Abstract:This study explores the relationship between Barents-Kara Sea (BKS) sea ice concentration (SIC) and East Asian (EA) surface air temperature (SAT) during February from 1958 to 2023, using long-term reanalysis datasets and the Linear Baroclinic Model. Results reveal that February BKS SIC has a significant impact on cooling in EA, particularly in Central and Eastern China. A major shift in the relationship between BKS SIC and EA SAT occurred around the 2000s. Before the 2000s, the correlation between BKS SIC and EA SAT was weak and insignificant; however, a strong positive correlation emerged afterward. This interdecadal change is possibly related to the interdecadal variations of the BKS SIC, which further triggered the anomalies in tropospheric circulation and wave activities. After the 2000s, SIC decreased over the northern of BKS, corresponding to a positive–negative dipole pattern in geopotential height over the BKS-EA region, while enhances the Siberian High, Aleutian Low, and jet streams over EA, leading to more rapid and intense cold air incursions that reduce SAT. Further analysis highlights the role of stratospheric polar vortex (SPV) in the interdecadal variations between BKS SIC and EA SAT. The results show that the relationship between BKS SIC and SPV displacement was weak before the 2000s but became significant afterward. Reduced BKS SIC after the 2000s leads to a shift of the SPV towards Eurasia, inducing positive potential vorticity anomalies over Siberia and negative potential vorticity anomalies downstream. This shift enhances positive geopotential height anomalies in the troposphere, contributing to the decrease in EA SAT. These findings suggest that SPV shifts towards Eurasia play a key role in mediating the cooling effect of reduced BKS SIC on EA SAT, providing an additional factor for forecasting late-winter EA SAT.
