Abstract:We study the excitation conditions of the supported field modes, as well as the spontaneous decay property of a two-level quantum emitter coupled to photonic structures containing topological insulators (TIs) and left-handed materials. Within the proper field quantization scheme, the spontaneous decay rates of dipoles with different polarizations are expressed in forms of the Green's functions. We find that in the proposed structure, the variation in the topological magnetoelectric polarizability (TMP) has a deterministic effect on the excitation of different field modes. As the result, the spontaneous decay property of the quantum emitter can be engineered. For a dipole placed in different spatial regions, the spontaneous decay feature indicates a dominant contribution from the waveguide modes, the surface plasmon modes or the free vacuum modes. Moreover, a special kind of the surface plasmon modes displaying asymmetric density of states at the interfaces, becomes legal in the presence of nontrivial TIs. These phenomena manifest the feasibility in controlling dipole emissions via manipulations of the topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect. Our results have potential applications in quantum technologies relied on the accurate control over light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Photonic generation of ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle and doublet pulses is experimentally demonstrated using a cascaded electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and semiconductor optical amplifier by exploiting a combination of cross-absorption modulation and cross-gain modulation. The polarities and shapes of UWB monocycle and doublet pulses can be simply controlled using an optical time-delay controller and the reverse voltage applied to the EAM. The corresponding measured rf spectra meet the UWB criteria.

Abstract:We demonstrate a universal approach for generating high-order diffraction catastrophe beams, specifically for Swallowtail-type beams (abbreviated as Swallowtail beams), using diffraction catastrophe theory that was defined by potential functions depending on the control and state parameters. The three-dimensional curved caustic surfaces of these Swallowtail catastrophe beams are derived by the potential functions. Such beams are generated by mapping the cross sections of the high-order control parameter space to the corresponding transverse plane. Owing to the flexibility of the high-order diffraction catastrophe, these Swallowtail beams can be tuned to a diverse range of optical light structures. Owing to the similarity in their frequency spectra, we found that the Swallowtail beams change into low-order Pearcey beams under given conditions during propagation. Our experimental results are in close agreement with our simulated results. Such fantastic catastrophe beams that can propagate along curved trajectories are likely to give rise to new applications in micromachining and optical manipulation, furthermore, these diverse caustic beams will pave the way for the tailoring of arbitrarily accelerating caustic beams.

Abstract:We investigate the process of dispersive waves (DWs) emitted from Gaussian pulse (GP) with an initial quadratic spectral phase (QSP). We show that the radiation of DWs is strongly affected by the QSP parameter. The conversion efficiency and resonant frequency of DWs are effectively enhanced and controlled by tuning the sign and magnitude of the initial QSP. At variance with the case of pure GP, the DWs emission is first advanced and then delayed for negatively QSP modulated GPs; while it is always delayed for positively QSP modulated GPs. We present a modified phase-matching formula that allows us to predict DWs spectral peaks. The resonant frequencies predicted by the phase-matching condition are in very good agreement with the results obtained from the numerical simulation based on the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The results presented here can be utilized as a effective tool to manipulate DWs emission for applications such as frequency conversion.

Abstract:Materials with hyperbolic dispersion have recently garnered much attention in the optical and quantum communities due to their potential for controlling large- $k$ waves over a broad wavelength range. Their rarity has motivated many fundamental studies at microwave frequencies to improve their applications with full utilization of large- $k$ waves. Here, we report that hyperbolic dispersion can be mimicked by exploiting the structural dispersion of electromagnetic modes in waveguides filled with anisotropic dielectric materials. As demonstrated, the material parameters in the waveguide are subtly designed, and effective hyperbolic dispersion is achieved, which can reduce the dielectric loss and nonlocal effects related to the finite thickness of the discrete constituent elements of metamaterials at microwave frequencies. Numerical simulations are performed, including negative and anomalous refractions, negative reflection, and directional hyperbolic polaritons to validate the analytical results. The present method paves the way for the development of hyperbolic metamaterials at microwave frequencies.

Abstract:<p>Dispersive waves (DWs) radiation in optical fibers allow to excite frequencies in spectral regions that are otherwise difficult to access. However, the resonant emission is weak and phase matching inhibits its shaping, making it ineffective in many applications. Here, we numerically investigated that DWs generated from high-energy pulses propagating in nonlinear optical fibers can be controlled through spectral phase modulation. Using tunable asymmetric and oscillatory temporal pulse shapes obtained by cubic and quadratic spectral phase modulation, we excite a multiple emission process that strongly enhances the energy and peaks of DWs. Successive collisions between the shed soliton and multiple secondary peaks of the asymmetric pulse give the mechanism to stimulate various resonant frequencies. The whole process can be precisely controlled by simply adjusting the spectral phase modulation structure without the need to change the fiber length. This radiation is either reduced or enhanced by the Raman effect depending on whether the third-order dispersion is positive or negative. Our results provide a novel strategy to manipulate DWs emission and particularly to boost the DWs energy in optical fibers that may be relevant in the development of novel electromagnetic sources for broadband supercontinuum and on-chip frequency-comb generation.</p>

Abstract:A method is proposed to control the transverse motion and x-ray emission of electrons accelerated in a wakefield driven by a laser pulse with transverse chirp. The dispersion of the laser and the nonuniform refractive index of the plasma channel result in transverse laser oscillations, which leads to transverse oscillations of the wake. Electrons accelerated inside the wake also undergo oscillations generating a wiggler like motion. Both the oscillation period and amplitude can be controlled by tuning the laser spatial chirp and the plasma channel width. As a result, the far field spectral distribution of the x-ray emission can be flexibly manipulated.
Free electron laser spectrum control with a quasiperiodic wiggler configuration

Abstract:Recently, we have studied an unusual wiggler magnet configuration comprising two conventional periodic wigglers. It was shown that if the periods of the two constituent wiggler components are not integrally but irrationally related then considerable radiation is generated at frequencies that are irrational multiples of the fundamental radiation frequency. The generation of these irrationally related harmonics modifies considerably the basic free electron laser (FEL) mechanism and as such they may be used to manipulate the FEL spectrum. In this contribution, we consider the spontaneous emission of electrons in such a quasiperiodic wiggler structure with and without the electron energy spread effects. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate that significant radiation can be generated simultaneously at both the usual FEL harmonics and irrationally related frequencies. When the wiggler parameters are appropriately adjusted, the usual integrally related FEL harmonics are suppressed considerably. This feature may be used to relieve the mirror degradation problem in some ultraviolet and X-ray FELs.

Abstract:Dispersive waves (DWs) are ubiquitous in nonlinear optical systems that host optical solitons. In particular, DWs in soliton fiber lasers have attracted continuous interest over the past decades since they are closely related to laser soliton instabilities. Meanwhile, intra-cavity DWs also play important roles in solion interactions. While previous studies mostly focused on their spectral properties, characterizations and manipulations of the intra-cavity DWs in the time domain remain unexplored. Here, we report the experimental studies on temporal structures of intra-cavity DWs, unveiling their exponentially-decaying profiles which can be manipulated by varying cavity parameters, following a simple analytic model. We also studied the evolution dynamics of the intra-cavity DWs under abrupt cavity parameter variations. We observed that both the amplitude and the width of the DW waveform went through variations as the pump power was changed, while their evolution trajectories followed intimately that of the soliton energy. These results provide insights into the DW emission mechanism in mode-locked lasers, and the control methods of intra-cavity DWs may find potential applications in the fields of ultrafast pulse generation and soliton dynamics.

Abstract:A stabilization scheme is proposed for the dynamics of breather waves induced by the coherent-seed modulation instability based on manipulation of phase-space trajectory. Theoretical and numerical analysis show that carefully dispersion- and nonlinearity-managed cascades of fiber configuration allows the system evolution to be stabilized around an elliptic center point, forming stable pulse trains with ultrahigh contrast efficiently. We also demonstrate that the scheme proposed works equally well for near-separatrix dynamics. Our results provide an alternative means to control the unsteady nonlinear waves by abruptly changing the waveguide properties.
Accessing and Manipulating Dispersive Shock Waves in a Nonlinear and Nonlocal Rydberg Medium

Abstract:Dispersive shock waves (DSWs) are fascinating wave phenomena occurring in media when nonlinearity overwhelms dispersion (or diffraction). Creating DSWs with low generation power and realizing their active controls is desirable but remains a longstanding challenge. Here, we propose a scheme to generate weak-light DSWs and realize their manipulations in an atomic gas involving strongly interacting Rydberg states under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that for a two-dimensional (2D) Rydberg gas a weak nonlocality of optical Kerr nonlinearity can significantly change the edge speed of DSWs and induces a singular behavior of the edge speed and hence an instability of the DSWs. However, by increasing the degree of the Kerr nonlocality, the singular behavior of the edge speed and the instability of the DSWs can be suppressed. We also show that in a 3D Rydberg gas, DSWs can be created and propagate stably when the system works in the intermediate nonlocality regime. Due to the EIT effect and the giant nonlocal Kerr nonlinearity contributed by the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction, DSWs found here have extremely low generation power. In addition, an active control of DSWs can be realized; in particular, they can be stored and retrieved with high efficiency and fidelity through switching off and on a control laser field. The results reported here are useful not only for unveiling intriguing physics of DSWs but also for finding promising applications of nonlinear and nonlocal Rydberg media.

Photoionization-assisted, high-efficiency emission of dispersive wave in gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers

Abstract:We demonstrate that the phase-matched dispersive wave (DW) emission within the resonance band of a 25-cm-long gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) can be strongly enhanced by the photoionization effect of the pump pulse. In the experiments we observe that as the pulse energy increases, the pump pulse gradually shifts to shorter wavelengths due to soliton-plasma interactions. When the central wavelength of the blueshifting soliton is close to the resonance band of the HC-PCF, high-efficiency energy transfer from the pump light to the DW in the visible region can be obtained. During this DW emission process, we also observe that the spectral center of the DW gradually shifts to longer wavelengths leading to a slightly-increased DW bandwidth, which can be well explained as the consequence of phase-matched coupling between the pump pulse and the DW. In particular, at an input pulse energy of 6 uJ, the spectral ratio of the DW at the fiber output is measured to be as high as ~53% together with a conversion efficiency of ~19%. These experimental results, explained by numerical simulations, pave the way to high-brightness light sources based on high-efficiency frequency-upconversion processes in gas-filled HC-PCFs.

Abstract:Coherent dispersive wave emission, as an important phenomenon of soliton dynamics, manifests itself in multiple platforms of nonlinear optics from fibre waveguides to integrated photonics. Limited by its resonance nature, efficient generation of coherent dispersive wave with ultra-broad bandwidth has, however, proved difficult to realize. Here, we unveil a new regime of soliton dynamics in which the dispersive wave emission process strongly couples with the splitting dynamics of the driving pulse. High-order dispersion and self-steepening effects, accumulated over soliton self-compression, break the system symmetry, giving rise to high-efficiency generation of coherent dispersive wave in the ultraviolet region. Simultaneously, asymmetric soliton splitting results in the appearance of a temporally-delayed ultrashort pulse with high intensity, overlapping and copropagating with the dispersive wave pulse. Intense cross-phase modulations lead to octave-wide broadening of the dispersive wave spectrum, covering 200-400 nm wavelengths. The highly-coherent, octave-wide ultraviolet spectrum, generated from the simple capillary fibre set-up, is in great demand for time-resolved spectroscopy, ultrafast electron microscopy and frequency metrology applications, and the critical role of the secondary pulse in this process reveals some new opportunities for all-optical control of versatile soliton dynamics.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the extended spectral broadening via a spectral sinusoidal phase-modulated Gaussian pulse. The modulated pulse can create two predominant solitons that collide with each other to form a rogue wave (RW), resulting in an RW-induced dispersive wave emission. This leads to a further spectral broadening beyond the soliton-induced dispersive wave and can be manipulated by tuning the phase modulation parameters. Before the appearance of RW, the modulated pulse-propagation scenario is governed by the optical Newton's cradles and the optical event horizons. These complex dynamics reveal a new method for controlling the RW generation as well as spectral broadening at relatively low power levels. Our results have potential implications for controllable excitation of RWs and broadband supercontinuum generation.

Abstract:Coherent wave control is of key importance across a broad range of fields such as electromagnetics, photonics, and acoustics. It enables us to amplify or suppress the outgoing waves via engineering amplitudes and phases of multiple incidences. However, within a purely spatially (temporally) engineered medium, coherent wave control requires the frequency of the associated incidences to be identical (opposite). In this work, we break this conventional constraint by generalizing coherent wave control into a spatiotemporally engineered medium, i.e., the system featuring a dynamic interface. Owing to the broken translational symmetry in space and time, both the subluminal and superluminal interfaces allow interference between scattered waves regardless of their different frequencies and wavevectors. Hence, one can flexibly eliminate the backward- or forward-propagating waves scattered from the dynamic interfaces by controlling the incident amplitudes and phases. Our work not only presents a generalized way for reshaping arbitrary waveforms but also provides a promising paradigm to generate ultrafast pulses using low-frequency signals. We have also implemented suppression of forward-propagating waves in microstrip transmission lines with fast photodiode switches.
