Abstract:Peter Higgs was a British theoretical physicist, famous for his work published in 1964, where he proposed a mechanism that can generate masses for elementary particles, while respecting gauge invariance. Half a century later, two experiments at CERN confirmed that this mechanism is realized in nature. On April 8th, we received the sad news of the passing of the great pioneer of elementary particle physics. This article is dedicated to his memory, and to the mechanism and particle that bear his name. -- Peter Higgs fue un físico teórico británico, famoso por su trabajo de 1964 donde propuso un mecanismo que puede generar masas para partículas elementales, conforme a la simetría de norma. Abstract:The Higgs boson, a fundamental scalar, was discovered at CERN in 2012 with mass 125 GeV, a mass that turned out to be a remarkable choice of Nature. In the Standard Model of particle physics, the Higgs boson is closely linked to the mechanism that gives mass to the W and Z gauge bosons that mediate the weak interactions and to the charged fermions. Following discovery of the Higgs boson, present measurements at the Large Hadron Collider are focused on testing the Higgs boson's couplings to other elementary particles, precision measurements of the Higgs boson's properties and initial investigation of the Higgs boson's self-interaction and shape of the Higgs potential. With the Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV the vacuum sits very close to the border of stable and metastable, which may be a hint to deeper physics beyond the Standard Model. The Higgs potential also plays an important role in ideas about the cosmological constant or dark energy that drives the accelerating expansion of the Universe, the mysterious dark matter that comprises about 80% of the matter component in the Universe, as well as a possible phase transition in the early Universe that might be responsible for baryogenesis. Detailed study of the Higgs boson is at the centre of the recent European Strategy for Particle Physics update. Here we review the present status of this physics and discuss the new insights expected from present and future experiments.

Abstract:In 2013 the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Francois Englert and Peter Higgs for their development in 1964 of the mass generation mechanism (the Higgs mechanism) in local gauge theories. This mechanism requires the existence of a massive scalar particle, the Higgs boson, and in 2012 the Higgs boson was finally observed at the Large Hadron Collider after being sought for almost half a century. In this pedagogical article we review the work of these Nobel recipients and discuss its implications. We approach the topic from the perspective of a dynamically generated Higgs boson that is a fermion-antifermion bound state rather than an elementary field that appears in an input Lagrangian. In particular, we emphasize the connection with the BCS theory of superconductivity. We identify the double-well Higgs potential not as a fundamental potential but as a mean-field effective Lagrangian with a dynamical Higgs boson being generated through a residual interaction that accompanies the mean-field Lagrangian. We discuss what we believe to be the key challenge raised by the discovery of the Higgs boson, namely determining whether it is elementary or composite, and suggest that the width of the Higgs boson might serve as a suitable diagnostic for discriminating between an elementary Higgs boson and a composite one.

Abstract:In 1964, a new particle was proposed by several groups to answer the question of where the masses of elementary particles come from; this particle is usually referred to as the Higgs particle or the Higgs boson. In July 2012, this Higgs particle was finally found experimentally, a feat accomplished by the ATLAS Collaboration and the CMS Collaboration using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It is the purpose of this review to give my personal perspective on a brief history of the experimental search for this particle since the '80s and finally its discovery in 2012. Besides the early searches, those at the LEP collider at CERN, the Tevatron Collider at Fermilab, and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN are described in some detail. This experimental discovery of the Higgs boson is often considered to be one of the most important advances in particle physics in the last half a century, and some of the possible implications are briefly discussed. This review is based on a talk presented by the author at the conference "OCPA8 International Conference on Physics Education and Frontier Physics", the 8th Joint Meeting of Chinese Physicists Worldwide, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, June 23-27, 2014.

Abstract:As a tribute to Steven Weinberg, we summarize the immense impact that he had on the understanding of the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking and on the physics of the Higgs boson. In particular, four landmark contributions to this field are highlighted. A first one is his early work with Goldstone and Salam on spontaneously broken continuous symmetries that paved the way to the Higgs mechanism. A second towering breakthrough is his model of leptons which later became the Standard Model of particle physics and for which he was awarded the Nobel prize with Glashow and Salam. A third seminal work is the so-called Weinberg-Linde lower bound on the Higgs boson mass that was derived from the requirement of the stability of the electroweak vacuum. Finally, we will summarize his important contributions in model-building of new physics with extended Higgs sectors and their possible impact in flavor physics and CP-violation. The historical aspects as well as the contemporary way of viewing these four major topics are summarized and their impact on today Higgs physics, and more generally particle physics, is highlighted.

Abstract:It is with the deepest sorrow that we report the death, on August 8th 1996, of Sir Nevill Mott at age 90. Sir Nevill, a distinguished and outstanding physicist whose name is known worldwide for his many contributions to condensed matter physics, was born on September 30th 1905, at a time when wave mechanics was in its infancy. During the golden days of Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory Cambridge, he was the first to apply quantum theory to the scattering of charged particles by atoms; his final work was on high-temperature superconductivity. Sir Nevill's research career thus spanned almost 70 years, thereby providing a unique and valuable link with previous generations of physicists.

We show that the contribution to the cosmological constant due to a composite Higgs boson is more tractable and under control than the contribution due to an elementary Higgs boson, and is potentially completely under control if there is an underlying conformal symmetry not just in a critical scaling matter sector, but equally in the gravity sector to which the matter sector couples.

Abstract:Nearly 50 years ago, theoretical physicists proposed that a field permeates the universe and gives energy to the vacuum. This field was required to explain why some, but not all, fundamental particles have mass. Numerous precision measurements during recent decades have provided indirect support for the existence of this field, but one crucial prediction of this theory has remained unconfirmed despite 30 years of experimental searches: the existence of a massive particle, the standard model Higgs boson. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN has now observed the production of a new particle with a mass of 126 giga-electron volts and decay signatures consistent with those expected for the Higgs particle. This result is strong support for the standard model of particle physics, including the presence of this vacuum field. The existence and properties of the newly discovered particle may also have consequences beyond the standard model itself.

Abstract:Eleven years ago, the Higgs boson was discovered at the LHC. I briefly survey the status of Higgs boson physics today and explore some of the implications for future Higgs studies. Although current experimental measurements are consistent with interpreting the observed Higgs boson as being consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model of particle physics, it is still possible that the Higgs boson is a member of an extended scalar sector that lies beyond the Standard Model. Nevertheless, an extended Higgs sector is already highly constrained. The Higgs sector can also serve as a portal to new physics beyond the Standard Model. Finally, two Higgs wishlists are assembled that merit future study and clarification at the LHC and future collider facilities now under development.

Abstract:The Higgs boson plays a central role in the Standard Model, as well as in theories which go beyond it. This article is therefore divided into two parts. The first takes s historical approach and shows how the mass problem entered weak interaction theory from the beginning and how it was solved by invoking the Higgs boson. This is followed by a construction of the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg model, again stressing the role played by the Higgs doublet. This part culminates in the Higgs boson discovery of 2012. The second part first discusses the shortcomings of the Standard Model and then touches upon the major theories which try to improve upon it, mostly with profound consequences on the Higgs sector. This is followed up by short descriptions of a number of popular extensions of the Higgs sector, and culminates in a brief introduction to effective field theory approaches to studying the Higgs sector.

Abstract:The Higgs boson, which was discovered at CERN in 2012, stands out as a remarkable elementary particle with distinct characteristics. Unlike any other observed particle, it possesses zero spin within the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Theoretical predictions had anticipated the existence of this scalar boson, postulating its interaction with the $W$ and $Z$ bosons as well as through Yukawa interactions with fermions. Furthermore the Higgs boson can interact with itself, commonly referred to as the Higgs self-interaction. In this review, the current state of experimental and theoretical investigations of Higgs boson production at the LHC and the ongoing efforts to unravel its properties are described, and an up-to-date assessment of our understanding of the Higgs sector of the SM is provided. In addition, potential links between the Higgs boson and significant unresolved questions within the realm of particle physics are presented.

Abstract:In July 2012, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider announced the observation of a Higgs boson at a mass of around 125 gigaelectronvolts. Ten years later, and with the data corresponding to the production of a 30-times larger number of Higgs bosons, we have learnt much more about the properties of the Higgs boson. The CMS experiment has observed the Higgs boson in numerous fermionic and bosonic decay channels, established its spin–parity quantum numbers, determined its mass and measured its production cross-sections in various modes. Here the CMS Collaboration reports the most up-to-date combination of results on the properties of the Higgs boson, including the most stringent limit on the cross-section for the production of a pair of Higgs bosons, on the basis of data from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 teraelectronvolts. Within the uncertainties, all these observations are compatible with the predictions of the standard model of elementary particle physics. Much evidence points to the fact that the standard model is a low-energy approximation of a more comprehensive theory. Several of the standard model issues originate in the sector of Higgs boson physics. An order of magnitude larger number of Higgs bosons, expected to be examined over the next 15 years, will help deepen our understanding of this crucial sector.
