Abstract:To study the effects of multiple physical and chemical parameters on the formation kinetics and morphological characteristics of fracture-filling natural gas hydrate is of great significance for large-scale development and disaster prevention of natural gas hydrate in the South China Sea (SCS). In this study, the effects of the disturbance rate, chemical promoter concentration, silty sediment concentration, and pressure on the induction time, formation kinetics, and growth morphology of fracture-filling natural gas hydrate were studied by conducting formation kinetic experiments and morphological observation using the visualization platform of hydrate in situ formation. The results show that hydrate clusters formed within fractures are stratified into three distinct layers: a dense and hard layer near the gas-liquid interface, a shaggy layer in the upper region of the gas-liquid interface, and a loose layer formed by the agglomeration of hydrate fragments in the lower region. Elevated disturbance rates significantly reduce induction and growth times, enhancing overall hydrate formation, for example, when the disturbance rate was increased from 15 to 50 rpm, the induction time decreased by 69.87% and the yield increased by 148.34%. Optimal sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) concentrations (400 ppm) foster the development of a porous, loosely aggregated hydrate structure, improving gas-liquid contact and accelerating growth rates. However, SDS does not alter the fundamental hydrate structure or increase the total yield. The presence of silty sediments significantly boosts hydrate formation rates and yields, with the optimal concentration of 0.5 wt % leading to a remarkable 200% reduction in induction time. Elevated pressures initially reduce induction times and subsequently promote denser hydrate formation, enhancing both growth rates and the total yield. This study is supposed to provide critical insights into the formation kinetics and morphological characteristics of fracture-filling natural gas hydrate.

Abstract:Gas hydrates hold great potential in the field of energy storage & transportation. However, the stochastic induction time and low formation rate restricted the large-scale industrialization of gas hydrate technology, which need to be improved through effective methods. Superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs) are lightly cross-linked polymers with three-dimensional networks that can absorb and retain a large amount of water or aqueous solution. Due to the strong absorption and retention capabilities, SAHs have been added in the system to facilitate gas hydrate formation via increasing mass transfer and improving promoter recyclability. However, the interactions among gas, water and hydrogels are complicated, and the usages are diverse, and the promotion mechanisms were underexplored. This paper reviews the existing cases applying SAHs in gas hydrate formation, and analyzes the influencing mechanisms of SAHs; and meanwhile proposes a concept of SAH-based solid-state water (SSW) system, and evaluates its application potential in promoting gas hydrate formation, and further prospects its modification and integration possibilities for being a hydrate promoter.

Abstract:<p>Hydrate technology is of considerable significance for industrial natural gas storage and transportation. In this paper, the hydrate formation in surfactants with different ratios of alkyl glycosides (APG) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was studied at 275.15 K and 7 MPa. The results show that when the APG content was 20%, the gas storage density reached 293.59 mol/mol indicating the best hydrate formation performance, and it can be further improved to 294.30 mol/mol after adding alumina. There was a secondary induction stage in hydrate formation when compounding. SDS accelerated gas by affecting the surface tension, and APG micelles could promote hydrate aggregation. The promotion effects of SDS and APG were superimposed. The hydrate was distributed in the hollow cylinder of the container. The larger the proportion of SDS, the closer the distance between the hydrate and the bottom.</p>

Abstract:Hydrate-based technologies possess great application potential in the industrial field, including gas storage, transportation, capture, and separation. However, the slow kinetics of hydrate formation hinders its commercial utility. The widespread use of porous media and surfactants in promoting the kinetics of hydrate formation has been accompanied by an increasing interest in understanding how they affect hydrate formation. In this paper, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used to compound with three kinds of porous media (glass beads, inert alumina, and activated alumina), with average particle sizes of 1, 3, and 5 mm, to investigate the influence of particle sizes and kinds of porous media on hydrate formation. The results showed that the smaller the particle size of porous media, the more obvious the promotion effect is. Among the three complex systems, there is a significant induction period in the activated alumina system, and the average induction time is about 6 times that of the other systems. However, the formation rate and gas storage capacity of the hydrate are the highest in the activated alumina system. Abundant surface micropores and unique surface charge distribution are very important. Finally, different solution distributions in the reactor resulted in different hydrate distributions, and the nucleation location was vital for hydrate formation and occurrence. Hydrate shells were found to grow on the surface of activated alumina particles, which was not reported in previous studies. This study provides a new view for the study of hydrate morphologies in the complex system of porous media and surfactants.

Abstract:<p>The presence of surfactant could accelerate the hydrate formation dramatically, which is of great significance for the industrial application of the hydrate-based technologies. In this study, the micro-morphologies of the hydrate particles and the process of hydrate formed along the reactor wall was investigated using a high-speed camera. How the hydrate formed on the wall and the way the liquid phase migrated upward for the hydrate formation were intuitively exhibited, mechanisms for the adherent growth process and the different growth patterns were also proposed. It could be found that the hydrate particles formed in the Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS) solution was needle-shaped, and five aggregation forms were observed. The presence of SDS could make the critical size smaller and thus a lower energy barrier, both of which are facilitate to the hydrate nucleation and the further massive hydrate formation. When hydrate started to form on the wall, hydrate particles were accumulated and consolidated at the liquid–gas interface firstly, then stuck on the wall. Liquid phase could migrate upward through the porous hydrate under the capillary force for the further hydrate formation. In addition, the liquid film at the growth frontier and the condensate distributed on the wall were conducive to the moving of the growth frontier and the final hydrate formation. This work provides insights on the hydrate formation characteristics in SDS solution which facilitates to the rapid formation of hydrate and thereby promotes the industrial applications of the hydrate-based technologies.</p>

Abstract:Gas hydrates have gained great interest in the energy and environmental field as a medium for gas storage and transport, gas separation, and carbon dioxide sequestration. The presence of small doses of surfactants in the aqueous phase has been reported to enhance hydrate formation; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Thus, in situ high-resolution X-ray computed tomography measurements were performed to monitor the upward water migration and the resulting hydrate nucleation and growth. It was found that the presence of hydrate crystals at the gas–liquid–solid contact line triggered the enhanced growth of hydrates on the reactor wall. A time delay was observed between the disappearance of the bulk water reservoir and its transformation into hydrate. The lower interfacial tension between the hydrate surface and the solution facilitated its adsorption onto the reactor wall once a thin film of hydrate nucleated on the solid wall surface. These hydrate layers present on the reactor wall were found to be porous, wherein the porosity decreased with increased subcooling. These fundamental results will be of value in understanding the mechanism of hydrate growth in the presence of surfactants and its potential application in hydrate-based technologies.

Abstract:Gas hydrates have been proposed as a potential technology for a number of applications, such as separation of gas mixtures, CO2 capture, transportation, and sequestration, methane storage and transport, and seawater desalination. Most of these applications will benefit from reduced induction time of hydrate nucleation, enhanced hydrate growth rate, and maximum water-to-hydrate conversion. The addition of surfactants to the gas–water system serves this purpose in a very effective manner. This review focuses on different surfactants that were utilized for gas hydrate formation studies; insights have been provided on the possible mechanisms of action through which these surfactants affect hydrate formation kinetics. A thorough analysis of the existing literature on surfactants suggests that enhanced rate of hydrate nucleation and growth kinetics may not be directly linked to micelle formation. Conversely, reduced surface tension in the presence of surfactants not only enhances the mass transfer but also changes the morphology of hydrate formation, which in turn enhances gas–water interactions for faster hydrate growth rate.

Abstract:Given the recycling, environmental friendliness and other advantages, hydrate-based gas separation (HBGS) technology has recently gained considerable attention. This work examined synthesized ternary gas mixture (CH4/CO2/N2) hydrate formation kinetics with both cyclopentane (CP) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as additives under 7.0 MPa at different temperatures (275.1, 280.1, 295.1 and 290.1 K). Two volume ratios of CP and SDS aqueous solution were used. Hydrate samples were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopy, and cryo-scanning electron microscopy (Cryo-SEM) to reveal the microscopic influence mechanism of additives on hydrates. It was found that the use of mixed additives clearly promotes the hydrate formation kinetics, while enhancing gas separation under some special conditions. Ternary mixed gas with CP and SDS can form a hydrate, in which structure I and II coexisted. CO2 molecules can be encaged in both small and large cages in hydrate. However, CH4 molecules occupied only the small cage of structure I hydrate except with 0.01% SDS with volume ratio of CP and solution at 0.308 and 0.03% SDS with the volume ratio of CP and solution at 0.154. The increasing SDS concentration can smoothen the hydrate crystal surface, thereby inducing more complete crystallization.

Molecular Mechanisms For Cyclodextrin-Promoted Methane Hydrate Formation In Water

Abstract:Cyclodextrins were used as environmentally friendly additives to overcome the slow kinetics of hydrate formation that limited the industrial application of gas hydrate technology. Microsecond molecular dynamics simulations were performed to identify the degree and the underlying mechanisms of the cyclodextrin effects on the methane hydrate formation rate by the four-body order parameter and molecular configurations and to clarify the hydrate structure in the presence of cyclodextrin by face-saturated incomplete cage analysis. Overall results indicated that the addition of beta-cyclodextrin in water facilitated"the hydrate growth rate, promoted the formation of thermodynamically stable hydrate structure, and enhanced the methane storage capacity. It highlighted the role of cyclodextrin to facilitate the formation of water channel bridging hydrate and water (at low ratio of gas to water) and to increase thezas water interfacial curvature (at high ratio of gas to water) on the accelerated kinetics of hydrate growth. The advantages of the cyclodextrin-promoted gas hydrate approach for gas storage were also highlighted by comparing it with the gas hydrate formation using other additives and the gas cyclodextrin complexation method.
Investigation on Growth Kinetics of Hydrate on the Surface of an AC-QS Porous Media Composite System in an SDS System

Abstract:The anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) used in industry is a kinetic accelerator that helps to form hydrates, but the hydrates formed are extremely unstable and cannot be well preserved and transported. Hydrates stored in porous media environments can serve as a means of transportation. In this work, SDS is combined with two porous media (quartz sand (QS) and activated carbon (AC) of different particle sizes) to form a composite system to study the effect of particle size on hydrate formation characteristics. Experimental results show that when a small particle size quartz sand layer is added to a 100% saturated sodium dodecyl sulfate solution, the hydrate gas storage capacity is 0.320 mol, while the surfactant solution without a porous medium layer is only 0.263 mol. Under the same particle size, the maximum water intake amounts of the QS layer and AC layer are 0.192 and 0.143 mol, respectively. The small size of activated carbon as a gas reservoir is not conducive to the formation and storage of hydrates. The AC layer gap composed of activated carbon with a particle size of 100 μm does not hinder the mass transfer of methane gas but only hinders the formation and storage of hydrates. The good adsorption capacity of the activated carbon layer can be used as a capture layer to capture the upward migration of unreacted liquid, which is beneficial to the storage of hydrates. In the AC-QS composite system, the AC layer is used to transfer the effect of SDS to drive hydrate growth along the wall to the upper layer. The gas storage capacity of the AC-QS composite system of different sizes is basically higher than the 172 mol/(mol of the separate QS system). And the average reaction rate is 2.65 mol/min. At the same time, under the QS-AC system, 100 mesh AC can increase the gas storage capacity by up to 21.6%. At the same time, experiments found that compared with the large-particle QS system as a hydrate generation layer, the small-particle QS system and the AC system with different particle sizes can better improve the hydrate gas storage capacity. This function of capturing migrating liquid through the AC layer can solve the problem of insufficient gas storage capacity caused by exposure of a large amount of hydrates to the gas phase environment.

Abstract:Hydrate has been considered as a promising and cost-effective route for massive storage of natural gas. However, the main problem for this technique to be commercially available is its poor chemical kinetics. In the present study, aiming to reveal the underlying mechanism dominating the hydrate formation kinetics, we investigated combined effects of surface tension and thermal conductivity on the methane hydrate formation. The induction time, gas uptake, and storage capacity for hydrate formation was investigated in detail in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles and SDS surfactant. The optimal condition for methane hydrate growth was found to be 500 ppm SDS in the presence of 1.0 wt% TiO2 nanoparticles. In this case, the induction time significantly reduced from 183 to 14 min compared to that in pure water. With the addition of SDS alone the surface tension decreased from 72.4 mN/m for pure water to 38.4 mN/m which further decreased to 33.8mN/m, when 1.0% TiO2 was added into the SDS solution. On the other hand, the thermal conductivity of solution showed a continuous increase with the increasing addition of TiO2 while there was an optimal thermal conductivity value for the hydrate growth. It turns out that the optimal addition of TiO2 in SDS solution can result in the lowest surface tension and suitable thermal conductivity, which, in turn, leads to the favorable environment for methane hydrate growth. Our results are supposed to be valuable for the precise control of methane hydrate growth kinetics.

Abstract:Hydrate technology has a bright future in the development of high quality production and life for human being. However, the slow hydrate formation rate and low gas consumption are the biggest two obstacles to the commercial application of the technology. In this study, the macro experimental investigation, simulation calculation and microscopic analysis are combined to study the process of the hydrate formation and the effects of gas molecules at different cooling ways on the hydrate nucleation process from the perspective of the transformation of free-water to bound-water. Macroscopically, the difference of gas–liquid temperature makes the heat transfer process between gas and liquid at the interface more active, which is more conducive to the diffusion of gas to liquid; and microscopically, the transformation of free-water to bound-water and the distance between oxygen atoms dOO of adjacent water molecules in the hydrate nucleation are the two key factors affecting the rate of hydrate formation and gas consumption. The results of this study not only propose a more efficient hydrate formation way, but also provide direction for solving the key bottleneck of hydrate technology so that it possible for the hydrate technology from laboratory research to industrial application.

Abstract:Adding low dosage hydrate inhibitors to the hydrate systems makes the generated hydrate particles more uniformly dispersed in the liquid phase, which can significantly reduce the hydrate accumulation and blockage in oil and gas pipelines. The effect of surfactant hydrophile-lipophilic balance (HLB) values on hydrate flow characteristics was studied with a flow loop. The experimental results showed that there was a critical HLB value. When the HLB value was 4.3-9.2, it had an inhibitory effect on the hydrate induction time, and when the HLB value was greater than 10.2, it had a promoting effect. The hydrate volume fraction increased gradually with the increase in the HLB value, while the slurry apparent viscosity decreased with the increase in the HLB value. It was also found that different types of surfactants all showed the effects of anti-agglomerant and dispersion, which can obviously improve the flow of the hydrate slurry. Finally, the analyzed results showed that the hydrate slurry exhibited shear-thinning behaviors that can be identified as a pseudoplastic fluid based on the Herschel-Bulkley rheological model, and the functional relationship between the rheological index and the solid phase hydrate volume fraction was obtained using the fitting method. This study can provide a reference for the preparation of high-efficiency hydrate anti-agglomerants.

Abstract:Surfactants are considered the most influential promoters for accelerating the formation of gas hydrates in gas storage applications. However, their promotion mechanism remains unclear, and the formation of foam during the hydrate dissociation step severely limits hydrate-based gas storage technology. Oleic acid was used as a renewable biomass source in this study to develop a novel biosurfactant capable of enhancing methane hydrate formation. Oleic acid-based promoter (OAP) significantly improved kinetics of methane hydrate formation, and enhanced growth of hydrate crystals. A maximum conversion of 81 % and storage capacity of ∼151 v/v were achieved in a solution containing 1000 ppm OAP at 9 MPa. Additionally, OAP showed good promotion activity at a lower driving force (7 MPa), resulting in conversion and storage capacity 4.2 times greater than pure water. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the primary mechanism action of OAP is to increase the solubility of methane in an aqueous solution by forming promoter micelles. A gas release simulation for sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution generated significant foam, whereas no foam formed when OAP was present. The obtained findings are useful for developing efficient biosurfactants based on vegetable oils and can shed light on the promotion mechanism of promoters.

Abstract:CO2 hydrate formation and dissociation are the fundamental processes for investigating hydrate-based carbon storage. To better understand CO2 hydrate phase behaviors in the presence of surfactant and solid additives, this study reports the effects of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) and micron Cu particles on the formation of CO2 hydrates in the presence of porous quartz sands in a lab-scale reactor. This research is part of a wider study focused on defining the properties of solid additives, produced via gas-atomization, on the formation and dissociation of gas hydrates. The morphology of CO2 hydrate formed in SDS solution shows dispersed crystal particles due to the increase of surface tension. SDS works as the kinetic promoter on CO2 hydrates formation whereas the addition of Cu particles inhibits CO2 gas consumption. The mixture additives show a faint kinetic inhibit effect, in which the Brownian motion restrictions may be responsible for the inhibition of CO2 hydrate production. The solid additives also showed a weak thermodynamic effect on CO2 hydrate phase equilibrium.

Abstract:The influences of additives(including surfactants,nanoparticles,etc.),gas components and external field on the natural gas hydrate formation were summarized. The surfactants can promote the hydrate formation,but the surfactants with low concentration have no effect on the thermodynamic behavior in the hydrate formation. The nanoparticles can also promote the hydrate formation by speeding the growth of the hydrate crystal structure. The gas components,namely C3H8,H2S etc. besides N2 can promote the hydrate formation obviously. The magnetic field can increase the hydration rate and extend the hydrate growth area,which is beneficial to the hydrate formation. Researches for the effects of electric field,ultrasound and microwave on the hydrate formation have been little.

Abstract:Gas hydrate is a nonstoichiometric crystalline material. It is attracting more and more attention not only because natural gas hydrate is a potential energy resource, but also because hydrate-based technologies can be potentially applied to the industry of energy and environment such as energy storage, carbon sequestration, etc. The nucleation mechanism of gas hydrate is a key issue in studying reservoir formation of natural gas hydrate and the kinetic properties of gas hydrate as an energy-storage media. Molecular dynamics simulation can provide microscopic insights into molecular-scale understanding of hydrate nucleation. In this review, the advances on the study of heterogeneous hydrate nucleation by molecular dynamics simulation are summarized, with a specific focus on the factors affecting nucleation processes. The interfacial energy barrier for nucleation will be lowered by molecular structure of interfacial water between hydrate and solid substrate. The interface and surface properties of solid substrate, including hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, surface roughness, layer-accumulated adsorption potential, crystallinity and surface layer-charge are also recognized as being associated with the process of hydrate nucleation by influencing the dynamics of gas and water molecules. In case of hydrate nucleation in confined pore space, confinement effect, pore size and elasticity are identified as the controlling factors.
Effect of nanofluid and SDS compound system on natural gas hydrate formation

Abstract:As a compound multi-phase dispersion system, nanofluids can enhance the energy transfer performance of solutions and are considered to be effective in promoting the formation of hydrates. Hence, in this study, a compound system of SiO2 nanofluid and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution at 6 MPa and 275.15 K was used to study the effects of Cu and SiO2 nanofluids on CH4 hydrate formation at different concentrations, and the results were compared. The results showed that the Cu nanofluids promoted the formation of natural gas hydrates. At lower Cu nanofluid concentrations, the gas storage capacity of the hydrates increased with increasing Cu nanofluid concentration. At a concentration of 2200 ppm, the gas storage capacity reached 111.57 Vg/Vw. However, the SiO2 nanofluid only promoted the formation of hydrates at lower concentrations. The gas storage capacity reached 108.26 Vg/Vw at a concentration of 800 ppm. As the concentration of the SiO2 nanofluid increased, the gas storage capacity of the hydrates gradually decreased, and hydrate formation was eventually inhibited. Therefore, reasonable selection of the type and concentration of nanofluids is required to improve the gas storage capacity of hydrates.

Investigation of natural gas storage and transportation by gas hydrate formation in the presence of bio-surfactant sulfonated lignin

Abstract:The hydrate-based solidified natural gas (SNG) technology is a promising approach for natural gas storage and transportation. One challenge of this technology is to enhance the hydrate formation kinetics and achieve mild storage conditions. This work employed a biomass surfactant sulfonated lignin (SL) to enhance CH4 hydrate formation. Meanwhile, the self-preservation effect of CH4 hydrate formed in the presence of SL was investigated using a high-pressure micro-differential scanning calorimeter (HP μ-DSC). The results indicate that 500 ppm SL is an optimum concentration for improving CH4 hydrate formation kinetics among the five SL concentrations (300, 500, 700, 900, and 1000 ppm) tested. At 500 ppm SL, the CH4 hydrate formation rate was increased significantly, and the largest gas consumption was obtained, which was 2.7 times larger than that obtained in pure water under the same temperature and pressure conditions. The gas consumption was also larger than that obtained in the presence of other surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate, silicone surfactant, and ethylene diamine tetraacetamide). CH4 hydrate formed in the presence of SL can be stably preserved at 0.1 MPa and 268.15 K due to the self-preservation effect. Therefore, the energy costs, such as system cooling and gas compression, for SNG using SL are lower than conventional natural gas storage and transport technologies.
