The channel is modeled by the Monte-Carlo ray tracing technique. The impulse response and path loss at different wavelengths in variable water conditions are analyzed in detail.

Abstract:A novel optical communication scheme of 2D pattern transfer model based on multi-beam array in complex channel is proposed. The model makes full use of the strong scattering of channel.Spreading of the beams produces an overlapping area at the receiver plane.The reconstruction of the initial 2D pattern spatial position information can be performed by an imaging optics system within the area.The introduction of apparent parameters reduces the complex beam propagation inside two kinds of mediums to a brief propagation only inside air medium,which simplifies the theoretical analysis.A proof-of-concept experiment employs a micro lens array each diameter of which is 15 mm and sea water and atmosphere channel with length of 12.65 m to simulate the strong scattering in real case.The results indicate good feasibility of the proposed model.

Abstract:In underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC), absorption and multiple scattering may cause beam dispersion in both time and space domains and degrade the received intensity. The spatial characteristics of UWOC links have not been studied extensively, especially in multiple-source scenario. In this paper, we consider two kinds of light sources link geometries, i.e., linear array and circular array, and propose a weighted double exponential polynomial (WDEP) to model the irradiance distribution of general multiple-source UWOC links with arbitrary numbers of light sources. Numerical results suggest that the proposed WDEP model fits well with the results of Monte Carlo simulations in turbid water environment.

Abstract:With the development of marine research and exploitation, underwater optical communications have been widely used in numerous scenes. However, seawater would absorb and scatter the optical signal, causing the energy attenuation and the time-domain broadening of the pulse. In this work, based on the basic optical properties of seawater, the Monte Carlo method is applied to simulate the energy attenuation and the time-domain response of the light pulse in relatively turbid waters. The feasibility of optical communication in relatively turbid waters is estimated, with an interesting finding that the requirement for optical link alignment can be significantly relaxed in turbid waters.

Abstract:Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has been widely used in the construction of underwater communication network for the advantages of high data rates, small latency, high flexibility and scalability.However, due to the absorption and scattering effects of seawater, the spatial characteristics of UWOC links have not been studied extensively, especially in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenario.A linear array MIMO UWOC link geometry was considered and a weighted exponential function polynomial (WEFP) model was proposed to characterize the photon irradiance distribution at the receiving plane of general MIMO UWOC links with arbitrary numbers of light sources.Numerical results suggest that the proposed WEFP model fits well with the results of Monte Carlo simulations in turbid water environment.

Abstract:Ocean observation system that involves multiple underwater vehicles and seafloor nodes plays an important role in better learning the ocean, where underwater wireless communication is mandatory for massive data interaction. Optical communication that has wide bandwidth and comprehensive working distance is the preferred method compared to acoustic and other methods. However, the presence of directionality makes the optical method difficult to use especially when the transceiver is equipped on a motive vehicle. In this study, an underwater free-space optical communication method of transmitting information is proposed. Characteristics of underwater optical transmission, as well as the photoelectric signal processing and modulation and demodulation algorithms, are studied and modeled. New approach for realizing underwater free-space optical communication is proposed and simulated. A prototype including a free-space optical transmitter and a receiver is developed; tests in different scenarios were carried out, and the results were observed: (1) by using the minimum number of LEDs, the effect of uniform lighting in space is achieved, and the transmitter coverage reaches 160°. (2) When the power of the transmitter is 10 W and the communication rate is 1 Mbps, the maximum communication distance reaches 13 m.

Abstract:Monte-Carlo numerical simulation (MCNS) is used to study the characteristics of an underwater scattering channel for an LED source in different types of water. The high scattering effect of turbid water significantly dispersed the signal's intensity distribution and broadened the half power angle. An empirical path loss model is proposed and was proved effective by simulations in different types of water. Abstract:Due to the uneven distribution of the underwater laser transmission channels, the transmission beam will be affected by water absorption and scattering effects, which induce inter-symbol interference and the degradation of link performance. Based on the binomial Henyey–Greenstein scattering phase function and considering the forward and backward effects, the pulse response expression of the non-line-of-sight underwater laser channel is derived. The effectiveness of the underwater photon transmission channel model established is simulated and verified by the Monte Carlo method. The fitting effects in the coastal waters between the theoretical calculation value of channel impulse response and simulation are better. Under the same simulation parameters, the pulse-broadening factor in coastal waters is higher than that in harbor waters, and the time-domain broadening effect of laser pulse transmission in harbor waters is large. When the asymmetry factor is large, the influence of front scattering on pulse broadening is greater.

Abstract:A comprehensive multiparameter model is proposed for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) channels to integrate the effects of absorption, scattering, and dynamic turbulence. The simulation accuracy is further improved by the combined use of the subharmonic method and the strict sampling constraint method by comparing the phase structure function with the theoretical value. The average light intensity and scintillation index are analyzed using the channel parameters of absorption, scattering, turbulence, flow velocity, and transmission distance. Under weak or medium turbulence, the bit error rate (BER) performance can be effectively improved by increasing the transmitting light power. The power penalty of a 50 m UWOC channel is 5.8 dBm from pure seawater to ocean water and 1.0 dBm from weak turbulence to medium turbulence, with the BER threshold of 10−6.

Abstract:The underwater scattering channel for line-of-sight (LOS) underwater optical wireless communications in the transmission window (wavelength of 400nm-600nm) is modeled by a ray tracing technique. The inherent seawater optical properties, the scattering and absorption of the suspending particles, are represented by one single parameter-chlorophyll concentration (CC). Path losses for different waters and different ranges are simulated. The influences of some system parameters, such as beam divergence, field of view, and misalignment, to the link path loss are studied. The communication bit-error-rate performance is evaluated based on simulated path losses.

Abstract:In underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC), multiple scattering will affect the temporal and spatial distribution of photons, which therefore bring difficulties to the study of channel characteristics including channel modeling. In this paper, we consider the single-source UWOC links in two cases, i.e., the light source and receiving plane are aligned or misaligned, and propose a closed-form function to model the spatial–temporal joint behavior of UWOC links. Numerical results suggest that the proposed function fits well with Monte Carlo simulation results in various water environment and link distance, and can overcome the misalignment with small deviation angle.

Abstract:The underwater wireless slant optical link is a more generalized type of communication links compared with vertical and horizontal links. Since several oceanic factors including temperature and salinity variations with the seawater depth, the performance of the slant link for the underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) will be overestimated under the assumptions of constant temperature and salinity. To this end, this paper proposes a model of slant link considering the depth-dependent and inclination-angle-dependent turbulence and scattering that are the main causes of multipath fading for UWOC. Specifically, to model the turbulence-induced fluctuations of light fields, the random phase screen method is exploited, where the power spectrum of refractive index is calculated using the oceanic turbulence optical power spectrum (OTOPS) model and the light fields at the receivers are derived by the angular spectrum method. To emulate the scattering-induced divergence, the scattering phase function is applied, where the motion directions and coordinates of light spots propagating among phase screens are deduced using Rodrigues' Rotation Formula. Simulation results demonstrate the effects of the depths and inclination angles of transmitters on the performance of UWOC by analyzing the scintillation index, channel impulse response, and BER (bit error rate).

Abstract:This paper aims to address the challenges of short optical communication distances and high Bit Error Rates (BERs) caused by seawater absorption, scattering, and underwater turbulence. This paper establishes an optical communication channel model based on the Monte Carlo method and simulates and analyzes the process of received optical power attenuation when light is transmitted underwater due to absorption and scattering. The simulation model focuses on the influence of seawater type, transmission distance, receiver position, and angle on the received optical power attenuation. The results of this simulation will provide theoretical support for the development of prototype underwater optical communication systems and experiments in complex environments. To solve the long-range weak signal reception and processing issues in underwater optical wireless communication systems, this paper proposes the design and implementation of an underwater optical wireless communication system using optimized on-off keying high-power light-emitting diode/laser diode modulation technology and avalanche photodiode (APD)/photomultiplier (PMT) receiver modules. In addition, this paper describes the design of the underwater optical communication host computer software, which provides functions such as mode selection, BER monitoring, and file transfer. To test the performance of the proposed system, this paper conducts experiments in a 35 m long pool, fixed platform, and underwater mobile platform, as well as cross-air-water interface optical communication performance test experiments in a complex hydrological environment. The results show that the system achieved a 35 m underwater medium communication distance, transmission rate of 5–20 Mbps, and cross-domain wireless optical communication function under the condition of a BER of less than 10−6. The experiments also revealed that the communication distance decreases as the turbidity of the water body increases and the PMT receiver module selected at the receiver end has a longer communication distance than the APD receiver module. Overall, this paper demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed technology for underwater optical communication systems in complex waters, providing theoretical and data support for the next engineering practice.

Abstract:With the continuous development of ocean exploration technology, people put forward higher requirements for highspeed and long-distance underwater wireless communication technology. Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has attracted the attention of many scholars because of its high transmission rate, large capacity, low power consumption and small size. In this paper, an underwater communication scheme using blue-green excitation (532nm) as signal source is presented from the point of view of hardware and software design. This paper establishes a model by mathematical method, analyses many factors that affect the state of underwater optical communication link, simulates the real underwater channel environment by Monte Carlo method, establishes end-to-end signal strength model, and finally simulates and verifies the communication system by MATLAB software.

Abstract:The air molecules and suspended aerosols help to build non-line-of-sight (NLOS) optical scattering communication links using carriers from near infrared to visible light and ultraviolet bands. This paper proposes channel models over such broad spectra. Wavelength dependent Rayleigh and Mie scattering and absorption coefficients of particles are analytically obtained first. They are applied to the ray tracing based Monte Carlo method, which models the photon scattering angle from the scatterer and propagation distance between two consecutive scatterers. Communication link path loss is studied under different operation conditions, including visibility, particle density, wavelength, and communication range. It is observed that optimum communication performances exist across the wavelength under specific atmospheric conditions. Infrared, visible light and ultraviolet bands show their respective features as conditions vary.

Abstract:In underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC), absorption and scattering characterize the link properties since photons may suffer these two processes with energy loss and direction change, respectively, when interacting with water molecules or suspended particles. In this work, we consider the effects of absorption and scattering on the probability distribution, i.e., normalized intensity distribution, of photons in space and time domains. Our prior work proposed a stochastic channel model to represent the spatial–temporal probability distribution of propagated photons only for nonscattering and single scattering components of UWOC links. However, multiple scattering will dominate the scattering behavior of the underwater environment with long communication distance and/or more turbid water type. In this work, we take into account all three types of components including nonscattering, single and multiple scattering, and present a more general stochastic channel model which fits well with Monte Carlo simulations in turbid water environment such as coastal and harbor water. Based on the proposed channel model, we also evaluate the performance of path loss, scattering richness, and attenuation of UWOC links. Numerical results suggest that multiple scattering can compensate the path loss overestimated by traditional approaches. Furthermore, scattering richness and attenuation tend to increase but have opposite effects to raise and reduce the received probabilities of higher order scattered photons, respectively, as link range increases.

Abstract:This paper describes and assesses underwater channel models for optical wireless communication. Models considered are: inherent optical properties; vector radiative transfer theory with the small-angle analytical solution and numerical solutions of the vector radiative transfer equation (Monte Carlo, discrete ordinates and invariant imbedding). Variable composition and refractive index, in addition to background light, are highlighted as aspects of the channel which advanced models must represent effectively. Models are assessed against these aspects in terms of their ability to predict transmitted power and spatial and temporal distributions of light a specified distance from a transmitter. Monte Carlo numerical methods are found to be the most versatile but are compromised by long computational time and greater errors than other methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an optical wireless communication system model whose channel consists of three parts: underwater channel, atmosphere channel and the interface between air and water. To better approximate the reality, besides the effect of random air-water interface, we consider the impact of ocean current which leads to misalignment between the transmitter and receiver. On the basis of this model, we explore the communication viability and simulate its link gain and time delay. Monte Carlo simulation results show that the dynamic air-water interface extends the communication opportunities, especially when there is no direct path between the underwater nodes and airborne base station.

Abstract:The underwater turbulence channel is modelled and a unified statistical distribution is applied for characterizing orbital angular momentum (OAM) propagation in underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems. Based on Monte-Carlo simulations, the effects of turbulences are characterized by the multiple phase screens model considering both the coherence width and scintillation index. The phase screen samples are processed by the randomized spectral sampling discrete Fourier transform (DFT) technique. To validate the propagated field distribution, both the phase structure function and optical transfer function are derived and evaluated with the aid of ensemble-averaged results. The Generalized Gamma Distribution (GGD) enriched by an additional independent parameter is applied for modelling the probability density function (PDF) of both the reference-channels, fluctuating irradiance as well as the intermodal crosstalk irradiance between different OAM modes. Furthermore, based on the PDF, the performance metrics of both single input multiple output (SISO) and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems are analyzed, based on the average capacity, the bit-error rate and the outage probability.

Abstract:Building a reliable and optimum underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system requires identifying all potential factors that cause the attenuation and dispersion of the optical signal. The radiative transfer equation (RTE) solution can be utilised to conclude these essential design parameters to build an optimum UOWC system. RTE has various numerical and simplified analytical solutions with varying reliability and capability scope. Many scientists consider the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method to be a consistent and widely accepted approach to formulating an RTE solution, which models the propagation of photons through various underwater channel environments. MCS recently attracted attention because we can build a reliable model for underwater environments. Based on such a model, this report demonstrates the resulting received optical power distribution as an output for an array of emulation inputs, including transmitted light's spatial and temporal distribution, channel link regimes, and associated impairments. This study includes a survey component, which presents the required framework's foundation to establish a valid RTE model, which leads to solutions with different scopes and depths that can be drawn for practical UOWC use cases. Hence, this work shows how underlying modelling elements can influence a solution technique, including inherent optical properties (IOPs), apparent optical properties (AOPs), and the potential limitations of various photon scattering function formats. The work introduces a novel derivation of mathematical equations for single- and multiple-light-pulse propagation in homogeneous and inhomogeneous channels, forming the basis for MCS-based UOWC studies. The reliability of MCS implementation is assessed using compliance with the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) and leveraging the Henyey–Greenstein phase function with full-scale random selection. As part of the tutorial component in this work, the MCS inner working is manifested using an object-oriented design method. Therefore, this work targets researchers interested in using MCS for UOWC research in general and UOWC photon propagation in seawater channel modelling in general.
