Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.

Abstract:It is the main objective of this paper to show a vanishing result for cuspidal cohomology of arithmetic groups in classical groups~$G$ defined over some number field~$k$.Our approach relies on the fact that cuspidal automorphic forms are nonsingular in the sense of Howe. This result puts a strong constraint on the (archimedean components of) irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of $G$that can possibly contribute to the cuspidal cohomology. Combining this with the classification of Vogan-Zuckerman of unitary representations with nonzero cohomologyprovides a constant $r_0(G/k)$, only depending on $G/k$, below which the cuspidal cohomology vanishes. We will give a formula for this constant for each classical group of type (I) in the classification scheme due to Weil. We conclude with making this result explicit for some split classical groups over a totally real algebraic number field.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{G}$ be the subgroup $\mathfrak{S}_{n-q} \times \mathfrak{S}_{q}$ of the $n$-th symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ for $n-q \geq q$. In this paper, we study the $\mathfrak{G}$-invariant part of the rational cohomology group of the pure braid group $P_{n}$. The invariant part includes the rational cohomology of a spin hyperelliptic mapping class group of genus $g$ as a subalgebra when $n=2g+2$, denoted by $H^*(P_{n})^{\mathfrak{G}}$. Based on the study of Lehrer-Solomon, we prove that they are independent of $n$ and $q$ in degree $*\leq q-1$. We also give a formula to calculate the dimension of $H^*(P_{n})^{\mathfrak{G}}$ and calculate it in all degree for $q\leq 3$.

Vanishing of the second $L^p$-cohomology group for most semisimple groups of rank at least 3

Abstract:We show vanishing of the second $L^p$-cohomology group for most semisimple algebraic groups of rank at least 3 over local fields. More precisely, we show this result for $\SL(4)$, for simple groups of rank $\geq 4$ that are not of exceptional type or of type $D_4$ and for all semisimple, non-simple groups of rank $\geq 3$. Our methods work for large values of $p$ in the real case and for all $p>1$ in the non-Archimedean case. This result points towards a positive answer to Gromov's question on vanishing of $L^p$-cohomology of semisimple groups for all $p>1$ in degrees below the rank. The methods consist in using a spectral sequence à la Bourdon-Rémy, adapting a version of Mautner's phenomenon from Cornulier-Tessera and concluding thanks to a combinatorial case-by-case study of classical simple groups.

Abstract:In this note we describe basic geometric properties of p-harmonic forms and p-coclosed forms and use them to reprove vanishing theorems of Pansu and new injectivity theorems for the Lp -cohomology of simply connected, pinched negatively curved manifolds. We also provide a partial resolution of a conjecture of Gromov on the vanishing of Lp -cohomology on symmetric spaces.

Abstract:On general Carnot groups, the definition of a possible hypoelliptic Hodge-Laplacian on forms using the Rumin complex has been considered by Rumin, who introduced a 0-order pseudodifferential operator on forms. However, for questions regarding regularity for example, where one needs sharp estimates, this 0-order operator is not suitable. Up to now, there have only been very few attempts to define hypoelliptic Hodge-Laplacians on forms that would allow for such sharp estimates. Indeed, this question is rather difficult to address in full generality, the main issue being that the Rumin exterior differential $d_c$ is not homogeneous on arbitrary Carnot groups. In this note, we consider the specific example of the free Carnot group of step 3 with 2 generators, and we introduce three possible definitions of hypoelliptic Hodge-Laplacians. We compare how these three possible Laplacians can be used to obtain sharp div-curl type inequalities akin to those considered by Bourgain & Brezis and Lanzani & Stein for the de Rham complex, or their subelliptic counterparts obtained by Baldi, Franchi & Pansu for the Rumin complex on Heisenberg groups.

Lannes' $T$-functor and mod-$p$ cohomology of profinite groups

Abstract:The Lannes-Quillen theorem relates the mod-$p$ cohomology of a finite group $G$ with the mod-$p$ cohomology of centralizers of abelian elementary $p$-subgroups of $G$, for $p>0$ a prime number. This theorem was extended to profinite groups whose mod-$p$ cohomology algebra is finitely generated by Henn. In a weaker form, the Lannes-Quillen theorem was then extended by Symonds to arbitrary profinite groups. Building on Symonds' result, we formulate and prove a full version of this theorem for all profinite groups. For this purpose, we develop a theory of products for families of discrete torsion modules, parameterized by a profinite space, which is dual, in a very precise sense, to the theory of coproducts for families of profinite modules, parameterized by a profinite space, developed by Haran, Melnikov and Ribes. In the last section, we give applications to the problem of conjugacy separability of $p$-torsion elements and finite $p$-subgroups.

Invariance of non-vanishing of first $l^p$-cohomology under $L^q$-Measured Equivalence

Abstract:The first $l^p$-cohomology is an algebro-analytical object attached to a finitely generated discrete group and introduced by M. Gromov. It is well known that it is invariant under quasi-isometry. In this article, we prove that the non-vanishing of the first $l^p$-cohomology of a non-amenable group is invariant under $L^q$-Measured Equiavalence (an equivalence relation introduced by Gromov), where $q\geq p$. We also discuss many applications of this result. We prove that for hyperbolic (in the sense of Gromov) Coxeter groups with boundaries having Combinatorial Loewner Property, conformal dimension (of the canonical conformal gauge) of the Gromov boundary is invariant under $L^q$-Measured Equivalence for some large $q$. We prove that the finitely generated free groups and surface groups are not $L^1$-Measured Equivalent. We also give a lower bound of the critical exponent for the first $l^p$-cohomology of any lattice in $SO(n,1)$. Finally, we discuss $L^q$-Measured Equivalence between non-amenable 3-manifold groups corresponding to Thurston's three geometries $\mathbb{H}^3$, $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\widetilde{SL_2(\mathbb{R})}$.

Polynomial point counts and odd cohomology vanishing on moduli spaces of stable curves

Abstract:We compute the number of F_q-points on M_{4,n}, for n less than or equal to 3, and show that it is a polynomial in q, using a sieve based on Hasse-Weil zeta functions. As an application, we prove that the rational singular cohomology groups of moduli spaces of stable curves of genus g with n marked points vanish in all odd degrees less than or equal to 9, for all g and n. Both results confirm predictions of the Langlands program, via the conjectural correspondence with polarized algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of conductor 1, which are classified in low weight. Our vanishing result for odd cohomology resolves a problem posed by Arbarello and Cornalba in the 1990s.

Abstract:We initiate the investigation of critical exponents (in degree equal to the rank) for the vanishing of L^p-cohomology of higher rank Lie groups and related manifolds. We deal with the rank 2 case and exhibit such phenomena for SL$_3$(R) and for a family of 5-dimensional solvable Lie groups. This leads us to exhibit a continuum of quasi-isometry classes of rank 2 solvable Lie groups of non-positive curvature. We provide a detailed description of the $L^p$-cohomology of the real and complex hyperbolic spaces, to be combined with a spectral sequence argument for our higher-rank results.

Abstract:We prove that the Serre spectral sequence of the fibration $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0, 1+p} \to E\mathbb Z/p \times_{\mathbb Z/p} \overline{\mathcal M}_{0, 1+p} \to B \mathbb Z/p$ collapses at the $E_2$ page. We use this to prove that: for any element of the $\mathbb Z/p$-equivariant cohomology with $\mathbb F_p$-coefficients of genus zero Deligne-Mumford space with $1+p$ marked points, if this element is torsion then it is non-equivariant. This concludes that the only "interesting" $\mathbb Z/p$-equivariant operations are quantum Steenrod power operations.

Abstract:We prove that given an analytic action of a compact $p$-adic Lie group on a Banach space over a field of positive characteristic, one can detect either the simultaneous vanishing or the simultaneous finite-dimensionality of all of the continuous cohomology groups from the corresponding statement for the restriction to a pro-$p$ procyclic subgroup. We also formulate a conjecture generalizing this result, in which the base field is allowed to have mixed characteristic and the subgroup is allowed to be nilpotent. Finally, we formulate an analogous conjecture about Lie algebra cohomology and relate this to a theorem of Kostant.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable group acting properly on a metric space with contracting elements and $\{H_i:1\le i\le n\}$ be a finite collection of Morse subgroups in $G$. We prove that each $H_i$ has infinite index in $G$ if and only if the relative second bounded cohomology $H^{2}_b(G, \{H_i\}_{i=1}^n; \mathbb{R})$ is infinite-dimensional. In addition, we also prove that for any contracting element $g$, there exists $k>0$ such that $H^{2}_b(G, \langle \langle g^k\rangle \rangle; \mathbb{R})$ is infinite-dimensional. Our results generalize a theorem of Pagliantini-Rolli for finite-rank free groups and produce some new results on the (relative) second bounded cohomology of groups. Under the same conditions, we also prove a Gap Theorem stating that any $C$-contracting element $g$ in $G$ either has a power which is conjugate to its inverse, or else the stable commutator length of $g$ is at least equal to some constant $\tau=\tau(C)>0$. This generalizes the Gap Theorem obtained by Calegari-Fujiwara for hyperbolic groups and mapping class groups.

Abstract:We determine the cohomology of the closed Drinfeld stratum of $p$-Deligne--Lusztig schemes of Coxeter type attached to arbitrary inner forms of unramified groups over a local non-archimedean field. We prove that the corresponding torus weight spaces are supported in exactly one cohomological degree, and are pairwisely non-isomorphic irreducible representations of the pro-unipotent radical of the corresponding parahoric subgroup. We also prove that all Moy--Prasad quotients of this stratum are maximal varieties, and we investigate the relation between the resulting representations and Kirillov's orbit method.

On modulo $\ell$ cohomology of $p$-adic Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $GL_n$

Abstract:In 1976, Deligne and Lusztig realized the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type inside étale cohomology of certain algebraic varieties. Recently, a $p$-adic version of this theory started to emerge: there are $p$-adic Deligne-Lusztig spaces, whose cohomology encodes representation theoretic information for $p$-adic groups - for instance, it partially realizes local Langlands correspondence with characteristic zero coefficients. However, the parallel case of coefficients of positive characteristic $\ell \neq p$ has not been inspected so far. The purpose of this article is to initiate such an inspection. In particular, we relate cohomology of certain $p$-adic Deligne-Lusztig spaces to Vignéras's modular local Langlands correspondence for $\mathbf{GL}_n$.

Abstract:We compute the Borel equivariant cohomology ring of the left $K$-action on a homogeneous space $G/H$, where $G$ is a connected Lie group, $H$ and $K$ are closed, connected subgroups and $2$ and the torsion primes of the Lie groups are units of the coefficient ring. As a special case, this gives the singular cohomology rings of biquotients $H \backslash G / K$. This depends on a version of the Eilenberg-Moore theorem developed in the appendix, where a novel multiplicative structure on the two-sided bar construction $\mathbf{B}(A',A,A")$ is defined, valid when $A' \leftarrow A \to A"$ is a pair of maps of homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras.

Abstract:We obtain vanishing ranges for the mod $p$ cohomology of alternating subgroups of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups. Here a Coxeter group $W$ is $p$-free if the order of the product $st$ is prime to $p$ for every pair of Coxeter generators $s,t$ of $W$. Our result generalizes those for alternating groups formerly proved by Kleshchev-Nakano and Burichenko. As a byproduct, we obtain vanishing ranges for the twisted cohomology of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups with coefficients in the sign representations. In addition, a weak version of the main result is proved for a certain class of infinite Coxeter groups.

Abstract:We calculate mod-p cohomology of extended powers, and their group completions which are free infinite loop spaces. We consider the cohomology of all extended powers of a space together and identify a Hopf ring structure with divided powers within which cup product structure is more readily computable than on its own. We build on our previous calculations of cohomology of symmetric groups, which are the cohomology of extended powers of a point, the well-known calculation of homology, and new results on cohomology of symmetric groups with coefficients in the sign representation. We then use this framework to understand cohomology rings of related spaces such as infinite extended powers and free infinite loop spaces. v2 typo in gradings of Theorem 2.35 corrected.

Abstract:We prove that the rational cohomology group $H^{11}(\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ vanishes unless $g = 1$ and $n \geq 11$. We show furthermore that $H^k(\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n})$ is pure Hodge-Tate for all even $k \leq 12$ and deduce that $\# \bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is surprisingly well approximated by a polynomial in $q$. In addition, we use $H^{11}(\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,11})$ and its image under Gysin push-forward for tautological maps to produce many new examples of moduli spaces of stable curves with nonvanishing odd cohomology and non-tautological algebraic cycle classes in Chow cohomology.
