Abstract:A magnetic biochar sulfonic acid was prepared and characterized by fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder x-ray diffraction technology, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and vibrating sample magnetometer techniques. The prepared catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity for synthesis of spiro-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine derivatives via one-pot three-component reaction of 1H-pyrazol-5-amine, isatin and 3-oxo-3-phenylpropanenitrile. The catalyst could be readily recovered and reused several times without an obvious decay of catalytic performance.

Abstract:Certain bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) possess promising catalytic properties for electrochemical energy conversion. Herein, we report a facile method for the one-step synthesis of porous dendritic PtNi NCs in aqueous solution at room temperature that contrasts with the traditional multistep thermal decomposition approach. The dendritic PtNi NCs assembled by interconnected arms are efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. This direct and efficient method is favorable for the up-scaled synthesis of active catalysts used in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Bimetallic Pt-based nanodendrites are of particular interest in various catalytic applications due to their high surface areas and low densities. Herein, we provide a facile method for one-pot synthesis of PtRu nanodendrites via the co-reduction of Pt and Ru precursors in oleylamine by H2. CoNi Alloy Nanoparticles Confined in N-Doped Porous Carbon as an Efficient and Versatile Catalyst for Reductive Amination of Levulinic Acid/Esters to N -Substituted Pyrrolidones

Abstract:Highly efficient transformation of renewable biomass and its derivatives into high-value-added chemicals and biofuels over non-noble-metal catalysts is attractive but challenging. Herein, we developed non-noble CoNi alloy nanoparticles confined in N-doped porous carbon (CoNi@NC) via simple pyrolysis of the metal–organic framework (MOF) precursor at 900 °C under an inert atmosphere. The as-obtained CoNi@NC catalyst exhibited higher performance than monometallic Co@NC and Ni@NC catalysts in the reductive amination of levulinic acid (LA) with benzylamine to N-benzyl-5-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (BMP) under mild conditions of 130 °C and 3 MPa H2 for 6 h, achieving a full conversion of LA and a ≥ 99% yield of BMP. Detailed characterizations substantiated that multifunctional support and the significant synergistic effect between Co and Ni markedly enhanced the catalytic performance. Furthermore, CoNi@NC manifested outstanding recyclability (reusable 20 cycles without loss of activity), which was attributed to the well-dispersed CoNi alloy nanoparticles confined in the N-doped porous carbon and the anchoring of N species to metal nanoparticles. Additionally, the resultant CoNi@NC catalyst can be successfully applied in the one-pot transformation of LA/esters with amines/nitroarenes/nitriles to the corresponding N-substituted pyrrolidones, as well as the reductive amination of other carbonyl compounds with benzylamine to form N-heterocyclic compounds. Moreover, CoNi@NC enabled us to catalyze the continuous reductive amination of LA with amines in a trickle-bed reactor, which is a more promising, efficient, highly atomically economic, and green synthetic methodology, and exhibited excellent stability during the reaction over 36 h.

Abstract:Multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that possess permanent porosity are promising catalysts in organic transformation. Herein, we report the construction of a hierarchical MOF functionalized with basic aliphatic amine groups and polyvinylpyrrolidone-capped platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs). The post-synthetic covalent modification of organic ligands increases basic site density in the MOF, and simultaneously introduce mesopores to create a hierarchically porous structure. The multifunctional MOF is capable of catalyzing a sequential Knoevenagel condensation-hydrogenation-intramolecular cyclization reaction. The unique selective reduction of nitro group to intermediate hydroxylamine by Pt NPs supported on MOF, followed by intramolecular cyclization with cyano group to afford an excellent yield (up to 92%) to the uncommon quinoline N-oxides over quinolines. The hierarchical MOF and polyvinylpyrrolidone capping agent on Pt NPs synergistically facilitate the enrichment of substrates, and thus lead to high activity in the reduction-intramolecular cyclization reaction. The bioactivity assay indicates that the synthesized quinoline N-oxides evidently inhibit the proliferation of lung cancer cells. Our findings demonstrated the feasibility of MOF-catalyzed direct synthesis of bioactive molecules from readily available compounds under mild conditions.

Abstract:<p>A simple two-step synthetic strategy for the preparation of Ni-Fe bimetallic nanoparticles with nitrogen doped carbon shell and support (/NC) is successfully developed. Biomass longan aril serves not only as carbon source for catalyst supporting, but also a shell forming material and nitrogen doping receptor. When serving as electrocatalysts for oxygen electrode reaction, such bimetallic composite exhibits superior bi-functional electrocatalytic activities towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Benefiting from the high-conductive carbon shell and the coordination effect between NiFe alloy and nitrogen doped porous carbon support, the resultant /NC achieved high durability over ORR and OER.</p>

Abstract:Branched Pd nanodendrites have been synthesized by a very simple method, which have displayed substantially enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity compared with that of commercial Pd/C catalysts. The Pd nanodendrites show 4.8 times more activity on the basis of an equivalent noble metal mass for the ORR than the commercial Pd/C catalysts. Moreover, the Pd nanodendrite catalysts also exhibit superior ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) activity, making them excellent candidates as high performance multifunctional catalysts for both ORR and EOR.

Abstract:The creation of non-noble metal magnetically-separable heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of biomass to value-added products has received substantial attention. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of magnetically-separable cobalt catalyst embedded in hierarchically porous N-doped carbon nanospheres (Co@NC) by in situ non-noble metal nitrate-promoted pyrolysis reduction strategy using nitrogen/oxygen co-doped resin polymer spheres as precursors. The facile H2O2 post-treatment process increased surface oxygen-containing groups and improved hydrophilicity to disperse catalysts in aqueous solutions. Moreover, owing to the non-noble metal nanoparticles coated with a graphitic nitrogen-doped carbon layer, the as-prepared Co@NCH2O2 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability of vanillin hydrodeoxygenation in aqueous solutions. This strategy can be extended to other non-noble metal nitrates like M@NCH2O2 (M = Co, Ni) within good recyclability, magnetically-separable ability, and general applicability for a broad substrate scope, further highlighting the superiority of our active catalysts.

Abstract:N-Doped carbon nanotube-encapsulated metal nanoparticles are of great interest in heterogeneous catalysis owing to their improved mass transfer ability and superior stability. Herein, a facile one-pot pyrolysis approach using melamine as the carbon and nitrogen source was developed to fabricate metal nanoparticles embedded in bamboo-like N-doped carbon nanotubes (named as Co@NCNTs-600-800 and Ni@NCNTs-600-800). The optimized Co@NCNTs-600-800 catalyst exhibited outstanding activity in furfural (FAL) selective hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) or cyclopentanone (CPO) in aqueous media. High yields of FOL (100%) and CPO (75.3%) were achieved at 80 degrees C and 140 degrees C, respectively. Besides, this cobalt catalyst showed very good stability and recyclability during the reaction. The synergistic effect between metallic cobalt and N-doped carbon nanotubes was systematically investigated. In addition, the as-prepared Ni@NCNTs-600-800 catalyst also exhibited remarkable activity. Under optimal conditions (100 degrees C and 4 MPa H-2 pressure), a maximum tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFOL) yield (99.5%) was obtained in the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of FAL. The research thus highlights new perspectives for non-noble metal-based N-doped carbon nanotube catalysts for biomass transformation.
Collagen-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as a sustainable catalyst for spirooxindole synthesis

Abstract:In this work, a novel magnetic organic-inorganic hybrid catalyst was fabricated by encapsulating magnetite@silica (Fe3O4@SiO2) nanoparticles with Isinglass protein collagen (IGPC) using epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a crosslinking agent. Characterization studies of the prepared particles were accomplished by various analytical techniques specifically, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The XRD results showed a crystalline and amorphous phase which contribute to magnetite and isinglass respectively. Moreover, the formation of the core/shell structure had been confirmed by TEM images. The synthesized Fe3O4@SiO2/ECH/IG was applied as a bifunctional heterogeneous catalyst in the synthesis of spirooxindole derivatives through the multicomponent reaction of isatin, malononitrile, and C-H acids which demonstrated its excellent catalytic properties. The advantages of this green approach were low catalyst loading, short reaction time, stability, and recyclability for at least four runs.

Abstract:Biochar-based catalysts have shown great promise for application in AOPs due to their wide source and good performance, while its development is limited by its complicated preparation process and large variation in performance. Herein, a series of magnetic biochar composites(Fe@NC-XX) based on different biomass (duckweed, shrimp shell, peanut shell, corncob, and pomelo peel) were fabricated via one-pot pyrolysis method. The removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ) by all materials reached more than 90% within 20min. The characterization results indicated that the special structure of Fe encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was the main reason why this approach is not limited to specific biomass. Acts as a catalytic center, Fe catalyzes the formation of CNTs during annealing. Meanwhile, graphene sheets and carbon nanoparticles formed by melamine and biomass decomposition migrate to the nucleus surface to form a hollow structure of CNTs. In addition, the results of quenching experiments and ESR tests elucidated that surface-bound radicals accumulated on the surface of CNTs, which can remarkably boost the efficient removal of SDZ. Consequently, the synthetic strategy of Fe nanoparticles anchored in N-doped CNTs that are not selective for biomass provides a new pathway for a universal synthesis method of biochar-based catalysts.

Abstract:Catalysts for chemoselective hydrogenation are of vital importance for the synthesis of various important chemicals and intermediates. Herein we developed a simple method for preparing a highly efficient Ni-MoC x nanocomposite catalyst via temperature-programmed carburization of a polyoxometalate precursor. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses indicate that the resulting mesoporous nanocomposite catalyst is made up of well-dispersed metallic nickel particles embedded in a MoC x matrix. This catalyst exhibits high activity and selectivity (> 99%) in the hydrogenation of various substituted nitroaromatics to corresponding anilines. The high efficiency is attributed to the intimate contact of the constituents favoring electron transfer and hydrogen adsorption. Dihydrogen is physisorbed on the carbide support and dissociates on the nickel particles, as evidenced by Mo K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra, density functional theory (DFT), and hydrogen—deuterium exchange. The remarkable catalytic performance of the catalyst could be traced back to the synergistic interaction between the Ni particles and the carbide support. In-situ infrared spectroscopy and DFT simulations indicated that the adsorption/activation of the nitro group is favored compared to that of other substituents at the aromatic ring. In recyclability tests, the Ni-MoC x nanocomposite showed no significant loss of catalytic performance in seven consecutive runs, indicating its robust nature.

Abstract:While metal–organic frameworks (MOF) alone offer a wide range of structural tunability, the formation of composites, through the introduction of other non-native species, like polymers, can further broaden their structure/property spectrum. Here we demonstrate that a polymer, placed inside the MOF pores, can support the collapsible MOF and help inhibit the aggregation of nickel during pyrolysis; this leads to the formation of single atom nickel species in the resulting nitrogen doped carbons, and dramatically improves the activity, CO selectivity and stability in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. Considering the vast number of multifarious MOFs and polymers to choose from, we believe this strategy can open up more possibilities in the field of catalyst design, and further contribute to the already expansive set of MOF applications.

Abstract:Abstract Catalysts are essential materials in biotechnology, medicine, industry, and chemistry. On the other hand, recycling and using waste materials is important in economic efficiency and green chemistry. Thus, biochar was prepared from the stem and roots of the Spear Thistle to recover waste. After magnetizing the biochar, its surface was modified with polyvinyl imidazole. Finally, this modified biochar was decorated with Pd nanoparticles and used as a selective and recyclable nanocatalyst in the hydrogenation of nitroarenes and the Sonogashira reaction. The structure of this organic–inorganic nanocatalyst has been characterized by FESEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR, TEM, and VSM techniques. In the hydrogenation reaction with the amount of 30 mg of nanocatalyst, the temperature of 50 °C in the water solvent, the reaction efficiency reached 99% for 30 min. In addition, under optimal conditions for the Sonogashira reaction: 1.0 mmol iodobenzene, 1.2 mmol phenylacetylene, 20 mg MBC-PVIm/Pd, 2 mmol K 2 CO 3 in H 2 O at 50 C for 15 min, the reaction efficiency reached 95%. The recyclability of magnetic nanocatalysts was investigated and recognized this nanocatalyst can be used several times without notable loss of its activity.
Encapsulated Ni-Co Alloy Nanoparticles As Efficient Catalyst for Hydrodeoxygenation of Biomass Derivatives in Water

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the most promising strategies to transform oxy-gen-rich biomass derivatives into high value-added chemicals and fuels, but highly challenging due to the lack of highly efficient nonprecious metal catalysts. Herein, we report for the first time of a facile synthetic approach to controllably fabricate well-defined Ni-Co alloy NPs confined on the tip of N-CNTs as HDO catalyst. The resultant Ni-Co alloy catalyst possesses outstanding HDO perfor-mance towards biomass-derived vanillin into 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol in water with 100％con-version efficiency and selectivity under mild reaction conditions, surpassing the reported high per-formance nonprecious HDO catalysts. Impressively, our experimental results also unveil that the Ni-Co alloy catalyst can be generically applied to catalyze HDO of vanillin derivatives and other aromatic aldehydes in water with 100％conversion efficiency and over 90％selectivity. Important-ly, our DFT calculations and experimental results confirm that the achieved outstanding HDO cata-lytic performance is due to the greatly promoted selective adsorption and activation of C=O, and desorption of the activated hydrogen species by the synergism of the alloyed Ni-Co NPs. The find-ings of this work affords a new strategy to design and develop efficient transition metal-based cata-lysts for HDO reactions in water.
Sacrificial carbon strategy for facile fabrication of highly-dispersed cobalt-silicon nanocomposites: Insight into its performance on the CO and CH4 oxidation

Abstract:The preparation of highly loaded and dispersed nanoparticle-supported catalysts is challenging and practical in industry. Here we provide a simple yet efficient strategy for the preparation of supported metal (oxide) nanoparticles. Carbonaceous layers, derived from 2-methylimidazoles ligands, were utilized as sacrificial architecture. This strategy effectively reduced the mobility and sintering of nanoparticles during the post-oxidative calcination process. The resulting material has a high loading (30 wt % theoretical contents of cobalt oxides) and small nanoparticles (∼5 nm), even that was thermally annealed at high temperature (e.g. 500 and 700 °C). In contrast to the catalyst prepared by the traditional impregnation and calcination method, the synthesized catalyst exhibits superior performance at both low (carbon monoxide oxidation) and high (methane combustion) temperatures. The excellent catalytic performance should be attributed to the strong size-dependent effect and interaction between cobalt oxides and supports. This preparation strategy paves a new way for highly loaded and dispersed supported heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have recently emerged as an ideal type of carbon precursors with abundant tailorability. In this work, a series of ZIF‐derived porous carbon catalysts have been prepared with encapsulation of bimetallic oxide nanoparticles via simple thermal treatment. The composition and structure of these catalysts were confirmed in detail by different characterization methods. The bimetallic oxide (Mn/Co, Fe/Co, and Cu/Co) nanoparticles were encapsulated in the nitrogen‐doped graphitized carbon matrix. Moreover, the hierarchically porous structure and carbon defects were successfully constructed in the carbon catalysts. Additionally, in the selective oxidation of saturated C–H bonds in alkyl arenes, the carbon catalysts demonstrate outstanding performance for the oxidation of C–H bonds to corresponding carboxyl groups. This was due to their unique structure can greatly promote mass transfer and molecular oxygen activation, resulting in high conversion and high selectivity. Remarkably, this work here could also provide a novel strategy to the controllable synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)‐derived carbon catalysts for enhanced performance in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Porous coordination polymers, alternatively identified as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanoparticles, are becoming more and more important in the field of nanomaterials science, especially in catalysis. The intricate structures of MOFs enable the integration of metal nodes, encapsulating substrates, and functional linkers, facilitating synergistic engineering. This study underscores the importance of Ni-MOFs in synthetic chemistry, particularly their role in organic compound synthesis. It investigates their utility in oxidation, hydrogenation, coupling reactions, C–H activation, and N-heterocyclic compound generation. Ni-MOFs, functioning as well-defined heterogeneous catalysts are pivotal in addressing societal challenges across synthesis, energy, and environmental domains. Despite notable achievements, there remains a significant need for further advancements to deepen our understanding of these processes beyond initial demonstrations, especially concerning the synthesis of bioactive compounds. This focused examination of Ni-MOFs is anticipated to offer valuable insights for future research endeavors exploring MOF catalytic applications.

In‐situ Construction of Graphite‐Supported Magnetic Carbocatalysts from a Metallo‐Supramolecular Polymer: High Performance for Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation

Abstract:Developing efficient, sustainable, and stable nanocatalysts continue being the struggling goal both for academia and for industrial. Carbocatalysts have attracted great attention due to high mass transfer ability, environmental sustainability and stability. Fabricating well-defined carbonaceous nanocatalysts for heterogeneous catalysis is intensively pursuing. In this work, a newly developed economic and facile method was applied for the large-scale fabrication of graphite sheet encapsulated magnetic carbocatalysts. The carbocatalysts was constructed via in-situ pyrolysis of melamine-metallo-supramolecular polymer precursors (MMSP) under vacuum condition. The framework of MMSP was synthesized through the condensation reaction. As a proof-of-concept, this method was successfully applied for the fabrication of three kinds of graphite encapsulated magnetic carbocatalysts. Based on systematically optimization, the Pt-NiO-1000@NC-650 nanocatalyst demonstrated highly efficient and remarkable stability for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol to produce corresponding 4-aminophenol. The kinetics study of this catalytic system illustrates the reaction order is 1st for Pt-NiO-1000@NC-650. Furthermore, the kinetic constant (K-app) is 1.57 min(-1) and the turnover frequency (TOF) is up to 4, 268 h(-1).
