Abstract:<p>We study decay and smoothness properties for eigenfunctions of compact localization operators <span class="math"><math>Aaφ1,φ2</math></span>. Operators <span class="math"><math>Aaφ1,φ2</math></span> with symbols <em>a</em> in the wide modulation space <span class="math"><math>Mp,∞</math></span> (containing the Lebesgue space <span class="math"><math>Lp</math></span>), <span class="math"><math>p&lt;∞</math></span>, and windows <span class="math"><math>φ1,φ2</math></span> in the Schwartz class <span class="math"><math>S</math></span> are known to be compact. We show that their <span class="math"><math>L2</math></span>-eigenfuctions with non-zero eigenvalues are indeed highly compressed onto a few Gabor atoms. Similarly, for symbols <em>a</em> in the weighted modulation spaces <span class="math"><math>Mvs⊗1∞(R2d)</math></span>, <span class="math"><math>s&gt;0</math></span> (subspaces of <span class="math"><math>Mp,∞(R2d)</math></span>, <span class="math"><math>p&gt;2d/s</math></span>) the <span class="math"><math>L2</math></span>-eigenfunctions of <span class="math"><math>Aaφ1,φ2</math></span> are actually Schwartz functions.</p><p>An important role is played by quasi-Banach Wiener amalgam and modulation spaces. As a tool, new convolution relations for modulation spaces and multiplication relations for Wiener amalgam spaces in the quasi-Banach setting are exhibited.</p>
