Abstract:AbstractArtificial counterparts of conical‐shaped transmembrane protein channels are of interest in biomedical sciences for biomolecule detection and selective ion permeation based on ionic size and/or charge differences. However, industrial‐scale applications such as seawater desalination, separation of mono‐ from divalent cations, and treatment of highly‐saline industrial waste effluents are still big challenges for such biomimetic channels. A simple monomer seeding experimental approach is used to grow ionically conductive biomimetic charged nanocone pores at the surface of an acid‐functionalized membrane. These readily scalable nanocone membranes enable ultra‐fast cation permeation (Na+=8.4× vs. Mg2+=1.4×) and high ion charge selectivity (Na+/Mg2+=6×) compared to the commercial state‐of‐the‐art permselective membrane (CSO, Selemion, Japan) owing to negligible surface resistance and positively charged conical pore walls.

Abstract:Conical-shaped transmembrane protein channels are essential for the transport of ions across lipid bilayers in biological tissues and organisms. Their artificial counterparts are of high applicative interest in biomedical sciences for biomolecule detection and selective ion permeation based on ionic-size and/or charge differences. However, industrial-scale applications such as seawater desalination, separation of mono- from divalent cations, and treatment of highly-saline industrial waste effluents are still big challenges for such biomimetic channels. Here, we report a simple and radically novel "monomer seeding", an experimental approach to grow ionically conductive biomimetic charged nanocone pores at the surface of an acid-functionalized membrane. These readily scalable nanocone membranes enable ultra-fast cation permeation (Na+ = 8.4× vs. Mg2+ = 1.4×) and high ion charge selectivity (Na+/Mg2+ = 6×) compared with the commercial state-of-the-art permselective membrane (CSO, SelemionTM, Japan) due to negligible surface resistances and positively charged conical pore walls, respectively.

Abstract:Nature's various hierarchical structures exhibit exceptional performance in enhancing mass transport. However, how to bionic nano-hierarchical structures to enhance ion dynamics and achieve charge regulation is a significant challenge. Herein, a nano-hierarchical porous hybrid membrane inspired by nature was designed by integrating 1D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on the 2D MXene substrate utilizing MOF nanoparticles with tailorable positive and negative surface charges. The synergistic effects of the bioinspired nanohierarchical porous structure and surface charge interactions significantly enhance the performance and stability of the nanoconfined membrane, as corroborated by experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations. As a result, the optimized nanohierarchical porous membrane exhibits high a cation selectivity of 0.95, an outstanding power density of 35.04 W m-2, and excellent stability over one month. Synergizing enhanced mass transport and ion dynamics in nano-hierarchically structured materials with tailored charge improves osmotic power generation efficiency and benefits logic circuits with controlled charge transport.

Abstract:Design elements extracted from biological ion channels guide the engineering of artificial nanofluidic membranes for efficient ionic transport and spawn biomimetic devices with great potential in many cutting-edge areas. In this context, polymeric nanofluidic membranes can be especially attractive because of their inherent flexibility and benign processability, which facilitate massive fabrication and facile device integration for large-scale applications. Herein, the state-of-the-art achievements of polymeric nanofluidic membranes are systematically summarized. Theoretical fundamentals underlying both biological and synthetic ion channels are introduced. The advances of engineering polymeric nanofluidic membranes are then detailed from aspects of structural design, material construction, and chemical functionalization, emphasizing their broad chemical and reticular/topological variety as well as considerable property tunability. After that, this Review expands on examples of evolving these polymeric membranes into macroscopic devices and their potentials in addressing compelling issues in energy conversion and storage systems where efficient ion transport is highly desirable. Finally, a brief outlook on possible future developments in this field is provided.
Nacre-like Mechanically Robust Heterojunction for Lithium-Ion Extraction

Abstract:Nanolaminate membranes composed of two-dimensional materials are promising candidates for molecular sieving via size-limited diffusion and charge effect in nanoconfinement, but these materials suffer from weak mechanical properties and instability in water due to the hydrophilicity. Here, inspired by natural nacre structure, we design an ion-gating heterojunction with opposite charges and asymmetrical nanochannels. Nanofibers and nanosheets form a typical brick-and-mortar structure, which exhibits mechanical robustness compared with other reported materials. Additionally, the heterostructure contributes to both restraining concentration polarization and generating spontaneous potential gradient. Thus, based on the confined dehydration and charge-exclusion effects, we reveal the ordered transport rank Li+ > Na+ > K+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+, which depends on the valence and radius of ions. Ionic gating achieves the extraction of lithium ions with the Li+/Na+ and Li+/K+ selectivity of 2.52 and 4.78. This membrane may have applications in lithium-ion batteries and designs of ion-separation membranes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials-based membranes with artificial transfer channels have shown significant potential for selective separation. However, the challenges such as uncontrollable interlayer spacing and undesirable molecular sieving capabilities of 2D channels have impeded their further application in separation. Inspired by biological selectivity transport channels with proper steric and affinity sites, herein we have designed biomimetic 2D selective transport channels based on a ZIF-L nanosheet membrane. In this design, the UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles tune the appropriate interlayer confinement and compensate for laminate framework defects of 2D selectivity transport channels, the artificial imprinting recognition sites establishes the essential chemical environment for specific separation. As a result, the obtained MOFs nanosheet based membranes with imprinted recognition sites (MN-IMs) exhibited enhanced permeation flux (J=1.0847×10-3 and 1.0423×10-3 mg min-1 cm-2) and permselectivity (α=3.77 and 4.10), outperforming state-of-the-art similar technologies. Besides, the composite MOFs demonstrated good photoinduced self-recovery ability, which also enables MN-IMs to have long-lasting selective separation performance (the separation efficiency is 90.76%) in the continuous separation process. This study introduces a novel design strategy for developing sophisticated 2D materials-based membranes and offers new insights into the precise separation of specific molecules.

Abstract:Artificial membranes precisely imitating the biological functions of ion channels and ion pumps have attracted significant attention to explore nanofluidic energy conversion. Herein, inspired by the cyclic ion transport for the photosynthesis in purple bacteria, a bilayer inorganic membrane (TiO2/AAO) composed of oxide semiconductor (TiO2) mesopores on anodic alumina (AAO) macropores is we developed. This inorganic membrane achieves the functions of ion channels and ion pumps, including the ion rectification and light-powered ion pumping. The asymmetric charge distribution across the bilayer membrane contributes to the cationic selectivity and ion rectification characteristics. The electrons induced by ultraviolet irradiation introduce a built-in electric field across TiO2/AAO membrane, which pumps the active ion transport from a low to a high concentration. This work integrates the functions of biological ion channels and ion pumps within an artificial membrane for the first time, which paves the way to explore multifunctional membranes analogous to its biological counterpart.

Abstract:Biological ion channels are renowned for their exceptional ion transport selectivity and adaptability to environmental changes, posing a significant challenge for synthetic mimicry. Herein, an innovative covalent–organic‐framework membrane featuring aligned benzothiadiazole units within its oriented 1D nanochannels is reported. These densely arrayed dipolar benzothiadiazole units enhance selective ion adsorption and facilitate membrane charge regulation. Consequently, the membrane can dynamically adjust its permselectivity toward ions, transitioning seamlessly between cation‐selective, ambipolar, and anion‐selective states. This versatility affects both the type of ions transported and the transport efficiency, supporting reversible and controlled membrane operation, as illustrated by the capacity to regulate the magnitude and direction of osmotic power. When interacting with multivalent anions, highly negatively charged channels of the membrane exhibit outstanding cation permselectivity and conductivity. Specifically, upon exposure to PO43− ions, the membrane achieves a remarkable osmotic power of 155 W m−2 and an energy conversion efficiency of 46.1% under salinity gradients of 0.5 and 0.01 m NaCl. Notably, introducing multivalent cations can reverse the polarity of the membrane. This work underscores the potential of exploiting ion‐dipolar interactions for the development of adaptive, ion‐selective membranes with promising applications in electrochemical sensing, energy conversion, and more.
Free-Standing Bilayered Nanoparticle Superlattice Nanosheets with Asymmetric Ionic Transport Behaviors

Abstract:Natural cell membranes can directionally and selectively regulate the ion transport, which is critical for the functioning of living cells. Here, we report on the fabrication of an artificial membrane based on an asymmetric nanoparticle superlattice bilayered nanosheet, which exhibits similar ion transport characteristics. The superlattice nanosheets were fabricated via a drying-mediated self-assembly of polystyrene-capped gold nanoparticles at the liquid air interface. By adopting a layer-by-layer assembly process, an asymmetric nanomembrane could be obtained consisting of two nanosheets with different nanoparticle size. The resulting nanomembranes exhibit an asymmetric ion transport behavior, and diode-like current voltage curves were observed. The asymmetric ion transport is attributed to the cone-like nanochannels formed within the membranes, upon which a simulation map was established to illustrate the relationship between the channel structure and the ionic selectivity, in consistency with our experimental results. Our superlattice nanosheet-based design presents a promising strategy for the fabrication of next-generation smart nanomembranes for rationally and selectively regulating the ion transport even at a large ion flux, with potential applications in a wide range of fields, including biosensor devices, energy conversion, biophotonics, and bioelectronics.

Abstract:By imitating the exceptional compositions, structures, formations and functions of biological or natural materials, a myriad of biomimetic and bioinspired membranes have been designed and prepared using cell membrane, lotus, mussel as representative prototypes and biomineralization, bioadhesion, self-assembly as major tools. These membranes have displayed fascinating properties and outstanding performances such as multiple interactions, hierarchical organizations, multiple selective transport mechanisms, superior stability/resistance and distinct adaptability. Meanwhile, these membranes have made tremendous contributions in coping with energy and water stress, environment threats. Biomimetics focuses on the basic science by fundamentally exploring the principles of biological systems, while bioinspiration focuses on the applied engineering by technologically implementing the principles from biological systems. Biomimetics and bioinspiration, as the complementary and interchangeable strategies for sustainable innovation and development of membrane technology, have great implications in exploring membrane materials and intensifying membrane processes. Abstract:Nature provides a huge range of biological materials, just as ion channels, with various smart functions over millions of years of evolution, and which serve as a big source of bio-inspiration for biomimetic materials. In this critical review, a strategy for the design and synthesis of biomimetic smart nanopores and nanochannels is presented and put into context with recent progress in this rapidly growing field from biological, inorganic, organic to composite nanopore and nanochannel materials, which can respond to single/multiple external stimuli, e.g., pH, temperature, light, and so on. This review is intended to utilize a specific responsive behavior for regulating ionic transport properties inside the single nanopore or nanochannel as an example to demonstrate the feasibility of the design strategy, and provide an overview of this fascinating research field (109 references).
Super-assembly of Freestanding Graphene Oxide-Aramid Fiber Membrane with T-mode Subnanochannels for Sensitive Ion Transport

Abstract:Biomimetic nacre-like membranes composed of two-dimensional lamellar sheets and one-dimensional nanofibers exhibit high mechanical strength and excellent stability. Thus, they show substantial application in the field of membrane science and water purification. However, the limited techniques for the assembly of two-dimensional lamellar membranes and one-dimensional nanofibers hamper their development and application. Herein, we developed a nacre-like and freestanding graphene oxide/aramid fiber membrane with abundant T-mode subnanochannels by introducing aramid fibers into graphene oxide interlamination via the super-assembly interaction between graphene oxide and aramid fibers. Benefiting from the presence of stable and adjustable sub-nanometer-size ion transport channels, the graphene oxide/aramid fiber composite membrane exhibited excellent mono/divalent ion selectivity of 3.51 (K+/Mg2+), which is superior to that of the pure graphene oxide membrane. The experimental results suggest that the mono/divalent ion selectivity is ascribed to the subnanochannels in the graphene oxide/aramid fiber composite membrane, electrostatic repulsion interaction and strong interaction between the divalent metal ion and carboxyl groups. Moreover, the composite membrane exhibited remarkable charge selectivity with a K+/Cl- ratio of up to ∼158, indicating that this graphene oxide/aramid fiber composite membrane has great potential for application in energy conversion. This study provides an avenue to prepare freestanding and nacre-like composite membranes with abundant T-mode ion transport channels for ion recognition and energy conversion, which also shows great application prospects in the field of membrane science and water purification.

Abstract:A cell membrane is a flexible lipid bilayer with sophisticated functions which dominate the exchange of material, energy and information between the outside and the inside of the cell. In order to understand and imitate these structures and functions, scientists had already developed a variety of mimic membranes which are alike in form based on lipid bilayer and organic channel-molecules. With the rise of nanotechnology, a large number of synthetic nano-devices are widely used to construct porous biomimetic membranes which are alike in spirit instead of the conventional lipid bilayer membranes. This perspective will first introduce several typical methods to fabricate porous biomimetic membranes, and then discuss the "smart" properties and future applications of these membranes in materials transport, energy transformation and signal transduction aspects.

Abstract:Synthetic membranes featuring confined nanostructures have emerged as a prominent category of leading materials that can selectively separate target ions from complex water matrices. Further advancements in these membranes will pressingly rely on the ability to elucidate the inherent connection between transmembrane ion permeation behaviors and the ion-selective nanostructures. In this review, we first abstract state-of-the-art nanostructures with a diversity of spatial confinements in current synthetic membranes. Next, the underlying mechanisms that govern ion permeation under the spatial nanoconfinement are analyzed. We then proceed to assess ion-selective membrane materials with a focus on their structural merits that allow ultrahigh selectivity for a wide range of monovalent and divalent ions. We also highlight recent advancements in experimental methodologies for measuring ionic permeability, hydration numbers, and energy barriers to transport. We conclude by putting forth the future research prospects and challenges in the realm of high-performance ion-selective membranes.

Abstract:Cell membranes control mass, energy, and information flow to and from the cell. In the cell membrane a lipid bilayer serves as the barrier layer, with highly efficient molecular machines, membrane proteins, serving as the transport elements. In this way, highly specialized transport properties are achieved by these composite materials by segregating the matrix function from the transport function using different components. For example, cell membranes containing aquaporin proteins can transport ∼4 billion water molecules per second per aquaporin while rejecting all other molecules including salts, a feat unmatched by any synthetic system, while the impermeable lipid bilayer provides the barrier and matrix properties. True separation of functions between the matrix and the transport elements has been difficult to achieve in conventional solute separation synthetic membranes. In this study, we created membranes with distinct matrix and transport elements through designed coassembly of solvent-stable artificial (peptide-appended pillar[5]arene, PAP5) or natural (gramicidin A) model channels with block copolymers into lamellar multilayered membranes. Self-assembly of a lamellar structure from cross-linkable triblock copolymers was used as a scalable replacement for lipid bilayers, offering better stability and mechanical properties. By coassembly of channel molecules with block copolymers, we were able to synthesize nanofiltration membranes with sharp selectivity profiles as well as uncharged ion exchange membranes exhibiting ion selectivity. The developed method can be used for incorporation of different artificial and biological ion and water channels into synthetic polymer membranes. The strategy reported here could promote the construction of a range of channel-based membranes and sensors with desired properties, such as ion separations, stimuli responsiveness, and high sensitivity.
A Bioinspired Free-Standing 2D Crown-Ether-Based Polyimine Membrane for Selective Proton Transport

Abstract:Biological proton channels play important roles in the delicate metabolism process, and have led to great interest in mimicking selective proton transport. Herein, we designed a bioinspired proton transport membrane by incorporating flexible 14-crown-4 (14C4) units into rigid frameworks of polyimine films by an interfacial Schiff base reaction. The Young's modulus of the membrane reaches about 8.2 GPa. The 14C4 units could grab water, thereby forming hydrogen bond-water networks and acting as jumping sites to lower the energy barrier of proton transport. The molecular chains present a vertical orientation to the membrane, and the ions travel between the quasi-planar molecular sheets. Furthermore, the 14C4 moieties could bond alkali ions through host-guest interactions. Thus, the ion conductance follows H+ ≫K+ >Na+ >Li+ , and an ultrahigh selectivity of H+ /Li+ (ca. 215) is obtained. This study provides an effective avenue for developing ion-selective membranes by embedding macrocycle motifs with inherent cavities.

Abstract:Biological membrane channels and pore-forming proteins display a level of sophistication in managing molecular scale transport that is typically unmatched by inorganic analogs, and efforts to develop nanopores that approach the transport efficiency of biological molecules often run into fabrication or synthetic difficulties. A different approach is exploiting nanomaterial scaffolds that provide near-atomic level of control over the structure and surface properties of these structures. Carbon nanotubes provide an especially interesting system for such studies due to their inherently smooth hydrophobic pore walls that support extremely high transport rates, which are comparable to biological channels. We describe the preparation of nanotube-based membrane nanopores, their assembly into biological membranes, and single-channel measurements of molecular transport in these assemblies.
Biomimetic Research Based on the Study of Nacre Structure

Abstract:It is very important for the development of material science to combine material science with life science. The investigations of crystal structure of nacre from bivalve shell were done and it is proposed that there is a domain structure of crystal orientation in the nacre. From the crack morphologies, it is found that the crack deflection, fibre pull out and organic matrix bridging are the three main toughening mechanisms acting on nacre. The organic matrix plays an important role in the toughening of this biological composite. According to the structure mechanism artificial micro assembly metal/titanium carbide (TiC) multilayered thin films were synthesized and it was found that most of the multiplayer hardness was greater than the rule of mixture values. The biomimetic mechanism of inorganic materials is discussed under mediation of variable organic templates and coating of phosphates on titanium surface by self assembling method was studied. Immiscible Liquid-Mediated Ultrafast Ion Transport through Nanoconfined Channels

Abstract:The selectivity filter of biological ion channels could well split ion's hydration shell at the entryway of channels with subtle opening sizes, leading to the 'naked' ion's rapid transport across the channels. Numerous artificial nanochannels have been developed for mimicking this. However, the precise fabrication of nanochannels/nanopores with targeted diameters has been always a challenge. Herein, we employ the immiscible liquid-infused channels to regulate the ion's hydration shell and mimic the ion transport processes. Experimental and theoretical results show the partial removal of water molecules around ions at the entrance of the nanochannels and low-resistance migration of ions in the immiscible liquid phase. Compared with the pristine membrane, the cross-membrane conductance and osmotic energy power density of the proposed membrane have increased by ~4-fold and ~77.3%, respectively. Moreover, this approach avoids the far-reached technique and could be easily adapted to various membrane materials. Therefore, this strategy holds great potential in systems requiring ion transport across membranes, including ion separation, battery, and desalination, etc.
