Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) enable efficient thermal energy storage via latent heat absorption during phase transformation. Encapsulating PCMs enhances heat transfer while preventing material leakage. This study utilizes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to numerically investigate melting dynamics in encapsulated PCMs, elucidating key design parameters influencing performance. Spherical encapsulations containing paraffin wax and hydrated salt PCMs were simulated using CFD. By systematically varying the encapsulation radius from 16-58 mm and shell thickness from 18-72 mm, we found that increasing radius exponentially raises melting time due to declining surface area to volume ratios. This indicates subdividing PCM volumes into smaller capsules can accelerate heat transfer. Furthermore, an optimal 54-55 mm stainless steel shell thickness was identified, beyond which efficiency diminishes due to reducing surface area effects. Comparing PCM types revealed the salt hydrate doubled latent heat storage density to 9.032 $/kWh versus paraffin, showcasing the importance of PCM selection. These CFD simulations deliver crucial insights into tailoring size, encapsulation, and PCM parameters to optimize encapsulated systems for sustainable thermal energy storage.
