Abstract:Alfred Wegener published the first presentation of his theory of continental drift in English in the British monthly popular journal Discovery in the May issue of the year 1922. This is two years earlier than the first full translation of the third edition of his book The Origin of Continents and Oceans by J. G. A. Skerl with an introduction by John W. Evans. In his article, Wegener summarizes the theory and the evidence on which it was conceived and tested. A very interesting feature of the article is a Pangaea reconstruction on a stereographic projection on which the South Pole is located near a point on Antarctica closest to South Africa and the North Pole in the ocean some distance north of the Bering Strait. This is surprising, as in all other Pangaea reconstructions by Wegener, the South Pole is located in the ocean south of Pangaea, whereas the North Pole in an inland sea in the present location of the Arctic Ocean. Wegener implies in his short article that the entire Gondwana Land may have moved north during the Carboniferous to give rise to Hercynian shortening, a point hitherto not mentioned by the historians of the theory of continental drift.
