Transmission Through Carbon Nanotubes With Polyhedral Caps

Abstract:We study electron transport between capped carbon nanotubes and a substrate, and relate the transmission probability to the local density of states in the cap. Our results show that the transmission probability mimics the behavior of the density of states at all energies except those that correspond to localized states in the cap. Close proximity of a substrate causes hybridization of the localized state. As a result, new transmission paths open from the substrate to nanotube continuum states via the localized states in the cap. Interference between various transmission paths gives rise to antiresonances in the transmission probability, with the minimum transmission equal to zero at energies of the localized states. Defects in the nanotube that are placed close to the cap cause resonances in the transmission probability, instead of antiresonances, near the localized energy levels. Depending on the spatial position of defects, these resonant states are capable of carrying a large current. These results are relevant to carbon nanotube based studies of molecular electronics and probe tip applications.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the class of K3 surfaces defined as hypersurfaces in weighted projective space, that admit a non-symplectic automorphism of non-prime order, excluding the orders 4, 8, and 12. We show that on these surfaces the Berglund–Hübsch–Krawitz mirror construction and mirror symmetry for lattice polarized K3 surfaces constructed by Dolgachev agree; that is, both versions of mirror symmetry define the same mirror K3 surface.

Abstract:We give a complete classification of finite groups acting symplectically on supersingular K3 surfaces of Artin invariant one. Using work of Dolgachev and Keum, this provides the full classification of tame finite symplectic automorphism groups on any K3 surface.

Abstract:Given X , a K3 surface admitting a symplectic automorphism τ of order 4, we describe the isometry τ∗ on H2(X,Z) . Having called Z∼ and Y∼ , respectively, the minimal resolutions of the quotient surfaces Z=X/τ2 and Y=X/τ , we also describe the maps induced in cohomology by the rational quotient maps X→Z∼,X→Y∼ and Y∼→Z∼ : With this knowledge, we are able to give a lattice‐theoretic characterization of Z∼ , and find the relation between the Néron–Severi lattices of X,Z∼ and Y∼ in the projective case. We also produce three different projective models for X,Z∼ and Y∼ , each associated to a different polarization of degree 4 on X .

On two-elementary K3 surfaces with finite automorphism group

Abstract:We study complex algebraic K3 surfaces of Picard ranks 11, 12, and 13 of finite automorphism group that admit a Jacobian elliptic fibration with a section of order two. We prove that the K3 surfaces admit a birational model isomorphic to a projective quartic hypersurface and construct geometrically the frames of all supported Jacobian elliptic fibrations. We determine the dual graphs of all smooth rational curves for these K3 surfaces, the polarizing divisors, and the embedding of the reducible fibers in each frame into the corresponding dual graph.

Abstract:Every Salem numbers of degree 4,6,8,12,14 or 16 is the dynamical degree of an automorphism of a non-projective K3 surface. We define a notion of signature of an automorphism, and use it to give a necessary and sufficient condition for Salem numbers of degree 10 and 18 to be realized as the dynamical degree of such an automorphism. The first part of the paper contains results on isometries of lattices.

Abstract:We prove that every K3 surface with automorphism group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^2$ admits an explicit birational model as a double sextic surface. This model is canonical for Picard number greater than 10. For Picard number greater than 9, the K3 surfaces in question possess a second birational model, in the form of a projective quartic hypersurface, generalizing the Inose quartic.

Abstract:Kummer surfaces are special quartic surfaces that admit $16$ nodes. The automorphisms of K3 Kummer surfaces are rich and complicated. Based on the results of Keum and Kondō, and as a continuation of the recent result by He and Yang, we lift $45$ classically known automorphisms of Kummer surfaces to pseudo-automorphisms of a threefold, the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^3$ along $6$ points and $15$ lines. We give a description of a fundamental domain of the group generated by all the known pseudo-automorphisms on this threefold.

Abstract:In this work we classify all smooth surfaces with geometric genus equal to three and an action of a group G isomorphic to (Z/2)^k such that the quotient is a plane. We find 11 families. We compute the canonical map of all of them, finding in particular a family of surfaces with canonical map of degree 16 that we could not find in the literature. We discuss the quotients by all subgroups of G finding several K3 surfaces with symplectic involutions. In particular we show that six families are families of triple K3 burgers in the sense of Laterveer.

Jacobian elliptic fibrations on K3s with a non-symplectic automorphism of order 3

Abstract:We classify Jacobian elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces with a non-symplectic automorphism $\sigma$ of order 3 according to the action of $\sigma$ on their fibres, building on work by Garbagnati and Salgado for non-symplectic involutions. We determine the possible reducible fibres types and give Weierstrass equations for Jacobian elliptic fibration which are preserved by $\sigma$. For a K3 surface $X$ with Picard number at least 12 and $\sigma$ acting trivially on $\NS X$, we apply the Kneser--Nishiyama method to find its Jacobian elliptic fibrations, and use our method to classify them in relation to every non-symplectic automorphism of order 3 in $\Aut X$.

Abstract:We show that there exists an automorphism of a projective K3 surface with Picard number $2$ such that the trace of its action on the Picard lattice is $3$. Together with a result of K. Hashimoto, J. Keum and K. Lee, we determine the set of dynamical degrees of automorphisms of projective K3 surfaces with Picard number $2$.

Moduli spaces of sheaves on Fano threefolds and K3 surfaces of genus 9

Abstract:A complex smooth prime Fano threefold $X$ of genus $9$ is related via projective duality to a quartic plane curve $\Gamma$. We use this setup to study the restriction of rank $2$ stable sheaves with prescribed Chern classes on $X$ to an anticanonical $K3$ surface $S\subset X$. Varying the threefold $X$ containing $S$ gives a rational Lagrangian fibration $$\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7) \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^3$$ with generic fibre birational to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_X(2,1,7)$ of sheaves on $X$. Moreover, we prove that this rational fibration extends to an actual fibration on a birational model $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$. In a last part, we use Bridgeland stability conditions to exhibit all $K$-trivial smooth birational models of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$, which consist in itself and $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that these models are related by a flop, and we describe the positive, movable and nef cones of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$.

Abstract:We study the symplectic action of the group (Z/2Z)^2 on a K3 surface X: we describe its action on H^2(X,Z) and the maps induced in cohomology by the rational quotient maps; we give a lattice-theoretic characterization of the resolution of singularities of the quotient X/i, where i is any of the involutions in (Z/2Z)^2. Assuming X is projective, we describe the correspondence between irreducible components of its moduli space, and those of the resolution of singularities of its quotients: this being the first description of this correspondence for a non-cyclic action, we see new phenomena, of which we provide explicit examples assuming $X$ has a polarization of degree 4.

Abstract:Let $X\subset ¶^5$ be a smooth cubic fourfold. A well known conjecture asserts that $X$ is rational if and only if there an Hodge theoretically associated K3 surface $S$. The surface $S$ can be associated to $X$ in two other different ways. If there is an equivalence of categories $\sA_X \simeq D^b(S,\alpha)$ where $\sA_X$ is the Kuznetsov component of $D^b(X)$ and $\alpha$ is a Brauer class, or if there is an isomorphism between the transcendental motive $t(X)$ and the (twisted ) transcendental motive of a K3 surface$S$. In this note we consider families of cubic fourfolds with a finite group of automorphisms and describe the cases where there is an associated K3 surface in one of the above senses.

Abstract:For certain K3 surfaces, there are two constructions of mirror symmetry that are very different. The first, known as BHK mirror symmetry, comes from the Landau-Ginzburg model for the K3 surface; the other, known as LPK3 mirror symmetry, is based on a lattice polarization of the K3 surface in the sense of Dolgachev's definition. There is a large class of K3 surfaces for which both versions of mirror symmetry apply. In this class we consider the K3 surfaces admitting a certain purely nonsymplectic automorphism of order 4, 8, or 12, and we complete the proof that these two formulations of mirror symmetry agree for this class of K3 surfaces.
