Abstract:A solid liquid mixed tunable lens with multilayered structure is proposed. The designed lens utilizes a solid-state elastic polymer, optical liquid, and glass as the optical medium, and adjusts the focus by changing the surface curvature of the elastic polymer. The integrated structure of the tunable lens is presented, as well as detailed descriptions of the lens materials, fabrication, and assembling process. Images captured through the tunable lens under different displacement loads are presented, and the relationship among the displacement load, curvature radius, and effective focal length is analyzed. Additionally, the optical property of the tunable lens is simulated using the ZEMAX software. A change in focal length from 14.8 mm to 30 mm is demonstrated within the tiny 0.12 mm variation of the displacement load. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 2%, and the modulation transfer function reaches 67 line pairs per mm. The solid liquid mixed tunable lens shows the potential for developing a compact, low-aberration, and stable optical system. (C) 2015 Society of PhotoOptical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)
A high birefringence liquid crystal for lenses with large aperture

Abstract:This work presents the application of an experimental nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixture (1929) in a large aperture lens. The LC material is composed of terphenyl and biphenyl derivatives compounds with an isothiocyanate terminal group and fluorinated lateral substituents. The substitution with a strongly polar isothiocyanate group and an aromatic rigid core provides -electron coupling, providing high birefringence ( at 636 nm and 23 °C) and low viscosity ( = 17.03 mPa s). In addition, it also shows high values of birefringence at near infrared (0.318 at 1550 nm). The synthesis process is simple when comparing materials with high melting temperatures. The excellent properties of this LC mixture are demonstrated in a large aperture LC-tunable lens based on a transmission electrode structure. Thanks to the particular characteristics of this mixture, the optical power is high. The high birefringence makes this LC of specific interest for lenses and optical phase modulators and devices, both in the visible and infrared regions.

Abstract:A bionic optical imaging system with an aspheric solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens was designed and fabricated. The entire system mainly consisted of a doublet lens, a solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens, a connecting part, and a CCD imaging device. To mimic the structure of the crystalline lens, the solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens consisted of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) lens, a polymethyl methacrylate lens, and the liquid of ethyl silicone oil. By pumping liquid in or out of the cavity using a microinjector, the curvatures of the front and rear surfaces of the PDMS lens were varied, resulting in a change of focal length. The overall structure of the system was presented, as well as a detailed description of the solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens, material, and fabrication process. Under different injection volumes, the deformation of the PDMS lens was measured and simulated, pictures were captured, and the optical performance was analyzed in simulations and experiments. The focal length of the system ranged from 25.05 to 14.61 mm, and the variation of the diopter was 28.5D, which was larger than that of the human eye. Abstract:A bio-inspired optical imaging system with a polymer membrane and integrated structure is proposed. Similar to the human eye, the presented system has a biomimetic multilayered optical structure and utilizes a solid-liquid mixed tunable lens as the variable-focus unit. The focal length of the imaging system can be adjusted flexibly through the deformation of the tunable lens when it is compressed. A detailed description of the design principle, materials and fabrication process of the system is presented. The deformation property, adjustable range and surface roughness of the tunable lens are measured. Images under different displacement loads are captured, and the relationships among the back focal length (BFL) and effective focal length (EFL) of the system and the change in radius of the tunable lens are analyzed. A 7.6 times variation of the BFL is achieved through a tiny alteration in radius of 1.2 mm. All the measured resolutions during the deformation stage are larger than 40 line pairs mm-1, and the imaging system shows good optical quality and stability. The proposed optical system is of interest for the development of compact and stable imaging systems with a large zooming range.
Flexible fluidic lens with polymer membrane and multi-flow structure

Abstract:This paper proposed a fluidic tunable lens with polymer membrane and multi-flow structure. The designed lens mainly consists of five optical layers including one polymer membrane, two solid layers and two liquid layers. A series of slime hexagonal holes are drilled in the solid layers and the lens holders, allowing the optical liquid flowing among the different layers. The integrated structure of the fluidic lens was presented, as well as the lens composition and fabrication process. The deformation process of the fluidic lens are measured and analyzed, and the optical property are simulated using Zemax software. Images captured through a prototype lens at various rotating angles presents almost identical patterns and the same image quality, showing good stability to gravity. The lens focal length can be adjusted flexibly from 32.3 mm to 14.3 mm under a tiny injection volume of 86.4 uL. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 3% and relative illumination is above 0.72. The fluidic tunable lens shows the potential to be used in various compact, low cost and stable optical systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optofluidic variable-focus microlens formed by a solid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) meniscus channel wall and a tunable liquid lens body. A novel method for in situ fabrication of the meniscus channel wall is developed by introducing liquid PDMS prepolymer into a microchannel followed by curing. Three-light manipulation techniques including tunable optical focusing, collimating, and diverging are realized by varying the refractive index (RI) of liquid lens body. Also, we present an absorption measurement of methylene blue (MB) with a collimated probing light, achieving a detection limit of 0.25 mu M by using a 5-mm-long detection cell. Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate an adaptive liquid lens with a tunable field of view (FOV). The proposed liquid lens consists of an actuator and a lens chamber, the annular sheet is just placed on the liquid-liquid (L-L) interface in order to change the curvature and steer the tilt angle of the interface. Different from the conventional FOV adjustable lens combined with a liquid lens and a liquid prism, the proposed lens requires only one L-L interface to achieve the focal length change and FOV deflection. Moreover, the proposed lens reduces aberrations while maintaining high resolution. The experiments show that the optical power range is -27 m-1 to 30 m-1. It can realize the FOV deflection while tuning the focal length, with an angular resolution of 37"05. The proposed lens can be applied to telescopic system and microscopic system.

Abstract:A bionic variable-focus lens with symmetrical layered structure was designed to mimic the crystalline lens. An optical imaging system based on this lens and with a symmetrical structure that mimics the human eye structure was proposed. The refractive index of the bionic variable-focus lens increases from outside to inside. The two PDMS lenses with a certain thickness were designed to improve the optical performance of the optical imaging system and minimise the gravity effect of liquid. The paper presents the overall structure of the optical imaging system and the detailed description of the bionic variable-focus lens. By pumping liquid in or out of the cavity, the surface curvatures of the rear PDMS lens were varied, resulting in a change in the focal length. The focal length range of the optical imaging system was 20.71–24.87mm. The optical performance of the optical imaging system was evaluated by imaging experiments and analysed by ray tracing simulations. On the basis of test and simulation results, the optical performance of the system was quite satisfactory. Off-axis aberrations were well corrected, and the image quality was greatly improved.

Abstract:A biomimetic system using polymer lenses for the optical design and application is developed. The system mainly consisted of a bionic cornea lens, voice coil motor, compression ring, bionic crystalline lens, substrate, and CCD sensor. By controlling the current of the voice coil motor, we could change the motion of the compression ring to alter the curvature radius of the bionic crystalline lens, thus adjusting the focal length of the whole system. The integrated constructure of the optical system was presented, as well as the detailed description of the lens composition, material, and fabrication process. Images under different displacement loads were captured, the relationship among the curvature radius, observed back focal length, and predicted effective focal length was analyzed, and the spot diagram of the optical system was simulated using ZEMAX software. The focal length of the optical system ranged from 17.3 to 24.5 mm under a tiny displacement load from 0 to 0.14 mm. Besides, the images captured at different rotating angles presented almost identical patterns and the same image quality, which showed good robustness to the gravity. Abstract:A novel doublet liquid variable-focus lens with simple structure was designed and fabricated for spherical aberration correction under the condition of small focal length, which was 11.8 mm to 25 mm. By changing the shape of the two PDMS membranes respectively, the focal length of the proposed lens was changed and the spherical aberration was corrected. The size of the entire lens was very small and overall structure of the proposed lens was presented, as well as the design process. The ZEMAX software was used to optimize the optical parameters of the proposed lens. The deformation of the PDMS membranes was measured and fitted by spherical curve. The longitudinal spherical aberration was measured in experiments and compared with the optimal design results. Abstract:<p>An acoustic lens is an attractive device due to its superior ability to image and focus acoustic beams. Nevertheless, the limitation of such a solid-phase device is apparent in that once an acoustic lens is made, its focal length remains fixed. On the contrary, the liquid acoustic lens can not only flexibly tune the position of focus, but also avoid greater acoustic impedance. This paper presented a liquid acoustic convex lens with a tunable focus. The focal distance of the liquid acoustic lens is derived from the focal length formula of the optical lens group. The interface curvature of the lens and the dependent focus as a function of the infused liquid volume in the lens were studied theoretically and experimentally. Furthermore, the refraction index of the liquid can be accurately selected as needed by adjusting the concentrations of liquid. This also results in a modification of the lens focal length. The magnification ability of this acoustic lens in combination with a single element 6.8 MHz transducer was evaluated by imaging steel probes which were embedded at different position without performing mechanical axial scanning. The error caused by the difference of sound speed between the liquid in the lens and the host medium is corrected.</p>

Abstract:The demand for low-cost, high-performance miniaturized optical imaging systems requires creating a new imaging paradigm. In this paper, we propose an imaging paradigm that achieves diffraction-limited imaging with a non-imaging spatial information transfer lens. The spatial information transfer lens realizes a perfect match between the space-bandwidth product (SBP) of the lens and that of the image sensor so that the collected spatial information from the object can be totally recorded and fully resolved by the image sensor. A backward wave propagation model is developed to reconstruct the object by propagating the light wave modulated by the information transfer lens back from the image space to object space. The proposed imaging paradigm breaks the point-to-point imaging structure and removes the focusing-distance constraint, allowing a flexible arrangement of the object and the image sensor along the optical axis with a compact form factor of the optical system. We experimentally demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of the proposed imaging paradigm. The proposed imaging paradigm is low-cost, simple in configuration, flexible in arrangement, and diffraction limited with great potential applications in biomedical imaging. Abstract:Liquid renovation is perhaps the best method to reduce contamination in immersion lithography, but it brings lens distortion because of the high density and viscosity of the immersion liquids compared to air. In this paper, considering wafer scanning, the three-dimensional computational liquid dynamics model and finite-element model are developed to investigate the lens distortion for immersion liquid renovation. After analyzing the influence of wafer scanning directions, the empirical formulas of the lens distortion for three-dimensional model are established to describe the effect of the parameters of lens and polymer which are used to mount lens and the parameters of immersion liquid flow on lens distortion.

Abstract:Freeform liquid-crystal polarization imaging optics (LPIOs) have vast potential for application in next-generation interactive displays like augmented reality and virtual reality. However, tailoring the phase profile of a freeform LPIO for flexible aberration correction and diffraction efficiency control is still a big challenge due to the difficulties arising from the non-zero etendue of an imaging system and the finite bandwidth of LPIOs. Here, a practical approach to creating freeform LPIOs from design to fabrication is proposed. A freeform polarization exposure is developed to produce a flexible, precise, and ultra-high-resolution photoalignment pattern for a freeform LPIO. A cooperative optimization is performed between the freeform LPIO and the freeform polarization exposure system to find the optimal phase of the freeform LPIO and the optimal surface profiles of the freeform lenses employed in the exposure system to produce freeform wavefronts. The optimal phase of the freeform LPIO is then achieved by superposition interference of the engineered freeform wavefronts via freeform polarization exposure. The effectiveness of the approach and the advantages of freeform LPIOs is experimentally demonstrated. The proposed approach will significantly promote the widespread applications of freeform LPIOs in the field of optics and photonics. A practical approach to creating freeform LPIOs with flexible aberration correction and diffraction efficiency control from design to fabrication is proposed. Abstract:A microfluidic design was created to allow liquid microlens to control focal length and light transmission. The focal length of the microlens was controlled by varying the volume of liquid infused into the liquid cell. The cell extruded a polydimethylsiloxane film and produced a changeable curvature. The imaging ability of the microlens was tuned by taking advantage of the phase transition of poly-N-isopropylacrylamide in the liquid. The phase transition temperature was controlled in the range of 25.6–34.5°C by changing the ion concentration.

Abstract:Overcoming chromatic aberrations is a vital concern in imaging systems in order to facilitate full-color and hyperspectral imaging. By contrast, large dispersion holds opportunities for spectroscopy and tomography. Combining both functions into a single component will significantly enhance its versatility. A strategy is proposed to delicately integrate two lenses with a static resonant phase and a switchable geometric phase separately. The former is a metasurface lens with a linear phase dispersion. The latter is composed of liquid crystals (LCs) with space-variant orientations with a phase profile that is frequency independent. By this means, a broadband achromatic focusing from 0.9 to 1.4 THz is revealed. When a saturated bias is applied on LCs, the geometric phase modulation vanishes, leaving only the resonant phase of the metalens. Correspondingly, the device changes from achromatic to dispersive. Furthermore, a metadeflector with tunable dispersion is demonstrated to verify the universality of the proposed method. Our work may pave a way toward active metaoptics, promoting various imaging applications.

Abstract:Conventional flat diffractive lenses possess compact dimensions and exhibit exceptional optical performance. However, the focal length can hardly be adjusted adaptively. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel diffractive lens that achieves switchable focal length based on microfluidic. A multi-level diffractive lens (MDL) is designed and optimized. By filling liquid materials into the tiny gaps between the MDL, the proposed lens operates in different states with switchable focal length. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed lens enables focal length tuning without mechanical movement, allowing for switching between different focal lengths. The proposed lens is polarization-independent and does not require complex driving mechanisms. The core imaging component has dimensions of only 1.5 mm × 1.5 mm × 0.6 mm. The proposed lens enhances the adjustability of diffractive lenses, showcasing the advantages of liquid materials in diffractive lens design. It holds great potential for applications in compact zoom imaging systems.

Three-dimensional variable-focus liquid lens using acoustic radiation force

Abstract:A liquid lens was fabricated with a focal point that can be varied in the axial and radial directions. We have been developing a variable-focus liquid lens that employs acoustic radiation force and does not contain any mechanical moving parts. Our liquid lens is more compact and has a faster response than conventional mechanical lenses. Rapid scanning of its focus at 1 kHz has been realized by excitation with an amplitude-modulation (AM) signal. The liquid lens consists of a cylindrical acrylic cell (inner diameter: 10 mm; thickness: 3 mm), two immiscible liquids with different refractive indices (water and silicone oil), and an annular piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate transducer with four electrodes. The oil-water interface functions as a lens surface and it can be deformed by the acoustic radiation force generated by the transducer; this enables the lens to act as a variable-focus lens. The variation of the oil-water interface was observed by optical coherence tomography. The laser beam path through the lens was calculated by ray-tracing simulations. The oil-water interface could be deformed and its focal point could be varied in three dimensions by controlling the input voltages of the PZT electrodes. The displacement angle in the radial direction was approximately 3° when two of the electrodes were excited by an input voltage of 45 V at a frequency of 1.9 MHz. The dynamic performance of the lens was investigated using a high-speed cam- era. Excitation by AM signals with a phase difference caused the hemispherical water droplet to oscillate, enabling the focus to be scanned in the axial and radial directions.

Abstract:In this work, a focus-tunable lenticular microlens array (LMA) is demonstrated by coating an electro-responsive fluid - Acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) onto an in-plane switching (IPS) electrode. ATBC is a transparent liquid that is difficult to hydrolyzed, difficult to ionized, and has a wide working temperature range (-50 ∼ 260 ℃). At initial state, the ATBC film is smooth and flat, and the device has no lensing effect at this time. When a DC electric field is applied, the charge injected from the cathode polarizes the electronegative ATBC molecules and moves them toward the anode region, a wavy shape is formed and the device exhibit LMA lensing effect. After removing the voltage, the ATBC fluid rapidly returns to a flat state. When the voltage reaches 60 V, the focal length can reach as low as ∼ 180 μm. The proposed ATBC liquid lens has high transmittance, good thermal stability, compact structure, which has potential applications in imaging, information processing and 2D/3D displays.
