Abstract:Separators serve as critical components in batteries, bearing the responsibility for battery safety. In addition to the demand for increased flame resistance of separators, there is a growing interest in the additional functions of battery separators. In this work, a multifunctional coating integration strategy is proposed for battery separators via the versatility of metal-organic frameworks. A versatile and high-safety MIP-202@2320 composite separator is engineered and it is integrated into lithium-sulfur batteries. The presence of Cl- and the porous structure of MIP-202 impart flame-retardant characteristics and high electrolyte retention (80%) to resulting separators. Moreover, coupled with the negatively charged electron cloud formed by Cl- ions within the channels, it can selectively impede the polysulfides from migrating toward the anode, while concurrently facilitating the movement of Li+ ions. The assembled lithium-sulfur battery with MIP-202@2320 as the separator maintains an impressive 71.8% capacity retention even after 600 cycles at a 0.5C rate. This multifunctional integration strategy not only boosts the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries but also pioneers a new direction for the design of future battery separators for different kinds of batteries. The MIP-202@2320 composite separator, used in lithium-sulfur batteries, has superior safety and multifunctional properties. With Cl- ions and porous structure, it provides flame resistance and 80% electrolyte retention. The electron cloud of Cl- ions inhibits polysulfide migration but promotes Li+ ion transfer. After 600 cycles at 0.5 C rate, the battery retains 71.8% capacity. image

Abstract:A novel composite nonwoven separator exhibiting high heat resistance, high ionic conductivity and high lithium ion transference number is fabricated by a simple dip -coating and heat treatment method. The thermal stable polyimide (PI) nonwoven matrix is chosen as a mechanical support and contributes to improving the thermal shrinkage of the composite nonwoven separator (abbreviated as IACS). The cross linked poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) PAMPS(Li+) gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), lithium ion sources of a single ion conductor, is introduced into the PI nonwoven matrix and acts as a functional filler. This PAMPS GPE is proved to be able to provide internal short circuit protection, to alleviate liquid electrolyte leakage effectively, to supply more lithium ions dissociating from PAMPS (Li+) by liquid electrolyte solvent, to contribute a more stable interfacial resistance, and thus resulting in an excellent cyclability. More notably, the migration and mobility rate of anions could be hindered by the SO3 group in the PAMPS (Li+) polymer based on electrostatic interaction, giving rise to a very high lithium ion transference number. Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this paper, poly(lithium acrylate‐co‐butyl acrylate) [P(AALi‐co‐BA)] was synthesized, and a P(AALi‐co‐BA)‐coated polypropylene (PP) separator was prepared by a simple dip‐coating process. In contrast to the conventional thick, dense gel polymer coating layer, a thin P(AALi‐co‐BA) layer was formed on the PP separator, which had less influence on the pore structure of the original PP separator and was beneficial for the migration of lithium ions through the separator. Furthermore, the AALi units in the copolymer could improve the wettability of the separator, while the BA units provided the separator with strong adhesion to the electrodes. As expected, the modified separators showed good wettability, high ionic conductivity, and excellent interface stability. In addition, the cycle stability and rate performance were also improved significantly. Thermally Stable, Nano-Porous and Eco-Friendly Sodium Alginate/attapulgite Separator for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Traditional polyolefin separators are widely used in lithium-ion batteries. However, they are subject to thermal shrinkage which may lead to failure at elevated temperatures, ascribed intrinsically to their low melting point. And besides, recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries mainly focuses on precious metals, like cobalt, while other components such as separators are usually burnt or buried underground, causing severe hazards for the local environment, such as "white pollution". Therefore, to solve the aforementioned problems, we incorporated attapulgite (ATP) nanofibers, a natural mineral, into sodium alginate (SA), a biodegradable polysaccharide extracted from brown algae, through a phase inversion process, whereby a porous separator was prepared. The resulting SA/ATP separator is endowed with high thermal and chemical stability, enhanced retardancy to fire, and excellent wettability with commercial liquid electrolyte (420% uptake). Attractive cycling stability (82% capacity retention after 700 cycles) and rate capability (115 mAh g(-1) at 5 C) in LiFePO4/Li cells are achieved with such separator, additionally. Moreover, as both ingredients are nontoxic, this eco-friendly separator can degrade in soil without inducing any contamination. This work offers a viable choice to process a thermally stable, eco-friendly separator and open up new possibilities to improve the safety of batteries while alleviating the "white pollution".

Abstract:The separator plays a significant role in influencing electrochemical performances and monitoring battery safety in lithium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, suffered by commercial polyolefin separator intrinsic drawbacks of intolerable electrolyte affinity, low ionic conductivity, poor thermal stability and terrible flammability with large thermal contribution, to develop an advanced separator that meet the above requirements is imminent. In this work, an environmentally friendly bacterial cellulose and attapulgite composite separator () with low cost, high ionic conductivity and excellent flame retardant performance is designed by papermaking method. With strong adsorption energy with electrolyte, the separator exhibits extremely high electrolyte uptake and ionic conductivity, giving rise to an enhanced specific discharge capacity with higher capacity retention and an excellent rate capability with low voltage polarization at high current density. In addition, the advanced separator displays self-extinguishing characteristic after ignition, and extremely low heat and flue gas contribution can be obtained in the combustion state, indicating promoted battery safety. After being assembled into the pouch cell, the cell with separator exhibits a higher self-heating temperature and lower HRR and THR values when burning. Overall, the advanced separator has great potential to replace the polyolefin separator for attaining high performance safety batteries.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal batteries are limited by the unstable deposition structure of Li metal, triggering aggressive electrolyte consumption and presenting safety concerns. A fundamental solution regulating the Li metal deposition structure is contingent on the homogeneity of Li-ion flux at the Li-electrolyte interface and electrolyte-infiltrated separator matrix. Here, we report a rational design for a separator coupling with two functional polymers, i.e., ferroelectric terpolymer-polydopamine in a core-shell structure. A conformal polydopamine layer prevents electrolyte dissolution of the terpolymer, improves electrolyte affinity, and suppresses detrimental chemical crossover. Incorporating the high ferroelectricity of the terpolymer increases the Li-ion transference number and ionic conductivity, ensuring the homogeneity of Li-ion transport through the separator's pore network. With this bicomponent separator, stable cycling of a pouch-type full cell is achieved, comprising a thin Li metal (20 µm) anode and a layered oxide cathode under the limited electrolyte condition.

Abstract:The essential role of separators in battery safety and electrochemical performance makes it necessary to create advanced separators for next-generation energy storage systems. However, conventionally commercial polyolefin separators often have problems with poor thermal stability and insufficient electrolyte wettability, resulting in restricted battery performance and serious safety issues of lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we report a separator composed of silica (SiO2) nanoparticles and intrinsically flame-retardant copolyester P(ET-co-PN)5 electrospun nanofibers, i.e. SiO2@P(ET-co-PN)5 (SP) separator. The copolyester nanofiber's three-dimensional skeleton filled with close-packed SiO2 nanoparticles endows the separator with good mechanical performance (tensile strength of 9.8 MPa) and electrolyte wettability (electrolyte uptake of 333 %), superior heatproof and fireproof properties (no shrinkage at 250 °C, PHRR of 111.6 W/g, and THR of 9.4 kJ/g). The LiFePO4/SP/Li cells exhibit high capacity of 150.2 mAh/g, high average Coulombic efficiency of nearly 100 %, and impressive capacity retention close to 100 % after 220 cycles at 0.5 C. Notably, the LiFePO4/SP/Li cells can endure 1000 cycles at 5 C with 53 % of capacity retention and approximately 100 % of Coulombic efficiency. Moreover, it delivers an initial capacity of 148 mAh/g and retains 123.2 mAh/g over 45 cycles at 120 °C.

Abstract:The separator as an important component in Li-ion batteries faces increasing challenges with the next-generation batteries towards higher energy density and longer life. An urgent task is to simultaneously achieve fire resistance, high thermal stability and electrolyte affinity for polymeric separators. Herein, to address all these needs, we report a mussel-inspired silica-coated expanded polytetrafluoroethylene separator fabricated by a multi-step synthesis process of dopamine self-polymerization and subsequent silica in-situ self-assembly. The separator inherits the advantages of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene matrix in terms of significant fire resistance and unique porous structure, especially exhibiting superior thermal dimensional stability up to 300 °C. Additionally, the polydopamine layer acts as a double-sided tape sticking expanded polytetrafluoroethylene matrix and silica layer without any polymeric binders avoiding excessive pore blocking. More significantly, the in-situ grown silica layer combined with the polydopamine layer completely solves the Achilles' heel of polytetrafluoroethylene material to endow the separators with excellent electrolyte affinity. Benefiting from such structural uniqueness, the LiFePO4 half-cell assembled with the separator shows an enhanced discharge capacity of 157.1 mA h g−1 at 0.2C and C-rate capacity of 115.6 mA h g−1 at 5C. Therefore, this study provides inspiration for the expanded polytetrafluoroethylene-based separators facing the next-generation Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:To improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), an AlOOH-coated polyimide (API) fibrous membrane as an inorganic composite separator is developed via an electrospinning technique and a subsequent blade-coating process. Benefiting from the good thermostability of polyimide and the flame-retarding property of AlOOH, the API separator shows excellent thermal stability and flame retardance. Compared with commercial polyolefin separator, the API separator exhibits superior electrolyte wettability and electrochemical stability. The Li||LiCoO2 cell using the API separator exhibits the enhanced cycling performance and rate capability. Thus, the as-prepared API separator is promising as a new kind of inorganic composite separator for advanced LIBs with high safety.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries have attracted enormous interests recently as promising power sources. However, the safety issue associated with the employment of highly flammable liquid electrolyte impedes the further development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Recently, researchers reported the use of electrospun core-shell fiber as the battery separator consisting of polymer layer as protective shell and flame retardants loaded inside as core. In case of a typical battery shorting, the protective polymer shell melts during thermal-runaway and the flame retardants inside would be released to suppress the combustion of the electrolyte. Due to the use of a single precursor solution for electrospinning containing both polymer and flame retardants, the weight ratio of flame retardants is limited and dependent. Herein, we developed a dual-nozzle, coaxial electrospinning approach to fabricate the core-shell nanofiber with a greatly enhanced flame retardants weight percentage in the final fibers. The weight ratio of flame retardants of triphenyl phosphate in the final composite reaches over 60 wt.%. The LiFePO4-based cell using this composite nanofiber as battery separator exhibits excellent flame-retardant property without compromising the cycling stability or rate performances. In addition, this functional nanofiber can also be coated onto commercial separators instead of being used directly as separators.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries are regarded as the "Holy Grail" among varieties of energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the development and practical application of lithium metal batteries have been seriously hindered by the safety issues, which are generated from threatening lithium dendrites, flammable separator and electrolytes. In this work, a flame retardant sandwiched separator has been prepared by simply coating ammonium polyphosphate wrapped by SiO2 (2) on the surface of commercial polyolefin, thus significantly improving the safety of lithium metal batteries. The 2 separator impregnated with sufficient electrolyte exhibits excellent flame retardant performance, which manifests self-extinguishing performance. In addition, thermal stability, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical performances have been also improved obviously. More importantly, the 2 separator possesses a satisfactory ability to suppress lithium dendrites, owing to the fact that the high ionic conductivity of modified separator can promote uniform deposition of Li+ and the dangerous lithium dendrites contacted with separator are consumed by the reaction with SiO2. Therefore, a facile but effective approach can endow the multifunctional sandwiched separator with a favorable potential application for high performance and safety lithium metal batteries.

Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Separators with Dual-Asymmetric Structure for High-Performance Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Dual-asymmetric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) separators have been fabricated by thermally induced phase separation with dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2) and glycerol as mixed diluents. The separators have a porous bulk with large interconnected pores (~1.0 μm) and two surfaces with small pores (~30 nm). This dual-asymmetric porous structure endows the separators with higher electrolyte uptake amount and rapider uptake rate, as well as better electrolyte retention ability than the commercialized Celgard 2400. The separators even maintain their dimensional stability up to 160 °C, at which temperature the surface pores close up, leading to a dramatic decrease of air permeability. The electrolyte filled separators also show high ion conductivity (1.72 mS∙cm―1) at room temperature. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4)/lithium (Li) cells using these separators display superior discharge capacity and better rate performance as compared with those from the commercialized ones. The results provide new insight into the design and development of separators for high-performance lithium ion batteries with enhanced safety.

Abstract:Fabrication process of an organic‐inorganic PI/Al2O3/BM composite separator with enhanced flame‐retardant and thermal conductivity properties. This study endeavors to enhance the safety of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) by synthesizing a polyamide acid (PAA)/Al2O3 composite spinning solution using 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) and pyromellitic anhydride (PMDA) as monomers, and nano‐Al2O3 as a thermal conductivity filler. Subsequently, the PAA/Al2O3 fiber membrane is fabricated via electrostatic spinning, followed by gradient heating imidization to produce a polyimide (PI)/Al2O3 composite membrane. This membrane is then dipped into a boron nitride (BM) slurry to ultimately yield an organic–inorganic PI/Al2O3/BM composite separator with superior flame‐retardant and thermal conductivity properties. The thermal stability, flame retardancy, electrolyte wettability, mechanical integrity, and cycle rate performance of the composite membranes are rigorously evaluated. The results demonstrate that the PI/5% Al2O3/BM composite membrane exhibits the most favorable overall performance, with no shrinkage observed at 200°C and no significant changes after sustained ignition for 10 s. The incorporation of the thermal conductivity Al2O3 filler significantly enhances the heat transfer properties of the composite separator. The room temperature ionic conductivity reaches 2.786 mS cm−1 after electrolyte absorption, and the initial discharge capacity of the assembled battery is 156.28 mAhg−1. Following 100 charge/discharge cycles at 0.2C, the capacity retention rate is 97.7%, and at a discharge rate of 5C, the capacity retention rate is 74.9%.

Halloysite nanotubes enhanced polyimide/oxidized-lignin nanofiber separators for long-cycling lithium metal batteries

Abstract:The high energy density and robust cycle properties of lithium-ion batteries contribute to their extensive range of applications. Polyolefin separators are often used for the purpose of storing electrolytes, hence ensuring the efficient internal ion transport. Nevertheless, the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries is constrained by its limited interaction with electrolytes and poor capacity for cation transport. This work presents the preparation of a new bio-based nanofiber separator by combining oxidized lignin (OL) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with polyimide (PI) using an electrospinning technique. Analysis was conducted to examine and compare the structure, morphology, thermal characteristics, and EIS of the separator with those of commercially available polypropylene separator (PP). The results indicate that the PI@OL and PI-OL@ 10 % HNTs separators exhibit higher lithium ion transference number and ionic conductivity. Moreover, the use of HNTs successfully impeded the proliferation of lithium dendrites, hence exerting a beneficial impact on both the cycle performance and multiplier performance of the battery. Consequently, after undergoing 300 iterations, the battery capacity of LiFePO4|PI-OL@ 10 % HNTs|Li stays at 92.1 %, surpassing that of PP (86.8 %) and PI@OL (89.6 %). These findings indicate that this new bio-based battery separator (PI-OL@HNTs) has the great potential to serve as a substitute for the commonly used PP separator in lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Safety concerns have perennially impeded the large-scale implementation of high-energy-density storage systems. Nevertheless, because the intrinsic drawbacks of the commercial polyolefin separator are poor thermal stability and low flammability with a large thermal contribution, the development of an advanced separator that solves the above questions is imminent. In this work, gradient flame-retardant aramid nanofiber separators (T-PMIA) were synthesized by a single-step electrospinning method. Benefiting from the feature of "Aramid" fibers, plentiful multilevel beaded structure and the functional groups P and -P-O, the T-PMIA separator not only guarantees a rapid self-extinguishing feature (self-extinguishing time: 0.20 s) and impressive mechanical properties (tensile strength of up to 12.58 MPa and puncture force of 0.94 N) but also effectively suppresses the polysulfide shuttle and lithium dendrite growth. Accordingly, the T-PMIA separator still showed a stable cycling performance (maintain 901.7 mAg −1 after 100 cycles) even at high temperature (80 °C). This simple separator strategy offers a highly competitive option for the large-scale production of high-safety lithium-sulfur (LiS) batteries.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have attracted numerous attention owing to their overwhelming theoretical capacity. However, the dissolution and shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) have seriously limited the development of Li–S batteries. Herein, we rationally designed a dual-engineered nanofibrous composite separator with a Janus structure to both physically and chemically block LiPS shuttling in Li–S batteries. The separator, consisting of a cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid) (CPP) composite nanofiber matrix and the electrosprayed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) layer on the cathode side, is fabricated through a facile electrospinning–electrospray coupling approach and signed as /ZIF-8. The intrinsic narrow size and opened Lewis acid sites of ZIF-8 both confine free transport of LiPS anions. Meanwhile, the cross-linked CPP layer with abundant electronegative groups (−COOH) can shield the LiPS shuttle while ensuring the integrity of the flexible separator. Benefiting from the unique Janus structure, the /ZIF-8 separator demonstrates a high initial capacity of 1125 mAh g–1 at a good coulombic efficiency of 98% over 300 cycles at 0.1 C. Abstract:Natural polymer nanofiber-based separators with excellent thermal stability, mechanical strength , and electrolyte wettability have shown great potentials for advanced lithium ion batteries . However, there are two crucial issues to block their practical applications, including high moisture absorption and interfacial instability toward electrodes. Here, a surface coating strategy to overcome these disadvantages and promote natural polymer nanofiber-based separator performance is demonstrated. A hydrophobic polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), is adopted to coating on the surface of cyanoethyl-chitin nanofiber (CCN) separators. The as-fabricated CCN/PVDF-HFP composite separators not only exhibit much lower moisture absorption and higher interfacial instability but also retain high mechanical strength and ionic conductivity in comparison to CCN separators. The LiFePO 4 /Li cells using CCN/PVDF-HFP separators exhibit much better electrochemical cycle performance and enhanced capacity retention than that using CCN separators.
