either a single source or many sources incoherently, recent studies demonstrate an ability of resonant nanostructures to cause the synchronization of quantum source spontaneous emission, i.e., Dicke superradiance effect. What remains poorly explored is how the coherent excitation can affect antenna performance: its multipole composition, directivity, efficiency, and Purcell effect. In this paper, we investigate an antenna excited by two coherent sources and demonstrate that this approach can boost antenna performance. To make the discussion independent of the frequency range, we restrict the consideration by all-dielectric antennas, which attract significant interest in both microwaves and optics. We explore that coherent excitation of a dielectric antenna by two dipole sources makes it feasible to control the multipoles resulting in boosted superradiance and enhanced directivity. Interestingly, it makes possible excitation of nonradiative field configuration, anapole state, and turning it on and off on demand. Remarkably, this approach also allows reducing the quenching effect and enhancing the radiation efficiency without changing the antenna geometry. We design a dielectric subwavelength coherently driven antenna operating in both superdirective and superradiative regimes simultaneously with the total enhancement factor over 2000.

Abstract:This paper provides an analysis of radio wave scattering for frequencies ranging from the microwave to the Terahertz band (e.g., 1 GHz - 1 THz), by studying the scattering power reradiated from various types of materials with different surface roughnesses. First, fundamentals of scattering and reflection are developed and explained for use in wireless mobile radio, and the effect of scattering on the reflection coefficient for rough surfaces is investigated. Received power is derived using two popular scattering models - the directive scattering (DS) model and the radar cross section (RCS) model through simulations over a wide range of frequencies, materials, and orientations for the two models, and measurements confirm the accuracy of the DS model at 140 GHz. This paper shows that scattering can become a prominent propagation mechanism as frequencies extend to millimeter-wave (mmWave) and beyond, but at other times can be treated like simple reflection. Knowledge of scattering effects is critical for appropriate and realistic channel models, which further support the development of massive multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) techniques, localization, ray tracing tool design, and imaging for future 5G and 6G wireless systems.

Abstract:Antenna is a critical component in the miniaturization of wireless communication equipment. Magnetoelectric (ME) antennas have gotten a lot of attention because they are 4-5 orders of magnitude smaller than electrically small antennas. Transverse wave is an important excitation method of magnetoelectric effect, but its influence on the radiation of ME antenna has not been fully studied. This paper use Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) to develop a two-dimensional anisotropic model of ME antenna to study the transverse effect on radiation performance. After verifying the model, the transverse wave is adjusted by changing the electrode arrangement and the excitation magnetic field is calculated to study the transverse wave influence on the radiation performance. These results indicate that matching the electrode width to 1/2 the wavelength of the transverse wave can improve radiation performance by two orders of magnitude. This study develops a new simulation model and design concept for ME antennas, thereby promoting their application in the Internet of Things (IoT) and embedded sensors, and other fields.

Abstract:In this paper, the enhanced terahertz radiation transformed from surface plasmon polaritons, excited by a uniformly moving electron bunch, in a structure consisting of a monolayer graphene supported on a dielectric grating with arbitrary profile is investigated. The results show that the grating profile has significant influence on the dispersion curves and radiation characteristics including radiation frequency and intensity. The dependence of dispersion and radiation characteristics on the grating shape for both the symmetric and asymmetric gratings is studied in detail. Moreover, we find that, for an asymmetric grating with certain profile, there exist two different diffraction types, and one of the two types can provide higher radiation intensity comparing to the other one. These results will definitely facilitate the practical application in developing a room-temperature, tunable, coherent and miniature terahertz radiation source.
