Abstract:Flat lenses when compared to curved surface lenses have the advantages of being aberration free and they offer a compact design necessary for a myriad of electro-optical applications. In this paper we present flat and ultra-thin lenses based on graphene, the world’s thinnest known material. Monolayers and low number multilayers of graphene were fabricated into Fresnel zones to produce Fresnel zone plates which utilize the absorption properties of graphene for their operation. The working of the lens and their performance in the visible and terahertz regimes was analyzed computationally. Experimental measurements were also performed to characterize the lens in the visible regime and a good agreement was obtained with the simulations. The work demonstrates the principle of atom thick graphene-based lenses, with perspectives for ultra-compact integration.

Abstract:The recent emergence of liquid crystals of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials not only has allowed us to explore novel phenomena of macroscopically aligned 2D nanomaterials but also has provided a route toward their controlled assembly into three-dimensional functional macrostructures. Using flow-induced mechanical alignment, we prepared flakes of graphene oxide (GO) in different orientational orders and demonstrated that GO liquid crystals (LC) can be used as rewritable media for reflective displays without polarizing optics. With a wire or stick as a pen, we can make the surface of GO LC reflective and bright, and we can then manually draw lines, curves, and any patterns with dark appearance. The contrast between bright and dark features is due to anisotropic optical responses of ordered GO flakes. Since optical anisotropy is an intrinsic property of 2D structures, our observations and demonstration represent one of many potential applications of macroscopically aligned 2D nanomaterials.

Abstract:Non-iridescent structural colors with wide viewing angles are produced by amorphous photonic structure (APS) and have received increasing attention. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate of non-iridescent, crack-free and functional structural colors, simultaneously. Here, the flexible lamellar nanostructures of graphene oxide (GO) are introduced as a black additive to fabricate amorphous, crack-free structural colors. The color hue and spectral purity of APS film can be easily tuned by adjusting the diameter of spheres and concentration of GO. Furthermore, after reduction treatment, the APS film possesses excellent visibility, flexibility and conductivity, paving the way toward their practical applications in flexible sensors, solar cells and full-color paper-like displays.

Abstract:A new design and fabrication of flat optical lens by use of 90-degree volume holographic grating recording geometry is presented. It is recorded by the interference of a plane wave and a spherical wave in a Fe-doped LiNbO3. The flat optical lens can laterally transfer and focus the plane wave which perpendicularly incidents on the planar crystal surface. The optimal switching from recording to thermal fixing is taken into consideration in order to obtain the nonvolatile hologram with maximum fixing efficiency. The flat optical lens with different recording and reconstructing wavelength has also been discussed. The flat optical lens has the advantages of light weight, laterally transferring and focusing, small duty ratio, and easy for the microstructure integration. The testing results measured verify that the flat optical lens can successfully be used for the free space optical communication.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for miniaturized optical systems has placed stringent requirements on the core element: lenses. Developing ultrathin flat lenses with a varifocal capability and broadband spectral response is critical for diverse applications, but remains challenging and has been the focus of intensive research. The recent demonstration of tunable focal length for a single wavelength with metalenses marked an important milestone for transforming the complex and bulky tunable lens kit into a single flat lens. However, achieving color imaging with desired tunability over the entire visible spectrum essential for practical applications still remains elusive. Here we propose and demonstrate experimentally a broadband varifocal graphene metalens (250 nm in thickness) covering the entire visible spectrum. It is able to simultaneously tune the focal lengths for different wavelengths continuously. By laterally stretching the lens, an over 20% focal length tuning range can be achieved for red (650 nm), green (550 nm), and blue (450 nm) light as three example wavelengths. Zoom imaging of different objects located along the axial direction has been demonstrated at these wavelengths by simply controlling the stretch ratio of the graphene metalens. Abstract:With superior optical properties, high flexibility in engineering its material properties, and strong capability for large-scale on-chip integration, graphene oxide (GO) is an attractive solution for on-chip integration of two-dimensional (2D) materials to implement functional integrated photonic devices capable of new features. Over the past decade, integrated GO photonics, representing an innovative merging of integrated photonic devices and thin GO films, has experienced significant development, leading to a surge in many applications covering almost every field of optical sciences. This paper reviews the recent advances in this emerging field, providing an overview of the optical properties of GO as well as methods for the on-chip integration of GO. The main achievements made in GO hybrid integrated photonic devices for diverse applications are summarized. The open challenges as well as the potential for future improvement are also discussed.

Abstract:The development of ultrathin Fresnel lenses has revolutionized the lens technology and provided great prospects for the miniaturization of electromagnetic systems. Despite considerable advances in microtechnology, a scalable fabrication strategy to achieve ultralow profile microwave lenses is yet to be developed. Here, we report on a novel strategy to create ultrathin and essentially flat Fresnel lenses using graphene rings. We show that monolayer or multilayer graphene can be microstructured into a Fresnel lens to utilize the unique transmission properties of graphene. We design different Fresnel lenses and investigate their performance in the microwave regime both numerically and experimentally. It is shown that one can change the intensity of the focused wave without shifting the focusing point by altering the number of the graphene layers. The good agreement between our experimental results and the results of numerical simulations demonstrates the feasibility of atom-thick (about 10−7 of the operating wavelength) graphene-based lenses and shows their potential for ultra-compact integration.

Abstract:We propose a wideband visible (VIS) and near infrared (NIR) light reflective flat lens with switching capability base on hybrid graphene-metasurface structure. This tunable flat lens structure consists of a slotted gold reflector substrate, a graphene monolayer and TiO2 nanofins that provide excellent focusing performance and tunability in the VIS and NIR range. In order to achieve the switching feature, a bi-functional device capable of switching reflection/absorption modes is required. To this end, the gold substrate with two cross slots has been used to create absorption properties and a graphene layer has been used to change the intensity of absorption and reflection. The switching property for incident light with circular polarization arises from uniformly changing the chemical potential of the graphene layer. By setting the chemical potential of graphene, μc, equal to 1.1 eV, we obtained the reflection property. The reflection mode exhibits a broadband (715–800 nm) optical response with high polarization conversion efficiency (more than 70 %). On the other hand, by choosing μc = 0.75 eV, the absorption feature is created at the wavelength of 700–780 nm. The reflected light can be focused on an arbitrary position above the structure by rotating the TiO2 nanofins with the help of Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase theory. In addition to obtaining the single and dual focus tunable flat lenses, we have also presented a multifunction configuration that can switch between different modes, such as non-focus, single and dual focus modes. Such switchable flat lenses can have various applications in imaging and sensing systems.

Abstract:Dispersion control is a critical aspect in nano-optical systems. Moreover, chromatic aberration significantly impacts image quality. Despite metasurfaces being a novel approach to tackle chromatic aberration in diffractive lenses, numerous challenges hinder their practical implementation due to the complexity of 3D fabrication techniques and high manufacturing costs. In contrast, ultra-thin graphene oxide lenses are simpler and less expensive to manufacture. The optical performance of graphene oxide lenses, such as high focusing efficiency, large depth of field, wide bandwidth, and zooming capability, depends on the design of the positional arrangement of reduced graphene oxide regions. In this study, we utilized the self-constructed datasets to train machine learning models based on the structure of the graphene oxide lens and combined it with intelligent optimization algorithms. This approach facilitated the design of the graphene oxide achromatic lens in multi-wavelengths with high-performance. Experimental results substantiate that the designed ultra-thin graphene oxide lens, with a thickness of ~200 nm, effectively controls dispersion across multiple incident wavelengths (450, 550, and 650 nm) and achieves super resolution with consistent intensity at the focal point. Our graphene oxide lens holds the potential for integration into micro-optical systems that demand dispersion control, providing broad applications in optical imaging, optical communication, the biomedical field, and beyond.

Novel tunable graphene-based metasurface of metalens

Abstract:We propose a graphene-based metasurface of metalens, which consists of a ring structure composed of double oblique slits and four semicircular grooves. As the thickness of the base layer increases with the radius, the propagation length shows a decreasing trend and the effective refractive index is the opposite. Under the action of the incident wave at 632.8 nm, the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) generated in the double oblique slits interfere with the semicircular grooves at different positions to form different phase delays. SPPs propagate to a distant focus, and appear the focusing phenomenon in space, with the focal length and full height at half maximum reaching 2.7 mu m and 284 nm, respectively. At the same time, the focusing intensity can be flexibly adjusted by changing the graphene Fermi level. Finally, the designed metalens was used for lithography research, and the contrast ratio was 0.98. The research of this metalens has been widely used in energy harvesting, imaging and sensing.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Ultrathin flat metalenses have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional diffractive lenses, offering new possibilities for myriads of miniaturization and interfacial applications. Graphene-based materials can achieve both phase and amplitude modulations simultaneously at a single position due to the modification of the complex refractive index and thickness by laser conversion from graphene oxide into graphene like materials. In this work, we develop graphene oxide metalenses to precisely control phase and amplitude modulations and to achieve a holistic and systematic lens design based on a graphene-based material system. We experimentally validate our strategies via demonstrations of two graphene oxide metalenses: one with an ultra-long (~16λ) optical needle, and the other with axial multifocal spots, at the wavelength of 632.8 nm with a 200 nm thin film. Our proposed graphene oxide metalenses unfold unprecedented opportunities for accurately designing graphene-based ultrathin integratable devices for broad applications.
Electrically tunable graphene plasmonic lens: from Maxwell Fisheye Lens to Luneburg Lens

Abstract:A graphene plasmonic lens with an electrically tunable focal length is proposed and numerically investigated. The design philosophy of the proposed tunable lens is based on the nonlinear relationship of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) wave index with respect to chemical potential of graphene. By controlling the gate voltage of graphene, the proposed lens can be continuously tuned from a Maxwell Fisheye lens to a Luneburg lens. A ray-tracing method is employed to find out the corresponding gate voltages for various focal lengths. Full-wave EM simulations using COMSOL show that excellent focusing performances can be achieved. This work offers a new way in exploiting active transformational plasmonic elements in the mid-infrared region.

Abstract:Taking advantage of nonuniform conductivity distributions on graphene, the realization of a plasmonic lens with electrically tunable focal lengths is proposed and numerically investigated. The philosophy of the reconfigurable lens focusing is the nonlinear relation between surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) wave index and chemical potential of graphene. Upon tuning the gate voltage between graphene and ground, the graphene-based Maxwell Fisheye lens can be transformed to Luneburg lens. The ray-tracing method is employed to find out the exit angles for rays with different incident angles. Full-wave simulations showing excellent focusing performances are achieved.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate ultrathin flat lenses with a thickness of 7 Å, which corresponds to the fundamental physical limit of the thickness of the material, is fabricated in a large area, monolayer, CVD-prepared tungsten chalcogenides single crystals using the low-cost flexible laser writing method. The lenses apply the ultra-high refractive index to introduce abrupt amplitude modulation of the incident light to achieve three-dimensional (3D) focusing diffraction-limited resolution (0.5{\lambda}) and a focusing efficiency as high as 31%. An analytical physical model based diffraction theory is derived to simulate the focusing process, which shows excellent agreement with the experimental results.
