Abstract:Halide perovskite and perovskite-like materials have emerged as very promising optoelectronic materials in the field of X-ray detection, including both direct methods and indirect methods. Due to their remarkable performances, such as strong X-ray stopping capacity and cost-effective manufacturing, the research advances of perovskite X-ray detection have achieved significant progress and attracted lots of attention worldwide. Meanwhile, perovskite based X-ray imaging systems have been successfully demonstrated as well. In this review, we will firstly introduce some fundamental principles of X-ray detection and imaging, summarize the advances of X-ray detection and imaging based on novel metal halide semiconductors and scintillators, and finally put forward some issues and outlooks.

Abstract:Lead‐free perovskites have fascinated significant research attention for direct X‐ray detection. This review describes the current research progress in the synthesis methods of lead‐free perovskites, fundamental principles, and development of applications of X‐ray detectors. In addition, the challenge and outlook for developing high‐performance lead‐free perovskite X‐ray detectors are also discussed. Lead halide perovskites have made remarkable progress in the field of radiation detection owing to the excellent and unique optoelectronic properties. However, the instability and the toxicity of lead‐based perovskites have greatly hindered its practical applications. Alternatively, lead‐free perovskites with high stability and environmental friendliness thus have fascinated significant research attention for direct X‐ray detection. In this review, the current research progress of X‐ray detectors based on lead‐free halide perovskites is focused. First, the synthesis methods of lead‐free perovskites including single crystals and films are discussed. In addition, the properties of these materials and the detectors, which can provide a better understanding and designing satisfactory devices are also presented. Finally, the challenge and outlook for developing high‐performance lead‐free perovskite X‐ray detectors are also provided.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have been intensively studied over the past years due to their attractive electronic, optical and optoelectronic properties. In spite of the phenomenally high solar-conversion efficiency achieved with perovskites, their adverse instability remains the key obstacle restricting their wider applications. These ionic crystals can be affected by many factors, such as varied temperatures, humid air, polar solvents, and electron-withdrawing/donating gases. However, under certain controlled conditions, changes in perovskite structures/compositions via, for example, phase transitions, hydration/dehydration, gas adsorption/desorption, and ion intercalation/decalation, can all be reversed, suggesting their great potential for sensing applications. In this contribution, we first overview recent investigations and mechanistic studies on the stability of metal halide perovskites under various environmental conditions. Then, we highlight the recent attempts to apply perovskites for the detection of temperature change, humidity, gases, solvents and ions. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future opportunities for developing sensing systems based on metal halide perovskites.

Abstract:Abstract Halide lead perovskites have attracted increasing attention in recent years for ionizing radiation detection due to their strong stopping power, defect-tolerance, large mobility-lifetime ( μτ ) product, tunable bandgap and simple single crystal growth from low-cost solution processes. In this review, we start with the requirement of material properties for high performance ionizing radiation detection based on direct detection mechanisms for applications in X-ray imaging and γ-ray energy spectroscopy. By comparing the performances of halide perovskites radiation detectors with current state-of-the-art ionizing radiation detectors, we show the promising features and challenges of halide perovskites as promising radiation detectors.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite for radiation detection still faces significant challenges despite its exciting progress. The main issues which hinder further development are the toxicity problem of lead and the intrinsic instability for volatile organic parts in lead-based perovskites. Therefore, searching for low-toxic and intrinsically stable perovskite materials have drawn a great attention from the public. In this review, lead-free perovskites are divided into two types: double perovskites type as A 2 M I M II X 6 and low-dimensional perovskites type as A 3 W 2 X 9 . The synthesis methods of these lead-free perovskites are discussed and the performance on X-ray detection are accordingly summarized. Moreover, a brief outlook on the future development of lead-free perovskites in radiation detection is proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Lead (Pb) halide perovskites have witnessed highly promising achievements for high-efficiency solar cells, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and photo/radiation detectors due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. However, compound stability and Pb toxicity are still two main obstacles towards the commercialization of halide perovskite-based devices. Therefore, it is of substantial interest to search for non-toxic candidates with comparable photophysical characteristics. Metal-halide double perovskites (MHDPs), A 2 BBʹX 6 , are recently booming as promising alternatives for Pb-based halide-perovskites for their non-toxicity and significantly enhanced chemical and thermodynamic stability. Moreover, this family exhibits rich combinatorial chemistry with tuneable optoelectronic properties and thus a great potential for a broad range of optoelectronic/electronic applications. Herein, we present a comprehensive review of the MHDPs synthesized so far, and classified by their optical and electronic properties. We systematically generalize their electronic structure by both theoretical and experimental efforts to prospect the relevant optoelectronic properties required by different applications. The progress of the materials in various applications is explicated in view of the material structure-function relationship. Finally, a perspective outlook to improve the physical and optoelectronic properties of the materials is proposed aiming at fostering their future development and applications.

Abstract:The unique energy conversion characteristics of metal halide perovskite (MHP) materials, which can be hardly observed in conventional semiconductors and metal oxides, have boosted their promising application in detecting and sensing devices, in addition to their famous optoelectronic functions. Herein, the recent progresses of the state‐of‐the‐art applications of MHPs are focused on X‐ray diagnosis, cardiac detection, bionic retina, artificial synapse, cell imaging, and others. Owing to their emerging electrical properties with multifield coupled response effect, and photoelectric, electro‐optical, and all‐optical conversion functions, MHPs demonstrate promising prospects in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. As functional optoelectronic materials, MHPs provide a new platform for future biomedical devices. This review article is expected to present the current status on, and further promote the application of MHP materials in detecting and sensing devices. Organometal halide perovskites present promising functions for detecting and sensing in biomedical applications due to their excellent energy conversion features. New‐generation detecting and sensing devices and materials are emerging with the fast development of metal halide perovskites, which demonstrate excellent functional features in X‐ray detection, medical sensing, bionic retina, artificial synapses, cell imaging, etc.

Abstract:Various synthesis methods are used to prepare metal perovskites with excellent properties, leading to their extensive use in nanotechnology, chemistry, environmental protection, and material science, especially in solar cells and sensors. The design of perovskite‐based electrochemical sensors with low detection limit and high sensitivity is believed to bring new insight into the detection of biomolecules. Perovskite materials with unique crystal structure have developed rapidly in recent years owing to their special physical and chemical properties, such as high light absorption and extraordinary electrocatalytic properties. Metal halide perovskites are quite attractive in various fields because of their simple manufacturing process, adjustable band gap, good charge transfer performance, and high theoretical photoelectric conversion efficiency. Therefore, perovskite oxides mixed with metal elements become ideal samples for studying the surface and catalytic performance of catalysts. In this review, various metal perovskites are clearly classified and introduced according to the corresponding synthesis methods, including hydrothermal method, sol–gel method, and high‐temperature solid phase, as well as coprecipitation. The excellent properties of perovskite make it extensively used in nanotechnology, chemistry, environmental protection, and material science, especially in solar cells and sensors. In particular, the nanosized perovskite materials are becoming more and more popular in sensors, which was reviewed in detail here. Most importantly, the design of electrochemical sensors using perovskite nanomaterials with low detection limit and high sensitivity will bring new insight into the detection of biomolecules. Both challenges and prospects of metal perovskites were discussed for promoting the development of biosensors in the end.

Abstract:Recently, perovskites have shown great promise as a semiconductor material with the advantages of low-temperature fabrication, controllable band gap, and high carrier lifetime. In the field of X-ray detection, a number of workers have developed green and stable and efficient lead-free halide chalcogenides in pursuit of stable performance and biological safety. This article has done the following three works: It introduces the basic principles of X-ray detection briefly. The outstanding works that have been done are summarized in terms of sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and detection limit, and their laws are summarized. The optoelectronic properties of lead-free halide perovskites are summarized, the prospects of lead-free perovskites in the field of X-ray detection are foreseen.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have excited tremendous research interests due to their extraordinary photovoltaic and optoelectronic performance. Cs2SnI6 has emerged as a promising lead-free perovskite in advanced optoelectronics due to its high stability, appropriate bandgap, and high absorption coefficient. The performance of two-dimensional (2D) Cs2SnI6-based photodetectors is limited as compared to lead-based perovskites. Here, we report a simple strategy for incorporating aliovalent metal ions (nickel and zinc) for doping or passivation of perovskites to improve their performance. Aliovalent metal ions are employed to break the inherent dark transition of the 2D Cs2SnI6, greatly increasing photoluminescence by two orders of magnitude than pristine Cs2SnI6. Density function calculation reveals the n-type doping of nickel ions without introducing any deep trap states. We further demonstrate that the surface passivation of 2D Cs2SnI6 by zinc ions can greatly reduce surface trap/defect density. Aliovalent metal ion-incorporated Cs2SnI6 perovskites exhibit broadband detection, high responsivity (1.6 × 103 A W–1, for Ni-incorporated Cs2SnI6) and high detectivity (1.56 × 1013 Jones, for Zn-incorporated Cs2SnI6). These results will prompt research on the influence of metal ions in perovskite materials that may afford novel properties for next-generation optoelectronics.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite (LHP) has been widely researched in the photovoltaic field due to its highly attractive optoelectronic properties. Among the LHP‐based devices, the detectivity of the photodetector is as high as 1015 Jones. However, their practical application is limited by the toxicity of lead in perovskite and the inherent instability induced by the perovskite structure against moisture, heat, and light. To address these issues, tremendous efforts have been made to replace Pb2+ with other environmentally friendly metal cations such as Sn2+, Bi3+, Cu2+, Sb3+, and Ge2+. Thus, considerable breakthroughs in device performance and stability using lead‐free metal halide perovskite (LFMHP) have been made in recent years. In this review, the synthesis methods and strategies are focused for enhancing the material quality and photoelectric properties of LFMHPs and the recent research progress of LFMHP‐based photodetectors is summarized. This research provides some promising perspectives for high‐performance LFMHP photodetectors to achieve a broader range of practical applications in the future.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have emerged as a promising class of materials for radiation detection due to their high atomic numbers and thus high radiation absorption, tunable and efficient luminescent properties and simple solution processability. Traditional MHP scintillators, however, suffer from environmental degradation, spurring interest in perovskite-polymer composites. This paper reviews recent developments in these composites tailored for scintillator applications. It discusses various synthesis methods, including solution-based and mechanochemical techniques, that enable the formation of composites with enhanced performance metrics such as light yield, detection limit, and environmental stability. The review also covers the remaining challenges and opportunities in fabrication techniques and performance metric evaluations of this class of materials. By offering a comprehensive overview of current research and future perspectives, this paper underscores the potential of perovskite-polymer composites to revolutionize the field of radiation detection.

Abstract:Despite the significant advancements in perovskite‐based optoelectronic devices, challenges related to stability, scalability, and toxicity remain focal points of research. To address these challenges, perovskite core/shell heterocrystals including silicon, metal oxides, chalcogenides, and Pb‐free perovskites have garnered considerable attention. This review delves into the latest developments in core/shell heterocrystals and explores their potential applications, ranging from photodetectors to biomedical technologies. In recent years, the performance of metal halide perovskite (MHP)‐based detectors (photon, biomedical, and X‐ray detection) has significantly improved, resulting in higher carrier mobilities, longer carrier diffusion lengths, and excellent absorption coefficients. However, the widespread adoption of halide perovskites has been hindered by issues related to their stability and toxicity. Various strategies have been adopted to address these challenges, focusing on enhancing ambient stability and reducing toxicity by encapsulating MHPs within stable and robust host materials, such as silicon compounds, metal oxides, chalcogenides, and lead‐free perovskites. This review focuses on recent developments in hybrid nanostructure‐based detectors (photon, biomedical, and X‐ray), particularly core/shell architectures, and provides a comprehensive analysis of techniques for mitigating degradation due to light and oxygen exposure, UV irradiance, and thermal effects. This review enhances the understanding of current advancements in core/shell‐based detectors.

Abstract:The electronic age demands the development of high-performing thin-film semiconductors that are low-cost and scalable. Lead (Pb)-based halide perovskites (LHPs) have proven to be successful in this regard, but their use is limited by environmental and health concerns related to lead toxicity. Lead-free halide compounds offer a promising alternative, with vast compositional space for fine-tuning properties to meet specific application requirements. These materials also offer opportunities for the deliberate introduction of functional properties, providing unparalleled control over their targeted applications. While the call for lead-free halide materials as alternatives to LHPs is echoed several times, the performance of these compounds remains modest as compared to the exponential growth of LHPs. Nevertheless, the compositional space of lead-free halide materials is huge, even bigger than LHPs as they are not restricted by the structural constrains of perovskite structure. This brings their huge potential in future technologies, which are remains untapped as of now. As a meta-analysis, we compare and combine the findings of previously published studies, to assess the optoelectronic properties of ternary and quaternary halide materials and their applications in devices. It details the structures of the various lead-free halide materials including perovskites, perovskite-derivative, and non-perovskites structures and describes the role of dimensionality and composition on their optoelectronic properties. To end, the challenges and perspectives of lead-free materials and devices are given. We hope this review will provide new insights for designing metal halide materials from the viewpoint of the modulation of the basic building blocks metal halide coordination. The future of electronics lies in the hands of lead-free halide materials, and we hope this review will inspire further research in this field.

Abstract:Recently, halide perovskite colloidal quantum dots (QDs) or nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as promising candidates for high-performance and low-cost photodetectors due to their distinct advantages like low-temperature solution processability, variable bandgap, large light absorption, and superior phase stability. However, issues such as toxicity of lead element have greatly hindered the possibility of their practical applications. Therefore, many researchers chose low-toxic or nontoxic elements to replace lead element and made photodetector applications a reality. Herein, we firstly aimed to give an introduction of the preparation of lead-based and lead-free perovskite QDs/NCs, including the different synthesis methods, bandgap engineering, and post-synthetic treatments. And then, we reviewed the recent progresses of lead-based and lead-free halide perovskite QDs/NCs photoconductive photodetectors. Finally, we presented the major challenges that need to be addressed in the future and the outlooks of perovskite QDs/NCs photodetectors. It is hoped that the summary of the research status of perovskite QDs/NCs photodetectors will put forward to the development of this field.
Contact Engineering of Halide Perovskites: Gold is Not Good Enough; Metalloid is Better

Abstract:The operation stability of halide perovskite devices is the critical issue that impedes their commercialization. The main reasons are that the ambient H2 O molecules can easily deteriorate the perovskites, while the metal electrodes react in different degrees with the perovskites. Herein, one kind of new electrode, the metalloids, is reported, which are much more stable than the conventional noble metals as electrical contacts for halide perovskites. The degradation mechanism of halide perovskites with noble metal electrodes is carefully studied and compared with the metalloid electrodes. It is found that the iodide ions can easily halogenate Cu and Ag in halide perovskites. Although Au is almost not halogenated, it can also decompose the perovskite film. On the contrary, after long-term storage, the metalloid electrodes remain intact on the perovskite film without any degradation. In addition, the long-time operation stability of the perovskite devices with metalloid electrodes is much higher than that of noble metals. First-principles calculations confirm the exceptional stability of the metalloid electrodes.This work explores the ultra-stable electrodes for halide perovskites, paving the way to the large-scale deployment of perovskite-based electronic devices.
Halide Perovskites and Their Derivatives for Efficient, High-Resolution Direct Radiation Detection: Design Strategies and Applications

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed a rapid rise in the performance of optoelectronic devices based on lead-halide perovskites (LHPs). The large mobility-lifetime products and defect tolerance of these materials, essential for optoelectronics, also make them well-suited for radiation detectors, especially given the heavy elements present, which is essential for strong X-ray and γ-ray attenuation. Over the past decade, LHP thick films, wafers, and single crystals have given rise to direct radiation detectors that have outperformed incumbent technologies in terms of sensitivity (reported values up to 3.5 × 106 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 ), limit of detection (directly measured values down to 1.5 nGyair s-1 ), along with competitive energy and imaging resolution at room temperature. At the same time, lead-free perovskite-inspired materials (e.g., methylammonium bismuth iodide), which have underperformed in solar cells, have recently matched and, in some areas (e.g., in polarization stability), surpassed the performance of LHP detectors. These advances open up opportunities to achieve devices for safer medical imaging, as well as more effective non-invasive analysis for security, nuclear safety, or product inspection applications. Herein, the principles behind the rapid rises in performance of LHP and perovskite-inspired material detectors, and how their properties and performance link with critical applications in non-invasive diagnostics are discussed. The key strategies to engineer the performance of these materials, and the important challenges to overcome to commercialize these new technologies are also discussed.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites with excellent optoelectronic properties have attracted extensive attention and made amazing progress for X-ray detectors and imaging. However, lead is highly toxic to humans, animals and ecosystems, posing a great safety concern to its commercial application. It has become an urgent need to develop stable and environment-friendly lead-free alternatives. In this review, we summarize recent progress in lead-free halide perovskites (LFHPs) and derivatives toward X-ray detectors and imaging. First, we introduce the working principle of X-ray detectors and the key figure of merit in direct and indirect detection processes. In addition, we summarize state-of-the-art lead-free halide perovskites preparation methods. Furthermore, we comprehensively discuss the structural dimensions, optoelectronic properties of lead-free halide perovskites and their recent advances in X-ray detection and imaging. Meanwhile, the stabilities of LFHPs-based X-ray detectors are discussed. Finally, we outline several main issues of state-of-the-art LFHPs-based X-ray detectors and provide prospects to overcome these limitations.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite has become a promising candidate for high-performance photodetectors (PDs) due to its attractive optical and electrical properties, such as high optical absorption coefficient, high carrier mobility, and long carrier diffusion length. However, the presence of highly toxic lead in these devices has limited their practical applications and even hindered their progress toward commercialization. Therefore, the scientific community has been committed to searching for low-toxic and stable perovskite-type alternative materials. Lead-free double perovskite, which is still in the preliminary stage of exploration, has achieved inspiring results in recent years. In this review, we mainly focus on two types of lead-free double perovskite based on different Pb substitution strategies, including A2M(I)M(III)X6 and A2M(IV)X6. We review the research progress and prospects of lead-free double perovskite photodetectors in the past three years. More importantly, from the perspective of optimizing the inherent defects in materials and improving device performance, we propose some feasible pathways and make an encouraging perspective for the future development of lead-free double perovskite photodetectors.
