Abstract:<p>Electronic skins (e‐skins) that mimic the thermosensation and mechanosensation functionalities of natural skin are highly desired for the emerging fields of prosthetics and robotics. Advances in the materials and architecture of e‐skins have been made; nevertheless, sensing mechanism innovations are rarely explored. Here, inspired by the skin sensory behaviors, a single potentiometric sensing scheme for both thermosensation and mechanosensation functionalities are presented. Through careful materials selection, component optimization, and structure configuration, the coupling effect between thermosensation and mechanosensation can be significantly minimized. Such a potentiometric sensing scheme enables one to create a new class of energy‐efficient e‐skin with distinctive characteristics that are highly analogous to those of natural human skin. The e‐skin reported here features ultralow power consumption (at nanowatt level), greatly simplified operation (only voltage output), ultrahigh sensitivity (non‐contact sensing capability), all‐solution‐processing fabrication, and, more importantly, good capability for simultaneous monitoring/mapping of both thermal and mechanical stimulations. In addition to proposing a new sensory mechanism, integration of the dual‐functional e‐skin with a soft robotic gripper for object manipulation is demonstrated. The presented concise yet efficient sensing scheme for both thermosensation and mechanosensation opens up previously unexplored avenues for the future design of skin prosthetics, humanoid robotics, and wearable electronics.</p>

Abstract:Electronic skins (e-skins) with multifunctional sensing functions have attracted a lot of attention due to their promising applications in intelligent robotics, human-machine interfaces, and wearable healthcare systems. Here, we report a multifunctional e-skin based on patterned metal films for tactile sensing of pressure and temperature with a broad linear response range by implementing the single sensing mechanism of piezoresistivity, which allows for the easy signal processing and simple device configuration. The sensing pixel features serpentine metal traces and spatially distributed microprotrusions. Experimental and numerical studies reveal the fundamental aspects of the multifunctional tactile sensing mechanism of the e-skin, which exhibits excellent flexibility and wearable conformability. The fabrication approach being compatible with the well-established microfabrication processes has enabled the scalable manufacturing of a large-scale e-skin for spatial tactile sensing in various application scenarios.

Abstract:Multifunctional electronic skins (e-skins), which mimic the somatosensory system of human skin, have been widely employed in wearable devices for intelligent robotics, prosthetics, and human health monitoring. Relatively low sensitivity and severe mutual interferences of multiple stimuli detection have limited the applications of the existing e-skins. To address these challenges, inspired by the physical texture of the natural fingerprint, a novel fully elastomeric e-skin is developed herein for highly sensitive pressure and temperature sensing. A region-partition strategy is utilized to construct the multifunctional fingerprint-shaped sensing elements, where strain isolation structure of indurated film patterns are further embedded to enhance the sensitivity and effectively reduce mutual interferences between the differentiated units. The fully elastomeric graphene/silver/silicone rubber nanocomposites are synthesized with tunable properties including conductivity and sensitivity to satisfy the requirements of highly sensitive pressure and temperature sensing as well as stretchable electrodes. A remarkable progress in sensitivities for both pressure and temperature, up to 5.53 kPa-1 in a wide range of 0.5-120 kPa and 0.42% ℃-1 in 25-60 ℃, respectively, are achieved with the inappreciable mutual interferences. Further studies demonstrate the great potential of the proposed e-skin in the next-generation wearable electronics for human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:Electronic skin (e-skin) has the potential to detect large-scale strain, which is typically achieved by integrating multiple strain sensors into an array. However, the latency and limited resolution of sensing have hindered its large-scale sensing applications. Here, we have developed a high-resolution detection sensing system capable of detecting static and dynamic strain with a simple fabrication process by combining capacitive and mechanoluminescent (ML) sensor units. An elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite film doped with ZnS:Cu and BaTiO3(BT) particles are fabricated as the functional film of the capacitive sensor. In contrast, the transparent electrode was fabricated on the surface of the as-prepared film. By incorporating BT nanoparticles into the elastic substrate, the ML intensity of the ZnS:Cu was improved up to 2.89 times that without BT addition, and the sensitivity of the capacitive sensor was increased as well. The capacitive part of the sensor presented a GF of 0.9 and good stability, while the ML part exhibited excellent performance, making it suitable for both static and dynamic sensing. Furthermore, the strain sensor integrated by 10 × 10 sensing units is demonstrated to detect large-scale strain with high resolution. Moreover, finger joint strain distribution tracking is achieved by attaching the strain sensor unit to the finger joint. With these characteristics, the e-skin may have great potential for bio-motion monitoring and human-computer interaction applications.

Abstract:Flexible electronic skin (e-skin) has been successfully utilized in diverse applications, including prosthesis sensing, body-motion monitoring and human-machine interfaces, due to its excellent mechanical properties and electrical characteristics. However, current e-skins are still relatively thick (> 10 mu m) and uncomfortable for long-term usage on the human body. Herein, an ultrathin skin-integrated strain sensor with miniaturized dimensions, based on the piezoresistive effect, with excellent stability and robustness, is introduced. The fractal curve-shaped Au electrode in a serpentine format, which is the dominant component of the strain sensor, is sensitive to ambient strain variations and can turn the mechanical motion into a stable electrical signal output. With the advanced design of metallic electrodes, the device presents good operational stability and excellent mechanical tolerance towards bending, stretching and twisting. The stain sensor allows intimate mounting onto the human epidermal surface for the detection of body motion. By adopting a liquid bandage as an encapsulation layer, the device exhibits an ultrathin thickness (6.2 mu m), high sensitivity towards mechanical deformations and capability for the clear detection of motion, such as walking, finger bending and the human pulse rate with identifiable electrical signals. Furthermore, the tattoo-like strain sensor is applied in robotic control by tracing finger bending motion and results in the smooth control of a robotic hand nearly without any detention. This e-skin design exhibits excellent potential for wearable electronics and human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:Electronic skins (e-skins) with monitoring capabilities have attracted extensive attention and are being widely employed in wearable devices for medical diagnosis. In particular, e-skins based on strain sensors have been reported extensively due to their simple structure and efficient performance in collecting human physiological information. Flexible sensors with high sensitivity, simplified fabrication, and low-cost are highly desired for human signal monitoring; this work provides a novel strain-sensing e-skin with micro-structures, which is simply made of modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and silver nanowires (AgNWs). The fabricated e-skin has great sensitivity towards strain changes, and its mechanical properties and sensitivity could be regulated by varying the micro-structures. Furthermore, the e-skin demonstrated significant capacity for monitoring human body movements, temperature changes, and spatial resolution, highlighting its great potential in personalized medicine.

Abstract:Electrodermal devices that capture the physiological response of skin are crucial for monitoring vital signals, but they often require convoluted layered designs with either electronic or ionic active materials relying on complicated synthesis procedures, encapsulation, and packaging techniques. Here, we report that the ionic transport in living systems can provide a simple mode of iontronic sensing and bypass the need of artificial ionic materials. A simple skin-electrode mechanosensing structure (SEMS) is constructed, exhibiting high pressure-resolution and spatial-resolution, being capable of feeling touch and detecting weak physiological signals such as fingertip pulse under different skin humidity. Our mechanical analysis reveals the critical role of instability in high-aspect-ratio microstructures on sensing. We further demonstrate pressure mapping with millimeter-spatial-resolution using a fully textile SEMS-based glove. The simplicity and reliability of SEMS hold great promise of diverse healthcare applications, such as pulse detection and recovering the sensory capability in patients with tactile dysfunction.

Abstract:Mechanoreceptor‐inspired electronic skin for multi‐modal tactile information decoding endows electronic skin (E‐skin) with human‐like tactile sensing ability. Here, mimicking the skin multi‐mechanoreceptor synergistic effect, a thin, soft, intelligent tactile sensor composed of an asymmetrically placed strain sensing units array is reported for multi‐modal tactile information decoding like shear force, normal force, and even 3D force. Multimodal force identification by electronic skin (E‐skin) provides comprehensive and precise tactile information that can enhance elaborated functions of fine tactile discrimination, robotic manipulation, and gesture recognition. However, it remains a great challenge to realize such complicated functions from a highly simplified E‐skin sensing system. Here, mimicking the multi‐mechanoreceptor synergistic effect in human skin, a simple, thin, soft, intelligent tactile sensor composed of an asymmetrically arrangement of strain sensing units array for multimodal tactile information decoding is reported. The E‐skin type tactile sensor exhibits good performance with excellent sensitivity for shear force (2.5 N–1), vertical force (0.11 kPa–1), that enables 3D force refactoring, as well as accurate recognition of sliding force for direction tracking. Another unique feature of the E‐skin type tactile sensor is the side force screen effect, that allows the tactile sensor to yield great accuracy and a gauge factor of 1492 in strain measuring. Furthermore, integration of the sensors into E‐skin array offers the capability of capturing dynamic and real‐time stress distribution on the hand in various conditions. This work provides a new route for complex force‐sensing from the simple structure and shows great potential in robotics, human‐machine interface, and virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR).

Abstract:The implementation of tactile functions in array sensors has created an urgent need for high-performance force sensors with both high linearity and sensitivity so as to ensure the uniformity and accuracy of acquisition of multiple sensing units in the array sensors. In addition, it still remains challenging to fabricate exquisite geometric constructions for integrating highly sensitive materials, extraordinary sensitivity, high stretchability, wide sensing range, and flexibility into a single type of pressure/strain sensor. Herein, a sensitive flexible sensor was fabricated that was composed of mixed-dimensional MXene-based nanocomposites as piezoresistive layers and Ecoflex layers as the encapsulation. The resultant sensors with MXene (Ti3C2T x )-ANF (aramid nanofiber)-BP (black phosphorus)-gold (Au) nanocomposites exhibited excellent electrical conductivity, ultrahigh press sensitivity of 0.4986 kPa–1 (0–1 kPa), reliable linearity (R 2 = 0.998), rapid response time of 12 ms, excellent durability over 4000 cycles, and ultrahigh tensile sensitivity of 9188.583. An 8 × 8 pixel electronic skin was fabricated by the as-prepared mixed-dimensional MXene-based sensors and tested in the identification of sliding movements and surface shape, and the good performance shows great potential applications in the fields of wearable devices, human–machine interaction, and robotics.

Abstract:<p>Human skin is equipped with slow adapting (SA) and fast adapting (FA) capabilities simultaneously. To mimic such functionalities, elaborately designed devices have been explored by integrating multiple sensing elements or adopting multimode sensing principles. However, the complicated fabrication, signal mismatch of different modules, complex operation, and high power‐consumption hinder their widespread applications. Here, a new type of single‐mode and self‐powered mechanoreceptor that can mimic both SA and FA via seamless fusion of complementary while compatible potentiometric and triboelectric sensing principles is reported. The resultant potentiometric–triboelectric hybridized mechanoreceptor exhibits distinctive features that are hard to achieve via currently existing methods, including single‐mode output (only voltage signal), greatly simplified operation (single‐measurement setup), ultralow power‐consumption (<1 nW), self‐adaptive response behavior, and good capability for resolving complex stimuli. Diverse mechanical characteristics, including magnitude, duration, frequency, applying and releasing speed, can be well interpreted with this single‐mode and self‐powered mechanoreceptor. Its promising application for monitoring object manipulations with a soft robotic gripper is explored. Furthermore, the versatility of the mechanoreceptor for resolving complex stimuli in diverse daily scenarios is demonstrated. This work presents a new design that will significantly simplify the fabrication/operation and meanwhile boost the functionality/energy‐efficiency of future electronic devices and smart systems.</p>

Ultralight Iontronic Triboelectric Mechanoreceptor with High Specific Outputs for Epidermal Electronics

Abstract:Abstract The pursuit to mimic skin exteroceptive ability has motivated the endeavors for epidermal artificial mechanoreceptors. Artificial mechanoreceptors are required to be highly sensitive to capture imperceptible skin deformations and preferably to be self-powered, breathable, lightweight and deformable to satisfy the prolonged wearing demands. It is still struggling to achieve these traits in single device, as it remains difficult to minimize device architecture without sacrificing the sensitivity or stability. In this article, we present an all-fiber iontronic triboelectric mechanoreceptor (ITM) to fully tackle these challenges, enabled by the high-output mechano-to-electrical energy conversion. The proposed ITM is ultralight, breathable and stretchable and is quite stable under various mechanical deformations. On the one hand, the ITM can achieve a superior instantaneous power density; on the other hand, the ITM shows excellent sensitivity serving as epidermal sensors. Precise health status monitoring is readily implemented by the ITM calibrating by detecting vital signals and physical activities of human bodies. The ITM can also realize acoustic-to-electrical conversion and distinguish voices from different people, and biometric application as a noise dosimeter is demonstrated. The ITM therefore is believed to open new sights in epidermal electronics and skin prosthesis fields.

Abstract:A mutually‐discriminating trimodal ionic skin is designed to simultaneously detect and decouple in‐plane strain, temperature, and pressure stimuli by means of multiple sensing principles of the mechanochromic, thermoresistive, and triboelectric effects. These three distinct capabilities manifest a highly sensitive response to a selective external stimulus while upholding high insensitivity to extraneous ones. Electronic skins (e‐skins) mimic multimodal sensing capabilities of various tactile receptors in natural skin. Herein, a stretchable chromotropic ionic skin is rationally designed to simultaneously detect and decouple multiple stimuli, including in‐plane strain, temperature, and pressure. The mutually discriminating trimodal ionic skin consists of mechanochromic, thermoresistive and triboelectric layers that individually function as strain, temperature and pressure sensors, respectively. These three distinct capabilities are integrated into the ionic skin which demonstrates highly sensitive responses to selective external stimuli while upholding high insensitivity to unwanted ones. The structural colors derived from mechanochromic photonic crystals of magnetic ferroferric oxide‐carbon nanoparticles respond to strains by color‐switching in the full visible spectrum, exhibiting appealing potential in interactive stress visualization. The temperature detection with an exceptional sensitivity of 20.44% per °C is enabled by the thermoresistive effect of ionic hydrogel, while oriented polymer chains embedded in the hydrogel decouple temperature from extraneous stimuli. The multilayer structure consisting of an ionic hydrogel film, a wrinkle‐patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film with gradient modulus design and a carbon nanotubes/PDMS electrode displays an extraordinary triboelectric effect with a strain‐ and temperature‐insensitive pressure sensing capability. The chromotropic ionic skin facilitates simultaneously accurate measurements, high discriminability and quantitative mapping of complex stimuli, offering new insights into emerging E‐skins.

Abstract:Fingertip is the region with the largest density of mechanoreceptors in human body. Inspired by its complicated anatomical structure, we design a fingertip-like electronic skin (e-skin) that can simultaneously detect the movements from lateral and vertical directions. The device includes three parts that correspond to fingerprint, epidermis and dermis of the human being, respectively. The fabricated double spiral carbon nanotube-polydimethylsiloxane (CNT-PDMS) electrodes and substrate mimic the structure of fingerprint and epidermis, respectively. Based on triboelectrification effect, the double spiral CNT-PDMS electrodes can generate alternating voltage with different frequencies when sliding across different rough surfaces, which behaves like fast adapting (FA) in real skin. Porous CNT-PDMS is used for detecting pressure, mimicking the function of slow adapting (SA) and the structure of dermis. A cost efficient way to fabricated porous CNT-PDMS is adopted and it can modulate the porosity and resistance at the same time, which provides a way to modulate its sensitivity. With the help of both sliding sensing and pressure sensing, this device can execute many complicated tasks such as differentiating roughness of surfaces and holding-releasing execution, which greatly expands the application fields of e-skin.

Abstract:Human skin sensing of mechanical stimuli originates from transduction of mechanoreceptors that converts external forces into electrical signals. Although imitating the spatial distribution of those mechanoreceptors can enable developments of electronic skins capable of decoupled sensing of normal/shear forces and strains, it remains elusive. We report a three-dimensionally (3D) architected electronic skin (denoted as 3DAE-Skin) with force and strain sensing components arranged in a 3D layout that mimics that of Merkel cells and Ruffini endings in human skin. This 3DAE-Skin shows excellent decoupled sensing performances of normal force, shear force, and strain and enables development of a tactile system for simultaneous modulus/curvature measurements of an object through touch. Demonstrations include rapid modulus measurements of fruits, bread, and cake with various shapes and degrees of freshness.

Abstract:Pressure and temperature are two important indicators for human skin perception. Electronic skin (E-skin) that mimics human skin within one single flexible sensor is beneficial for detecting and differentiating pressure and temperature and showing immunity from tensile strain disruptions. However, few studies have simultaneously realized these conditions. Herein, a flexible and strain-suppressed pressure-temperature dual-modal sensor based on conductive and microstructured metal-organic framework (MOF) films was reported and mainly prepared by in situ growing Ni-3(HiTP)(2) onto microstructured mixed cellulose (MSMC) substrates. The sensor exhibits distinguishable and strainsuppressed properties for pressure (sensing range up to 300 kPa, sensitivity of 61.61 kPa(-1), response time of 20 ms, and ultralow detection limit of 1 Pa) and temperature sensing (sensitivity of 57.1 mu V/K). Theoretical calculations successfully analyzed the mutually noninterfering mechanism between pressure and temperature. Owing to its effective perception in static and dynamic surroundings, this sensor has great potential applications, such as in electronic skin and smart prosthetics.

Abstract:Developing skin-like biomimetic material with electromechanical and sensing-sensitive properties, so-called E-skin, represents potentials to serve as novel sensors for surface strain measurement. Thus, a versatile bionic E-skin that can perceive strain signals was fabricated based on an as-fabricated electronic/ionic-conductive polymer, named as CNC@PPy/CS-Cit 3- /PVA gel. Notably, the citrate ion (Cit 3- ) could form tridentate coordination with the N-glucosamine units of chitosan (CS) to form the interpenetrating CS-Cit 3- polymer network. More importantly, the coordinated Cit 3- could enhance the mechanical properties of the gels and serve as moveable "bridges" among the cellulose nanocrystals@polypyrrole (CNC@PPy) nanoparticles. The as-developed conductive gels exhibited consecutive conductive networks with high conductivity (up to 0.97±0.05 S/m). The sensitivity of this electronic/ionic-conductive skin can be divided into two separate regions at different strain ranges (GF of 5.27 for strain under 0~2.8% and GF of 1.24 for strain under 2.8~650%, respectively). Owing to the rapid response time (~160 ms) and recovery time (~100 ms), remarkable fatigue resistance, and biocompatibility, the E-skin-based sensor can precisely distinguish the physiological signals or joint motions of the whole body. It was envisioned that the bionic E-skin would achieve broad applications as sensors in medical monitoring and implantable bioelectronics.
