Abstract:The following note reports on a tractable route to account for higher-order products of T 2 associated with 2 n -fold, electron excitations within a coupled cluster doubles (CCD) framework by invoking arguments from either the factorization theorem of many-body perturbation theory and/or expectation-value coupled cluster (XCC) theory. For the current work, we specifically focus on comparatively cheap ways to account for higher-rank tensors associated with quadruple (e.g., T 4 ) and hextuple (e.g., T 6 ) excitations using products of T 2 only, and further demonstrate such techniques' role in capturing the strong correlation of the half-filled, 8 and 10-site, 1-D Hubbard model. We note that at the onset of "strong" correlation for these examples, the standard CCD method diverges. However, we find that the underlying methods' ability to account for strong correlation improves by folding these higher-rank operators into a functionally T 2 -only theory to form iterative and perturbative analogs of augmented CCD. We motivate the use of factorized methods by analyzing the protocol for obtaining energy corrections associated with T 4 and T 6 . One highlight of this analysis is that energy corrections associated with T 6 are shown to scale as O(N10) whenever "vertical", factorized intermediates are constructed, making the utility of these techniques clear when compared to the O(N14) algorithm that explicitly accounts for hextuple excitations.
