Abstract:Environmental concerns have driven an interest in sustainable smart cities, through the monitoring and optimisation of networked infrastructure processes. At the same time, there are concerns about who these interventions and services are for, and who benefits. HCI researchers and designers interested in civic life have started to call for the democratisation of urban space through resistance and political action to challenge state and corporate claims. This paper aims to add to the growing body of critical and civic led smart city literature in HCI by leveraging concepts from the environmental humanities about more than human worlds, as a way to shift understandings within HCI of smart cities away from the exceptional and human centered, towards a more inclusive understanding that incorporates and designs for other others and other species. We illustrate through a case study that involved codesigning Internet of Things with urban agricultural communities, possibilities for creating more environmentally and socially just smart cities.
Empathy Enabled by Critical Design - A New Tool in the Universal Design Toolbox

Abstract:The next generation of designers, architects, engineers, etc. have a rough road ahead. Due to their strong role in shaping our future, they must face issues relating to inclusion, equality, and diversity, ensuring that the 'Elder Boom' generation have safe, useful, and independent housing, workplaces are planned and constructed in such a way that they are usable by the broader population, and social justice and equality are in focus when designing public buildings and spaces so as to eliminate prejudice and discrimination. This implies that the built environment as we know it must be improved. Thus, those responsible for addressing upcoming challenges, i.e. future universal design thinkers, must be adequately equipped with various methodological tools and valuable experience of interdisciplinary work. Both aspects are essential to preparing them for real-life problems and projects, regardless of complexity. What happens if architecture, interior architecture, engineering, and product design students spend a week together investigating the built environment from a critical design point of view? Can this upside-down way of thinking provide them with alternative starting points for the problem-solving process, and help them to identify and understand people's needs differently? This paper describes a critical design method and presents the results of and lessons learned from conducting a one-week workshop based on this method. The outcomes of the workshop (critical design examples) were created to illuminate the built environment and so provide the students with first-hand experience of what can happen if the "dark side" of design thinking is ignored.
Human evolutionary aspects and urban dwelling features

Abstract:Planning and architecture of modern housing projects should take into account the fact that human well-being depends very much on needs derived from the natural history of human evolutionary aspects, which include territoriality, security, and a balance between privacy and communal activity. Although model housing projects should consider space, all to often the need for privacy and the importance of the residential environment has been neglected. Putative consequences are a loss of social coherence, resulting in anonymity, vandalism and an increase in crime rates. On a game theoretical basis, we predict that a tendency for cooperation grows with the increasing probability of future meetings among inhabitants. The higher the probability to re-meet co-residents, the more interactions are to be expected. Frequent meetings lead to reciprocal recognition and enable the inhabitants to control their environment by identifying straners. This mechanism results in the identification with a common territory. Friendly interactions between residents are a motor for and an indicator of satisfactory living conditions. For this study, six different Viennese residential apartment blocks were selected and their quality measured using a checklist. The behavior of the residents was recorded using ethological standard methods (N = 1653), their subjective evaluation was assessed by on-site interviews (N = 300), and the frequency of physical incivilities was counted. The results support the hypotheses. The classification of urban environments relating to the presence of the above-listed features indicates that high habitat quality covaries with differences in preference for the site, extent of friendly interactions and familiarity with other residents, and occurrences of incivilities. One may conclude that the importance of the quality of the habitat environment cannot be overestimated, as its socially integrative potential is a means to counteract anonymity and crime incidence in cities.

Abstract:This paper addresses the controversy about the relationship between crime and spatial design. There are tow divergent views: the one which advocates open and permeable environments in which strangers as well as inhabitants pans through spaces and the second based on the model of defensible space in single mix which advocates closed and impermeable environments.The paper identifies the hidden dangers of research into crime and its spatial distribution and warns against over-simplistic assumptions, particularly at the larger scale of analysis. Research by Simon Shu and other crime–space studies carried out by the Space Syntax Laboratory have some striking results – they found no correlation between crime and density, only a poor correlation between affluence and crime, but a very strong correlation between layout type and all kinds of crime, with traditional street patterns the best and the most ‘modern’ hierarchical layouts the worst. The results linking socio-economic as well as spatial data are preliminary but strongly indicate that rich and poor alike benefit from living in traditional streets. The paper offers some simple design guidance: join buildings together, avoid any kind of secondary access, make sure that all public spaces are continuously ‘constituted’ by dwelling entrances and maximise the intervisibility of these entrances by a linear rather than a broken up layout. The research draws out a critical lesson in space syntax crime analysis that spatial factors do not operate one at a time to increase or reduce security, they interact and both global and local factors must be right if security is to be enhanced.

Abstract:Following decades of both planned and market‐driven decentralization of cities and city‐regions, urban policy makers are now extolling the virtues of the compact city. The model which is held up as a good example is that of the traditional European city which is relatively dense and fine‐grained. The model that is no longer considered sustainable (economically and socially as well as environmentally) is the sprawl, strip or edge city, more often than not planned around the automobile. One question is the extent to which this European model of the good city transfers to the UK context. The author would argue that a number of engrained attitudes to city planning (and indeed city life) persist which together might undermine attempts to stimulate more active and culturally confident cities. Nevertheless, if we are to have more active and better cities, we need to know how best to manage, develop and design them. This paper argues that the city is a phenomenon of structured complexity. Good cities tend to be a balance of a reasonably ordered and legible city form, and places of many and varied comings and goings, meetings and transactions. What might appear to some as disorder is very often simply the everyday rhythm of city life. In the absence of such activity, cities can lose their urbanity and eventually become suburban in character. The large part of this paper contains an exposition of the principles of good city form, activity, street life and urban culture. That is to say, urbanity itself. By reference to a number of cities, the intention is to show that it is perfectly possible to plan for and design the active city.
Sense of Community and Neighbourhood Form: An Assessment of the Social Doctrine of New Urbanism

Abstract:New urbanism, an umbrella term which encompasses 'neotraditional development' as well as 'traditional neighbourhood design', lives by an unswerving belief in the ability of the built environment to create a 'sense of community'. The purpose of this paper is to assess whether the social doctrine of new urbanism can be successfully supported or at least integrated with the social science literature which deals with the question of community formation. Towards this goal, the paper first delineates the social doctrine of new urbanism, and then discusses the conceptual frameworks and empirical findings that either support or contradict the idea that a sense of community will follow the physical form of cities and neighbourhoods generally and new urbanist principles specifically. After laying this groundwork, the remainder of the paper presents an assessment of whether a reconciliation between research and doctrine may be possible, in light of various apparent contradictions between the social claims of new urbanists and the results of research by social scientists. It is concluded that new urbanists need to clarify the meaning of sense of community as it pertains to physical design. Further, it is maintained that while some research supports the idea that resident interaction and sense of community are related to environmental factors, the effectuation of this goal is usually only achieved via some intermediate variable. This latter point leaves open the question of whether any number of other design creeds could produce the same result via a different design philosophy. The need for further research is stressed; this should be focused on investigating the issue more directly.

Abstract:Technological artefacts are created in accordance with the values and worldviews of their designers. In operation, they act as a medium, facilitating and constraining human interaction with, and perception of, the world. When used on a large scale, they may lastingly affect societal ethos. If institutional structures of domination allocate the resources necessary for artefact design and development to some population groups over others, the direction and extent of such an effect may lead to increased disparity and inequity. While the direct influence of technology on opinion is well-studied, the evaluation of non-epistemic values, assumptions and presuppositions is a hurdle in the way of a deeper understanding of the large-scale effects of asymmetries in worldviews embodied by artefacts. Here, we show that artefacts have a strong potential to bias societal worldviews when they are distributed unevenly across the value spectrum. They can affect the clustering behaviour of agents with regard to worldview, both aiding and hindering intra- and inter-cluster diversity, depending on their distribution and frequency. Our findings underline the distributional sensitivity of worldview dynamics to institutional structures of domination. We highlight the importance of procedural interventions such as participatory design, which explicitly acknowledges existing asymmetries and redistributes power accordingly. Identifying public values and spatial conflicts in urban planning

Abstract:Identifying the diverse and often competing values of citizens, and resolving the consequent public value conflicts, are of significant importance for inclusive and integrated urban development. Scholars have highlighted that relational, value-laden urban space gives rise to many diverse conflicts that vary both spatially and temporally. Although notions of public value conflicts have been conceived in theory, there are very few empirical studies that identify such values and their conflicts in urban space. Building on public value theory and using a case-study mixed-methods approach, this paper proposes a new approach to empirically investigate public value conflicts in urban space. Using unstructured participatory data of 4,528 citizen contributions from a Public Participation Geographic Information Systems in Hamburg, Germany, natural language processing and spatial clustering techniques are used to identify areas of potential value conflicts. Four expert workshops assess and interpret these quantitative findings. Integrating both quantitative and qualitative results, 19 general public values and a total of 9 archetypical conflicts are identified. On the basis of these results, this paper proposes a new conceptual tool of Public Value Spheres that extends the theoretical notion of public-value conflicts and helps to further account for the value-laden nature of urban space.

An evidence based approach to crime and urban design Or , can we have vitality , sustainability and security all at once ?

Abstract:The following research calls into question some of the most deeply held assumption that have been made on all sides about the relation between spatial design and security. The most important of these is perhaps the ‘safety in numbers’ argument that challenges long held beliefs that small is somehow beautiful in designing for well-working, low-risk communities. On the basis of the evidence we have presented we can argue that the benefits of a residential culture become more apparent with larger rather than smaller numbers. A no less challenging implication of this body of evidence is that the relation between crime and spatial design may not pass through the intervening variable of community formation. Again, the evidence suggests that the simple fact of human co-presence in space, coupled to simple physical features of buildings or spaces is enough to explain differences in victimization rates in different types of location and area, albeit with variations due to social factors.

Abstract:This paper provides a critical cross-disciplinary perspective on urban ecological enclaves as attempts to fulfill the dream of a good life in a safe and green urban context. We take advantage of fertilizing fields of strategic urban planning and design with fields of human geography to unfold potential ecological and societal trade-offs across different scales for the realization of such developments. Based on empirical cases across geographical regions, we exemplify such trade-offs in relation to the displacement of ecological and climatic effects, increased social discrimination and inequity among the urban population and beyond. As a way forward, we seek to intensify awareness of the shortcomings of enclave designations versus the potentials and challenges of traditional, more holistic upgrading strategies through a framework that exposes shortcomings and spans across urban sustainability scales. We propose a more nuanced approach to urban ecological enclaves, in which the regional perspective dominates while avoiding security framings. We challenge the trend of such green initiatives being planned dominantly in upper-class districts, in turn compromising collective rights. By exemplifying the shortfalls of this popular development trend, we aim to contribute to deeper-rooted societal transitions that consider more inclusionary framings of sustainable cities.

Abstract:The built environment, urban processes, and experience all work together to create the spatial environment of a city. Many urban spaces, especially those that appear to be ‘leftover’, do not reflect a set concept but are constantly questioned and recreated. Recognizing leftover spaces in an urban environment is an important aspect of the urban redevelopment process. Researchers have highlighted the difficulties, circumstances, and relevance of making good use of leftover space. To accomplish environmental and social benefits, these places can be created, changed, and incorporated into the main urban fabric; however, there is a scarcity of knowledge on how to go about constructing such environments. This study explores the visual perception of two groups of people, those with knowledge of the built environment and those with other educational backgrounds regarding leftover spaces in Wellington City. The research, which employs a mixed approach, consists of three studies, beginning with a visual preference study to better understand human perceptions, which might lead to better design solutions. The second study looked at differences in design preferences across the built environment and non-built environment participants. Finally, individuals from the built and non-built environments participants were invited to a focus group discussion for study three. To summarize, the findings demonstrated that adding vegetation is a crucial design feature. The findings refute the hypotheses of non-built environment specialists have different design perceptions for a built environment.

Abstract:The digital revolution has brought about many societal changes such as the creation of “smart cities”. The smart city concept has changed the urban ecosystem by embedding digital technologies in the city fabric to enhance the quality of life of its inhabitants. However, it has also led to some pressing issues and challenges related to data, privacy, ethics inclusion, and fairness. While the initial concept of smart cities was largely technology- and data-driven, focused on the automation of traffic, logistics and processes, this concept is currently being replaced by technology-enabled, human-centred solutions. However, this is not the end of the development, as there is now a big trend towards “design for values”. In this paper, we point out how a value-sensitive design approach could promote a more sustainable pathway of cities that better serves people and nature. Such “value-sensitive design” will have to take ethics, law and culture on board. We discuss how organising the digital world in a participatory way, as well as leveraging the concepts of self-organisation, self-regulation, and self-control, would foster synergy effects and thereby help to leverage a sustainable technological revolution on a global scale. Furthermore, a “democracy by design” approach could also promote resilience.

Abstract:In Germany, public space and its use are thought to be full of conflicts: festivalization vs. everyday quality, advertising vs. urban design, commerce vs. culture, drivers vs. strollers, demonstrators vs. tourists, private use vs. general accessibility, spontaneous, temporary appropriation vs. permanent order, and design The often conflicting expectations – also of women and men or old and young people – about public space are an expression of the increasingly heterogeneous nature of urban society. In terms of design, the pendulum swings between nostalgic kitsch, cool modern design and aesthetic neglect. In recent years, the pressure and overload of private and public advertising, road and information signs, retail and restaurant furniture and telecommunications equipment have increased. The generally accepted indicator, the agreement about what quality of form is in public space, seems to be largely lost. Too often only the city center is seen as a public space in need of planning and political attention. Main roads or district and district centers are lost from sight, let alone commercial areas. Demographic changes, a smaller, older and brighter urban population make new demands on public space, as a place where different cultures and increasingly differentiated lifestyles meet, as a place for the integration of urban society. So there is a need for action. It is not about uniform rules for the use and design of public spaces, nor about the illusion of ideal and consistent planning. Rather, it is about criteria of social and aesthetic quality, about what is appropriate in each city and each district, which should be developed and discussed in dialogue with residents, users and the public.
City 5.0: Citizen involvement in the design of future cities

Abstract:A citizen-centric view is key to channeling technological affordances into the development of future cities in which improvements are made with the quality of citizens' life in mind. This paper proposes City 5.0 as a new citizen-centric design paradigm for future cities, in which cities can be seen as markets connecting service providers with citizens as consumers. City 5.0 is dedicated to eliminating restrictions that citizens face when utilizing city services. Our design paradigm focuses on smart consumption and extends the technology-centric concept of smart city with a stronger view on citizens' roadblocks to service usage. Through a series of design workshops, we conceptualized the City 5.0 paradigm and formalized it in a semi-formal model. The applicability of the model is demonstrated using the case of a telemedical service offered by a Spanish public healthcare service provider. The usefulness of the model is validated by qualitative interviews with public organizations involved in the development of technology-based city solutions. Our contribution lies in the advancement of citizen-centric analysis and the development of city solutions for both academic and professional communities.

Abstract:Physical and social environments can affect our mental health. With increasing numbers of people living in cities, public mental health is now expanding beyond the remit of psychiatrists and psychologists. Designing to support and improve mental health has not always been an obvious priority for citymakers, even as they begin to focus on physical health – though in fact perhaps some of the greatest potential for their impact lies with mental health. Policymakers, urban planners, architects, engineers, transport specialists, developers, and others impact on mental health through their contributions to the design and delivery of the urban built environment. This chapter discusses key opportunities for smart urban design to help promote good mental health, prevent illness, and support people who have mental health challenges. We focus on green space, active space, prosocial space, and safe space across the lifespan, from ensuring safe and local play opportunities for children to empowering older people to socialize and safely navigate around their neighborhoods. Citymakers can consciously seize opportunities for sustainable improvement of population mental health, putting the research into action through policies, plans, design, development, and management. Meanwhile, more research – and its funding – is needed to realize the opportunities in this high impact field.

Abstract:Smart city rhetoric stresses both citizens’ well-being and urban efficiency; however, critical perspectives suggest a worsening of existing societal inequalities for less-productive citizens, posing implications for how urban planners should incorporate smart technology. We examine the perceptions of elderly residents regarding Singapore’s Smart Nation implementation in their communities. The elderly find that technological advancements deepen existing divides and suggest that true participation and social relationships are required for successful adoption of urban smart systems. We provide commentary on the tensions created between (1) productivity and efficiency as goals of the smart nation and (2) the inclusion and participation of older citizens in urban planning decisions.

Abstract:In an impending urban age where the majority of the world's population will live in cities, it is critical that we improve our understanding of the strengths and limitations of existing city designs to ensure they are safe, clean, can deliver health co-benefits and importantly, are sustainable into the future. To enable this, a systematic and efficient means of performing inter- and intra-city comparisons based on urban form is required. Until now, methods for comparing cities have been limited by scalability, often reliant upon non-standardised local input data that can be costly and difficult to obtain. To address this, we have developed a unique approach to determine the mix, distribution, and composition of neighbourhood types in cities based on dimensions of block size and regularity, sorted by a self-organising map. We illustrate the utility of the method to provide an understanding of the underlying city morphology by overlaying spatially standardised city metrics such as air pollution and transport activity across a set of 1667 global cities with populations exceeding 300,000. The unique approach reports associations between specific mixes of neighbourhood typologies and quantities of moving vehicles (r=0.97), impervious surfaces (r=0.86), and air pollution levels (aerosol optical depth r=0.58 and NO$_{2}$ r=0.57). What this illustrates, is that this unique approach can identify the characteristics and neighbourhood mixes of well-performing urban areas while also producing unique `city fingerprints' that can be used to provide new metrics, insights, and drive improvements in city design for the future.

Abstract:Urban public spaces significantly influence public perceptions and experiences. This study, conducted in Beijing, China, employs structural equation modeling (SEM) and Friedman testing to analyze key criteria—safety, attractiveness, facilities, activities, and social environment—that impact perceptions of both virtual and physical public spaces. The findings reveal that attractiveness is the most influential criterion, significantly shaping public opinion. Facilities and activities follow, highlighting the necessity for well-equipped amenities and engaging social activities. The social environment also plays a crucial role, emphasizing the need for spaces that foster social interactions. Safety, while important, is less influential compared to the other criteria. These results underscore the importance of aesthetic considerations, well-equipped amenities, and vibrant social environments in urban design. This study provides actionable insights for urban designers and planners, advocating for a balanced approach that prioritizes these criteria to enhance the quality of life in urban areas. By focusing on these aspects, urban planners can create more effective and satisfying public spaces that meet the diverse needs of the community, ensuring that both physical and virtual spaces contribute positively to urban living.

Abstract:Current spatial changes involving broad urban landscapes affect people's perceptions of their surroundings, sense of place, and attachment to a place, constituting a disruption to these. As a result, on a social scale, they translate into people's well-being. The following study of the impact of large-scale architectural and urban developments on the place of residence is based on the assumption that physical space determines the quality of life in the living place and the changes in the process condition residents to adapt to their new surroundings—based on the three pillars of place, people, and process (3Ps). The article consists of two parts. The first is theoretical, which conceptualises spatial change based on the theory of human dependence on place. The second part–an empirical study—discusses the transformation of the post-industrial area of Bicocca (Milan), which, 40 years after the intervention, has led to conclusions and recommendations for urban planning. The results demonstrate the different sensitivities of the urban areas to the process of functional–spatial change, the essence of the accessibility of public space, public facilities, and transport infrastructure. The planning process can positively influence social adaptation to spatial change mitigation. Residential areas may be subject to additional protection procedures. The study is relevant to a sustainable planning process in the inevitable transformation of urban areas. The interdisciplinary nature of the issue prompts the integration of research findings and knowledge transfer in the socio-technological subsystem (STS).

Abstract:The Sentient House project is an investigation into approaches that the artistdesigner can take to better involve the public in developing a critical perspective on pervasive technology in the home and the surrounding environment. Using Interaction Design approaches including workshops, surveys, rapidprototyping and critical thinking, this thesis suggests a framework for developing a more participatory atmosphere for Critical Design. As the world becomes more connected, and smarter, citizens concerns are being sidelined in favour of rapid progress and solutionism. Many of these initiatives are backed by government and commercial concerns who may not have the publics best interest at heart. The designs and approaches generated from this public participation seek to provide an outlet for a more agonistic debate and to develop tools and approaches to engage the public in questioning and addressing how technology affects them in the future. The outcomes of this research suggest that the public is receptive to a more active involvement in designing their digital future, and that the designer can be a critical component in revealing hidden consequences and alternative pathways for a more transparent and desirable future.
