Abstract:With the advantages of high distance resolution, long detection distance, small size, and low power consumption, Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (GM-APD) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has excellent potential for applications such as three-dimensional earth mapping and autonomous driving. The reconstruction for GM-APD LiDAR is based on the statistics of multiple-laser-pulse data, leading to a long imaging time. There are problems such as blurring when the targets are high-speed, which limits its application scope. A reconstruction algorithm of the dynamic scene for GM-APD LiDAR is proposed in this paper to address this problem. Firstly, the motion features (such as velocity and position) of the targets in the scene are extracted by applying the Hough transform and used as a basis to isolate the targets' echo from the background noise, significantly reducing the noise interference. With these features, the data are corrected for the spatial location to attenuate or eliminate the effects caused by the targets' motion. Finally, the reconstruction is completed utilizing parameter estimation. Also, we discuss the super-resolution reconstruction capability of this algorithm with sufficient data. Recon-struction results of the scene with targets moving at 100-300 m/s are demonstrated at last. Compared to the conventional algorithms, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is improved by 3-4 dB, and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of distance is improved by 6-10 times. In addition to a super-resolution reconstruction of the dynamic scene, this method also enables the detection, motion feature extraction, and position prediction of high-speed moving targets in the scene, significantly expanding the application scope of GM-APD LiDAR and having good practical application value.

Abstract:Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (GM-APD) is a single-photon-detection device characterized by high sensitivity and fast response, which enables it to detect echo signals of distant targets effectively. Given that weak and small targets possess relatively small volumes and occupy only a small number of pixels, relying solely on neighborhood information for target reconstruction proves to be difficult. Furthermore, during long-distance detection, the optical reflection cross-section is small, making signal photons highly susceptible to being submerged by noise. In this paper, a noise fitting and removal algorithm (NFRA) is proposed. This algorithm can detect the position of the echo signal from the photon statistical histogram submerged by noise and facilitate the reconstruction of weak and small targets. To evaluate the NFRA method, this paper establishes an optical detection system for remotely detecting active single-photon weak and small targets based on GM-APD. Taking unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as weak and small targets for detection, this paper compares the target reconstruction effects of the peak-value method and the neighborhood method. It is thereby verified that under the conditions of a 7 km distance and a signal-to-background ratio (SBR) of 0.0044, the NFRA method can effectively detect the weak echo signal of the UAV.

Abstract:Array GM-APD lidar only reconstructs one response distance per pixel, resulting in 3D point clouds sparse. This paper proposes a 3D point cloud reconstruction algorithm using echo waveforms directly. First, combining empirical mode decomposition and the array GM-APD lidar echo waveform characteristics to extract multiple target response distances per pixel. Then, assuming per-pixel target surface rotation to resolve the shared azimuth and polar angles of multiple response distances. Calculate the rotation angles using the decomposed distance difference and by minimizing the plane fitting error. Finally, reconstruct the 3D point cloud by rotation translation transformation. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the Chamfer Distance of the reconstructed 3D point cloud by over 10 % compared to the original. The reconstructed 3D point cloud of buildings and vehicles shows lower sparsity and stepwise, and the reconstructed 3D point cloud for each target in the multiple-target scene is unaffected by others.

Abstract:Efficient photon counting imaging of long-range targets is challenging, especially in low signal-to-back ratio (SBR) situations. In this paper, a synchronized pseudo-random time coding detection method for Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (Gm-APD) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is proposed, which realizes Gm-APD LiDAR long-range detection by combining pseudo-random time coding and time of flight, and the multiple peaks are used to de-noise the image at the image level. Scenes of building with different SBR are simulated with Monte Carlo methods, and the effect of coding length on algorithm performance is discussed and compared with the performance of non-coding algorithms. The high performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by field experiments in low SBR scenes. Moreover, the proposed algorithm improves the target reconstruction correctness ratio by 70% over the other non-coding algorithms to 83% in the scene of building with SBR of 0.015, and has the smallest root mean square error (RMSE) of the distance. It improves the target integrity and provides the possibility of practical application of LiDAR target detection in very low SBR and long-range conditions, and even more support for target feature extraction and target recognition.

Abstract:Background light easily affects a Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (GM-APD) laser imaging, detection, and ranging (Lidar), and its detection ability is significantly reduced in strong light environments. Improving imaging performance under a low signal-to-back ratio has become critical. A GM-APD lidar noise-suppression algorithm based on a Markov random field is proposed. The field objective function and prior model are established using similar centre and adjacent pixel features. Both enhance the feature difference between a strong background light and a weak echo signal and improve the ability of weak echo signal reconstruction under an ultra-low signal-to-background ratio (SBR). Imaging experiments of long-distance building targets under varying illumination verified the noise-suppression ability of the algorithm. When the SBR is 0.0055, target recovery can reach 19.40%, and recovery of the whole array image can reach 60.94%. Compared with the sparse Poisson intensity reconstruction algorithm, the image signal-to-noise ratio is improved by 83 dB, and the average depth error was reduced by 36.14 cm. The proposed algorithm improves the imaging performance under ultra-low SBR; it significantly promotes the development of GM-APD lidar all-time applications.

Abstract:Geiger mode Avalanche Photo Diode(Gm-APD) laser radar in the case of high background noise during the daytime causes the peak of data distribution is firing by the noise but not the signal, this phenomenon leads to difficulty in extracting the peak characteristics of the signal, lost target pixels of three-dimensional range image and the low image signal-to-noise ratio by using the traditional non-parametric estimation signal extraction algorithm. Aiming at this problem, the bump hunting combination algorithm(BHC) is proposed, which extracts echo signal position under low SNR echo data, removes noise pixels and provides favorable conditions for target recognition by combining the convex features of echo signals and pixelwise cross correlation. According to the experimental results, when using 500 frames of echo data, BHC improved 15.10 % of the target reduction degree and 21 times of the image signal-to-noise ratio compared peak-picking method, increased 3.83 % of the target reduction degree and 15 times of the image signal-to-noise ratio compared the maximum likelihood estimation(MLE) algorithm.

Abstract:Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (GM-APD) focal plane array lidar has a high photon-sensitive detection ability and can acquire three-dimensional(3D) distance information. However, high noise intensity and limited detections can easily lead to the loss of target pixels in the range image, and excellent signal extraction and noise suppression technology become crucial. To solve this problem, we propose a guided image recovery (GIR) method which first uses the infrared image information to recover the GM-APD range image. Unlike image fusion technology, which sacrifices the true range value or the objectively existing 3D range image to get the complete image, it cannot only recover the complete image but also guarantee the 3D image is true. The main innovation of the proposed algorithm is to search the missing pixels of the range image based on the boundary information of infrared images and extracts the range values from their own original measurement data according to the adjacent pixels’ information. According to Monte Carlo simulation and experimental data analysis, the proposed method has excellent target recovery, noise suppression, and fidelity performance under limited detections and low SBRs conditions, which provides an important reference for GM-APD lidar real-time detection. It also provides a new research direction for GM-APD lidar range image reconstruction.

Abstract:Under low-light conditions, random light distribution and non-uniform pixel sensitivity reduce both the correlation and differences among pixels, while unstable intensity information significantly impairs the detection capability of Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (GM-APD) arrays. To address these challenges, a method based on multi-domain stability feature fusion is proposed. This approach utilizes a distance layer decomposition model to break down the global problem into localized sub-problems, effectively suppressing background noise through the fusion of stable features. Additionally, the Multi-scale Algorithm (MSA) was enhanced to selectively recover missing pixels and improve target reconstruction while preserving details. In imaging experiments conducted on targets under low-light conditions at night within remote, complex scenes, when the photon number was 0.0068 per pixel, the proposed method improved the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of the reconstructed images by more than 12 dB compared with the Non-local MSA. It significantly promotes the development of GM-APD lidar for all-time applications.

Abstract:The GM-APD lidar can detect the single-photon level echo signal and obtain three-dimensional range informa-tion, but the imaging results are greatly affected by noise and statistical frame number. Considering these problems, this paper proposes a photon-number systematic (PNS) algorithm under a few statistical frames in low SNR (signal-to-noise ratio). It includes three parts: (a) We realize range image recovery based on the signal photon number histogram with a match filtering algorithm by using the proposed normalized discrete waveform functions. (b) We propose a two-dimensional double-threshold approximation denoising algorithm, which is used for image-level denoising. (c) The neighborhood threshold smoothing algorithm is proposed to supplement the target missing pixels. It is verified by Monte Carlo simulation and experimental results that the proposed algo-rithm has a high recovery ratio, denoising, and fidelity performance under few-frames detection in different SNRs conditions. The experimental largest target recovery ratio of the proposed algorithm is about 92%, the peak signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 16.4, and the maximum average measure of structural similarity is more than 85% under 500 statistical frames. This paper provides a new processing scheme for GM-APD lidar range image re-covery under few-frames detection and low SNR, it lays the foundation for real-time and all-day monitoring.

Missing Information Reconstruction Method of Single Photon Imaging Lidar Based on Multi-Echo Extraction

Abstract:The imaging results of Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (GM-APD) laser detection and ranging (Lidar) is limited by the number of pixels and occlusion, and some details will be missing in the reconstruction results. A missing information reconstruction algorithm based on multi-echo extraction is proposed using Bump Hunting (BH) and spatial total variation features. Only a single GM-APD detector is used to achieve missing information reconstruction. The algorithm established a multi-echo extraction model by using the gradient feature distribution of echo, obtaining prior values of target position and waveform width, and then establishing a Gaussian fitting posterior model to assess prior accuracy and correct extraction results. For pixels with multi-echo, establish a local total variation feature optimization equation, complete the supplementation and spatial arrangement of multi-echo information, and achieve complete distance imaging. The resolution plate simulation results show that when N is 0.1-10, the proposed method can reconstruct the most missing information with good noise stability. The verification results of 900 m and 1 km long-distance outfield experiment data show that the proposed method can obtain twice the details of the Photon Processing for Active Single-photon Imaging (CASPI) and D Shin's methods. This study is significant for developing single-photon LiDAR target detection and recognition applications.

Abstract:Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (Gm-APD) array LiDAR has become the current research focus due to its sensitive response, high precision, and easy integration. However, due to the limitations of the fabrication process and manufacturing cost, the images collected by Gm-APD array LiDAR have very serious image low-resolution problems. Since the intensity map and depth map of the target can be obtained simultaneously by relying on single-source data from Gm-APD array LiDAR, we propose a Gm-APD LiDAR single-source data self-guided method. We propose to first perform Gm-APD LiDAR intensity map superresolution, and then use the processed intensity map with the corresponding depth map for guided superresolution. The advantage of this process is that instead of using high-resolution (HR) imaging devices from different domains, it relies only on single-source data from Gm-APD LiDAR to obtain HR depth map, thus eliminating the need for additional image registration work and providing wider applicability. We investigate the feasibility of the proposed single-source data processing method and evaluate our method on the real Gm-APD LiDAR single-source data with an average peak signal-to-noise ratio of 42.21, which better preserves the original distance information of the targets while providing visually sharper outputs.

Abstract:To assist in the implementation of a fine 3D terrain reconstruction of the scene in remote sensing applications, an automatic joint calibration method between light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and visible light camera based on edge points refinement and virtual mask matching is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is used to solve the problem of inaccurate edge estimation of LiDAR with different horizontal angle resolutions and low calibration efficiency. First, we design a novel calibration target, adding four hollow rectangles for fully automatic locating of the calibration target and increasing the number of corner points. Second, an edge refinement strategy based on background point clouds is proposed to estimate the target edge more accurately. Third, a two-step method of automatically matching between the calibration target in 3D point clouds and the 2D image is proposed. Through this method, i.e., locating firstly and then fine processing, corner points can be automatically obtained, which can greatly reduce the manual operation. Finally, a joint optimization equation is established to optimize the camera's intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of LiDAR and camera. According to our experiments, we prove the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method through projection and data consistency verifications. The accuracy can be improved by at least 15.0% when testing on the comparable traditional methods. The final results verify that our method is applicable to LiDAR with large horizontal angle resolutions.
Improvement of detection probability and ranging performance of Gm-APD LiDAR with spatial correlation and adaptive adjustment of the aperture diameter

Abstract:<p>Gm-APD (Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode) is widely used in the LiDAR (Light detection and ranging) system for its excellent photon detection capability. The triggering probability of Gm-APD is closely dependent on the absolute intensity and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the echo, which limits the detection results in the daytime. In order to improve target's detection probability under a limited amount of statistics in the daytime, it proposed a detection scheme by using the spatial correlation and adaptive adjustment of the aperture diameter (AAAD) to achieve optimal target detection results in the daytime, besides, a MLE (Maximum Likelyhood Estimation) based ranging walk-error correction method was also put forward for the limited number of measurement. Firstly, considering the strategies of AAAD and spatial correlation, as well as the LiDAR ranging equation and Poisson triggering probability model, the detection probability model and ranging performance model of the scheme of spatial correlation and AAAD were built in this paper. Subsequently, the detection probability and ranging performance of the proposed scheme were theoretically analyzed, besides, a ranging walk-error correction strategy was put forward based on the MLE method. The theoretical analysis results showed that the proposed detection scheme could increase the utilization of echo photons and improve the amount of echo's triggering statistics; moreover, the Monte Carlo simulation results showed that in the case of a limited amount of statistics, the target detection scheme and ranging walk-error correction strategy could effectively improve the target detection probability and obtain a smaller ranging walk-error than the traditional detection scheme. Finally, the Gm-APD LiDAR was used to experimentally verify the proposed scheme, and the results showed that the scheme could effectively improve the echo's triggering probability with 400 measurements; the indoor experiment showed that the triggering probability could be improved by 7.54 times at most for white wall, and the white wall's target restoration ratio could reach 100% which was enhanced by more than 100%; besides, the outdoor experiment in the daytime showed that the target's restoration ratio could reach 75.54% and 99.45% for two investigated regions which were enhanced by 659.2% and 57.4%. Moreover, a high ranging accuracy could be maintained through ranging walk-error correction strategy, ranging walk-errors of -9mm, 12mm and 14mm under 400 measurements were achieved for white wall, concrete slab and black paper respectively. It effectively improved the ranging performance compared with the traditional detection scheme, and it completely satisfied the far-range detection. This paper can provide effective solutions for laser detection and ranging with Gm-APD in the daytime.</p>

Assessment of Lateral Structural Details of Targets Using Principles of Full-Waveform Light Detection and Ranging

Abstract:In remote sensing domains, it is difficult to evaluate the lateral structures using the current remote sensing techniques. The mathematical peak intensity formula of the echo waveform modulated by the lateral structures establishes a quantitative yet concise relationship between the peak intensity and the lateral structures, enabling the retrieval of lateral structural details in terms of inverting the formula. The process of the retrieval includes: 1) mathematical formula derivation; 2) target shape discrimination; and 3) mathematical formula inversion. Using the sizes estimated from the simulated echo waveforms, this study demonstrates how the estimated lateral structures are affected by the number of lateral structural parameters to be solved, instrument noise, movement direction, target shape, and target size. The results reveal that for unknown target size and lateral structures, the averaged size errors are 0.56% and 4.30%, respectively. When the instrument noise is absent and only the target size is unknown, the size error averaged over four shapes is 0.3%, and the size error averaged over the square, circle, and triangle is 0.04%. When only the size is unknown, the size errors of the rectangle, square, circle, and triangle estimated by fitting the experimental peak intensity with the formula are 2.41%, 3.47%, 0.89%, and 1.42%, respectively. The small size errors prove the possibility of retrieving the lateral sizes at a centimeter-level resolution and a distance of hundreds of kilometers, which is of great practical significance in precisely mapping the lateral structures of 3-D targets using full-waveform light detection and ranging (FW-LiDAR).

3D imaging model of airborne LiDAR system

Abstract:A mathematical model of the airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system based on the GM-APD arrays is established in the behavioral level. The model adopts Poisson probability distribution to calculate the intensity of the echo-laser-signal. After the detection, the range of the target is obtained by the time-of-flight (ToF) method. Then, the system outputs the range and intensity images taking advantages of the peak-value algorithm. The sources and the impact of the noise are analyzed in the model. In condition of 3km distance, 33uJ laser pulse energy, 20 KHz repetition frequency and 200 accumulations each period, the simulation results show that the system is capable to get clear pictures of the target in distance with 1 miscount per frame time. The standard deviation of the calculated range is 0.0219m. The model also demonstrates the validity of capturing the moving target. The proposed model is suitable in systematic design of the airborne LiDAR, which is promising in civil and military applications.

Abstract:When imaging through fog using Geiger mode avalanche photon diode (Gm-APD) ladar, strong backscattering photons make it difficult to effectively extract an accurate target signal via the traditional peak-select algorithm. Single-parameter estimation (SPEA) is proposed in this paper to solve this problem. First, the physical properties of the gamma distribution model’s characteristics are analyzed, and the model is improved based on Gm-APD ladar’s counting characteristics. Next, a Monte Carlo simulation for photons propagating in fog is conducted. The SPEA’s backscattering distribution has the highest correlation with the original backscattering photon distribution. Realistic imaging data are processed through fog, and the SPEA has the best recovering effect, achieving 71% recovery using 20,000 frames. This study demonstrates that the SPEA enables imaging through fog with Gm-APD ladar.

Abstract:LiDAR echo intensity information can reflect the reflection characteristics of the target surface, and can be used as an important data source in the aspects of LiDAR point cloud image vision, classification and feature extraction. Geiger mode avalanche photodiode (Gm-APD) has the ability of single photon detection and high range sensitivity, and is widely used in the field of lidar. The number of statistics is often taken as the target intensity information obtained. In order to make the intensity image accurately reflect the reflection characteristics of the target surface, a kind of intensity information correction method of Gm-APD lidar is proposed. By eliminating the distortion caused by the detection model and target distance of the detector, the average reflectivity estimation error can be increased from 51.97% to 8.86%. Aiming at Gm-APD lidar, the determination method of parameters in parameter estimation method is systematically described in this paper. On this basis, the calibration of the laser emitter can improve the uniformity of the target, and the standard deviation is increased from 1.1818 to 0.0050. The proposed scheme can provide a reliable data source for target recognition, classification and feature extraction based on Gm-APD intensity image.

Abstract:The photon-counting light laser detection and ranging (LiDAR), especially the Geiger mode avalanche photon diode (Gm-APD) LiDAR, can obtain three-dimensional images of the scene, with the characteristics of single-photon sensitivity, but the background noise limits the imaging quality of the laser radar. In order to solve this problem, a depth image estimation method based on a two-dimensional (2D) Kaniadakis entropy thresholding method is proposed which transforms a weak signal extraction problem into a denoising problem for point cloud data. The characteristics of signal peak aggregation in the data and the spatio-temporal correlation features between target image elements in the point cloud-intensity data are exploited. Through adequate simulations and outdoor target-imaging experiments under different signal-to-background ratios (SBRs), the effectiveness of the method under low signal-to-background ratio conditions is demonstrated. When the SBR is 0.025, the proposed method reaches a target recovery rate of 91.7%, which is better than the existing typical methods, such as the Peak-picking method, Cross-Correlation method, and the sparse Poisson intensity reconstruction algorithm (SPIRAL), which achieve a target recovery rate of 15.7%, 7.0%, and 18.4%, respectively. Additionally, comparing with the SPIRAL, the reconstruction recovery ratio is improved by 73.3%. The proposed method greatly improves the integrity of the target under high-background-noise environments and finally provides a basis for feature extraction and target recognition.

Effect of Optical-Scattering Characteristics with Modified Kernel-Based Model on the Triggering Probability of Gm-APD

Abstract:It is not feasible to use the Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (Gm-APD) detection model to guide detection quantitatively during daytime, because of the incompletely built echo intensity model. In this study because the background noise and the signal light are both modulated by the target's optical-scattering characteristics (OSCs), a hybrid light-scattering model (the modified kernel-based bidirectional reflection distribution function (BRDF) model) is substituted in the laser detection and ranging (LADAR) ranging equation. In such a BRDF model, the Li-Liang-BRDF model is taken as the kernel, and the background noise equivalent intensity coefficient is employed to link the background noise part to the laser echc part. According to the results of a Gm-APD outdoor experiment, the proposed LADAR ranging equation is applicable to detection during daytime, and the noise scaling factor d(theta s) is not a constant with the variation of solar zenith angle; the signal intensities in the theoretical and experimental results only exhibit a difference of 5%. The effects of various factors (e.g., solar zenith angle, LADAR observation angle, and different target materials) on the echo signal-to-noise ratio and triggering probability are analyzed by the proposed LADAR ranging equation. Moreover, a maximum-likelihood estimation-based theoretical method is proposed to calculate the maximum detection range during daytime. Subsequently, the change law of the detection range in daytime is analyzed, and the calculated detection range of the developed Gm-APD LADAR reaches 3.5 km under an actual daytime background. This study can provide theoretical support and formulates several strategies for Gm-APD detection in daytime. Furthermore, novel ideas can be proposed to calculate theoretically the effective detection range of Gm-APD LADAR. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
