Abstract:
The high‐damping property of polyurethane elastomers and the low density of the hollow glass microspheres (HGM) were used to prepare the sound insulation materials in the present work. The transmission loss (TL) was measured to evaluate the HGM content on the sound insulation properties. The experimental results showed that the addition of HGM improved the hardness and compression modulus of the HGM‐filled polyurethane composites, and the loss factor (tan δ) of polyurethane composites were greater than 0.9. The average transmission loss (ATL, from 63 to 6300 Hz) reached 37.32 dB when the content of HGM was 10 wt%. The ATL of the HGM‐filled polyurethane composites with 15 wt% HGM in the damping control region and the mass control region were 31.94 and 46.78 dB, respectively. The synergistic effect of the microphase separation, the interfacial effect and the rigidity of polyurethane composites resulted in the improvement on sound insulation property. The polyurethane composite has a great potential application for the field of sound insulation materials.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve The paper aims to address the issues of high density and heavy weight associated with traditional soundproofing materials such as steel plates, lead plates, and brick walls. Specifically, the research focuses on preparing soundproofing materials with high damping characteristics by filling hollow glass microspheres (HGM) into polyurethane elastomers. Experimental results show that adding HGM can improve the hardness and compressive modulus of polyurethane composites and significantly enhance their soundproofing performance. When the HGM content is 10wt%, the average transmission loss (ATL) reaches 37.32dB. ### Main Findings of the Research 1. **Soundproofing Performance**: The soundproofing performance of HGM-filled polyurethane composites is significantly improved at different frequencies. The ATL of polyurethane composites filled with 10wt% HGM reaches up to 37.32dB in the range of 63 to 6300Hz. 2. **Mechanical Properties**: Adding HGM improves the hardness and compressive modulus of polyurethane composites. The hardness and compressive modulus of polyurethane composites filled with 10wt% HGM reach 55.80 and 4.21MPa, respectively. 3. **Damping Characteristics**: HGM-filled polyurethane composites exhibit a high damping factor (tan δ), which helps to further enhance their soundproofing performance. 4. **Microphase Separation Effect**: The interfacial effect between HGM and the polyurethane matrix, along with the rigidity of the polyurethane composites, collectively enhances the soundproofing performance. ### Conclusion HGM-filled polyurethane composites, as high-damping soundproofing materials, have broad application potential in industrial equipment, transportation, and construction activities.
