Energy and Buildings
Abstract:This paper presents a mathematical model for use in the first stage of the energy utilization analysis of buildings, viz. calculation of thermal performance. The building is idealized as a multi-input, multi-output linear system. The inputs or driving forces are mainly climatic in nature. The outputs are room temperatures and/or room loads.A frequency response approach is firstly developed in which the system inputs and outputs are viewed as being sinusoidal in time. The system may thus be characterized by a (generally large) number of frequency response functions relating each input to each output. Such an approach can accommodate multizone buildings, heat flows to the building fabric, radiative heat flow between room surfaces, and various other special cases.Next a transient response approach is developed by utilizing causal linear system theory to convert each of the frequency response functions for the system into so-called total zone response factors. This approach includes a determination of sensible room heating or cooling requirements. The model represents a realistic and efficient means of simulating thermal performance of buildings. It unifies and develops a number of works published over the previous 25 years. It has been coded into a computer program for calculation of hour-by-hour thermal performance over periods of any desired length.
