Abstract:Emotion regulation refers to the processes by which we influence which emotions we have,when we have them,and how we experience and express them.It may occur consciously or unconsciously,voluntarily or automatically.It also includes the processes to maintain,decrease,or increase negative and positive emotions.The ability to adopt appropriate strategies to regulate his or her emotions can be much helpful to individuals' mental health.Previous researches mainly focused on specific emotional regulation strategies and their related influences,as well as their affecting factors.In recent years,researches on brain mechanisms of emotion regulation have made much progress,along with the multiple utilization of brain imaging.A new theoretical model of neural mechanisms of emotion regulation has been proposed,bringing an alternative perspective of emotion regulation.The research focus has been extended from conscious emotion regulation to unconscious or automatic emotion regulation.The range of emotions in this field is expanded and more attention is focused on specific emotions,changing from negative and positive emotions to sadness,anxiety and so on.Emotional regulation strategies become much more clear and various,and the research focus is no longer limited to neural correlates of reappraisal and suppression,more attention is being paid to neural networks of distraction or self-distraction.Furthermore,the target research groups are extended to clients of affective disorders,and the relationship between abnormalities in neural mechanisms of emotion regulation and the occurrence of affective disorders is becoming an important issue in this field.In addition,concerns about individual differences in brain mechanisms and their implications for clinical diagnosis and therapy are also arising.In order to promote the research in this field, the present article makes a full introduction of research results on brain mechanisms of emotion regulation,and future research directions are also proposed as follows:Firstly,future studies may further explore the neural correlates of other distinctive emotional strategies, such as distraction,which can promote the better understanding of the nature of emotion regulation;Secondly,future studies should examine the neural activations of emotion regulation of different emotions under different regulatory goals,such as maintenance,increase, and decrease,for the fact that the site and extent of neural activation during emotion regulation were found to be related to the regulatory goals.Thirdly,researches on neural correlates of automatic emotion should be enhanced for the purpose of extending its research field and application.Finally,since the relations between individual differences in neural mechanisms and mental health will still be an important issue in future studies,much more attention should be paid to this division of research interests,for the perspective that advancements in this division will not only deepen the understanding of origins of some affective disorders,but also facilitate the clinical diagnosis and treatments of affective disorders,and thus can broaden the application of research on neural mechanisms of emotion regulation.
