Abstract:Motivated by work of Kucharczyk and Scholze, we use sheafified rational Witt vectors to attach a new ringed space $W_{\mathrm{rat}} (X)$ to every scheme $X$. We also define $R$-valued points $W_{\mathrm{rat}} (X) (R)$ of $W_{\mathrm{rat}} (X)$ for every commutative ring $R$. For normal schemes $X$ of finite type over spec $\mathbb{Z}$, using $W_{\mathrm{rat}} (X) (\mathbb{C})$ we construct infinite dimensional $\mathbb{R}$-dynamical systems whose periodic orbits are related to the closed points of $X$. Various aspects of these topological dynamical systems are studied. We also explain how certain $p$-adic points of $W_{\mathrm{rat}} (X)$ for $X$ the spectrum of a $p$-adic local number ring are related to the points of the Fargues-Fontaine curve. The new intrinsic construction of the dynamical systems generalizes and clarifies the original extrinsic construction in v.1 and v.2. Many further results have been added.

On Dynamical Systems in the Étale Topology

Abstract:We discuss $\mathcal{D}$-modules and dynamical systems in the étale topology. We introduce the differential scheme associated to a morphism $f: X\to S$ of schemes of the same dimension. We introduce differential inertia group $I_{diff}^i$ which act trivially on the special fibers of these schemes. As an application we discuss the problem of counting points on elliptic curves which we show is connected to vanishing cycles of singularities and to closed orbits of dynamical systems.

Abstract:In this note we give an overview of various quantities that are used to measure the complexity of an algebraic dynamical system f:X-->X, including the dynamical degree d(f), which gives a coarse measure of the geometric complexity of the iterates of f, the arithmetic degree a(f,P), which gives a coarse measure of the arithmetic complexity of the orbit of a an algebraic point P in X, and various versions of the canonical height h_f(P) that provide more refined measures of arithmetic complexity. Emphasis is placed on open problems and directions for further exploration.

A dynamical system over a non-archimedean field

Abstract:This is an expository article, originally written in Japanese, on a dynamical system over a non-archimedean field. The main viewpoint is from complex and non-archimedean potential theories. After quickly introducing the Berkovich projective line, the dynamical moduli space as a scheme, and the various height functions on the space of rational functions and on the dynamical moduli space, we first survey our study of Rumely's new equivariants in non-archimedean dynamics and then survey our complex geometric and arithmetic studies of the dynamical moduli space from our joint works with Thomas Gauthier and Gabriel Vigny. The latter include a precise version of McMullen's finiteness theorem on formally exact multiplier spectra and an effective solution of Silverman's conjecture on a comparison between the moduli height and the critical height (qualitatively, the Silverman-Ingram theorem). The final topic is a degeneration of complex dynamics.

Remarks on algebraic dynamics in positive characteristic

Abstract:In this paper, we study arithmetic dynamics in arbitrary characteristic, in particular in positive characteristic. We generalise some basic facts on arithmetic degree and canonical height in positive characteristic. As applications, we prove the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces of positive entropy, the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces and for endomorphisms of projective varieties with large first dynamical degree. We also study ergodic theory for constructible topology. For example, we prove the equidistribution of backward orbits for finite flat endomorphisms with large topological degree. As applications, we give a simple proof for weak dynamical Mordell-Lang and prove a counting result for backward orbits without multiplicities. This gives some applications for equidistributions on Berkovich spaces.

The $p$-adic limits of class numbers in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers

Abstract:This article discusses variants of Weber's class number problem in the spirit of arithmetic topology to connect the results of Sinnott--Kisilevsky and Kionke. Let $p$ be a prime number. We first prove the $p$-adic convergence of class numbers in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a global field and a similar result in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-cover of a compact 3-manifold. Secondly, we establish an explicit formula for the $p$-adic limit of the $p$-power-th cyclic resultants of a polynomial using roots of unity of orders prime to $p$, the $p$-adic logarithm, and the Iwasawa invariants. Finally, we give thorough investigations of torus knots, twist knots, and elliptic curves; we complete the list of the cases with $p$-adic limits being in $\mathbb{Z}$ and find the cases such that the base $p$-class numbers are small and $\nu$'s are arbitrarily large.

Abstract:A simply laced Dynkin diagram gives rise to a family of curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ and a coregular representation, using deformations of simple singularities and Vinberg theory respectively. Thorne has conjectured and partially proven a strong link between the arithmetic of these curves and the rational orbits of these representations. In this paper, we complete Thorne's picture and show that $2$-Selmer elements of the Jacobians of the smooth curves in each family can be parametrised by integral orbits of the corresponding representation. Using geometry-of-numbers techniques, we deduce statistical results on the arithmetic of these curves. We prove these results in a uniform manner. This recovers and generalises results of Bhargava, Gross, Ho, Shankar, Shankar and Wang. The main innovations are: an analysis of torsors on affine spaces using results of Colliot-Thélène and the Grothendieck--Serre conjecture, a study of geometric properties of compactified Jacobians using the Bialynicki-Birula decomposition, and a general construction of integral orbit representatives.

Abstract:We give a dynamical construction of an infinite sequence of distinct totally $p$-adic algebraic numbers whose Weil heights tend to the limit $\frac{\log p}{p-1}$, thus giving a new proof of a result of Bombieri-Zannier. The proof is essentially equivalent to the explicit calculation of the Arakelov-Zhang pairing of the maps $\sigma(x)=x^2$ and $\phi_p(x)=\frac{1}{p}(x^p-x)$.

Abstract:In this article, we generalize the arithmetic degree and its related theory to dynamical systems defined over an arbitrary field $\mathbf{k}$ of characteristic $0$. We first consider a dynamical system $(X,f)$ over a finitely generated field $K$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, we introduce the arithmetic degrees $\alpha(f,\cdot)$ for $\overline{K}$-points by using Moriwaki heights. We study the arithmetic dynamical degree of $(X,f)$ and establish the relative degree formula. The relative degree formula gives a proof of the fundamental inequality, that is, the upper arithmetic degree $\overline{\alpha}(f,x)$ is less than or equal to the first dynamical degree $\lambda_1(f)$ in this setting. By taking spread-outs, we extend the definition of arithmetic degrees to dynamical systems over the field $\mathbf k$. We demonstrate that our definition is independent of the choice of the spread-out. Moreover, in this setting, we prove certain special cases of the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture. A main novelty of this paper is that, we give a characterization of arithmetic degrees of "transcendental points" in the case $\mathbf{k}=\mathbb{C}$, from which we deduce that $\alpha(f,x)=\lambda_1(f)$ for very general $x\in X(\mathbb{C})$ when $f$ is an endomorphism.

Abstract:We survey Vojta's higher-dimensional generalizations of the $abc$ conjecture and Szpiro's conjecture as well as recent developments that apply them to various problems in arithmetic dynamics. In particular, the "$abcd$ conjecture" implies a dynamical analogue of a conjecture on the uniform boundedness of torsion points and a dynamical analogue of Lang's conjecture on lower bounds for canonical heights.

Counting integral points on symmetric varieties with applications to arithmetic statistics

Abstract:In this article, we combine Bhargava's geometry-of-numbers methods with the dynamical point-counting methods of Eskin--McMullen and Benoist--Oh to develop a new technique for counting integral points on symmetric varieties lying within fundamental domains for coregular representations. As applications, we study the distribution of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group in thin families of cubic number fields, as well as the distribution of the $2$-Selmer groups in thin families of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. For example, our results suggest that the existence of a generator of the ring of integers with small norm has an increasing effect on the average size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group, relative to the Cohen--Lenstra predictions.

Dynamics of endomorphisms of algebraic groups

Abstract:Let $\sigma$ denote an endomorphism of a smooth algebraic group $G$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field, and assume all iterates of $\sigma$ have finitely many fixed points. Steinberg gave a formula for the number of fixed points of $\sigma$ (and hence of all of its iterates $\sigma^n$) in the semisimple case, leading to a representation of its Artin-Mazur zeta function as a rational function. We generalise this to an arbitrary (smooth) algebraic group $G$, where the number of fixed points $\sigma_n$ of $\sigma^n$ can depend on $p$-adic properties of $n$. We axiomatise the structure of the sequence $(\sigma_n)$ via the concept of a `finite-adelically distorted' (FAD-)sequence. Such sequences also occur in topological dynamics, and our subsequent results about zeta functions and asymptotic counting of orbits apply equally well in that situation; for example, to $S$-integer dynamical systems, additive cellular automata and other compact abelian groups. We prove dichotomies for the associated Artin-Mazur zeta function, and study the analogue of the Prime Number Theorem for the function counting periodic orbits of length $\leq N$. For an algebraic group $G$ we express the error term via the $\ell$-adic cohomological zeta function of $G$.

Abstract:In this note we study numerically the combinatorics of curves and geodesics on the torus with one boundary component. A potential computational difficulty is avoided by counting inside specific orbits of the mapping class group up to a certain length, either geometric or combinatorial. Some cases are rigurolosly determined and the Euler totient function emerges. More complicated orbits are computed to suggest an array of formulae continuing to involve the Euler totient function. We formulate six precise conjectures. These include a novel study of an "inverse" function of the Mirzakhani's asymptotics. The geometric part of our study was motivated by the rationality aspect of these asymptotics.
