Abstract:The sensing properties of a boron dipyrromethene derivative 1 containing a N,N-(dimethylamino)styryl group at its α-position and an aniline moiety at meso-position were investigated by steady-state UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, which were found to exhibit wavelength ratiometric and large fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Al3+ with specific selectivity over other metal ions in aqueous media. Furthermore, confocal fluorescence microscopy experiments demonstrated that 1 could be used as a fluorescent probe for Al3+ in living cells.

Abstract:A selective fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor for the detection of Al3+ and CN− was constructed from diarylethene with a salicylidene Schiff base. When triggered by Al3+, the diarylethene exhibited a remarkable fluorescence color change from dark to bright green. The interaction between its open-ring and closed-ring isomer with CN− caused a notable change in its absorption spectrum with significant color change from colorless to yellow and pink to darkcyan, respectively. Additionally, its light and metal-responsive fluorescence behaviors could be applied to logic gate with the fluorescence intensity as output and combinational stimuli of light and chemical species as inputs.

Abstract:A new efficient Schiff base sensor SB3 for fluorescent and colorimetric "naked-eye" "turn-on" sensing of cyanide anion (CN-) with excellent sensitivity and selectivity was developed. The 4,4'-(perfluoropropane-2,2-diyl)bisphenol group and two phenyl groups were covalently linked by two C = N bonds to extend the conjugation length. The four hydroxyl groups can improve the water solubility of the SB3 sensor. The SB3 sensor exhibited high specificity towards CN- by interrupting its intramolecular charge transfer, resulting in a color change and remarkable "turn-on" green fluorescence emission. The sensing mechanism is caused by the nucleophilic addition of CN- toward imine groups of the SB3 sensor, leading to breaks of the conjugation, fluorescent spectral changes, and color change. It was confirmed by 1H NMR titration and Mass spectra. The detection limits for CN- and Al3+obtained by fluorescence spectrum are 0.80 µM and 0.25 µM, respectively. The SB3 sensor can act as an efficient chemical sensor for detecting the CN- and Al3+ ions under common environmental and physiological conditions (pH 5-12). Besides, the sensor can also detect CN- in food materials (such as sprouting potatoes and cassava flour) and imaging CN-in living cells with strong "turn-on" fluorescence at 490 nm. SB3 is an excellent CN- sensor that exhibits some advantages, including easy synthesis, distinct fluorescence and color change, high selectivity, low detection limit, and good anti-interference ability to analyze solution and food samples, together with fluorescence cell imaging.

Abstract:Benzothiazole refers to a type of heteroaromatic compound constituted by electron rich nitrogen and sulphur atoms from molecular level, and presents powerful fluorescence in solutions, resulting its widely application in fluorescent whitening agents, fluorescent dyes and functional coordination. In this paper, we focused on designing and synthesizing a benzothiazole-functionalized naphthalimide fluorescent probe NIB for sequentially detecting CN− and Al3+ in DMSO/H2O (1:9, v/v) solution using these fluorescence properties of benzothiazole. When the fluorescent probe NIB interacts with CN−, the fluorescence of the probe is quenched, indicating that NIB can specifically respond to CN−. According to the anti-interference experiment, NIB possesses strong anti-interference ability toward CN−, and its detection limit of CN− is 6.31 × 10−7 M. Interestingly, the fluorescence of the NIB-CN − system was turned back on again by adding Al3+ ions which has good anti-interference performance against other cations. The lowest detection limit of NIB-CN − system for Al3+ is 2.85 × 10−6 M. After 10 cycles, NIB still has good sequential detection performance for CN− and Al3+, which can serve as a highly sensitive logic gate for the detection of CN− and Al3+, and the “On-Off-On” switches of this fluorescence can be observed under UV light megascopically. The mechanism of sequential detection of CN− and Al3+ was further discussed by experimental and theoretical methods. The detection mechanism is not the traditional coordination competition mechanism, but the sequential addition of CN− and Al3+ changes the aggregation mode of probe molecules in the system. In addition, the potential application of this probe was fully confirmed by the preparation of probe NIB test paper and the realization of sequential detection of CN− and Al3+ in living cells (HeLa).

A Novel Naphthylidene-diimine Chemosensor for Selective Colorimetric and Fluorometric Detection of Al3+ and CN- Ions

Abstract:A naphthylidene-diimine L2 was newly designed, and its structure was identified by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods. The effect of temperature, acid-base and light on enol-keto tautomerism in this Schiff base was evaluated by colorimetry, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Under irradiation 365 nm, L2 emitted yellow, orange and strong green emission in pure, basic and aqueous DMSO media (v/v, 1/1), respectively. Its ionochromic behavior against various cations (Fe3+, Al3+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Ba2+ and Ag+) and anions (F-, Cl-, CH3COO-, SO32-, S2O32-, HSO4-, H2PO4-, NO3-, CN-, and OH-) was investigated in aqueous DMSO media (v/v, 1/1) by UV-Vis and fluorescence experiments. Dark yellow color of L2 changed to colorless for Fe3+, Cr3+ and HSO4- ions, and turned to light yellow for Al3+ and Cu2+ ions, and to orange for CN- and OH- ions. According to UV-Vis data, the chemosensor displayed selective recognition towards Fe3+, Al3+, Cu2+, HSO4-, CN- and OH- with a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. At the excitation wavelength of 365 nm, L2 gave strong yellowish white emission (λem = 445 and 539 nm) in the presence of Al3+, and the intensity increased about 12.5 times. On the other hand, the chemosensor displayed one emission band at 452 nm and 450 nm in the presence of CN- and OH- with 1.9 fold and 2.3 fold fluorescence enhancement, respectively.

Abstract:We have designed and synthesized a novel simple colorimetric fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Probe 5-(4-(diphenylamine)phenyl) thiophen-2-formaldehyde W exhibited a turn-on fluorescent response to cyanide ion (CN − ), which induces distinct visual color changes. Probe W exhibited a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence response for the detection of CN − over a wide pH range (4–11) and in the presence of common interferents. The linear detection of CN − over the concentration range of 4.00–38.00 μM ( R 2 = 0.9916, RSD = 0.02) was monitored by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry (UV-Vis) with the limit of detection determined to be 0.48 μM. The linear detection of CN − over the concentration range of 8.00–38.00 μM was examined by fluorescence spectrophotometry ( R 2 = 0.99086, RSD = 0.031), and the detection limit was found to be 68.00 nM. The sensing mechanisms were confirmed by 1 H NMR spectroscopic titrations, X-ray crystallographic analysis, and HRMS. Importantly, probe W was found to show rapid response, high selectivity, and sensitivity for cyanide anions in real water samples, over the range of 100.17∼100.86% in artificial lake water and 100.54∼101.64% in running water by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry, and over the range of 99.42∼100.71% in artificial lake water and 100.59∼101.17% in running water by fluorescence spectrophotometry. Importantly, this work provides a simple and effective approach which uses an economically cheap and uncomplicated synthetic route for the selective, sensitive, and quantitative detection of CN − ions in systems relevant to the environment and health.

Abstract:In this study, 3-ethyl-2-methylbenzothiazolium iodide and nitrophenyl-2-furancarboxaldehyde were used to synthesize a new fluorescent and chromogenic dual channel signal cyanide ion probe M, which showed high selectivity towards CN analysis and strong antijamming capability towards other anions. When CN is present in the solution, probe M indicates an obvious blue shift in UV-vis absorbance spectra, which can be observed clearly by unaided eyes. The limits of detection (LODs) of CN based on fluorescence and UV-vis absorbance were 0.11 mu M and 0.16 mu M, respectively. The mechanism of fluorescent and chromogenic cyanide ion detection refers to the nucleophilic addition of cyanide ion to carbon atom of-C-N-in the benzothiazole. The a-conjugation and ICT transition between furfural and benzothiazole were broken due to this non-reversible reaction, resulting in the color change and fluorescent characterizations. In addition, probe M also showed the excellent optical properties and high biocompatibility, which enables the practical application of CN- tracing in biomedical systems.

Abstract:A highly sensitive bifunctional probe (1) for Al3+ and Cu2+ by the reaction of 2-hydroxyl-1-naphthalene formaldehyde with indole-3-formyl hydrazine was synthesized. In THF-H2O (v/v = 3:7) solution, 1 only shows fluorescence enhanced recognition for Al3+ in 17 common metal ions, which shows that 1 can be used as a highly selective fluorescence enhancement probe for Al3+. When the concentration of Al3+ is 20.0 µM (1.0 equivalent), the fluorescence intensity of 1 is increased by 195 times, and the detection limit of 1 for Al3+ is calculated to be 3.8 nM, which shows that 1 is fluorescence probe for Al3+ with an ultra-high sensitivity. Trace Al3+ (For example, the WHO drinking water quality standard 7.4 μM) can be clearly observed by the fluorescence test paper covering 1 through the change of fluorescence color. In addition, the vivo-detection ability of 1 is verified by detected the Al3+ in living GS cells of epinephelus coioides. Furthermore, 1 can also be used as a high selective and sensitive colorimetric probe for Cu2+. In THF-H2O (v/v = 3:7) buffer solution (pH = 7.0), the addition of Cu2+ results in a 69 nm red shift in the UV–visible absorption spectrum of 1 solution, causing the color of 1 solution to change from colorless to yellow. In addition, 1 shows a low detection limit of 39.3 nM, a fast response time, excellent recyclability and anti-interference for Cu2+. Therefore, 1 can be used for fluorescence detection of Cu2+ in environmental water systems.

Abstract:In this study, a turn-on coumarin-based fluorescent probe, 7-hydroxy-6-[(2-hydroxy-naphthalen-1-ylmethylene)-amino]-4-methyl-chroman-2-one (CN), was developed for detecting Al3+ in aqueous systems. The binding ratio of CN-Al3+ complexes was determined from the Job plot and ESI-MS data to be 1 : 1. The binding constant (K-a) of Al3+ binding to CN was calculated to be 9.55 x 10(4) M-1 from a Benesi-Hildebrand plot and the detection limit was evaluated to be as low as 0.10 mu M (LOD = 3 sigma/slope). CN could be used as an effective fluorescent probe for detecting Al3+ in living HeLa cells. Moreover, CN could also be applied in the in vivo detection of Al3+ in zebrafish.

Abstract:A simple and efficient fluorescent chemosensor for Al(3+) is reported in the paper. The chemosensor is obtained by dehydration reaction of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and 2-aminophenol. The chemosensor has high selectivity and sensitivity for Al(3+) and displays fluorescence "off-on" switch signal. The detection limit of the chemosensor for Al(3+) can reach 1.0×10(-7) M in DMSO/H2O (1:9, v/v) solution. The mass spectra and Job's plot analysis confirm the 1:1 stoichiometry between chemosensor and Al(3+). Potential utilization of the probe as an intracellular sensor of Al(3+) in human cancer (HiSa) cells is also examined by confocal fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract:A novel "turn-on" fluorescent probe (PCN) was designed, synthesized, and characterized with perylene tetracarboxylic disimide as the fluorophore and Schiff base subunit as the metal ion receptor. The probe demonstrated a considerable fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Al3+ in DMF with high selectivity and sensitivity. Furthermore, the considerably "off–on" fluorescence response simultaneously led to the apparent color change from colorless to brilliant yellow, which could also be identified by naked eye easily. The sensing capability of PCN to Al3+ was evaluated by the changes in ultraviolet–visible, fluorescence, Fourier transform–infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-resolution mass spectrometry spectroscopies. The linear concentration range for Al3+ was 0–63 μM with a detection limit of 0.16 μM, which allowed for the quantitative determination of Al3+.

Abstract:A novel ‘D-π-A’ sensor 1 has been designed and prepared via the condensation reaction of 3‑ethyl‑2‑methyl‑1,3‑benzothiazol‑3‑ium iodide and 5‑nitro‑o‑vanillin. Upon treatment with cyanide, sensor 1 exhibited a significant near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence quenching at 663nm. The MS, IR, 1H NMR and DFT methods confirmed that the response of 1 to cyanide is due to the nucleophilic addition reaction, which results in the inhibition of the Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) process in the sensor. Furthermore, sensor 1 was used for the determination of CN− in HeLa cells.

Abstract:It's important to pay great attention to the detection of CN − due to its high toxicity. Based on ESIPT characteristics, we design, synthesize and characterize the colorimetric and fluorescence "turn-on" probe AHAM to recognize CN − , which has the large Stokes shift (228 nm), exhibits high sensitivity and excellent selectivity. The limit detection of the probe AHAM for CN − was 1.94 × 10 −8 M, which was much lower than the standard set by WHO and many previously reported probes. The recognition mechanism between AHAM and CN − was investigated by spectroscopic analysis, 1 H NMR titration and mass spectrometry. To our surprise, AHAM could not only identify CN − reversibly, but also recognize CN − accurately in test paper and silica gel plate applications. Furthermore, AHAM was successfully used for fluorescence imaging in C. elegans and mice. It provides the new easy, fast and accurate method to detect CN − .

Abstract:A sensitive fluorescent chemosensor based on bis-Schiff base N,N′-(1,4-phenylenedimethylidyne) bis-1,4-benzenediamine (PMBA) was developed for detection of Al3+ in aqueous solutions. A naked eye color variation from yellow to colorless is observed along with a remarkable fluorescence enhancement. A good linearity between the fluorescence intensity of the coordinate complex Al3+-PMBA and the concentration of Al3+ (0–30μM/L), with a detection limit of 2×10−6M was established.

Abstract:Novel chemosensors, including coumarin hydrazide, were designed and synthesized by a three-step synthesis sequence starting from 7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbohydrazide. General spectroscopic methods (FT-IR, 1H/13C NMR, and HRMS) were used to characterize all produced chemosensors. These chemosensors demonstrate the ability to detect cyanide (CN–) anion by shifting absorption and fluorescence turn-off response in DMSO. The reaction mechanism between the synthesized chemosensors and the CN– anion involves deprotonation and addition processes; as determined by dipole-dipole interactions, reversibility, 1H NMR experiments, and theoretical studies. With limit of detection (LOD) values of 0.25 μM and 0.15 μM for 3a and 3b, respectively, these chemosensors exhibit exceptional detection ability and demonstrate the high effectiveness of their use for CN– anion determination.

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor 1 was developed for the detection of Al(3+) in aqueous solution based on aggregation-induced emmision (AIE). The chemosensor showed the fluorescence of its aggregated state and Al(3+)-chelated soluble state in the absence and in the presence of Al(3+), respectively, and resulted in a fluorescence ratio (I461/I537) response to Al(3+) in neutral aqueous solution at a detection limit as low as 0.29 μmol L(-1). The method was also highly selective to Al(3+) over other physiological relevant metal ions investigated in this study. Taking advantage of its AIE characteristics, the chemosensor was successfully applied on test papers for simple and rapid detection of Al(3+). Moreover, the application of 1 for the imaging of Al(3+) in living cells by ratiometric fluorescence changes was also achieved.

Abstract:A coumarin-based Schiff base fluorescence probe 1 , which could specifically recognize Al 3+ with high anti-interference was developed. After the addition of Al 3+ , the reaction reaches the platform in about 30 min with a fluorescent detection limit 0.12 μM. The coordination reaction between the carbonyl group, hydroxyl group, –NC- of probe 1 and Al 3+ limits the molecular twist and fluorescence quenching effect from photoinduced electron transfer and then induces the increase of red fluorescence. The detection for Al 3+ by the probe shows good repeatability in alternating Al 3+ and EDTA. The probe was also applied to the successful monitoring Al 3+ in living cells and real water sample.

Abstract:A novel naphthalimide-appended salamo-type fluorescence sensor (E)-2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde O-(2-((((E)-1-(3-(1,3-dioxo-1H-benzo[de]isoquinolin-2(3H)-yl)-2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene)amino)oxy)ethyl) oxime (H2L) for continuous identification of copper(II) and cyanide ions was constructed. The sensor H2L exhibited relatively high selectivity for Cu2+ in a 1:1 stoichiometric manner, and the increase of Cu2+ led to quenching of blue fluorescence, with a minimum detection limit of 9.37 × 10−9 M. In addition, the complex generated by the sensor H2L with Cu2+ could in situ recognize CN−, the L-Cu2+ complex coordinates with CN− in a 1:1 stoichiometric manner and exhibits high selectivity, and the addition of CN− results in enhanced blue fluorescence. The time response and pH effect tests demonstrated the advantages of H2L such as fast response for the continuum recognition of Cu2+ with CN− and wide pH test range. Based on the above results, an attempt was made to determine Cu2+ with CN− in spiked environmental water samples with good recoveries.

Abstract:A new fluorescent sensor for the detection of CN− was developed based on the conjugation of phenothiazine fluorophore and benzofuran unit. By the nucleophilic attacking of CN− to the fluoroacetylamino group in the sensor, the additional reaction of CN− and carbonyl group induced the ICT (intramolecular charge transfer) effect in the molecule and caused the fluorescence quenching sensor. The titration experiments show that the sensor has good sensitivity, selectivity and quick response for CN−. In addition, the fluorescent detection of CN− in the living cell and zebrafish experiments demonstrated the value of the sensor in tracing the CN− in biological systems.
