Abstract:Significant enhancement in the luminescence and superior photophysical properties of CH3NH3PbBr3 thin films prepared via simple single step spin coating process involving a novel additive mediated solvent extraction step is reported. This process results in significantly lower disorder in CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskites with Urbach energies reducing from approximate to 35 to approximate to 17 meV, which is the lowest reported value to date. The additive mediated process also results in a remarkable improvement in the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) from 1% to 30%. Coupled with the overall increase in surface roughness, a significant increase in the internal PLQY from 7% to 77% is estimated, indicating the superior quality of the treated thin films. The resultant high quality CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskites with remarkable photophysical properties can be used in realizing highly efficient optoelectronic devices. Highly efficient light emitting diodes using these perovskites are demonstrated here.

Abstract:In this paper, CH3NH3PbI3-xClx crystal was grown by solution cooling method with CH3NH3I and PbCl2 as raw materials. Lead compounds and CH3NH3PbI3-xClx crystal with size about 6mm x 4mm x 2mm were obtained. The chemical reactions with different CH3NH3I/PbCl2 ratios were analyzed. XPS shows the content of chlorine in CH3NH3PbI3-xClx is about 0.91%. PXRD, FT-IR, Raman and absorbance spectra were used to study the structure and optical properties of CH3NH3PbI3-xClx by comparing with CH3NH3PbI3 crystal. The CH3NH3PbI3-xClx crystal grown is of tetragonal structure with the lattice constants a = b = 8.8165 angstrom, c = 12.7920 angstrom and the bandgap value of 1.57 eV.
Distinctive Bulk- and Surface-Specific Photoluminescence and Photocarrier Dynamics in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Perovskite

Abstract:A precise understanding of the intrinsic photoluminescence (PL) and photocarrier dynamics of lead halide perovskites remains elusive, largely due to the heterogeneities at multiple length scales associated with the solution-processed sample preparation. We report the slow solvent-evaporation-assisted crystallization, yielding a high-quality CH3NH3PbI3 single crystal with crack-free flat pristine surfaces. The single crystal demonstrated photoluminescence as a function of wavelength with two components, which represent the bulk- and surface-specific emissions, respectively. By time-resolved photoluminescence analysis as a function of probed wavelengths, we revealed distinctive bulk- versus surface-specific photocarrier dynamics. The remarkably long and dominating photocarrier lifetime of ∼2.4 μs probed at the bulk-PL peak position, as opposed the counterpart associated with the surface-PL peak, strongly indicated a much delocalized physical scheme for photocarrier dynamics in the lattice interior, as opposed to the periphery. Abstract:The coupling between the organic CH3NH3+ cations and inorganic perovskite PbBr3– framework in a large single crystal of (CH3NH3)PbBr3 weighing 13 g was studied using neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. Two lattice incommensurate (ICM) phases were found; one at higher temperatures, marked ICMHT, appeared between 150 and 134 K. The second one, marked ICMLT, developed below 143 K and remained at 75 K. The transition from the ICMLT to ICMHT phase upon warming gave rise to extremely large lattice shrinking, followed by extremely large lattice expansion of the tetragonal basal plane of the PbBr3 lattice. There was a progressive decrease in the width of the diffuse peak at the Bragg position from the PbBr3– lattice upon warming, which can be described using a critical exponent to show complete ordering of the atoms into a (CH3NH3)PbBr3 lattice at 200 K. (CH3NH3)PbBr3 exhibits six definitive acousticlike phonon branches at 75 K. The six branches reconstruct into two at 200 K, with the frequencies of both the transverse and longitudinal modes greatly enhanced. The asymmetric structure of the CH3NH3 ions together with the indirect interactions between the CH3NH3 ions mediated through the Br ions are used to understand the observed behaviors.

Abstract:Lead based compounds are attracting functional material with novel photophysical properties, but restricted by their varied coordination and difficulties in structural control. Two new polymeric compounds of {[Pb8(μ4-O)2(μ3-OCH3)6Cl2][Pb4(μ3-OH)4](NO3)8} (1) and {[Pb4(μ3-O)(μ3-OCH3)3](NO3)3} (2) were solvothermally synthesized, charactering cubane [Pb4O4] and [Pb8O8] building units extended by high-coordinated NO3-. The two compounds provide a rare system to evaluate Pb(II) binding competition to various inorganic ligands of CH3O-, Cl-, O2- and NO3-, over a linear pyridine-carboxylate linker. The 1 generated at higher temperature of 130 °C exhibits near-sunlight white emission, stemming from extremely sophisticated chemical environments of twelve crystallographic independent Pb(II) ions. A decreased temperature of 100 °C leads to 2 with strong blue emission under high-energy excitation and coexisted weak yellow colour under low-energy, benefited to precise colour regulation by changing the intensity of dual excitation.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional supramolecule, [H3N(CH2)(3)NH3] center dot [Pb-2(SIP)(2)] center dot 6H(2)O was synthesized under the hydrothermal condition. Its structure was determined with single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and further characterized via XRD, IR, fluorescent spectrum and elemental analysis. The compound crystallizes in triclinic space group P1, with a = 0.79946 (16) nm, b = 0.9881 (2) nm, c = 1.0343 (2) nm, a = 81.25 (3)degrees, beta = 84.95 (3)degrees, gamma = 68.13 (3)degrees, V = 0.7489 (3) nm(3), Z = 1, R-1 = 0.0226, wR(2) = 0.0486, GOF = 1.099. Along the [001] direction, binuclear cluster units [Pb-2 (SIP)(2)](2-) link to each other via O1 and O4 forming two-dimensional anionic layers, then these layers are stacked down the c axis and was further linked by N-H center dot center dot center dot O and O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds to build the three-dimensional supramolecular structure. Fluorescent spectrum of compound I shows that there are two strong fluorescent emission peaks at A = 349 nm and 393 nm and a weak fluorescent emission peak at 384 nm (lambda(max, excitation) = 236 nm).

Abstract:The organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites are composed of organic molecules imbedded in an inorganic framework. The compounds with general formula CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbX$_{3}$ (MAPbX$_{2}$) display large photovoltaic efficiencies for halogens $X$=Cl, Br, and I in a wide variety of sample geometries and preparation methods. The organic cation and inorganic framework are bound by hydrogen bonds that tether the molecules to the halide anions, and this has been suggested to be important to the optoelectronic properties. We have studied the effects of this bonding using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy to measure the molecular dynamics in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbCl$_3$ (MAPbCl$_3$). Low-energy/high-resolution neutron backscattering reveals thermally-activated molecular dynamics with a characteristic temperature of $\sim$ 95\,K. At this same temperature, higher-energy neutron spectroscopy indicates the presence of an anomalous broadening in energy (reduced lifetime) associated with the molecular vibrations. By contrast, neutron powder diffraction shows that a spatially long-range structural phase transitions occurs at 178\,K (cubic $\rightarrow$ tetragonal) and 173\,K (tetragonal $\rightarrow$ orthorhombic). The large difference between these two temperature scales suggests that the molecular and inorganic lattice dynamics in MAPbCl$_3$ are actually decoupled. With the assumption that underlying physical mechanisms do not change with differing halogens in the organic-inorganic perovskites, we speculate that the energy scale most relevant to the photovoltaic properties of the lead-halogen perovskites is set by the lead-halide bond, not by the hydrogen bond.

Investigation on broadband emission of two-dimensional melamine lead iodide perovskite (2D-C3H8N6PbI4): An experimental and theoretical approach

Abstract:Novel two-dimensional melamine lead iodide perovskite (2D-C3H8N6PbI4) is synthesized to investigate its crystallinity, optical band gap and broadband emission properties and to make comparisons with 2D-C3H8N6PbCl4/2D-C3H8N6PbBr4 perovskites. Both experimental and density functional theory (DFT) interrogations on 2D-C3H8N6PbX4 (X = Cl, Br and I) are conducted. The crystal structure, morphology and percentile of Pb and halide elements are confirmed using scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), powder/single crystal X-ray diffraction (PXRD/SXRD), DFT and X-ray crystallography simulations. The optical band gaps of 2D-C3H8N6PbX4 perovskites are determined from the Tauc plot fitting of absorbance and DFT studies. Distinct broadband emission of 2D-C3H8N6PbX4 perovskites between 300 and 800 nm is observed, which can be fitted with multiple Gaussian distributions. The fittings of broad PL spectra from 2D-C3H8N6PbCl4/2D-C3H8N6PbBr4 perovskites confirm the involvement of both Dexter energy transfer from melamine cation and self-trapped excitons (STEs). However, the broadband emission of 2D-C3H8N6PbI4 is attributed only to the Dexter energy transfer from melamine cation and the absence of STEs is attributed to the larger lattice deformation of 2D-C3H8N6PbI4. Moreover, the involvement of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the energy transfer is clarified to attest that the broadband emission of 2D-C3H8N6PbI4 is distinct among its halide family.

Abstract:Four new lead(II) or bismuth(III) selenites and a tellurite, namely, Pb(3)(TeO(3))Cl(4), Pb(3)(SeO(3))(2)Br(2), Pb(2)Cd(3)(SeO(3))(4)I(2)(H(2)O), Pb(2)Ge(SeO(3))(4) and BiFe(SeO(3))(3), have been prepared and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. These compounds exhibit five different types of structures. The structure of Pb(3)(TeO(3))Cl(4) features a three-dimensional (3D) lead(II) chloride network with tellurite anions filling in the 1D tunnels of Pb(4) 4-member rings (MRs) along the c-axis. Pb(3)(SeO(3))(2)Br(2) contains a 3D network composed of lead(II) selenite layers interconnected by bromide anions. Pb(2)Cd(3)(SeO(3))(4)I(2)(H(2)O) is a 3D structure based on 2D cadmium(II) selenite layers which are further connected by 1D lead(II) iodide ladder chains with lattice water molecules located at the 1D tunnels of the structure. Pb(2)Ge(SeO(3))(4) features a 3D framework constructed by the alternate arrangement of lead(II) selenite layers and germanium(iv) selenite layers in the [100] direction. The structure of BiFe(SeO(3))(3) is built on the 3D anionic framework of ion(III) selenite with the bismuth(III) ions located at its Fe(6)Se(6) 12-MR tunnels. Pb(3)(TeO(3))Cl(4) (Pna2(1)) is polar and BiFe(SeO(3))(3) (P2(1)2(1)2(1)) is noncentrosymmetric. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements using 1064 nm radiation indicate that BiFe(SeO(3))(3) exhibits a weak SHG efficiency of about 0.2 × KH(2)PO(4) (KDP). Magnetic property measurements for BiFe(SeO(3))(3) show a dominant antiferromagnetic interaction with weak spin-canting at low temperatures. IR, UV-vis and thermogravimetric, as well as electronic structure calculations were also performed.

Abstract:In this work, we describe the preparation of a new zero-Dimensional (0D) lead bromide hybrid material, with the structural formula (C5H9N3)2PbBr6, of which crystallographic, thermal, optical, and electrical properties have been studied and analyzed. Single crystals of (C5H9N3)2PbBr6 material were grown using a slow evaporation solution method at room temperature. The molecular structure reveals that the crystal packing is made of isolated [PbBr6]4− units into which organic (C5H9N3)2+ cations are embedded and linked by a combination of N/C-H … Br hydrogen bonds and stacking interactions forming a three-dimensional network. The Hirshfeld surface analysis and fingerprint plots facilitates a quantification of non-covalent intermolecular interactions, which are crucial in building the supramolecular architectures. Upon photoexcitation, the crystals exhibit an efficient green emission band covering a large spectral region from 400 to 700 nm peaking at 592 nm. The optical band gap was calculated to be Eg = 3.45 eV. The electrical conductivity of this material shows that the most suitable equivalent circuit is represented by a single parallel cell formed by (Rg∥CPEg), the value of the activation energy is 1.18 eV. Thermal analysis reveals that the decomposition of the sample starts from 275 K. Density functional theory (DFT) was performed to determine the electronic structure of the tilted compound. The DFT calculation shows that the title compound is direct semiconductor with a band gap energy of about 2.97 eV.

Abstract:The emerged 3D APb2X6 (A represents diammonium; X is Cl, Br and I) perovskitoids hold huge potential to inherit the desirable charge transport properties and functional tunability of 3D APbX3 perovskites. Limited by the Goldschmidt tolerance factor rule, the reported 3D perovskitoid species remain sparse, hindering us from exploring their structural effects dictated photoelectronic behavior. Herein, we construct a novel 3D (NMDAP)Pb2Br6 (NMDAP = N-methyl propane diammonium) composed of Pb2Br10 dimer unit, modulated by methylated diammonium spacer and synthetically controlled stoichiometric ratio of reactants. Emphatically, 3D (NMDAP)Pb2Br6 shows remarkable self-trapped excitons (STEs) emission induced by high octahedra distortion associated with strong electron-phonon coupling. The STEs emission features broadband photoluminescence (PL) spectra ranging from 525 to 750 nm with large Stokes redshift of ~ 0.91 eV. Photophysical investigation further reveals a large Huang–Rhys factor of ~ 146 and a long STEs emission lifetime of 17 ns. DFT calculations suggest that the band edge states have main contribution from the Pb 6s/Br 4p orbitals along the equatorial direction rather than the axial direction in 3D (NMDAP)Pb2Br6. Moreover, the asymmetric structure enables 3D (NMDAP)Pb2Br6 anisotropic charge transport behavior, as underpinned by the experimental and theoretical investigations. As a consequence, photoconductive detector based on 3D (NMDAP)Pb2Br6 single crystal delivers anisotropic photoconductivity performance, with the [001] direction showing responsivity and detectivity of 0.28 A W-1 and 2.12×1012 Jones, 3-fold promotion compared to those of the [100] and [010] directions. These observations offer extended functional tunability in 3D perovskitoids, and reveal the potential of 3D perovskitoids in advanced optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The title cluster compound [WS4Cu3Br(bipy)(2)] has been synthesized by the reaction of (NH4)(2)[WS4], CuBr and 2, 2'-bipy in DMF solution. Single crystal X-ray diffraction data show that the compound has a nest-shaped structure. Nonlinear optical properties (NLO) of the cluster were investigated by a Z-scan technique with a pulsed laser at 532nm. The cluster exhibits the strong NLO absorption and a self-defocusing effect (effective non-linear absorption coefficient, alpha(2)(eff) = 7.3 x 10(-11)mW(-1); effective non-linear refractive index, n(2)(eff) = 3.9 x 10(-11) esu) when measured in a 6.0 x 10(-4)mol (.) dm(-3) DMF solution.

Abstract:The organic–inorganic hybrid compound ((C6H4)2N(CH2)6NH3)2PbCl4 (N6AHMC–PbCl4) and ((C6H4)2N(CH2)6NH3)2PbCl2I2 (N6AHMC–PbCl2I2) were synthesized by treating N-6-aminohexamethylcarbazole chloride (N6AHMC–HCl) with stoichiometric amount of PbX2 (X=Cl, I) at room temperature using dimethylformamide (DMF) as solution. High order diffraction peaks corresponding to (00l) (l=2, 4, 6, …) were observed in the X-ray diffraction profile of N6AHMC–PbCl4 and N6AHMC–PbCl2I2, indicating the formation of hybrid crystal with layered perovskite structure. N6AHMC–PbCl4 presented characteristic absorptions of PbCl-based layered perovskite centered at about 329nm. Similar to the PL spectrum of N6AHMC–HCl, the film of N6AHMC–PbCl4 showed three strong emission peaks, indicating that the exciton emission of the N6AHMC–PbCl4 film comes from the organic layer of the hybrids. Owing to the partially replacement of Cl− with I−, the fluorescence quenched N6AHMC–PbCl2I2 showed broad absorption at about 400nm, which is assigned to the transition from the hybrid orbital hybridized by Cl 3p and I 5p valence states to Pb 6p conduction bands. For the reason of the variation of the energy band structure, from type I quantum well structure to type II heterojunction, the photoconductivity of N6AHMC–PbCl2I2 is higher than that of N6AHMC–PbCl4.
Exploring a Stable and Dense 3D Lead Chloride Hybrid with Emission of Self‐Trapped Excitons toward X‐Ray Scintillation

Abstract:A stable and dense 3D lead chloride hybrid, (1‐methylpiperazine)Pb4Cl10·H2O, built from the corner‐, edge‐, and face‐shared lead chloride polyhedra is developed, featuring unusual self‐trapped excitons emission and effective X‐ray scintillation, which sheds light on the future exploration of new 3D organic–inorganic metal halide hybrids and their optoelectronic properties tunability. The exceptional photophysical properties of 3D organic–inorganic lead halide hybrids (OILHs) endow their significant potential for usage in optoelectronics, which has sparked intense research on novel 3D OILHs and associated applications. However, constructing new 3D OILHs based on large organic cations suffers from tough challenges due to the limitation of the Goldschmidt tolerance factor rule, let alone further explorations of their practical applications. Herein, a brand‐new 3D lead chloride hybrid, (1MPZ)Pb4Cl10·H2O (1, 1MPZ = 1‐methylpiperazine) is reported, featuring a dense 3D lead chloride framework made of the corner‐, edge‐, and face‐shared lead chloride polyhedra. 1 presents a broadband white light emission with a large Stokes shift and a nanosecond photoluminescence lifetime, which originates from radiative recombination of self‐trapped excitons (STEs) induced by the highly distorted structure. Such a reabsorption‐free and fast‐decayed STEs emission coupling with the dense 3D architecture further enables 1 with effective X‐ray scintillation with good sensitivity. Impressively, 1 also shows superior environmental and radiation stability. This work provides a new 3D OILH with appealing luminescence, not only expanding the 3D OILH family but also inspiring the exploitation of their optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:The nanorods of a new Pb(II)-chloride metal-organic coordination polymer, [Pb(2)Cl(2)Q(2)]n (1)(HQ= 8-hydroxyquinoline) was synthesized using the sonochemical synthesis. The characteristics of the compound were determined via the elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), IR spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). The X-ray structure indicated that the compound included a 2-dimensional polymer in the solid-state with two different centers of Pb(II). Two coordination numbers (6 and 7) with two coordination spheres (symmetrical and unsymmetrical) were observed for the lead (II) centers. The structure showed a self-assembly capability with several weak interactions, such as H-bonds and pi-pi interactions. Sonochemical results showed the uniform, rod-like morphology of the title compound. The computational DFT results demonstrated that the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) was confined primarily between one Cl- anion and Pb centers, whereas the LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) was roughly delocalized on the Q(-) ligand N and O atoms comprising the other Cl- anions. The estimated gap of HOMO-LUMO was 3.708 eV and the composite was highly shock-sensitive. The alpha-PbO nanostructures were produced by thermolysis of 1 at 180 degrees C via oleic acid as a surfactant. (c) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic halide perovskites, especially methylammonium lead halide, have recently led to a remarkable breakthrough in photovoltaic devices. However, due to the environmental and stability concerns of the heavy metal, lead, in these perovskite based solar cells, research in the non-lead perovskite structures have been attracting increasing attention. In this study, a layered perovskite-like architecture, (NH4)3Bi2I9, was prepared in solution and the structure was solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The results from DFT calculations showed the significant lone pair effect of the bismuth ion and the band gap was measured as around 2.04 eV, which is lower than the band gap of CH3NH3PbBr3. Conductivity measurement was also performed to examine the potential in the applications as an alternative to the lead containing perovskites.
