Abstract:The kagome lattice is host to flat bands, topological electronic structures, Van Hove singularities, and diverse electronic instabilities, providing an ideal platform for realizing highly tunable electronic states. Here, we report soft and mechanical point-contact spectroscopy (SPCS and MPCS) studies of the kagome superconductors KV3Sb5 and CsV3Sb5. Compared to the superconducting transition temperature T-c from specific heat and electrical resistance measurements, significantly enhanced values of T-c are observed via the zero-bias conductance of SPCS, which become further enhanced in MPCS measurements. While the differential conductance curves from SPCS can be described by a two-gap s-wave model, a single s-wave gap reasonably captures the MPCS data, likely due to a diminishing spectral weight of the other gap. The enhanced superconductivity probably arises from local strain caused by the point contact, which also leads to two-gap or single-gap behaviors observed in different point contacts. Our results demonstrate highly strain-sensitive superconductivity in kagome metals CsV3Sb5 and KV3Sb5, which may be harnessed in the manipulation of possible Majorana zero modes.

Nanoscale strain manipulation of smectic susceptibility in kagome superconductors

Abstract:Exotic quantum solids can host electronic states that spontaneously break rotational symmetry of the electronic structure, such as electronic nematic phases and unidirectional charge density waves (CDWs). When electrons couple to the lattice, uniaxial strain can be used to anchor and control this electronic directionality. Here we reveal an unusual impact of strain on unidirectional "smectic" CDW orders in kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy. We discover local decoupling between the smectic electronic director axis and the direction of anisotropic strain. While the two are generally aligned along the same direction in regions of small CDW gap, the two become misaligned in regions where CDW gap is the largest. This in turn suggests nanoscale variations in smectic susceptibility, which we attribute to a combination of local strain and electron correlation strength. Overall, we observe an unusually high decoupling rate between the smectic electronic director of the 3-state Potts order and anisotropic strain, revealing weak smecto-elastic coupling in the CDW phase of kagome superconductors. This is phenomenologically different from the extensively studied nemato-elastic coupling in the Ising nematic phase of Fe-based superconductors, providing a contrasting picture of how strain can control electronic unidirectionality in different families of quantum materials.

Abstract:Fermi-surface fluctuations and lattice instabilities in the two-dimensional metallic kagome superconductor CsV_{3}Sb_{5} are elucidated via polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a weak electronic continuum in high-quality samples marks the crossover into the charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered phase, while impurity-rich samples promote strong defect-induced electronic scattering processes that affect the coherence of the CDW phase. CDW-induced phonon anomalies appear below T_{CDW}, with emergent C2 symmetry for one of the CDW amplitude modes, alluding to nematicity. In conjunction with symmetry-breaking lattice distortions, a kinklike hardening of the A_{1g} phonon energy at T_{CDW} signifies a concerted interplay of electronic correlations and electron-phonon coupling in the exotic CDW order.
Frustrated Altermagnetism and Charge Density Wave in Kagome Superconductor CsCr3Sb5

Abstract:Using first-principles density-functional calculations, we investigate the electronic structure and magnetism of the kagome superconductor CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$. At the ambient pressure, its ground state is found to be $4\times2$ altermagnetic spin-density-wave (SDW) pattern, with an averaged effective moment of $\sim$1.7$\mu_B$ per chromium atom. The magnetic long range order is coupled to the lattice structure, generating 4$a_0$ structural modulation. However, multiple competing SDW phases are present and energetically very close, suggesting strong magnetic fluctuation and frustration. The electronic states near the Fermi level are dominated by Cr-3d orbitals, and flat band or van Hove singularities are away from the Fermi level. When external pressure is applied, the energy differences between competing orders and the structural modulations are suppressed by external pressure. The magnetic fluctuation remains present and important at high pressure because the non-magnetic phase is unstable up to 30 GPa. In addition, a bonding state between Cr-3d$_{xz}$ and Sb$^{\mathrm{II}}$-p$_z$ quickly acquires dispersion and eventually becomes metallic around 5 GPa, leading to a Lifshitz transition. Our findings strongly support unconventional superconductivity in the CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$ compound above 5 GPa, and suggest crucial role of magnetic fluctuations in the pairing mechanism.

Abstract:Tunable quantum materials hold great potential for applications. Of special interest are materials in which small lattice strain induces giant electronic responses. The kagome compounds AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) provide a testbed for such singular electronic states. In this study, through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we provide comprehensive spectroscopic measurements of the giant responses induced by compressive and tensile strains on the charge-density-wave (CDW) order parameter and high-order van Hove singularity (HO-VHS) in CsV3Sb5. We observe a tripling of the CDW gap magnitudes with ~1% strain, accompanied by the changes of both energy and mass of the saddle-point fermions. Our results reveal an anticorrelation between the unconventional CDW order parameter and the mass of a HO-VHS, and highlight the role of the latter in the superconducting pairing. The giant electronic responses uncover a rich strain tunability of the versatile kagome system in studying quantum interplays under lattice perturbations.

The Interplay Between Anomalous Metallic and Superconducting States Tuned by Disorder in Thin Flakes of Kagome Metal KV3Sb5

Abstract:Recently, V-based Kagome metals have attracted intense attention due to the coexistence of their topological nontrivial electronic structure, charge density wave, and superconductivity. Here, we report the fabrication and physical investigations of single-crystalline thin flakes of the Kagome metal KV3Sb5. For samples with a thickness of 22 +/- 2 nm , Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type behavior is revealed by the temperature dependent resistance and voltage-current data, which indicates the presence of two-dimensional superconductivity. Meanwhile, a temperature-independent resistance behavior is observed in a wide field region, supplying the hallmark of the anomalous metallic (AM) state. Importantly, by comparing the interplay between the superconducting and AM states of two samples with different levels of disorder, a striking competitive evolution with the external field between these two states is uncovered.
Relaxation and a non-local, resistivity boundary layer in superconductors

Abstract:Superconductors like other solids cannot relax instantaneously from thermally excited (disturbed) states to thermodynamic equilibrium. In this paper, relaxation of a multi-filamentary and of a thin film superconductor from thermal excitations is simulated. Absorption of radiation or, under conductor movement, release and transformation of mechanical tension to thermal energy are examples. The paper applies numerical simulations of superconductor energy states, as many-particle systems, under basic thermodynamic and standard, multi-component heat transfer principles (solid conduction plus radiation in thin films). A recently described microscopic stability model and application of a traditional, continuum cell model allows to explain curvature of the resistance vs. temperature excursion below critical temperature, TCrit, and suggests an alternative to standard explanation of increased electrical conductivity at temperature exceeding TCrit. A non-local, resistivity boundary layer (a temperature uncertainty) is observed near critical temperature within which the resistivity curve smoothly approaches, from the superconducting state, the normal conduction resistivity. Fluctuations in a superconducting quantum critical point of multi-band metals

Abstract:In multi-band metals quasi-particles arising from different atomic orbitals coexist at a common Fermi surface. Superconductivity in these materials may appear due to interactions within a band (intra-band) or among the distinct metallic bands (inter-band). Here we consider the suppression of superconductivity in the intra-band case due to hybridization. The fluctuations at the superconducting quantum critical point (SQCP) are obtained calculating the response of the system to a fictitious space and time dependent field, which couples to the superconducting order parameter. The appearance of superconductivity is related to the divergence of a generalized susceptibility. For a single band superconductor this coincides with the \textit{Thouless criterion}. For fixed chemical potential and large hybridization, the superconducting state has many features in common with breached pair superconductivity with unpaired electrons at the Fermi surface. The T=0 phase transition from the superconductor to the normal state is in the universality class of the density-driven Bose-Einstein condensation. For fixed number of particles and in the strong coupling limit, the system still has an instability to the normal sate with increasing hybridization.

Unconventional gapping behavior in a kagome superconductor

Abstract:Determining the types of superconducting order in quantum materials is a challenge, especially when multiple degrees of freedom, such as bands or orbitals, contribute to the fermiology and when superconductivity competes, intertwines, or coexists with other symmetry-breaking orders. Here, we study the Kagome-lattice superconductor CsV3Sb5, in which multiband superconductivity coexists with a charge order that substantially reduces the compound's space group symmetries. Through a combination of thermodynamic as well as electrical and thermal transport measurements, we uncover two superconducting regimes with distinct transport and thermodynamic characteristics, while finding no evidence for a phase transition separating them. Thermodynamic measurements reveal substantial quasiparticle weight in a high-temperature regime. At lower temperatures, this weight is removed via the formation of a second gap. The two regimes are sharply distinguished by a pronounced enhancement of the upper critical field at low temperatures and by a switch in the anisotropy of the longitudinal thermal conductivity as a function of in-plane magnetic field orientation. We argue that the band with a gap opening at lower temperatures continues to host low-energy quasiparticles, possibly due to a nodal structure of the gap. Taken together, our results present evidence for band-selective superconductivity with remarkable decoupling of the (two) superconducting gaps. The commonly employed multiband scenario, whereby superconductivity emerges in a primary band and is then induced in other bands appears to fail in this unconventional kagome superconductor. Instead, band-selective superconducting pairing is a paradigm that seems to unify seemingly contradicting results in this intensely studied family of materials and beyond.

Abstract:Superconductivity in a highly correlated kagome system has been theoretically proposed for years (refs. 1-5), yet the experimental realization is hard to achieve6,7. The recently discovered vanadium-based kagome materials8, which exhibit both superconductivity9-11 and charge-density-wave orders12-14, are nonmagnetic8,9 and weakly correlated15,16. Thus these materials are unlikely to host the exotic superconductivity theoretically proposed. Here we report the discovery of a chromium-based kagome metal, CsCr3Sb5, which is contrastingly featured with strong electron correlations, frustrated magnetism and characteristic flat bands close to the Fermi level. Under ambient pressure, this kagome metal undergoes a concurrent structural and magnetic phase transition at 55 K, with a stripe-like 4a0 structural modulation. At high pressure, the phase transition evolves into two transitions, possibly associated with charge-density-wave and antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave orderings. These density-wave-like orders are gradually suppressed with pressure and, remarkably, a superconducting dome emerges at 3.65-8.0 GPa. The maximum of the superconducting transition temperature, Tcmax = 6.4 K, appears when the density-wave-like orders are completely suppressed at 4.2 GPa, and the normal state exhibits a non-Fermi-liquid behaviour, reminiscent of unconventional superconductivity and quantum criticality in iron-based superconductors17,18. Our work offers an unprecedented platform for investigating superconductivity in correlated kagome systems.

Abstract:Rapid development of micro- and nanofabrication methods have provoked interest and enabled experimental studies of electronic properties of a vast class of (sub)micrometer-size solid state systems. Mesoscopic-size hybrid structures, containing superconducting elements, have become interesting objects for basic research studies and various applications, ranging from medical and astrophysical sensors to quantum computing. One of the most important aspects of physics, governing the behavior of such systems, is the finite concentration of nonequilibrium quasiparticles, present in a superconductor even well below the temperature of superconducting transition. Those nonequilibrium excitations might limit the performance of a variety of superconducting devices, like superconducting qubits, single-electron turnstiles and microrefrigerators. On the contrary, in some applications, like detectors of electromagnetic radiation, the nonequilibrium state is essential for their operation. It is therefore of vital importance to study the mechanisms of nonequilibrium quasiparticle relaxation in superconductors of mesoscopic dimensions, where the whole structure can be considered as an `interface'. At early stages of research the problem was mostly studied in relatively massive systems and at high temperatures close to the critical temperature of a superconductor. We review the recent progress in studies of nonequilibrium quasiparticle relaxation in superconductors including the low temperature limit. We also discuss the open physical questions and perspectives of development in the field.

Enhancement of the superconductivity and quantum metallic state in the thin film of superconducting Kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$

Abstract: Recently V-based Kagome metal attracted intense attention due to the emergence of superconductivity in the low temperature. Here we report the fabrication and physical investigations of the high quality single-crystalline thin films of the Kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$. For the sample with the thickness of about 15 nm, the temperature dependent resistance reveals a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type behavior, indicating the presence of two-dimensional superconductivity. Compared with the bulk sample, the onset transition temperature $T^{onset}_{c}$ and the out-of-plane upper critical field $H_{c2}$ are enhanced by 15\% and more than 10 times respectively. Moreover, the zero-resistance state is destroyed by a magnetic field as low as 50 Oe. Meanwhile, the temperature-independent resistance is observed in a wide field region, which is the hallmark of quantum metallic state. Our results provide evidences for the existence of unconventional superconductivity in this material.
Electronic Structure and Spin-Lattice Relaxation in Superconducting Vortex States on the Kagome Lattice Near Van Hove Filling

Abstract:Starting from a tight-binding model on the kagome lattice near the van Hove filling, the superconducting (SC) properties are investigated self-consistently by using the Bogoliubov???de Gennes equations with the consideration of the inequivalent third-neighbor (TN) bonds. Near the van Hove filling, the most favorable SC pairings are found to derive from the electrons belonging to the same sublattice sites, including the on-site s-wave and the spin-singlet/spin-triplet TN pairings. The inequivalent TN bonds will result in multiple SC components with different orbital angular momenta for the TN SC pairings. Whereas the density of states and the temperature (T ) dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate (T1???1) exhibit distinct line shapes in the SC state for the three cases, a peak structure in the T dependence of T1???1 can be found for all of them just below Tc as a result of the van Hove singularity, even though the SC gap has nodes. The effects of magnetic vortices on the low-energy excitations and on the T dependence of T ???1 1 with the implications of the results are also discussed for all the cases.
Sublinear transport in Kagome metals: Interplay of Dirac cones and Van Hove singularities

Abstract:Kagome metals are known to host Dirac fermions and saddle point Van Hove singularities near Fermi level. With the minimal two-pocket model (Dirac cone + Van Hove singularity), we propose a semiclassical theory to explain the experimentally observed sublinear resistivity in Ni$_3$In and other Kagome metals. We derive the full semiclassical description of kinetic phenomena using Boltzmann equation, and demonstrate that internode electron-electron interaction leads to sublinear in $T$ scaling for both electrical and thermal transport at low temperatures. At higher temperatures above the Dirac node chemical potential, thermal and electric current dissipate through distinct scattering channels, making a ground for Wiedemann-Franz law violation.

Abstract:The existence of rich Fermiology in anomalous metal phase in exotic superconductors has attracted considerable interests, as exemplified in copper, iron-based, and intermetallic frustrated kagome-based compounds. A common feature in these cases is pseudo-gap opening or long-range lattice/electronic ordering above superconducting critical temperature Tc. As yet developed area is the potential existence of exotic Fermiology in superconducting transition metal oxides on a geometrically frustrated lattice. Here, we focus on the spinel oxide superconductor LiTi2O4, which can be viewed as the hole-doped side of the orbital ordered 3d1 Mott system on the Ti-derived pyrochlore frustrated network. By the in-situ combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and epitaxial thin film growth, we discovered the abrupt flattening of near Fermi energy dispersion below the characteristic temperature T* ~ 150 K. While the emergent negative thermal expansion below T* strongly supports a distinct phase at low-temperature, absence of energy gap opening, splitting/folding of bands, nor long-range lattice distortion are seen across T*. We propose that the competition between growing instability towards orbital ordering and its inherent geometric frustration in the Ti-pyrochlore network results in a new quantum state of matter with robust high entropic nature below T*. Our findings collectively point to a unique Fermiology in frustrated three-dimensional transition metal oxides, and its connection to superconductivity below Tc is open as an interesting future challenge. Also, a potential guideline is unexpectedly provided for designing zero thermal expansion metal to develop future solid-state devices.

Magnetoresistance hysteresis in the superconduting state of Kagome CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

Abstract:The hysteresis of magnetoresistance observed in superconductors is of great interest due to its potential connection with unconventional superconductivity. In this study, we perform electrical transport measurements on Kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ nanoflakes and uncover unusual hysteretic behaviour of magnetoresistance in the superconducting state. This hysteresis can be induced by applying either a large DC or AC current at temperatures ($T$) well below the superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$). As $T$ approaches $T_{\rm c}$, similar weak hysteresis is also detected by applying a small current. Various scenarios are discussed, with particular focus on the effects of vortex pinning and the presence of time-reversal-symmtery-breaking superconducting domains. Our findings support the latter, hinting at chiral superconductivity in Kagome superconductors.

Pressure-dependent Electronic Superlattice in the Kagome-Superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

Abstract:We present a high-resolution single crystal x-ray diffraction study of kagome-superconductor \cvs, exploring its response to variations in pressure and temperature. We discover that at low temperatures, the structural modulations of the electronic superlattice, commonly associated with charge-density-wave order, undergo a transformation around $p \sim$ 0.7 GPa from the familiar $2\times2$ pattern to a long-range-ordered modulation at wavevector $q=(0, 3/8, 1/2)$. Our observations align with inferred changes in the CDW pattern from prior transport and nuclear-magnetic-resonance studies, providing new insights into these transitions. Interestingly, the pressure-induced variations in the electronic superlattice correlate with two peaks in the superconducting transition temperature as pressure changes, hinting that fluctuations within the electronic superlattice could be key to stabilizing superconductivity. However, our findings contrast with the minimal pressure dependency anticipated by ab initio calculations of the electronic structure. They also challenge prevailing scenarios based on a Peierls-like nesting mechanism involving van Hove singularities.

Abstract:The intertwining between competing degrees of freedom, anisotropy, and frustration-induced quantum fluctuations offers an ideal ground to realize exotic quantum phenomena in the rare-earth-based kagome lattice. The magnetic susceptibility reveals the presence of two energy scales in agreement with the INS results. The higher energy state is dominated by CEF excitations, where the lowest Kramers ground-state doublet is well separated from the excited state suggesting that the compound realizes a low-energy state at low temperatures. The second energy scale is witnessed via thermodynamic results that reveal an anomaly at 0.3 K typical of a phase transition, which is attributed to the presence of complex magnetic ordering phenomena. The broad maximum in the specific heat well above 0.3 K indicates the presence of short-range spin correlations that is corroborated by muon spin relaxation rate results. The isothermal magnetization reveals a field-induced 1/3 magnetization plateau at low temperatures. muSR relaxation rate experiments, on the other hand, neither show the signature of a phase transition nor spin-freezing down to 34 mK. The ZF muSR relaxation is governed by the Orbach process and reveals the presence of a fluctuating state owing to the depopulation of crystal field levels reflected as a constant value of relaxation rate in the temperature range 0.4-10 K. NMR results indicate the presence of fluctuating Nd3+ moments down to 1.8 K consistent with muSR experiments. Our comprehensive results reveal that a field-induced quantum critical phenomenon is at play in this frustrated kagome magnet and enable us to construct a phase diagram exemplifying the proximity effect of competing magnetic states. This sets the stage to investigate the broad RE3BWO9 family of rare-earth kagome magnets promising to host exotic quantum states driven by spin-orbit coupling and geometrical frustration.
