Abstract:Neuroimaging has undergone enormous progress during the last two and a half decades. The combination of neuroscientific methods and educational practice has become a focus of interdisciplinary research in order to answer more applied questions. In this realm, conditions that hamper learning success and have deleterious effects in the population – such as learning disorders (LD) – could especially profit from neuroimaging findings. At the moment, however, there is an ongoing debate about how far neuroscientific research can go to inform the practical work in educational settings. Here, we put forward a theoretical translational framework as a method of conducting neuroimaging and bridging it to education, with a main focus on dyscalculia and dyslexia. Our work seeks to represent a theoretical but mainly empirical guide on the benefits of neuroimaging, which can help people working with different aspects of LD, who need to act collaboratively to reach the full potential of neuroimaging. We provide possible ideas regarding how neuroimaging can inform LD at different levels within our multidirectional framework, i.e., mechanisms, diagnosis/prognosis, training/intervention, and community/education. In addition, we discuss methodological, conceptual, and structural limitations that need to be addressed by future research.

Abstract:Sue Fletcher-Watson holds a Personal Chair in Developmental Psychology at the University of Edinburgh, and is Director of the Salvesen Mindroom Research Centre. She is interested in how children grow and learn, with a particular focus on development, neurodiversity and autism across the lifespan. Her work draws on rigorous methods from psychology and applies these to questions with clinical, educational and societal impact. She strives to achieve meaningful partnerships with community representatives and to support neurodivergent leadership in research. She is an advocate for open science and good citizenship in research, and serves as Co-Director of Research Ethics for the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Abstract Neurodiversity is a simple, incontrovertible scientific fact, and yet the implications of this concept are both profound and radical. In this talk I will briefly examine how we have attempted to define, diagnose and support autistic people to date, showing the failings of these approaches. I will then go on to define neurodiversity and three core tenets of the neurodiversity paradigm. I will directly address some of the myths around neurodiversity, drawing on the work of prominent neurodivergent scholars to provide a solid basis for understanding. In the second half of the talk, I will then explore the potential of a neurodiversity paradigm to improve how we identify and provide support to autistic people. I will work through the implications of neurodiversity for clinical diagnostic and therapeutic practice, including a specific rebuttal of concerns that the neurodiversity movement is aligned with an anti-psychiatry position. I will ask: what would neurodiversity-affirmative services look like? And why and how should we create them?

Abstract:This Viewpoint explores challenges within the neurodiversity framework, with a particular focus on autism, and discusses three critical aspects: the risk of epistemic injustice, the balance between over and undermedicalization, and the terminological complexities associated with the "neuro-" prefix. It underscores the importance of a balanced approach that avoids overmedicalization while providing essential support, addresses concerns about the indiscriminate use of "neurodiverse", questions the terminology on neurodiversity, and suggests considering a broader term like "biopsychosocial diversity". Ultimately, this Viewpoint advocates for a measured approach to neurodiversity, emphasizing historical context and a diverse perspective to foster collaboration between cognitive science and behavior research.
Changing perspectives on autism: Overlapping contributions of evolutionary psychiatry and the neurodiversity movement

Abstract:Perspectives on autism and psychiatric conditions are affected by a mix of scientific and social influences. Evolutionary psychiatry (EP) and the neurodiversity movement are emerging paradigms that reflect these distinct influences, with the former grounded in scientific theory and the latter driven by political and social principles. Despite their separate foundations, there is a significant overlap between EP and neurodiversity that has not been explored. Specifically, both paradigms reframe disorders as natural cognitive differences rather than disease; expand the concept of "normal" beyond that implied in modern psychiatry; focus on relative strengths; recognize that modern environments disadvantage certain individuals to cause functional impairment; emphasize cognitive variation being socially accommodated and integrated rather than treated or cured; and can help reduce stigmatization. However, in other ways, they are distinct and sometimes in conflict. EP emphasizes scientific explanation, defines "dysfunction" in objective terms, and differentiates heterogenous cases based on underlying causes (e.g. autism due to de novo genetic mutations). The neurodiversity movement emphasizes social action, removes barriers to inclusion, promotes inclusive language, and allows unrestricted identification as neurodivergent. By comparing and contrasting these two approaches, we find that EP can, to some extent, support the goals of neurodiversity. In particular, EP perspectives could be convincing to groups more responsive to scientific evidence and help achieve a middle ground between neurodiversity advocates and critics of the movement.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. Over the past decade, a considerable number of approaches have been developed to identify potential neuroimaging-based biomarkers of ASD that have uncovered specific neural mechanisms that underlie behaviors associated with ASD. However, the substantial heterogeneity among individuals who are diagnosed with ASD hinders the development of biomarkers. Disentangling the heterogeneity of ASD is pivotal to improving the quality of life for individuals with ASD by facilitating early diagnosis and individualized interventions for those who need support. In this review, we discuss recent advances in neuroimaging that have facilitated the characterization of the heterogeneity of this condition using 3 frameworks: neurosubtyping, dimensional models, and normative models. We also discuss the challenges, possible solutions, and clinical utility of these 3 frameworks. We argue that several factors need to be considered when parsing heterogeneity using neuroimaging, including co-occurring conditions, neurodevelopment, heredity and environment, and multisite and multimodal data. We close with a discussion of future directions for achieving a better understanding of the neural mechanisms that underlie neurodevelopmental heterogeneity and the future of precision medicine in ASD.

Abstract:The term neurodiversity was coined in the 1990s to describe a diversity in thinking, learning, and processing the world around us, and is associated with strengths as well as challenges. Rates of diagnosis of neurodivergent conditions are rising rapidly amongst patients and healthcare professionals, largely due to a recent surge in awareness and understanding of neurodiverse conditions and more inclusive diagnostic criteria. Societal adaptation, however, has lagged, and likely explains some of the psychosocial comorbidities of neurodiversity, as individuals are forced to adapt their personality and how they display their emotions to fit societal norms. There remains a lack of awareness and understanding of neurodiversity amongst the healthcare professions. There is also very limited published literature on the challenges and strengths of this group in the clinical environment. Here, we use a case study, focusing on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to explore the relationship between neurodiversity and work from the perspective of a neurodiverse health care professional. We challenge the notion that neurodiversity itself is a disability, but more likely a result of lack of societal awareness and adaption. We suggest accommodations and training in the clinical environment to raise awareness and support neurodiverse healthcare professionals in order that they flourish rather than struggle in the workplace.
Unpacking the Overlap between Autism and ADHD in Adults: A Multi-Method Approach

Abstract:The overlap between Autism and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is widely observed in clinical settings, with growing interest in their co-occurrence in neurodiversity research. Until relatively recently, however, concurrent diagnoses of Autism and ADHD were not possible. This has limited the scope for large-scale research on their cross-condition associations, further stymied by a dearth of open science practices in the neurodiversity field. Additionally, almost all previous research linking Autism and ADHD has focused on children and adolescents, despite them being lifelong conditions. Tackling these limitations in previous research, 5504 adults – including a nationally representative sample of the UK (Study 1; n = 504) and a large pre-registered study (Study 2; n = 5000) – completed well-established self-report measures of Autism and ADHD traits. A series of network analyses unpacked the associations between Autism and ADHD at the individual trait level. Low inter-item connectivity was consistently found between conditions, supporting the distinction between Autism and ADHD as separable constructs. Subjective social enjoyment and hyperactivity-impulsivity traits were most condition-specific to Autism and ADHD, respectively. Traits related to attention control showed the greatest Bridge Expected Influence across conditions, revealing a potential transdiagnostic process underlying the overlap between Autism and ADHD. To investigate this further at the cognitive level, participants completed a large, well-powered, and pre-registered study measuring the relative contributions of Autism and ADHD traits to attention control (Study 3; n = 500). We detected age- and sex-related effects, however, attention control did not account for the covariance between Autism and ADHD traits. We situate our findings and discuss future directions in the cognitive science of Autism, ADHD, and neurodiversity, noting how our open datasets may be used in future research.

Abstract:Since its initial description, the concept of autism has been firmly rooted within the conventional medical paradigm of child psychiatry. Increasingly, there have been calls from the autistic community and, more recently, nonautistic researchers, to rethink the way in which autism science is framed and conducted. Neurodiversity, where autism is seen as one form of variation within a diversity of minds, has been proposed as a potential alternative paradigm. In this review, we concentrate on three major challenges to the conventional medical paradigm - an overfocus on deficits, an emphasis on the individual as opposed to their broader context and a narrowness of perspective - each of which necessarily constrains what we can know about autism and how we are able to know it. We then outline the ways in which fundamental elements of the neurodiversity paradigm can potentially help researchers respond to the medical model's limitations. We conclude by considering the implications of a shift towards the neurodiversity paradigm for autism science.

Abstract:Features of autism spectrum disorder, attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, intellectual disabilities, and communication and motor disorders usually emerge early in life and are associated with atypical neurodevelopment. These "neurodevelopmental conditions" are grouped together in the DSM‐5 and ICD‐11 to reflect their shared characteristics. Yet, reliance on categorical diagnoses poses significant challenges in both research and clinical settings (e.g., high co‐occurrence, arbitrary diagnostic boundaries, high within‐disorder heterogeneity). Taking a transdiagnostic dimensional approach provides a useful alternative for addressing these limitations, accounting for shared underpinnings across neurodevelopmental conditions, and characterizing their common co‐occurrence and developmental continuity with other psychiatric conditions. Neurodevelopmental features have not been adequately considered in transdiagnostic psychiatric frameworks, although this would have fundamental implications for research and clinical practices. Growing evidence from studies on the structure of neurodevelopmental and other psychiatric conditions indicates that features of neurodevelopmental conditions cluster together, delineating a "neurodevelopmental spectrum" ranging from normative to impairing profiles. Studies on shared genetic underpinnings, overlapping cognitive and neural profiles, and similar developmental course and efficacy of support/treatment strategies indicate the validity of this neurodevelopmental spectrum. Further, characterizing this spectrum alongside other psychiatric dimensions has clinical utility, as it provides a fuller view of an individual's needs and strengths, and greater prognostic utility than diagnostic categories. Based on this compelling body of evidence, we argue that incorporating a new neurodevelopmental spectrum into transdiagnostic frameworks has considerable potential for transforming our understanding, classification, assessment, and clinical practices around neurodevelopmental and other psychiatric conditions.

Abstract:Since its inception, the concept of neurodiversity has been defined in a number of different ways, which can cause confusion among those hoping to educate themselves about the topic. Learning about neurodiversity can also be challenging because there is a lack of well-curated, appropriately contextualized information on the topic. To address such barriers, we present an annotated reading list that was developed collaboratively by a neurodiverse group of researchers. The nine themes covered in the reading list are: the history of neurodiversity; ways of thinking about neurodiversity; the importance of lived experience; a neurodiversity paradigm for autism science; beyond deficit views of ADHD; expanding the scope of neurodiversity; anti-ableism; the need for robust theory and methods; and integration with open and participatory work. We hope this resource can support readers in understanding some of the key ideas and topics within neurodiversity, and that it can further orient researchers towards more rigorous, destigmatizing, accessible, and inclusive scientific practices.

Abstract:The field of developmental psychopathology has grown exponentially over the past decades, and has become increasingly multifaceted. The initial focus on understanding abnormal child psychology has broadened to the study of the origins of psychopathology, with the goals of preventing and alleviating disorder and promoting healthy development. In this paper, we discuss how technological advances and global events have expanded the questions that researchers in developmental psychopathology can address. We do so by describing a longitudinal study that we have been conducting for the past dozen years. We originally planned to examine the effects of early adversity on trajectories of brain development, endocrine function, and depressive symptoms across puberty; it has since become an interdisciplinary study encompassing diverse domains like inflammation, sleep, biological aging, the environment, and child functioning post-pandemic, that we believe will advance our understanding of neurobehavioral development. This increase in the breadth in our study emerged from an expansion of the field; we encourage researchers to embrace these dynamic changes. In this context, we discuss challenges, opportunities, and institutional changes related to the growing interdisciplinarity of the field with respect to training the next generation of investigators to mitigate the burden of mental illness in youth.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The term neurodiversity is defined and discussed from the perspectives of neuroscience, psychology and campaigners with lived experience, illustrating the development of aetiological theories for included neurodevelopmental disorders. The emerging discourse is discussed with relevance to adults, social inclusion, occupational performance and the legislative obligations of organizations. Sources of data Literature is reviewed from medicine, psychiatry, psychology, sociology and popular press. No new data are presented in this article. Areas of agreement There is consensus regarding some neurodevelopmental conditions being classed as neurominorities, with a ‘spiky profile’ of executive functions difficulties juxtaposed against neurocognitive strengths as a defining characteristic. Areas of controversy The developing nomenclature is debated and the application of disability status versus naturally occurring difference. Diagnosis and legal protections vary geographically, resulting in heretofore unclear guidance for practitioners and employers. Growing points The evolutionary critique of the medical model, recognizing and updating clinical approaches considering the emerging consensus and paradigmatic shift. Areas timely for developing research It is recommended that research addresses more functional, occupational concerns and includes the experiences of stakeholders in research development, moving away from diagnosis and deficit towards multi-disciplinary collaboration within a biopsychosocial model.

Abstract:Neurodiversity is a concept and a social movement that addresses and normalizes human neurocognitive heterogeneity to promote acceptance and inclusion of neuro-minorities (e.g., learning disabilities, attention disorders, psychiatric disorders, and more) in contemporary society. Neurodiversity is attributed to nature and nurture factors, and about a fifth of the human population is considered neurodivergent. What does neurodiversity mean neuroscientifically? This question forms the foundation of the present entry, which focuses on existing scientific evidence on neurodiversity including neurodiversity between and within individuals, and the evolutional perspective of neurodiversity. Furthermore, the neuroscientific view will be synergistically integrated with social approaches, particularly in the context of the normalization of neurodiversity and its association with the medical and social models of disability. This multidimensional analysis offers a cohesive and comprehensive understanding of neurodiversity, drawing insights from various vantage points, such as social, psychological, clinical, and neuroscientific viewpoints. This integrated approach fosters a nuanced and holistic discussion on the topic of human diversity.

Abstract:Autistic people often have poor outcomes over the life course, including in health, education, employment, and community inclusion. Many professionals working with Autistic adults in research, clinical, and educational settings devote their careers to trying to improve such outcomes. However, we maintain that real progress cannot happen without a fundamental mindshift. The status quo for professionals is to view autism as an illness. Instead, the neurodiversity movement encourages us to value and embrace autism as an aspect of human diversity and asks us to view Autistic people as a marginalized group that experiences significant disparities. While some professionals may be adopting language and concepts from the neurodiversity movement, we argue that making this mindshift fundamentally changes our practice across research, clinical, and educational settings. In this perspective, we call on professionals to embrace this mindshift to reduce discrimination and stigma, halt the spread of harmful ideologies, and help Autistic adults live fulfilling lives.

Abstract:This paper presents the concepts of “neurodiversity” and the “neurodiversity approaches” towards disability. This paper discusses how confusion regarding the meaning of these concepts exacerbates debate and conflict surrounding the neurodiversity approaches. For example, some claim the neurodiversity approaches focus solely on society and denies contributions of individual characteristics to disability (a controversial stance), whereas this paper joins other literature in acknowledging the contributions of both individual and society to disability. This paper also addresses other controversies related to neurodiversity, such as uncertainty regarding the scope of the approaches – to whom do they apply? – and their implications for diagnostic categories. Finally, this paper provides recommendations for developmental researchers who wish to carry out neurodiversity-aligned research: scholars are urged to study both individual neurodivergent people and the contexts around them; to consider both strengths and weaknesses; to recognize their own biases; and to listen to and learn from neurodivergent people.

In the world of science, these differences are what spark innovation. This is why the scientific community needs to better recognize the enormous potential of neurodiversity and bear in mind that certain behavioral and cognitive traits that may strike some as unusual can be catalytic to the scientific quest.

Abstract:Abstract Proponents of autism intervention and those of the neurodiversity movement often appear at odds, the former advocating for intensive treatments and the latter arguing that autism must be accepted as a form of diversity. The history of behavioral intervention has understandably outraged many in the Autistic community, though many still value supports focused on quality of life. This commentary argues that Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) hold promise for bridging the gap between early intervention and the neurodiversity movement. However, we recognize NDBIs have much room to grow and suggest multiple strategies for improvement. We believe these updates are not only feasible for clinicians and researchers to implement but will ultimately lead to improved quality of life for Autistic individuals.

As more children are identified as autistic, more healthcare and educational professionals are involved in the care of these unique individuals. Understanding the challenges, as well as the strengths, of individuals on the autism spectrum is paramount to promoting the well-being of these children. One framework that aids in better understanding and supporting autistic individuals is the neurodiversity paradigm. The purpose of this practitioner review is to: (1) provide a broad overview of the tenets of the neurodiversity paradigm and (2) provide recommendations for neurodiversity affirming service provision.

We aim to provide a narrative review of key structural and functional properties that differentiate the neuroimaging profile of autistic youth from their typically developing (TD) peers across different neuroimaging modalities. Methods: Relevant studies were identified by searching for key terms in PubMed, with the most recent search conducted on September 1, 2023. Original research papers were included if they applied at least one of seven neuroimaging modalities (structural MRI, functional MRI, DTI, MRS, fNIRS, MEG, EEG) to compare autistic children or those with a family history of ASD to TD youth or those without ASD family history; included only participants <18 years; and were published from 2013 to 2023. Results: In total, 172 papers were considered for qualitative synthesis. When comparing ASD to TD groups, structural MRI-based papers (n = 26) indicated larger subcortical gray matter volume in ASD groups. DTI-based papers (n = 14) reported higher mean and radial diffusivity in ASD participants. Functional MRI-based papers (n = 41) reported a substantial number of between-network functional connectivity findings in both directions. MRS-based papers (n = 19) demonstrated higher metabolite markers of excitatory neurotransmission and lower inhibitory markers in ASD groups. fNIRS-based papers (n = 20) reported lower oxygenated hemoglobin signals in ASD. Converging findings in MEG- (n = 20) and EEG-based (n = 32) papers indicated lower event-related potential and field amplitudes in ASD groups. Findings in the anterior cingulate cortex, insula, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, thalamus, cerebellum, corpus callosum, and default mode network appeared numerous times across modalities and provided opportunities for multimodal qualitative analysis. Conclusions: Comparing across neuroimaging modalities, we found significant differences between the ASD and TD neuroimaging profile in addition to substantial heterogeneity. Inconsistent results are frequently seen within imaging modalities, comparable study populations and research designs. Still, converging patterns across imaging modalities support various existing theories on ASD.

Abstract:This article contributes to the discussion of neurodiversity and theological education by presenting a self-reflection by a group of researchers affiliated with the Centre for Autism and Theology at the University of Aberdeen. Literature on postgraduates' experiences is missing from the current discussion on neurodiversity in higher education. This article offers first-hand accounts as a start to address this gap in the literature. Through the self-reflection exercise, it became clear how this group goes beyond policy documents on equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) by embodying what it means to be a neurodiverse group and what working together looks like in practice. This was characterized by the following themes: all are valued, students feel well-supported, and space for multiple perspectives enabled challenging the status quo in churches, theology, and the wider autism discourse. Theologically, the group interpreted their experiences along the images of the body of Christ and the imago Dei .
