Abstract:Microbes are all pervasive in their distribution and influence on the functioning and wellbeing of humans, life in general and the planet. Understanding their activities is vital for decisions and policies at all levels, in particular those relating to sustainability. The International Microbiology Literacy Initiative (IMiLI) is a global microbiology community creating freely available teaching resources to promote literacy in societally‐relevant microbiology worldwide. The resources also teach about global citizenship, sustainability, and critical and systems thinking. IMiLI Regional Centres adapt and translate resources to regional needs and languages, and promote their use in educational facilities and web‐based learning. Executive summary Microbes are all pervasive in their distribution and influence on the functioning and well‐being of humans, life in general and the planet. Microbially‐based technologies contribute hugely to the supply of important goods and services we depend upon, such as the provision of food, medicines and clean water. They also offer mechanisms and strategies to mitigate and solve a wide range of problems and crises facing humanity at all levels, including those encapsulated in the sustainable development goals (SDGs) formulated by the United Nations. For example, microbial technologies can contribute in multiple ways to decarbonisation and hence confronting global warming, provide sanitation and clean water to the billions of people lacking them, improve soil fertility and hence food production and develop vaccines and other medicines to reduce and in some cases eliminate deadly infections. They are the foundation of biotechnology, an increasingly important and growing business sector and source of employment, and the centre of the bioeconomy, Green Deal, etc. But, because microbes are largely invisible, they are not familiar to most people, so opportunities they offer to effectively prevent and solve problems are often missed by decision‐makers, with the negative consequences this entrains. To correct this lack of vital knowledge, the International Microbiology Literacy Initiative–the IMiLI–is recruiting from the global microbiology community and making freely available, teaching resources for a curriculum in societally relevant microbiology that can be used at all levels of learning. Its goal is the development of a society that is literate in relevant microbiology and, as a consequence, able to take full advantage of the potential of microbes and minimise the consequences of their negative activities. In addition to teaching about microbes, almost every lesson discusses the influence they have on sustainability and the SDGs and their ability to solve pressing problems of societal inequalities. The curriculum thus teaches about sustainability, societal needs and global citizenship. The lessons also reveal the impacts microbes and their activities have on our daily lives at the personal, family, community, national and global levels and their relevance for decisions at all levels. And, because effective, evidence‐based decisions require not only relevant information but also critical and systems thinking, the resources also teach about these key generic aspects of deliberation. The IMiLI teaching resources are learner‐centric, not academic microbiology‐centric and deal with the microbiology of everyday issues. These span topics as diverse as owning and caring for a companion animal, the vast range of everyday foods that are produced via microbial processes, impressive geological formations created by microbes, childhood illnesses and how they are managed and how to reduce waste and pollution. They also leverage the exceptional excitement of exploration and discovery that typifies much progress in microbiology to capture the interest, inspire and motivate educators and learners alike. The IMiLI is establishing Regional Centres to translate the teaching resources into regional languages and adapt them to regional cultures, and to promote their use and assist educators employing them. Two of these are now operational. The Regional Centres constitute the interface between resource creators and educators–learners. As such, they will collect and analyse feedback from the end‐users and transmit this to the resource creators so that teaching materials can be improved and refined, and new resources added in response to demand: educators and learners will thereby be directly involved in evolution of the teaching resources. The interactions between educators–learners and resource creators mediated by the Regional Centres will establish dynamic and synergistic relationships–a global societally relevant microbiology education ecosystem–in which creators also become learners, teaching resources are optimised and all players/stakeholders are empowered and their motivation increased. Abstract:Assessment is an important component in teaching management,and plays a vital role in learning orientation.In the teaching of Microbiology and Microbial Experiments,a close attention should be paid to such a guiding role.At the beginning of the course,the composition and proportion of the grade points should be outlined.Beside routine participation in class,students should also be able to expand their knowledge body by doing literature research from internet and library.For this purpose,a series of lab reports and a course presentation were required.The lab examination accounted for 10％ of the total score,and the tested skills included inoculating,smearing,staining and oil microscopic technique;The final written examination accounted for 50％ of the total score,and the tested capacities included the abilities to master the basic concepts,the abilities to synthesize multiple knowledge sources,and the abilities to analyze and solve problems.The evaluation guide sets a goal for students to systematically master microbiology knowledge,and to comprehensively improve their experimental skills and innovation abilities as well.

Abstract:Advanced teaching facilities and the policy of opening laboratories to students play an important role in raising the quality in the experimental teaching of Genetics. This article introduces the superiority of some advanced instruments and equipment (such as digital microscope mutual laboratory system, flow cytometry, and NIRSystems) in the experimental teaching of genetics, and illustrates with examples the significance of exposing students to experiments in developing their creative consciousness and creative ability. This article also offers some new concepts on the further improvement upon teaching in the laboratory.

Abstract:State-of-the-art papers from around the globe addressing current topics in education were published in the FEMS Microbiology Letters virtual Thematic Issue 'Education' in November 2015 (http://femsle.oxfordjournals.org/content/thematic-issue-education), which was innovative and well received by microbiologists and other educators. Its unique content is reviewed here to facilitate broader access and further discussions in the professional community. Best practice in supporting school teaching and exposing students to concepts from other disciplines is presented in context of inspiring the next generations, where also historical microbiology can be drawn upon. Technology-enhanced education is discussed including its applications (e.g. lecture podcasts for flipped learning, learning from experts via videoconference). Authentic learning is covered with examples of research-led teaching, water and showerhead biofilm analyses and participation in the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition. Enhancing employability is focussed on, including supporting personal development and work-readiness in general and for the changing nature of the microbiology profession. International mobility develops international awareness but challenges teachers. Teaching training, teaching excellence and dissemination of best practice are reviewed. Times of challenge and change in the Higher Education landscape motivate us to improve educational approaches and frameworks, so that we are prepared for new topics to emerge as current topics in education.

Abstract:We have recently argued that, because microbes have pervasive - often vital - influences on our lives, and that therefore their roles must be taken into account in many of the decisions we face, society must become microbiology-literate, through the introduction of relevant microbiology topics in school curricula (Timmis et al. 2019. Environ Microbiol 21: 1513-1528). The current coronavirus pandemic is a stark example of why microbiology literacy is such a crucial enabler of informed policy decisions, particularly those involving preparedness of public-health systems for disease outbreaks and pandemics. However, a significant barrier to attaining widespread appreciation of microbial contributions to our well-being and that of the planet is the fact that microbes are seldom visible: most people are only peripherally aware of them, except when they fall ill with an infection. And it is disease, rather than all of the positive activities mediated by microbes, that colours public perception of 'germs' and endows them with their poor image. It is imperative to render microbes visible, to give them life and form for children (and adults), and to counter prevalent misconceptions, through exposure to imagination-capturing images of microbes and examples of their beneficial outputs, accompanied by a balanced narrative. This will engender automatic mental associations between everyday information inputs, as well as visual, olfactory and tactile experiences, on the one hand, and the responsible microbes/microbial communities, on the other hand. Such associations, in turn, will promote awareness of microbes and of the many positive and vital consequences of their actions, and facilitate and encourage incorporation of such consequences into relevant decision-making processes. While teaching microbiology topics in primary and secondary school is key to this objective, a strategic programme to expose children directly and personally to natural and managed microbial processes, and the results of their actions, through carefully planned class excursions to local venues, can be instrumental in bringing microbes to life for children and, collaterally, their families. In order to encourage the embedding of microbiology-centric class excursions in current curricula, we suggest and illustrate here some possibilities relating to the topics of food (a favourite pre-occupation of most children), agriculture (together with horticulture and aquaculture), health and medicine, the environment and biotechnology. And, although not all of the microbially relevant infrastructure will be within reach of schools, there is usually access to a market, local food store, wastewater treatment plant, farm, surface water body, etc., all of which can provide opportunities to explore microbiology in action. If children sometimes consider the present to be mundane, even boring, they are usually excited with both the past and the future so, where possible, visits to local museums (the past) and research institutions advancing knowledge frontiers (the future) are strongly recommended, as is a tapping into the natural enthusiasm of local researchers to leverage the educational value of excursions and virtual excursions. Children are also fascinated by the unknown, so, paradoxically, the invisibility of microbes makes them especially fascinating objects for visualization and exploration. In outlining some of the options for microbiology excursions, providing suggestions for discussion topics and considering their educational value, we strive to extend the vistas of current class excursions and to: (i) inspire teachers and school managers to incorporate more microbiology excursions into curricula; (ii) encourage microbiologists to support school excursions and generally get involved in bringing microbes to life for children; (iii) urge leaders of organizations (biopharma, food industries, universities, etc.) to give school outreach activities a more prominent place in their mission portfolios, and (iv) convey to policymakers the benefits of providing schools with funds, materials and flexibility for educational endeavours beyond the classroom.
Keeping education fresh—not just in microbiology

Abstract:Innovative practice from around the globe, addressing a range of recent educational themes and trends, was published in the FEMS Microbiology Letters virtual Thematic Issue 'Keeping Education Fresh' in October 2017. Its thought-provoking content is reviewed here to more directly facilitate reflections and discussions in the professional community. The focus is on best practice approaches when enhancing student engagement, how to adjust those to the diversity of learners, learning situations and infrastructures, and to a broad range of subjects. The need for authentic learning and to move away from didactic teaching is emphasized. The 'students as researchers' theme is featured e.g. in context of service learning. Creative approaches are presented such as using performing arts, popular culture and gamification. The development of interdisciplinary and intercultural competences, and the exploration of socioscientific themes and philosophical issues are considered. Revisions of curricula and programmes, reflective of educational advancements and sector drivers, are discussed from undergraduate to postgraduate and professional specialist level also in light of problem-based learning, interactive distance and on-campus learning, and even the legacy of Massive Open Online Courses. Such changes always require resources and skills, and carry risks. Yet, innovation is a risk worth taking to keep education fresh.

Abstract:Investigative- and cooperative-based learning strategies have been used effectively in a variety of classrooms to enhance student learning and engagement. In the General Microbiology laboratory for juniors and seniors at James Madison University, these strategies were combined to make a semester-long, investigative, cooperative learning experience involving culture and identification of microbial isolates that the students obtained from various environments. To assess whether this strategy was successful, students were asked to complete a survey at the beginning and at the end of the semester regarding their comfort level with a variety of topics. For most of the topics queried, the students reported that their comfort had increased significantly during the semester. Furthermore, this group of students thought that the quality of this investigative lab experience was much better than that of any of their previous lab experiences.

The new microbiology: cultivating the future of microbiome-directed medicine

Abstract:The discovery of human-associated microscopic life forms has captivated the scientific community since their first documentation in the 17th century. Subsequent isolation and cultivation of microorganisms have spurred great leaps in medicine, including the discovery of antibiotics, identifying pathogens that cause infectious diseases, and vaccine development. The realization that there is a vast discrepancy between the number of microscopic cell counts and how many could thrive in the laboratory motivated the advent of sequencing-based approaches to characterize the uncultured fraction of the microbiota, leading to an unprecedented view into their composition and putative function on all bodily surfaces. It soon became apparent that specific members of the microbiota can be our commensal partners with new implications on various aspects of health, as well as a rich source of therapeutic compounds and tools for biotechnology. Harnessing the immense repertoire of microbial properties, however, inadvertently requires pure cultures for validation and manipulation of candidate genes, proteins, or metabolic pathways, just as mammalian cell culture has become an indispensable tool for mechanistic understanding of host biology. Yet, this renewed interest in growing microorganisms, individually or as a consortium, is stalled by the laborious nature of conventional cultivation methods. Addressing this unmet need through implementation of improved media design and new cultivation techniques is arguably instrumental to future milestones in translational microbiome research.

Microbiology at Home (M@H): an Online, Self-Paced Solution To Enhance Practical Skills in Foundation Microbiology

Abstract:The online education market share is rapidly increasing, raising the demand to teach sciences outside the laboratory environment. Here, we present Microbiology at Home (M@H), a new approach that integrates hands-on microbiology experimentation with online interactive simulations using authentic scenarios in microbiology in the home environment. The M@H program includes 8 practical activities aligned to the ASM curriculum for practical skills. M@H kits are mailed to students, and each practical activity is prepacked individually with the required consumables, including microbial culture media to prepare at home using a microwave. These practicals are self-paced, and each activity is facilitated using a two-dimensional simulation package with prerecorded videos, protocols, and interactive activities. The students receive both synchronous and asynchronous support and guidance through online learning management systems fora and virtual gatherings. The M@H program was applied to an Introductory Microbiology cohort at the University of New England in 2020 and 2021. Based on student feedback, the experience not only provided real hands-on practice in microbiology but also acted to cement the engagement with the content by contextualizing it to the surrounding home environment. We anticipate that these activities will provide a way to successfully engage students with hands-on microbiology without the need for actual laboratory attendance, thus increasing accessibility to microbial protocols and applications.
[Exploring a novel instructional paradigm for the Fundamentals of Immunity and Infection module in our university: A study based on the O-PIRTAS flipped classroom approach]

Abstract:Medical Microbiology and Medical Immunology are important components of our university's the modular teaching on fundamentals of immunity and infection. Among these, Bacterial Infection and Immunity serves as a bridge between Medical Microbiology and Medical Immunology. This chapter mainly introduces how pathogenic bacteria invade the body to cause infection and how the body's immune system resists bacterial infection. Studying this chapter, students can build a framework knowledge on infection-immunity. However, due to the complexity of the content and the limited duration of the course, the traditional teaching method struggles to help students clarify the knowledge structure, resulting in poor learning outcomes. Therefore, there is an urgent need for reforms. Using the bacterial infection and immunity chapter as an example, this article explores the teaching reform of the Fundamentals of Immunology and Infection module based on the O-PIRTAS flipped classroom model, providing valuable insights for subsequent teaching reforms.
Teaching "Crafty Microbiology": Safely Teaching Hands-On Microbiology Skills at Home

Abstract:Using nontoxic craft items and disposable lab consumables, we have developed nine modules to teach fundamental, hands-on microbiology lab skills safely at home. These "Crafty" teaching modules can be paired with virtual instruction and/or data collected by an instructor to replicate traditional microbiology lab exercises that characterize an unknown microbe. Materials and procedures used were carefully chosen to best mimic the texture of media, represent microbial diversity, assess aseptic technique, and produce analyzable data from results. Some protocols build upon and extend previously unpublished ideas, while others provide novel methods. The lab skills include proper personal protective equipment usage and basic biosafety, aseptic technique, microscopy and staining, streaking for isolation, spread plating, serial dilutions, filtering, disk diffusion method, and modeling an epidemic. Each protocol includes a student handout with background, links to videos of the methods performed with microbes, a rationale for the pairing of craft and consumable lab supplies along with technique used, a video or image demonstration of the "Crafty" technique when needed, postlab questions, and an instructor guide. This resource was developed for an undergraduate microbiology course, and each lab is aligned with learning outcomes within the American Society for Microbiology's undergraduate curriculum guidelines. This work would also be useful for outreach and K-12 educators. The development of microbiology lab skills by all students, regardless of economic or health status, will lead to a more scientifically minded society.
Gamification as a tool to teach key concepts in microbiology to bachelor-level students in biology: a case study using microbial interactions and soil functioning

Abstract:Microbiology is a difficult topic to teach given that the objects of study are mostly invisible to the learner. The majority of university students beginning their training in biology are more interested in natural objects that can be seen with the naked eye. Nonetheless, micro-organisms are key components of the biosphere and a good microbiological background is required for a thorough training in natural sciences. Lectures are still a common teaching format in universities. However, it is a passive learning format and no longer considered the most adequate approach in most teaching situations. Instead, alternatives consisting of more active teaching formats have been recognized to better motivate students to acquire and consolidate knowledge. In addition, transferable skills, such as effective communication, critical thinking and time management, are acquired simultaneously. A similar engagement can be obtained using games as part of the teaching experience. In this study, we designed a card game to teach key concepts in basic bacteriology and mycology to bachelor-level students. The first task consists of creating and designing microbial characters based on a list of species. This proved very useful for second-year bachelor students in terms of grasping concepts such as cell morphologies, taxonomy and life cycles. In the second task, third-year students used the characters created in the second-year class to develop a game based on an ecological function, namely forest litter degradation. In addition, they also considered experimental validation of the microbial activities and incorporated knowledge acquired in other fields.
A Culturally Responsive Curricular Revision to Improve Engagement and Learning in an Undergraduate Microbiology Lab Course

Abstract:We seek to increase student engagement and success to subsequently lead to increased retention and degree attainment for students at our Hispanic-serving institution. We hypothesized that using a culturally responsive approach in an undergraduate microbiology lab would increase engagement and learning gains. Using a culturally responsive approach allowed students to start their learning from their own place of understanding—centering students’ lived experiences. Students interviewed family members to learn about “home remedies,” and then devised experiments to test whether those home remedies affected growth of bacteria commonly implicated in gastrointestinal distress ( Staphylococcus aureus , Bacillus cereus , and Escherichia coli ) or sore throat ( Neisseria gonorrhoeae , Streptococcus pyogenes , and Mycoplasma pneumoniae ). As a final assessment, students generated project posters which they presented at a class symposium. Implementation of a culturally responsive research experience focused on the gut microbiome resulted in increased learning gains as evidenced by movement up Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy Scale. Student feedback indicated increased engagement, increased confidence in communicating science and a deeper understanding and appreciation for microbiology. Taken together, the results indicate that students appreciate a more culturally responsive and student-centered approach to learning in microbiology and encourages expansion of this approach to other modules in the course. This paper includes responsive data to support this claim, as well as a sample course calendar and supplementary learning material to support the human microbiome approach to microbiology.

Abstract:In the ever-changing environment of advanced technology use in education, many things are becoming, if not obsolete, then irrelevant. The education market is still teaming with traditional microbiology textbooks from seasoned authors despite the presence of new, interactive, and colorful textbooks that are student-friendly and relevant. Although senior instructors in the field of education continue to assemble collections of textbooks on their office shelves, college students’ bags have lightened and now accommodate a laptop rather than weighty textbooks. At Chicago State University (CSU) we surveyed our current student population from years 1 to 4. The 120-students registered in the College of Health Sciences and Pharmacy were enrolled in the study and were asked questions using the Google form survey tool. The questionnaire included questions about all course textbooks including microbiology. The data suggested that less than 1% of the students bought a textbook as mandated in the course syllabi. 5% of the students studied from free Portable Document Format (PDF) versions available through the internet. More than 90% of the students affirmed that they do not find the need or time to read textbooks. They not only found them boring but an absolute waste of their precious time. The students also reiterated that the content of the textbooks was never tested in their exams and assessments. The respondents overwhelmingly declared that the price of textbooks was not the major issue, and their student loans would cover the book allowances. We speculate that with this rising trend of textbook-free course offerings, there will not only be a shortage of useful textbooks in the education market but that young authors in the field of microbiology will become discouraged and disillusioned. Abstract:Microbial technologies constitute a huge and unique potential for confronting major humanitarian and biosphere challenges, especially in the realms of sustainability and providing basic goods and services where they are needed and particularly in low‐resource settings. These technologies are evolving rapidly. Powerful approaches are being developed to create novel products, processes, and circular economies, including new prophylactics and therapies in healthcare, bioelectric systems, and whole‐cell understanding of metabolism that provides novel insights into mechanisms and how they can be utilised for applications. The modulation of microbiomes promises to create important applications and mitigate problems in a number of spheres. Collectively, microbial technologies save millions of lives each year and have the potential, through increased deployment, to save many more. They help restore environmental health, improve soil fertility, enable regenerative agriculture, reduce biodiversity losses, reduce pollution, and mitigate polluted environments. Many microbial technologies may be considered to be 'healing' technologies – healing of humans, of other members of the biosphere, and of the environment. This is the Age of Microbial Technology. However, the current exploitation of microbial technologies in the service of humanity and planetary health is woefully inadequate and this failing unnecessarily costs many lives and biosphere deterioration. Microbiologists – the practitioners of these healing technologies – have a special, preordained responsibility to promote and increase their deployment for the good of humanity and the planet. To do this effectively – to actually make a difference – microbiologists will need to partner with key enablers and gatekeepers, players such as other scientists with essential complementary skills like bioengineering and bioinformatics, politicians, financiers, and captains of industry, international organisations, and the general public. Orchestration and coordination of the establishment and functioning of effective partnerships will best be accomplished by learned societies, their academies, and the international umbrella organisations of learned societies. Effective dedication of players to the tasks at hand will require unstinting support from employers, particularly the heads of institutes of higher education and of research establishments. Humanity and the biosphere are currently facing challenges to their survival not experienced for millennia. Effectively confronting these challenges is existential, and microbiologists and their learned societies have pivotal roles to play: they must step up and act now.

Abstract:The experiment of Medical Microbiology is an important component of the teaching of Medical Microbiology.Designing experiments can help to improve the students' hand-on skills and their ability to analyse and solve problems independently.Medical Microbiology designing experiments allow students to be able to learn theoretical knowledge from practices,to obtain more comprehensive and systematic understanding of Medical Microbiology.This paper discussed the role of designing experiments in Medical Microbiology teaching through four aspects,updating teaching ideas,designing experimental system,optimizing experiment contents and synchronizing experiment platforms.

Abstract:Four points should be emphasized when introducing microbiology practice contents into biology fieldwork: trying to observe microscopic organisms with macroscopic methods,emphasizing the relationships and interactions between microorganisms and their environments,combining microbiology fieldwork with uni-versity students' research training,and conducting microbiology fieldwork with the practical fieldwork condi-tions in mind.Besides,the time,arrangement,method and content of microbiology fieldwork,as well as the enhancement of cultivating talent of macroscopic fungi are discussed in the article.

Abstract:There is a rapid development in medical microbiology nowadays. In addition, the new-emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases still present as serious threatens to human beings. Therefore, the classical text-book-based teaching model is hard to meet the demand of teaching, clinical practice and scientific research. The literature review was applied in the course of medical microbiology to help students get advanced knowledge more efficiently and improve their analytical, summarizing, writing and communicating capacities. Students gave a very positive comment on this teaching reform.

Abstract:To advance medical education and meet the need to foster new medical personnel,attempts were made by the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology of Peking University to revise the medical microbiology lab course system in line with educational reforms(New Approaches) of Peking University's Health Science Center.This was done to adjust,update,and optimize the current lab course curriculum in accordance with the requirements of relevant national policies and regulations and aspects of the medical profession.On the basis of enhanced empirical labs specific to medical microbiology,emphasis was placed on integrating relevant disciplines and a comprehensive lab curriculum was designed with different levels.The new system of lab courses is suited to aspects of the medical profession and current developments in medical education.In addition,a preliminary lab course in biosafety(BSL-2+) was designed and digital and web technology will be used to teach lab courses on their existing basis to meet the requirements of national policies and regulations as much as possible.The establishment and implementation of a new system of lab courses in medical microbiology were achieved under the framework of the New Approaches model of teaching reform.This format may facilitate aspects such as meeting the requirements of national regulations,developing lab courses tailored to medical students,and fostering new medical personnel.
