Abstract:The self-assembly of cyclodipeptides composed of natural aromatic amino acids into supramolecular structures of diverse morphologies with intrinsic emissions in the visible light region is demonstrated. The assembly process can be halted at the initial oligomerization by coordination with zinc ions, with the most prominent effect observed for cyclo-dihistidine (cyclo-HH). This process is mediated by attracting and pulling of the metal ions from the solvent into the peptide environment, rather than by direct interaction in the solvent as commonly accepted, thus forming an "environment-switching" doping mechanism. The doping induces a change of cyclo-HH molecular configurations and leads to the formation of pseudo "core/shell" clusters, comprising peptides and zinc ions organized in ordered conformations partially surrounded by relatively amorphous layers, thus significantly enhancing the emissions and allowing the application of the assemblies for ecofriendly color-converted light emitting diodes. These findings shed light into the very initial coordination procedure and elucidate an alternative mechanism of metal ions doping on biomolecules, thus presenting a promising avenue for integration of the bioorganic world and the optoelectronic field.

Abstract:As increasing demands of smart fluorescent materials, developing new systems with controllable emissions is more essential. Here we report a pillar[6]arene and tetraphenylethene (TPE)-based supra-amphiphile, which shows dual-responsiveness and tunable emission intensity. By introducing azobenzene units to a TPE fluorophore, the fluorescence is quenched via photo-induced electron transfer, whereas the emission regains upon the complexation with pillar[6]arene. Benefited from the light and reduction responsiveness of azobenzene, the fluorescent intensity of the supra-amphiphile can be easily controlled. The self-assembly morphologies including nanoparticles and nanoribbons are also found upon external stimuli. This work shows a new method to construct smart fluorescent materials.

Abstract:A photo‐switched supramolecular luminescent assembly is constructed, showing both aggregation‐induced emission and photo/chemical dual responsive properties. Such orthogonal stimulations allow for photo‐induced fluorescence on/off and locking/unlocking information by base/acid treatment, with apparent fluorescent self‐feedback. This study realizes the rarely reported but very important locking/unlocking information of photo‐controlled fluorescence and self‐feedback functions, providing a promising step for multifunctional intelligent supramolecular luminescent devices. The development of multifunctional photo‐controlled luminescent switch, which provides versatile tools for smart systems and advanced organic luminescent materials, is of paramount significance. Herein, a photoswitchable supramolecular assembly is constructed from the noncovalent interaction of cyanostilbene‐bridged bis(dibenzo‐24‐crown‐8) with a diarylethene derivative. Possessing the reversible photoisomerization property and a high Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency, the resultant supramolecular assembly can reversibly switch on/off the luminescence of the cyanostilbene group upon irradiation by different wavelength light and the addition of acid/base both in solution and in the solid state. Significantly, the characters written with the supramolecular assembly as ink can be reversibly and repeatedly erased and recovered by altering the wavelength of irradiation light.

Abstract:Lanthanide supramolecular assemblies as photoswitches have attracted much attention in the fields of cellular imaging and light-emitting materials. However, the regulation of lanthanide luminescence behavior by redox of metal ions is rare. Herein, we constructed a lanthanide luminescence supramolecular switch, that is, a binary assembly constructed by mono-(6-ethylenediamine-6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin (ECD) and ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate ((NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O, Mo7), and further assembled into ternary assemblies with polyoxometalate Na9[XW10O36]·32H2O (X-POM, X = Eu and Dy), which was comprehensively characterized by UV-vis, fluorescence, NMR, Fourier transform infrared, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, and ζ potential. Thanks to the oxygen-shielding effect of secondary supramolecular assembly, the photoreduction process of Mo7 (VI) could occur rapidly and efficiently. Due to the high Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency of X-POM and Mo7 (V) in supramolecular assembly, the photoreduction process is accompanied by fluorescence quenching. In addition, the oxidation process of the Mo7 (V) could be rapidly promoted by heating, which allowed the X-POM fluorescence to recover. Interestingly, ECD-mediated ternary supramolecular assemblies not only tune the lanthanide luminescence but also strongly increase the lanthanide luminescence behavior, leading to the emission of strong narrow red light at 5D0-7F4, which can be successfully applied to two-dimensional code anticounterfeiting. In this study, a new approach is provided for the construction of lanthanide luminescence supramolecular switches tuned by photoreactive polyoxometalate.

Abstract:Abstract Regulating the fluorescent properties of organic small molecules in a controlled and dynamic manner has been a fundamental research goal. Although several strategies have been exploited, realizing multi-color molecular emission from a single fluorophore remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate an emissive system by combining pyrene fluorophore and acylhydrazone units, which can generate multi-color switchable fluorescent emissions at different assembled states. Two kinds of supramolecular tools, amphiphilic self-assembly and γ-cyclodextrin mediated host-guest recognition, are used to manipulate the intermolecular aromatic stacking distances, resulting in the tunable fluorescent emission ranging from blue to yellow, including a pure white-light emission. Moreover, an external chemical signal, amylase, is introduced to control the assembly states of the system on a time scale, generating a distinct dynamic emission system. The dynamic properties of this multi-color fluorescent system can be also enabled in a hydrogel network, exhibiting a promising potential for intelligent fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Constructing ultralong organic phosphorescent materials possessing a high quantum yield is challenging. Herein, assemblies of purely organic supramolecular pins composed of alkyl-bridged phenylpyridinium salts and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) are reported. Different from "one host with two guests" and "head-to-tail" binding, the binding formation of supramolecular pins is "one host with one guest" and "head-to-head," which overcomes electrostatic repulsion and promotes intramolecular charge transfer. The supramolecular pin 1/CB[8] displays afterglow with high phosphorescence quantum yield (99.38%) after incorporation into a rigid matrix, which is the highest yield reported to date for phosphorescent materials. Moreover, multicolor photoluminescence can be obtained by different excitation wavelengths and ratios of host to guest. Owing to the redshift of the absorption, the supramolecular pins are applied for targeted phosphorescence imaging of mitochondria. This work will provide a reasonable supramolecular strategy to achieve redshifted and efficient phosphorescence both in the solid state and in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Beyond the AIE (aggregation-induced emission) phenomenon in small molecules, supramolecules with AIE properties have evolved in the AIE family and accelerated the growth of supramolecular application diversity. Inspired by its mechanism, particularly the RIV (restriction of intramolecular vibrations) process, a feasible strategy of constructing an AIE-supramolecular cage based on the oxidation of sulfur atoms and coordination of metals is presented. In contrast to previous strategies that used molecular stacking to limit molecular vibrations, we achieved the desired goal using the synergistic effects of coordination-driven self-assembly and oxidation. Upon assembling with zinc ions, S1 was endowed with a distinct AIE property compared with its ligand L1, while S2 exhibited a remarkable fluorescence enhancement compared to L2. Also, the single cage-sized nanowire structure of supramolecules was obtained via directional electrostatic interactions with multiple anions and rigid-shaped cationic cages. Moreover, the adducts of zinc porphyrin and supramolecules were investigated and characterized by 2D DOSY, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The protocol described here enriches the ongoing research on tunable fluorescence materials and paves the way towards constructing stimuli-responsive luminescent supramolecular cages.

Abstract:In photoswitches that undergo fluorescence switching upon ultraviolet irradiation, photoluminescence and photoisomerization often occur simultaneously, leading to unstable fluorescence properties. Here, we successfully demonstrated reversible solid-state triple fluorescence switching through "Pump-Trigger" multiphoton manipulation. A novel fluorescence photoswitch, BOSA-SP, achieved green, yellow, and red fluorescence under excitation by pump light and isomerization induced by trigger light. The energy ranges of photoexcitation and photoisomerization did not overlap, enabling appropriate selection of the multiphoton light for "pump" and "trigger" photoswitching, respectively. Additionally, the large free volume of the spiropyran (SP) moiety in the solid state promoted reversible photoisomerization. Switching between "pump" and "trigger" light is useful for three-color tunable switching cell imaging, which can be exploited in programmable fluorescence switching. Furthermore, we exploited reversible dual-fluorescence switching in a single molecular system to successfully achieve two-color super-resolution imaging.

Abstract:Although purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has drawn widespread attention in recent years, regulatable phosphorescence resonance energy transfer (PRET) supramolecular switch is still rare. Herein, single molecular dual-fold supramolecular light switches, which are constructed by phenylpyridinium salts modified diarylethene derivatives (DTE-Cn, n = 3, 5) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) are reported. Significantly, biaxial [3]pseudorotaxane displayed efficiently reversible RTP after binding with CB[8] and the phosphorescence quenching efficiency is calculated up to be 99%. Furthermore, the binary supramolecular assembly can coassemble with Cy5 to form ternary supramolecular assembly showing efficiently PRET, which is successfully applied in switchable near infrared (NIR) mitochondria-targeted cell imaging and photocontrolled data encryption. This supramolecular strategy involving energy transfer provides a convenient approach for phosphorescent application in biology and material fields.

Abstract:The aromatic chromophores, for example, perylene diimides (PDIs) are well known for their desirable absorption and emission properties. However, their stacking nature hinders the exploitation of these properties and further applications. To fabricate emissive aggregates or solid-state materials, it has been common practice to decrease the degree of stacking of PDIs by incorporating substituents into the parent aromatic ring. However, such practice often involves difficultorganic synthesis with multiple steps. A supramolecular approach is established here to fabricate highly fluorescent and responsive soft materials, which has greatly decreases the number of required synthetic steps and also allows for a system with switchable photophysical properties. The highly fluorescent smart material exhibits great adaptivity and can be used as a supramolecular sensor for the rapid detection of spermine with high sensitivity and selectivity, which is crucial for the early diagnosis of malignant tumors.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive supramolecular materials have attracted much attention because of their controllable microstructure and luminescence behavior. In this study, the fluorescent molecule ((1E)-1-((4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)benzylidene)hydrazineylide-ne)ethyl)ferrocene (FcMe-TPE) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property and redox activity was synthesized. The morphology as well as fluorescence behavior could be modulated by changing solvent, adding oxidant or applying voltage, and the translation mechanism was explored in detail by means of density functional theory (DFT). Based on the presence of competitive hydrogen bonding, FcMe-TPE assemblies showed different aggregate behaviors and properties under different water contents (f w ). As f w increased from 20% to 60%, the morphology of assemblies could be transformed from 2D sheet to elliptical crystal structure, then the precipitation gradually disappeared for the further increase of f w . At the same time, the addition of oxidant as well as the application of voltage could also cause changes in the fluorescence intensity of the assemblies. When the voltage increased from 0 V to 3 V, the fluorescence intensity increased and reached the maximum value at 1 V. Based on this property, the electrofluorochromic (EFC) device with low trigger voltage was made. This work provides a feasible strategy for controllable self-assembly and the fabrication of multiple fluorescence switches, which has potential practical application in the field of advanced anti-counterfeiting, intelligent display and information encryption.

Abstract:Photochromic fluorescent switches, whose emission can be reversibly switched upon light irradiation, have emerged as extremely promising materials in the last decade owing to their potential applications in biological and materials sciences. Diarylethylenes are a promising class of photochromic molecules with excellent phototriggering properties. Although some diarylethenes themselves can be used as fluorescent switches, a more efficient way to prepare photochromic fluorescent switches is to combine diarylethene with an energy-level matched fluorophore via non-covalent assembly, which not only fully utilizes the diversity of fluorophores and diarylethenes, but also easily enables the integration of multiple functions. Moreover, non-covalent assembly methods often bring many unintended results, favorable for the design and fabrication of the new generation of smart materials. Here, the construction of diarylethene-based photochromic fluorescent switches by non-covalent assembly is reviewed. The structure design principle of diarylethenes and fluorophores, the cross-talk between different components and the integration of stimuli-response features in the photochromic fluorescence switching systems are discussed. Non-covalent assembly modes and photochromic fluorescence switching mechanisms that have great guiding significance for the design of photochromic fluorescent switches are also summarized.

Abstract:Solid-state small-molecule fluorescent photoswitches are characterised by their unique luminescence properties in solid form, making them highly suitable for practical applications involving surfaces and interfaces. However, a common challenge is that most such photoswitches with thiophene units exhibit subdued fluorescence due to the heavy atom effect of sulfur. To overcome this, we present a molecular design strategy that significantly enhances the solid-state fluorescence efficiency of these photoswitches. Our approach involves the substitution of thiophene units with thiophene dioxide, thereby mitigating the heavy atom effect. We have synthesized four tetraphenylethene-based molecules containing thiophene units to demonstrate the effectiveness of this strategy. Comparative analysis of their photochromic and fluorescence switching performances revealed that those containing thiophene dioxide units outperformed others in terms of photochromic properties and solid-state luminescence efficiency. Theoretical analysis suggests that this enhancement is due to the minimal involvement of the sulfur atom in the S 0 to S 1 transition in the photoswitchable molecule containing a thiophene dioxide unit, making its fluorescence properties largely unaffected by the heavy atom effect of sulfur. Furthermore, we found that the incorporation of 2,5-dimethylthiophene units improved the anti-fatigue performance, probably because the methyl groups hinder the oxidative dehydrogenation side reactions in the closed-ring isomer. The addition of a 2,5-dimethylthiophene dioxide unit not only improved the photochromic and fluorescence emission efficiency, but also significantly improved the anti-fatigue performance. As a result, these photoswitchable molecules exhibit outstanding dual-mode photoswitching capabilities and sustainable recyclability, positioning them as excellent photosensitive materials for photoprinting of digital, textual and patterned content.

Abstract:In this work, we report a simple strategy by mixing a coumarin appended tetraphenylethylene derivative (TPEC) and gamma-cydodextrin(gamma-CD) in aqueous solution, based on the host-guest interaction between TPEC and gamma-CD to construct a dual-modality supramolecular hyperbranched polymer. The host-guest interaction between gamma-CD and TPEC efficiently restricted the intramolecular rotation and the non-radiative relaxation channel, minimizing energy loss, thereby resulting in the strong emission of TPEC in dilute solution. Moreover, we achieved the conversion between non-covalent supramolecular hyperbranched polymers and its corresponding covalent supramolecular hyperbranched polymers under the irradiation of UV light, which can be reversibly controlled through the irradiation at the wavelengths of 254 nm and 365 nm. Furthermore, both non-covalent supramolecular hyperbranched polymers and covalent supramolecular hyperbranched polymers can self-assemble into spherical structures. This methodology provides a new idea for exploring a new type of supramolecular hyperbranched polymers with aggregation-induced emission.

Abstract:Photoswitchable fluorescent self‐assemblies exhibiting aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) properties have garnered widespread attention. Due to their great adaptiveness and responsiveness towards different wavelengths required by photoreaction, photo‐isomerization, and photoluminescence excitation, these fluorescent self‐assemblies show diverse emission behavior in a spatial, temporal, and polychromatic manner. Integrating organic photoswitches and AIE fluorophores, these photoluminescent nano‐assemblies has been proven to be an effective approach, allowing the development of sophisticated systems for drug release and cell regulation that can be precisely manipulated through light or other stimuli. This review systematically encapsulates recent advances in photoswitchable fluorescent self‐assemblies under multi‐scenario biological applications. The construction of photoswitchable AIE fluorophores through covalent and non‐covalent interactions and their multimodal regulation are detailed, along with their biological applications in biosensing, bioimaging, and drug therapy.

Abstract:Conformational regulation among two or more distant sites is not only one of the main pathways to accomplish multiple tasks in complex biological systems but also represents a powerful strategy to obtain stimuli-responsive supramolecular nanoconstructs with tailored physicochemical performance. We herein report the fabrication of a photochromic supramolecular assembly, which can be synergistically activated by the conformational regulation with bis(4,8-disulfonato-1,5-naphtho)-32-crown-8 and then reversibly switched by the through-space communication between restricted stilbazolium salt and photochromic dithienylethene. This work demonstrates that the synergistic conformational modulation via intra- and intermolecular interactions can be developed as a generalizable approach to construct more advanced biomimetic nanomaterials.
