Abstract:Lv et al. describe an optogenetic approach to manipulate microglia and find the enhancement of Aβ clearance and synapse elimination, which are selectively modulated by the complement C1q. This study provides a synergistic strategy for targeting microglia to reduce toxic protein aggregates in neurodegenerative diseases while preserving synaptic connections.
